How to generate a script for changing a column of varchar to xml type with data being converted?

Initially I have a column (partner_email) of varchar.Now a recent change has come where it needs to be changed to be changed to the XML type but the previous records needs to be reserve into the new column. Now if I ran it for the next time, it am getting an error Msg 8116, Level 16, State 1, Line 4 Argument data type xml is invalid for argument 1 of replace function. Caution: Changing any part of an object name could break scripts and stored procedures. The intention is that, if the partner_email column is varchar, the script will change it to xml type and will convert all the data in xml format . If I ran it second time, it should ignore the statement. How to achieve this? Does Apache ever give incorrect "out of threads" errors?

Lately our Apache web server has been giving us this error multiple times per day: [Tue Apr 06 01:07:10 2010] [error] Server ran out of threads to serve requests. Consider raising the ThreadsPerChild setting We raised our ThreadsPerChild setting from 50 to 100, but we still get the error. Our access logs indicate that these errors never even happen at periods of high load. For example, here's an excerpt from our access log (ip addresses and some urls are edited for privacy). Since the Apache server runs as a separate process and the database doesn't record any problems when this error occurs, I'm doubtful that Oracle is the problem. Unfortunately, the errors are freaking out our sysadmins, who are inclined to blame any and all problems which occur with the server on this error. Is this a known bug in Apache that I simply haven't been able to find any reference to through Google?

In the end my problem is adding the "tempProduct" object to the mutable array dataArray so that I can customize the table cells. Using the json framework im parsing out some json which returns an array of NSDictionary objects. Stepping through that my dictionary objects look good, I populate my custom object with properties for all my fields which goes through fine, and the values look right. However I cant add this to the array, I've tried several different implementations doesn't work. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. In some instances doing a po tempProduct prints the description and sometimes it does not. same with right clicking on the variable and choosing print description. Big Data – Is Big Data Relevant to me? – Big Data Questionnaires – Guest Post by Vinod Kumar

