  • How can I demonstrate the benefits of abstractions to an old-time C programmer?

    Hi, there's this senior developer in my company that programs in C. I happen to be from functional background (ML, to be specific). This senior C programmer refuses to use abstractions because "abstraction is for lame programmers and _real_ programmers do not need it." I can not seem to convince him otherwise Is it a problem with only this programmer or do all C (and other lower level language) programmers have this opinion that abstraction is for lame programmers?

    Ignoring all the characteristics of each languages and focusing SOLELY on speed, which language is better performance-wise? You'd think this would be a rather simple question to answer, but I haven't found a decent one. I'm aware that some types of operations may be faster with python, and vice-versa, but I cannot find any detailed information on this. Can anyone shed some light on the performance differences?

    Where can I find information on how to properly document a programming language? What I mean is that there seems to be a standard way to document code. php.net and api.jquery.com seem to document there code the a similar way. For example, the trim() description on php.net. string trim ( string $str [, string $charlist ] ) And likewise on jquery.com .animate( properties, [ duration ], [ easing ], [ callback ] ) Does anyone even know what this syntax is called?

  • MonoRail - How to grab records where a column isn't null

    Hey, In MonoRail/Active Record if I want to grab all records that have a certain column equal to null, I can do: public static Category[] AllParentCategories() { return (FindAllByProperty("Parent.Id", null)); } However, what if I want to grab all records where that column doesn't equal null? I can't figure out how to do that using this FindAllByProperty method, is there another method that is more flexible or a way to grab records using a linq-like querying language? Thanks, Justin

    Currently I am migrating MSSQL to MYSQL.I am using the MySQL ODBC 3.51 driver to connect to mysql using odbc connectivity.I have telugu language charectors stored in the table.They are not showing properly while using the mysql odbc driver, but they are showing up properly while using the sqlserver odbc driver.     hi I write a program to delete a file from somewhere of my harddisk in 8086 but when i use int 21h (ah=41h) an error happens and carry set to 1.and I cannot delete that. does anyone know what can I do?     The JFileChooser don't provide support for my language, I'd translate strings defined in the file http://www.rgagnon.com/javadetails/JavaUIDefaults.txt with the UIManager.put(), but I'm not finding the popup strings ("view", "refresh" and "new folder" options when you right-click). Does anyone know where can I find them to translate?

  • Are there any MVP Frameworks projects out there?

    MVC is used a number of popular frameworks. To name just a few, Ruby on Rails, ASP.NET MVC, Monorail, Spring MVC. Are there any equivalent frameworks using any variant of MVP? Most of the examples I've found online seem to be custom implementations of the pattern rather than reusable frameworks. Suggestions need not be specific to any particular programming language, my interest is mostly academic.
