  What is the maximum number of characters that can be used to define the key_name of a datastore entity? Is it bad to have very long key_names? For example: Lets say we use key_names of a 170 characters, which is the length of a Twitter message 140 plus 10 numeric characters for latitude and 10 for longtitude and 10 for a timestamp. (Reasoning of such a key_name: So by using such a key_name we can easily and quickly be sure of no duplicate postings, since the same message should not come from the same place and time more than once.)

  I am making a call from within Java to a jnilib function and get different logs on PPC and Intel. Mac OS X/10.6.3/x86_64, Java 1.6.0_17 Looking for devices matching vendor ID=7982 and product ID=10. • NSSortDescriptor for NSFetchRequest sorting unexpectedly

  My entity has a property (sortOrder) that is of the type Decimal(NSDecimalNumber) but when I execute a fetch request using that property as a key, I get back results in a seemingly random order. If I output the value of the property I get really strange values until I get it's intValue. Example: The first run produces this result. The first value is the raw value of the property. The second is the intValue, the actual value of the property when I created the object - or at least I thought. 85438160 10 74691424 20 Second run... 85333744 10 85339168 20 Third... 85263696 20 85269568 10 What the hell?

  Hi, this is a question for the algorithms gurus out there :-) Let S be a set of intervals of the natural numbers that might overlap and b a box size. Assume that for each interval, the range is strictly less than b. I want to find the minimum set of intervals of size b (let's call it M) so all the intervals in S are contained in the intervals of M. Trivial example: S = {[1..4], [2..7], [3..5], [8..15], [9..13]} b = 10 M = {[1..10], [8..18]} // so ([1..4], [2..7], [3..5]) are inside [1..10] and ([8..15], [9..13]) are inside [8..18] I think a greedy algorithm might not work always, so if anybody knows of a solution of this problem (or a similar one that can be converted into), that would be great.   How can a list of vectors be elegantly normalized, in NumPy? Here is an example that does not work: from numpy import * vectors = array([arange(10), arange(10)]) # All x's, then all y's norms = apply_along_axis(linalg.norm, 0, vectors) # Now, what I was expecting would work: print vectors.T / norms # vectors.T has 10 elements, as does norms, but this does not work The last operation yields "shape mismatch: objects cannot be broadcast to a single shape". How can the normalization of the 2D vectors in vectors be elegantly done, with NumPy? Edit: Why does the above not work while adding a dimension to norms does work (as per my answer below)?

  I asked this last week over the weekend and it got buried in the archives before anyone could answer. So forgive me if you've already seen this. I teach classes and want to be able to select those students who have taken one class, but not another class. I have two tables: lessons_slots which is the table for every class such as: -------------------- -ID name slots- -1 basics 10 - -2 advanced 10 - -3 basics 10 - --------------------- The other table is class_roll, which holds enrollment info, such as: -------------------- -sID classid firstname lastname- -1 1 Jo Schmo -2 1 Person Two ... -13 2 Jo Schmo --------------------- What I want to do, I select everyone who has not had the advanced class (for example). I've tried doing SELECT * FROM lessons_slots LEFT JOIN class_roll ON lessons_slots.ID = class_roll.classid WHERE lessons_slots.name != 'advanced' But that doesn't work...All it does is eliminate that row, without eliminating the user. I want Jo Schmo, for example, to not show up in the results. Any ideas?

• Sharepoint Blog Category view - Pagination issue...

  Folks, I am facing a rather strange issue. In my Sharepoint Blog, I am not able to view more than 10 posts when I click on the Category filter page. The page only shows the latest 10 posts and when I click on the pagination for the next 10, it simply says that "There are no posts in this category." I tried searching online and some one had a solution to it too, but that is with the Query String (URL) Filter which is not available in MOSS2007 Standard edition... How can I get around this? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

  Is there a way to use NSNumberFormatter to get the 'th' 'st' 'nd' 'rd' number endings? EDIT: Looks like it does not exist. • Get the number of calendar weeks between 2 dates in C#

  For the purposes of this question, let's assume the user will be from the US and will use the standard Gregorian calendar. So, a calendar week starts on Sunday and ends on Saturday. What I'm trying to do is determine the number of calendar weeks that exist between two dates. A perfect example of my problem exists in October 2010. Between 10/16 and 10/31 there are 4 calendar weeks. View a picture of October 2010 October 10 - October 16 October 17 - October 23 October 24 - October 30 October 31 - November 6 I'd prefer to stay away from any hardcoded logic like: if (Day == DayOfWeek.Saturday && LastDayOfMonth == 31) { ... } Can anyone think of a logical way to do this?