In my daily customer interactions this buzz of “Big Data” always comes up, I react generally saying – “Sir, do you really have a ‘Big Data’ problem or do you have a big Data problem?” Generally, there is a silence in the air when I ask this question. Data is everywhere in organizations – be it big data, small data, all data and for few it is bad data which is same as no data :). Wow, don’t discount me as someone who opposes “Big Data”, I am a big supporter as much as I am a critic of the abuse of this term by the people. In this post, I wanted to let my mind flow so that you can also think in the direction I want you to see these concepts. In any case, this is not an exhaustive dump of what is in my mind – but you will surely get the drift how I am going to question Big Data terms from customers!!! Is Big Data Relevant to me? Many of my customers talk to me like blank whiteboard with no idea – “why Big Data”. They want to jump into the bandwagon of technology and they want to decipher insights from their unexplored data a.k.a. unstructured data with structured data. So what are these industry scenario’s that come to mind? Here are some of them: Financials Fraud detection: Banks and Credit cards are monitoring your spending habits on real-time basis. Customer Segmentation: applies in every industry from Banking to Retail to Aviation to Utility and others where they deal with end customer who consume their products and services. Customer Sentiment Analysis: Responding to negative brand perception on social or amplify the positive perception. Sales and Marketing Campaign: Understand the impact and get closer to customer delight. Call Center Analysis: attempt to take unstructured voice recordings and analyze them for content and sentiment. Medical Reduce Re-admissions: How to build a proactive follow-up engagements with patients. Patient Monitoring: How to track Inpatient, Out-Patient, Emergency Visits, Intensive Care Units etc. Preventive Care: Disease identification and Risk stratification is a very crucial business function for medical. Claims fraud detection: There is no precise dollars that one can put here, but this is a big thing for the medical field. Retail Customer Sentiment Analysis, Customer Care Centers, Campaign Management. Supply Chain Analysis: Every sensors and RFID data can be tracked for warehouse space optimization. Location based marketing: Based on where a check-in happens retail stores can be optimize their marketing. Telecom Price optimization and Plans, Finding Customer churn, Customer loyalty programs Call Detail Record (CDR) Analysis, Network optimizations, User Location analysis Customer Behavior Analysis Insurance Fraud Detection & Analysis, Pricing based on customer Sentiment Analysis, Loyalty Management Agents Analysis, Customer Value Management This list can go on to other areas like Utility, Manufacturing, Travel, ITES etc. So as you can see, there are obviously interesting use cases for each of these industry verticals. These are just representative list. Where to start? A lot of times I try to quiz customers on a number of dimensions before starting a Big Data conversation. Are you getting the data you need the way you want it and in a timely manner? Can you get in and analyze the data you need? How quickly is IT to respond to your BI Requests? How easily can you get at the data that you need to run your business/department/project? How are you currently measuring your business? Can you get the data you need to react WITHIN THE QUARTER to impact behaviors to meet your numbers or is it always “rear-view mirror?” How are you measuring: The Brand Customer Sentiment Your Competition Your Pricing Your performance Supply Chain Efficiencies Predictive product / service positioning What are your key challenges of driving collaboration across your global business? What the challenges in innovation? What challenges are you facing in getting more information out of your data? Note: Garbage-in is Garbage-out. Hold good for all reporting / analytics requirements Big Data POCs? A number of customers get into the realm of setting a small team to work on Big Data – well it is a great start from an understanding point of view, but I tend to ask a number of other questions to such customers. Some of these common questions are: To what degree is your advanced analytics (natural language processing, sentiment analysis, predictive analytics and classification) paired with your Big Data’s efforts? Do you have dedicated resources exploring the possibilities of advanced analytics in Big Data for your business line? Do you plan to employ machine learning technology while doing Advanced Analytics? How is Social Media being monitored in your organization? What is your ability to scale in terms of storage and processing power? Do you have a system in place to sort incoming data in near real time by potential value, data quality, and use frequency? Do you use event-driven architecture to manage incoming data? Do you have specialized data services that can accommodate different formats, security, and the management requirements of multiple data sources? Is your organization currently using or considering in-memory analytics? To what degree are you able to correlate data from your Big Data infrastructure with that from your enterprise data warehouse? Have you extended the role of Data Stewards to include ownership of big data components? Do you prioritize data quality based on the source system (that is Facebook/Twitter data has lower quality thresholds than radio frequency identification (RFID) for a tracking system)? Do your retention policies consider the different legal responsibilities for storing Big Data for a specific amount of time? Do Data Scientists work in close collaboration with Data Stewards to ensure data quality? How is access to attributes of Big Data being given out in the organization? Are roles related to Big Data (Advanced Analyst, Data Scientist) clearly defined? How involved is risk management in the Big Data governance process? Is there a set of documented policies regarding Big Data governance? Is there an enforcement mechanism or approach to ensure that policies are followed? Who is the key sponsor for your Big Data governance program? (The CIO is best) Do you have defined policies surrounding the use of social media data for potential employees and customers, as well as the use of customer Geo-location data? How accessible are complex analytic routines to your user base? What is the level of involvement with outside vendors and third parties in regard to the planning and execution of Big Data projects? What programming technologies are utilized by your data warehouse/BI staff when working with Big Data? These are some of the important questions I ask each customer who is actively evaluating Big Data trends for their organizations. These questions give you a sense of direction where to start, what to use, how to secure, how to analyze and more. Sign off Any Big data is analysis is incomplete without a compelling story. The best way to understand this is to watch Hans Rosling – Gapminder (2:17 to 6:06) videos about the third world myths. Don’t get overwhelmed with the Big Data buzz word, the destination to what your data speaks is important. In this blog post, we did not particularly look at any Big Data technologies. Asp.NET custom templated datalist throws argument out of range (index) on button press

I have a class BaseTemplate public abstract class BaseTemplate : ITemplate This adds the controls, and provides abstract methods to implement in the inheriting class. The inheriting class then adds its html according to its data source and manages the data binding. This all works fine - I get the control appearing with properly parsed html. The problem is that the base class adds controls into the template that have their own CommandName arguments; the idea is that the class that implements the custom templated dataList will provide the logic of setting the Selected and Edit Indexes. This class also manages the data binding, etc. It sets all of the templates on the datalist in the Init method (which was another cause of this exception). The exception gets thrown when I hit one of these buttons - I have tried hooking up both their click and command events everywhere in case this was the problem. I have also ensured that their command names do not match any of the system ones. The stack trace does not include any references to my methods or objects which is why I am so stuck. It is the most unhelpful message I can imagine. The really frustrating thing is that I cannot get a breakpoint to fire - i.e. the problem is happening after I click the button, but before and of my code can execute. The last time this exception happened was when I had this code in a user control and was assigning the templates to the datalist in the PageLoad. I moved these into init to fix that problem; however, this is a problem that was there then and I have no idea what is causing it let alone how to solve it (and index out of range doesn't really help without knowing what index.) Getting the Action during model binding

