  • Visual Studio: Add Item / Add as link rather than just Add

    I'm new to visual studio, coming from Delphi. I have a directory tree full of .cs files (root is \Common). I also have a directory tree full of Applications (root is \Applications) Finally, I've got a tree full of Assemblies (root is \Assemblies) I'd like to keep my .cs files in the Common tree and all the environment voodoo (solutions, projects, settings, metadata, debug data, bin, etc.) in the Assmblies tree. So, for a simple example, I've got an assembly called PdMagic.Common.Math.dll. The Solution and project is located in \Assemblies\Common\Math. All of its source (.cs) files are in \Common\Math. (matrix.cs, trig.cs, mathtypes.cs, mathfuncs.cs, stats.cs, etc.) When I use Add Existing Item to add matrix.cs to my project, a copy of it is added to the \Assemblies\Common\Math folder. I just want to reference it. I don't want multiple copies laying around. I've tried Add Existing Item, and used the drop down to "Add link" rather than just "Add", and that seems to do what I want. Question: What is the "best practice" for this sort of thing? Do most people just put those .cs files all in the same folder as the project? Why isn't "Add link" the default? Thanks!

  • View all ntext column text in SQL Server Management Studio for SQL CE database

    I often want to do a "quick check" of the value of a large text column in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). The maximum number of characters that SSMS will let you view, in grid results mode, is 65535. (It is even less in text results mode.) Sometimes I need to see something beyond that range. Using SQL Server 2005 databases, I often used the trick of converting it to XML, because SSMS lets you view much larger amounts of text that way: SELECT CONVERT(xml, MyCol) FROM MyTable WHERE ... But now I am using SQL CE, and there is no Xml data type. There is still a "Maximum Characters Retreived XML" value under Options; I suppose this is useful when connecting to other data sources. I know I can just get the full value by running a little console app or something, but is there a way within SSMS to see the entire ntext column value? [Edit] OK, this didn't get much attention the first time around (18 views?!). It's not a huge concern, but maybe I'm just obsessed with it. There has to be some good way around this, doesn't there? So a modest bounty is active. What I am willing to accept as answers, in order from best-to-worst: A solution that works just as easy as the XML trick in SQL CE. That is, a single function (convert, cast, etc.) that does the job. A not-too-invasive way to hack SSMS to get it to display more text in the results. An equivalent SQL query (perhaps something that creatively uses SUBSTRING and generates multiple ad-hoc columns??) to see the results. The solution should work with nvarchar and ntext columns of any length in SQL CE from SSMS. Any ideas?

  • How to control the download url for dotNetFx35setup.exe without using the Visual Studio bootstrapper

    Previously I've used to Visual Studio 2008 setup.bin to generate a bootstrapper. I had some issues with it which were difficult to resolve and turned to dotNetInstaller. One great thing with the VS 2008 generated bootstrapper, was that I was able to control the download location for the .NET framework. By using the MSBuild task I could specify the componentsLocation: <GenerateBootstrapper ApplicationFile="$(TargetFileName)" ApplicationName="MyApp" ApplicationUrl="http://$(InstallerHost)$(DownloadUrl)" BootstrapperItems="@(BootstrapperFile)" CopyComponents="True" ComponentsLocation="Relative" OutputPath="$(OutputPath)" Path="C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bootstrapper\" /> Here I'm able to use the ComponentsLocation="Relative" and the bootstrapper would download from our own web server - which is what I want. When I no longer have the VS 2008 bootstrapper, I would like to have the same feature. The new boostrapper downloads the dotNetFx35setup.exe from a defined server, but the problem is that this ".NET bootstrapper" connects to Microsoft's servers for downloading the needed packages. Trying to run the following command: dotNetFx35setup.exe /? did not show any options to control the download location. The web server will contain the package structure which the Windows SDK (v6.0A) has within the Bootstrapper\Packages directory. The structure looks like this: Packages DotNetFX DotNetFX30 DotNetFX35 DotNetFx35Client DotNetFx35SP1 ..... When I state a dependency to the .NET Framework 3.5, the DotNetFX35 directory structure gets copied into the bin/Debug directory. I've copied this directory onto the web server and it looks like this: DotNetFX35 dotNetFX20 dotNetFX30 dotNetFX35 x64 netfx35_x64.exe x86 netfx35_x86.exe dotNetMSP dotNetFx35setup.exe The other directories contains mainly MSI, MSP and MSU files. So any pointers on how to control downloading of the .NET framework. Shouldn't I use the dotNetFx35setup.exe file? If not - which should I use?