Hi, Is there a way of getting the Action, and reading any attributes, during the model binding phase? The scenario is this: I've got a default model binder set-up for a certain data-type, but depending on how it's being used (which is controlled via an attribute on the action) I need to ignore a set of data. I can use the RouteData on the controller context and see the action name, which I can use to go get the data, but wondered if that information is already available. Additionally, if the action in question is an asynchronous one, they'd be more processing involved in looking it up...

Two-way databinding of a custom templated asp.net control

I hate long code snippets and I'm sorry about this one, but it turns out that this asp.net stuff can't get much shorter and it's so specific that I haven't been able to generalize it without a full code listing. I just want simple two-way, declarative, edit-only databinding to a single instance of an object. Not a list of objects of a type with a bunch of NotImplementedExceptions for Add, Delete, and Select, but just a single view-state persisted object. This is certainly something that can be done but I've struggled with an implementation for years. This newest, closest implementation was inspired by this article from 4-Guys-From-Rolla. Unfortunately, after implementing, I'm getting the following error and I don't know what I'm missing: System.InvalidOperationException: Databinding methods such as Eval(), XPath(), and Bind() can only be used in the context of a databound control. If I don't use Bind(), and only use Eval() functionality, it works. In that way, the error is especially confusing. Update: Actually, using Eval() does NOT work, but using <%# Container.SampleString %> works. However, Eval("SampleString") gives the same error. That leads me back to this article I found earlier but had discarded. Now I believe it might be related, though I haven't cracked it yet ... Dashcode: How to create a custom/new Project Template?

I'm trying to customize the javascript that Dashcode uses. So that I won't step on Apple's Project Templates, I want to make a custom project template that would appear as a choice after you click "New Project." I have been able to modify one of the existing templates (like, Custom, Browser, Utility, RSS, and Podcast). I can not, however, seem to add a new template to the list, like adding "JJ's Awesome New Cross Platform Template" as a choice. I have tried copying the directory Plugins/TemplateWebCustom.wdgtTemplate and changing in Custom's Info.plist file the com.apple.Dashcode.template.web.custom to, say com.apple.Dashcode.template.web.custom2 and in Resouces/project.plist updating the key value pair: TemplateIdentifier ==>com.apple.Dashcode.template.web.custom Is it possible to add a new Project Template? What is the "proper" way to get the value stored in a particular field within a custom Drupal node? I've created a custom module, with a custom node, with a custom URL field. Extending struts 2 "property" data tag

Hi, We are currently developing a project with Struts2. We have a module on which we display a large amount of data on read-only fields from a group of beans via the "property" Struts 2 data tag (i.e. <s:property value="aBeanProperty" /) on a jsp file. In some cases most of the fields might come empty, so a blank is being displayed on screen. Our customer is now requesting us to display default string (i.e. "N/A") whenever a property comes empty, so that it is displayed in place of the blank spaces currently shown. We are looking for a way to achieve this in a clean and maintainable way. The 'property' tag comes with a 'default' attribute on which one can define a default value in cases when the accessed property comes as null. However, most of our properties are empty strings, therefore it does not work in our case. Another solution we are thinking of is to define a base class for all of our beans, and define a util method which will validate if a string is null or empty and then return the default value. Then we would call this method from each bean getter. And yes this would be tiresome and kind of ugly :), therefore we are holding out on this one in case of a better solution. Now, we have in mind a solution which we think would be the best but have not had luck on how implement it. We are planning on extending the 'property' tag some way, defining a new 'default' attribute so that besides working on null properties, it also do so on empty strings ("", " ", etc). Therefore we would only need to replace the original s:property tag with our new custom tag, and the desired result would be achieved without touching java code. Do you have an idea on how to do this? Also, any other clever solution (maybe some sort of design pattern?) on how to default the values of a large amount of property beans are welcome too! (Or maybe, even there might be some tag that does this already in Struts2??) Thanks in advance.

In one of my previous guest blog on SQL Authority, I wrote about “Additional Connection Parameter” tab of login screen in SQL Server Management Studio (a.k.a. SSMS). On the similar lines, this blog is going to show little less known new feature of login main screen (“Connect to Server”) of SSMS 2012. You might have seen below screen countless times and you might wonder what is there is blog about in this simple screen. Well, continue reading and you would get the answer. Many times, DBA have to login to production server from non-regular machine, may be a developer’s workstation. Once you login to SQL, do your work and close the management studio. Do you know that your server name is saved in management studio? Of course, very useful feature because you may not like to type server name/IP address every time. Whatever servers you have connected, it would be stored by management studio. But sometime, it’s annoying! What you would do if you want SQL Server Management Studio to forget “all” the servers listed in drop down of Server name? To do that, you need to know how and where it’s stored. You can use one of my favorite tool from sysinternals called Process Monitor (also known as ProcMon) and easily figure out that this is stored in a file under your windows user profile. Below is the file in SQL 2008 R2 Management Studio. %appdata%\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Shell\SqlStudio.bin For SQL Server 2012, here is what we can see in ProcMon So, the path is %appdata%\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Shell\SqlStudio.bin So far, you might wonder, where is the new feature? I have been asked by many users to delete entries from SSMS “Connect to Server” server name list. Well, unofficially, you can delete the file directly which we found via ProcMon. Note that delete file to get rid of server list is not officially supported by Microsoft. Better way to achieve this is provided in SSMS 2012. To delete the servers from the list, highlight the name we want to delete (via keyboard or mouse) and then press delete key via keyboard. We can’t be multi-select and has to be done one by one. We can delete as many entries we want. I have delete few from first screenshot taken and here is the modified version. This is not available in SQL 2008 R2 and its previous version. I'm running into a problem with a new production server whereto I'm transferring projects. The HTML output of the PHP applications isn't compressed by the Apache mod_deflate module. Other resources, as stylesheet and javascript files, even html pages, which are served with the same Content-type (text/html) as the PHP output, are compressed! This won't work in our setup, because we extend the service locator's interface in such a way that if the type isn't Unity-based, the registration logic is not invoked.

in haskell, why do I need to specify type constraints, why can't the compiler figure them out?

Consider the function, add a b = a + b This works: *Main> add 1 2 3 However, if I add a type signature specifying that I want to add things of the same type: add :: a -> a -> a add a b = a + b I get an error: test.hs:3:10: Could not deduce (Num a) from the context () arising from a use of `+' at test.hs:3:10-14 Possible fix: add (Num a) to the context of the type signature for `add' In the expression: a + b In the definition of `add': add a b = a + b So GHC clearly can deduce that I need the Num type constraint, since it just told me: add :: Num a => a -> a -> a add a b = a + b Works. Why does GHC require me to add the type constraint? If I'm doing generic programming, why can't it just work for anything that knows how to use the + operator? In C++ template programming, you can do this easily: #include <string> #include <cstdio> using namespace std; template<typename T> T add(T a, T b) { return a + b; } int main() { printf("%d, %f, %s\n", add(1, 2), add(1.0, 3.4), add(string("foo"), string("bar")).c_str()); return 0; } The compiler figures out the types of the arguments to add and generates a version of the function for that type. There seems to be a fundamental difference in Haskell's approach, can you describe it, and discuss the trade-offs? It seems to me like it would be resolved if GHC simply filled in the type constraint for me, since it obviously decided it was needed. Still, why the type constraint at all? Is dynamic_cast what I should use here? Thanks in advance EDIT: I know above code is much like plain C and surely sucks from the C++ point of view but is just I have the following situation and I was trying something before really implementing it: I have two arrays of length n but both arrays will never have an object at the same index. Hence, or I have array1[i]!=NULL or array2[i]!=NULL. This is obviously a waste of memory so I thought everything would be solved if I could have both kind of objects in a single array of length n. I am looking something like Cocoa's (Objective-C) NSArray where you don't care about the type of the object to be put in. Not knowing the type of the object is not a problem since you can use other method to get the class of a certain later. Is there something like it in c++ (preferably not third party C++ libraries) ? Visual Studio not recognizing "BuildStep"