    Working on a an ASP.NET MVC Project, and I'm having some difficulties deploying to a shared dev server. Locally, when debugging using the local Visual Studio 2008 server, everything works peachy. When there is none then the status of the label will change to "No USB drives found.Please insert a USB drive". 2) When one or more USB drive is added the volume name with the drive letter for example "James(F:)" is added to the Combobox list. The combobox list also needs to remove the entry for the USB drive added in the list automatically when it is removed . So when there is no USB the list should be empty and the label will again prompt user to insert a USB stick or drive.

  • Problem: Vectorizing Code with Intel Visual FORTRAN for X64

    I'm compiling my fortran90 code using Intel Visual FORTRAN on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise X64 Edition. When I compile the code for 32 bit structure and using automatic and manual vectorizing options. The code will be compiled, vectorized. And when I run it on 8 core system the compiled code uses 70% of CPU that shows me that vectorizing is working. But when I compile the code with 64 Bit compiler, it says that the code is vectorized but when I run it it only shows CPU usage of about 12% that is full usage for one core out of 8, so it means that while the compiler says that code is vectorized, vectorization is not working. And it's strange for me because it's on a X64 Edition Windows and I was expecting to see the reverse result. I thought that it should be better to run a code that is compiled for 64 Bit architecture on a 64 bit windows. Anyone have any idea why the compiled code is not able to use the full power of multiple cores for 64 Bit Compiled version? Thanks in advance for your responses.

    Problem: I'm trying to use a library named DCMTK which used some other external libraries ( zlib, libtiff, libpng, libxml2, libiconv ). I've downloaded these external libraries (*.LIB & *.h files ) from the same website. Now, when I compile the DCMTK library I'm getting link errors (793 errors) like this: Error 2 error LNK2005: __encode_pointer already defined in MSVCRTD.lib(MSVCR90D.dll) LIBCMTD.lib dcmmkdir Error 3 error LNK2005: __decode_pointer already defined in MSVCRTD.lib(MSVCR90D.dll) LIBCMTD.lib dcmmkdir Error 4 error LNK2005: __CrtSetCheckCount already defined in MSVCRTD.lib(MSVCR90D.dll) LIBCMTD.lib dcmmkdir Error 5 error LNK2005: __invoke_watson already defined in MSVCRTD.lib(MSVCR90D.dll) LIBCMTD.lib dcmmkdir Error 6 error LNK2005: __errno already defined in MSVCRTD.lib(MSVCR90D.dll) LIBCMTD.lib dcmmkdir Error 7 error LNK2005: __configthreadlocale already defined in MSVCRTD.lib(MSVCR90D.dll) LIBCMTD.lib dcmmkdir Error 8 error LNK2005: _exit already defined in MSVCRTD.lib(MSVCR90D.dll) LIBCMTD.lib dcmmkdir Documentation: This seems to be a popular error for this library so, they do have a FAQ entry addressing this issue which ( http://forum.dcmtk.org/viewtopic.php?t=35 ) says: The problem is that the linker tries to combine different, incompatible versions of the Visual C++ runtime library into a single binary. This happens when not all parts of your project and the libraries you link against are generated with the same code generation options in Visual C++. Do not use the /NODEFAULTLIB workaround, because strange software crashes may follow. Fix the problem! DCMTK is by default compiled with the "Multithreaded" or "Multithreaded Debug" code generation option (the latter for Debug mode). Either change the project settings of all of your code to use these code generation options, or change the code generation for all DCMTK modules and re-compile. MFC users beware: DCMTK should be compiled with "Multithreaded DLL" or "Multithreaded DLL Debug" settings if you want to link the libraries into an MFC application. Just now I knew there are other things also which can cause same effect. Whats up with the "Debug Mode" (Multi-Threaded Debug) and "Release Mode" (Multi-Threaded)? What exactly is happening under the hood? Why exactly this thing is causing linking error? I wonder if there is something called "Single-Threaded Debug" and "Single-Threaded" which again causes the same thing. Documentation talks something about "Code Generation Options". What Code Generation Options? WTH are they? Documentation specifically warns us not to use /NODEFAULTLIB workaround. (example /NODEFAULTLIB :msvcrt ). Why? How would I cause troubles? what exactly is it? Please explain the last point in the documentation for MFC users. Because I'm going to use MFC later in this project. Explain Why should we do it?   • Windsor IHandlerSelector in RIA Services Visual Studio 2010 Beta2