I'm trying to add an automatic post-build trigger to run NDepend after an automated team build in TFS 2010. NDepend's website provided code for integrating this capability, and so I have pasted their code into my .csproj file where they said for it to go, but I receive errors on the build. The errors refer to two of the three "BuildStep" tags I have in the code snippet. Database model for keeping track of likes/shares/comments on blog posts over time

My goal is to keep track of the popular posts on different blog sites based on social network activity at any given time. The goal is not to simply get the most popular now, but instead find posts that are popular compared to other posts on the same blog. For example, I follow a tech blog, a sports blog, and a gossip blog. The tech blog gets waaay more readership than the other two blogs, so in raw numbers every post on the tech blog will always out number views on the other two. So lets say the average tech blog post gets 500 facebook likes and the other two get an average of 50 likes per post. Then when there is a sports blog post that has 200 fb likes and a gossip blog post with 300 while the tech blog posts today have 500 likes I want to highlight the sports and gossip blog posts (more likes than average vs tech blog with more # of likes but just average for the blog) The approach I am thinking of taking is to make an entry in a database for each blog post. Every x minutes (say every 15 minutes) I will check how many likes/shares/comments an entry has received on all the social networks (facebook, twitter, google+, linkeIn). So over time there will be a history of likes for each blog post, i.e post 1234 after 15 min: 10 fb likes, 4 tweets, 6 g+ after 30 min: 15 fb likes, 15 tweets, 10 g+ ... ... after 48 hours: 200 fb likes, 25 tweets, 15 g+ By keeping a history like this for each blog post I can know the average number of likes/shares/tweets at any give time interval. So for example the average number of fb likes for all blog posts 48hrs after posting is 50, and a particular post has 200 I can mark that as a popular post and feature/highlight it. A consideration in the design is to be able to easily query the values (likes/shares) for a specific time-frame, i.e. fb likes after 30min or tweets after 24 hrs in-order to compute averages with which to compare against (or should averages be stored in it's own table?) If this approach is flawed or could use improvement please let me know, but it is not my main question. My main question is what should a database scheme for storing this info look like? Assuming that the above approach is taken I am trying to figure out what a database schema for storing the likes over time would look like. I am brand new to databases, in doing some basic reading I see that it is advisable to make a 3NF database. I have come up with the following possible schema. Schema 1 DB Popular Posts Table: Post post_id ( primary key(pk) ) url title Table: Social Activity activity_id (pk) url (fk) type (i.e. facebook,twitter,g+) value timestamp This was my initial instinct (base on my very limited db knowledge). As far as I under stand this schema would be 3NF? I searched for designs of similar database model, and found this question on stackoverflow, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11216080/data-structure-for-storing-height-and-weight-etc-over-time-for-multiple-users . The scenario in that question is similar (recording weight/height of users overtime). Taking the accepted answer for that question and applying it to my model results in something like: Schema 2 (same as above, but break down the social activity into 2 tables) DB Popular Posts Table: Post post_id (pk) url title Table: Social Measurement measurement_id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp Table: Social stat stat_id (pk) measurement_id (fk) type (i.e. facebook,twitter,g+) value The advantage I see in schema 2 is that I will likely want to access all the values for a given time, i.e. when making a measurement at 30min after a post is published I will simultaneous check number of fb likes, fb shares, fb comments, tweets, g+, linkedIn. So with this schema it may be easier get get all stats for a measurement_id corresponding to a certain time, i.e. all social stats for post 1234 at time x. Another thought I had is since it doesn't make sense to compare number of fb likes with number of tweets or g+ shares, maybe it makes sense to separate each social measurement into it's own table? Schema 3 DB Popular Posts Table: Post post_id (pk) url title Table: fb_likes fb_like_id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp value Table: fb_shares fb_shares_id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp value Table: tweets tweets__id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp value Table: google_plus google_plus_id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp value As you can see I am generally lost/unsure of what approach to take. I'm sure this typical type of database problem (storing measurements overtime, i.e temperature statistic) that must have a common solution. Is there a design pattern/model for this, does it have a name? I tried searching for "database periodic data collection" or "database measurements over time" but didn't find anything specific. What would be an appropriate model to solve the needs of this problem?