    Hi everybody! I want to implement multi tenancy using Windsor and i don't know how to handle this situation: i succesfully used this technique in plain ASP.NET MVC projects and thought incorporating in a RIA Services project would be similar. So i used IHandlerSelector, registered some components and wrote an ASP.NET MVC view to verify it works in a plain ASP.NET MVC environment. And it did! Next step was to create a DomainService which got an IRepository injected in the constructor. This service is hosted in the ASP.NET MVC application. And it actually ... works:i can get data out of it to a Silverlight application. Sample snippet: public OrganizationDomainService(IRepository<Culture> cultureRepository) { this.cultureRepository = cultureRepository; } Last step is to see if it works multi-tenant-like: it does not! The weird thing is this: using some line of code and writing debug messages in a log file i verified that the correct handler is selected! BUT this handler seems not to be injected in the DomainService. I ALWAYS get the first handler (that's the logic in my SelectHandler) Can anybody verify this behavior? Is injection not working in RIA Services? Or am i missing something basic?? Development environment: Visual Studio 2010 Beta2 Thanks in advance

    I am having difficulties when trying to insert files into an MsSQL database. I'll try to break this down as best as I can: What data type should I be using to store image files (jpeg/png/gif/etc)? Right now my table is using the image data type, but I am curious if varbinary would be a better option. How would I go about inserting the image into the database? Does Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio have any built in functions that allow insertions of files into tables? If so, how is that done? Also, how could this be done through the use of an HTML form with PHP handling the input data and placing it into the table? How would I fetch the image from the table and display it on the page? I understand how to SELECT the cell's contents, but how would I go about translating that into a picture. Would I have to have a header(Content type: image/jpeg)? I have no problem doing any of these things with MySQL, but the MsSQL environment is still new to me, and I am working on a project for my job that requires the use of stored procedures to grab various data.     We are migrating to Sun Studio 12.1 and with the new compiler [ CC: Sun C++ 5.10 SunOS_sparc 2009/06/03 ]. I am getting compilation error while compiling a code that compiled fine with earlier version of Sun Compiler [ CC: Sun WorkShop 6 update 2 C++ 5.3 2001/05/15 ]. This is the compilation error I get.   • Visual Studio 2010 Bootstrap Folder?

    We currently run a VS2005 app/environment and im investigating upgrading to 2010. But before i can say yes its all good, go buy bossman... I have to confirm that a bootstrap for a thridparty driver install which is included on our installation cd can be used/included (its a usb security dongle so drivers MUST be included/setup for our app to run). It is in the list of available pre-reqs but i didnt put it in the vs2010 bootstrap folder so is this coming from my vs2005 install? or the fact that i had previously selected it in the installer and its saved/loaded that in vs2010? Either way its got a little error icon and says its not found so i get errors on build. I want to resolve this and have it in the list of available pre-reqs as we did for 2005. i.e. copy it to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\BootStrapper folder... But i cant seem to find where the bootstraps are for vs2010? does it not use them? Naturally ive searched the entire vs folder structure for appropriate files/folders but nothing? Where/How is this now done?

  • visual analysis of web pages in ruby

    I'm looking to write some code that does visual analysis of web pages, preferably using Ruby. My code will need to be able to determine the top, left, width, height, background color, color, and font size for all the elements in the DOM. Of course, these values can only be calculated once all CSS is applied. So, I don't think that Nokogiri is up for the job. Ultimately, I'm trying to use this data in a VIPS-like (Vision-Based Page Segmentation) algorithm in an attempt to find the main content in downloaded news articles. I've considered using Watir to drive Chrome or Firefox and then extract the data. The problem is that browsers can't be run headless through Watir (I think). Ultimately, this code will be running on an array of Linux servers in a data center. So, the code won't have easy access to an X Server for displaying the browser. I suppose one solution is to use Watir and run a headless X Server on the Linux servers. That's a bit of a pain, but it looks like my best option right now. Does anyone have any better ideas?

    I'm running Mac OSX on a MacBookPro (UK keyboard). I run windows XP under parallels in a VM. I run Visual Studio .Net 2003 and 2008 in XP in the VM when i need to. I have English United Kingdom and English United states keyboards setup in XP. (they switch sometimes for no apparent reason) There is no hash "#" key on my mac's keyboard. However, in OSX I can get a hash with an alt+3 key combination. But In Windows XP... I can not make a "#" character. I can go to the character map in windows and copy a hash.. switch into OSX and copy a hash.. search in code and copy a hash.. but I can not make a hash in XP using my keyboard without typing U+0023: ... which you can imagine is annoying. coding anything with hash symbols is becoming a choir. Anyone got any advice or key mapping tricks I can use to get hash characters working in XP using my mac UK keyboard?

  • Unit testing ASP.NET MVC 2 routes with areas bails out on AreaRegistration.RegisterAllAreas()

    I'm unit testing my routes in ASP.NET MVC 2. I'm using MSTest and I'm using areas as well. When I call AreaRegistration.RegisterAllAreas() however, it throws this exception: System.InvalidOperationException: System.InvalidOperationException: This method cannot be called during the application's pre-start initialization stage.. OK, so I reckon I can't call it from my class initializer. But when can I call it? I don't have an Application_Start in my test obviously.