  I have a table where each row has 13 TD elements. I want to show and hide the first 10 of them when I toggle a link. These 10 TD elements all have an IDs with the prefix "foo" and a two digit number for its position (e.g., "foo01"). What's the fastest way to select them across the entire table? $("td:nth-child(-n+10)") or $("td[id^=foo]") or is it worth concatenating all of the ids? $("#foo01, #foo02, #foo03, #foo04, #foo05, #foo06, #foo07, #foo08, #foo09, #foo10") Is there another approach I should be considering as well?

• Need a formula for calculating the tax portion of a total amount.

  In Australia we have to advertise products with tax already added, so rather than say a product is $10 + $1 GST = $11, we normally work backwards and say "ok, total is $10, how much of that is GST ?" For example, for a $10 total, you do 10 * (1 /11) = 0.91, which is the tax component of the $10 total. My problem is I need calculate a formula for working out the taxable component when the tax rate is a variable. So far I've made this calculation although I'm not sure how correct an assertion it is: 10 * (1 / x) = 0.09 * (1 / y) where y = 10, x = 11 Basically i want to work out x on the left hand side when I know that the tax rate is 0.05 for example, which will give me a formula that I can use to calculate the taxable component of an total figure. I want a function into which I can plug in the total price and the tax rate, and get back the taxable component of the total price. I'd really appreciate the help with this as it really makes my head hurt ! :")

• Creating a Large Matrix in ff

  I am trying to create a huge matrix in ff, and I know that ff is good for this sort of thing. But, there is a major problem. The dimensions of the matrix exceed .Machine$max_integer! I am running on a 64 bit machine, using 64bit R and 64bit ff. Is there any way to get around this problem? It's been suggested that R is using the MAXINT value from stdint.h.   I have five tables in my database. Members, items, comments, votes and countries. I want to get 10 items. I want to get the count of comments and votes for each item. I also want the member that submitted each item, and the country they are from. After posting here and elsewhere, I started using subselects to get the counts, but this query is taking 10 seconds or more! SELECT `items_2`.*, (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `comments` WHERE (comments.Script = items_2.Id) AND (comments.Active = 1)) AS `Comments`, (SELECT COUNT(votes.Member) FROM `votes` WHERE (votes.Script = items_2.Id) AND (votes.Active = 1)) AS `votes`, `countrys`.`Name` AS `Country` FROM `items` AS `items_2` INNER JOIN `members` ON items_2.Member=members.Id AND members.Active = 1 INNER JOIN `members` AS `members_2` ON items_2.Member=members.Id LEFT JOIN `countrys` ON countrys.Id = members.Country GROUP BY `items_2`.`Id` ORDER BY `Created` DESC LIMIT 10 My question is whether this is the right way to do this, if there's better way to write this statement OR if there's a whole different approach that will be better. Should I run the subselects separately and aggregate the information?

• Will SQL Server Partitioning increase performance without changing filegroups

  Scenario I have a 10 million row table. I partition it into 10 partitions, which results in 1 million rows per partition but I do not do anything else (like move the partitions to different file groups or spindles) Will I see a performance increase? Is this in effect like creating 10 smaller tables? If I have queries that perform key lookups or scans, will the performance increase as if they were operating against a much smaller table? I'm trying to understand how partitioning is different from just having a well indexed table, and where it can be used to improve performance. Would a better scenario be to move the old data (using partition switching) out of the primary table to a read only archive table? Is having a table with a 1 million row partition and a 9 million row partition analagous (performance wise) to moving the 9 million rows to another table and leaving only 1 million rows in the original table?

  Hi, I've the following code which causes crashes after sometime as i've set the below code in a timer:- CGImageRef cgImage = UIGetScreenImage(); [array addObject:(id)cgImage]; CGImageRelease(cgImage); Where initiallly i've declared "array" as: array = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; The timer goes well till 10 seconds as timer is of 1/10 seconds after 10 seconds it crashes. I think the application crashes because of EXC_BAD_EXCESS but dont know how to solve. Can Anybody help in solving the problem? Thanks in Adv.

• WCF Callback Contract Fiddler Debugging

  I'm trying to debug a WCF self-hosted service utilizing callbacks. Every 1/2 I make a callback to a SL3 app to display the latest changes (yes, there are tons of changes every 1/2 second). There are 3 services, one has new data every 1/2 second, one has new data every second, and another has new data every hour. I've set all of my timeouts, Send, Receive, Open and Close to 2 days 23 hours and 23 minutes, but I still get time out errors on the service side when I go to issue the callback. I'm using Fiddler and I notice that my service that has new data every hour is still showing up every 10 seconds. Fiddlier shows a Body length of -1, then 10 seconds later it changes to 0 and the response is HTTP 200, but the overall elapsed time is 10 seconds. What's going on here?

  What is a scalable way to select latest 10 items from each category. I have a schema list this: item category updated so I want to select 10 last update items from each category. The current solution I can come up with is to query for categories first and then issue some sort of union query: query = none for cat in categories: query += select top 10 from table where category=cat order by updated I am not sure how efficient this will be for bigger databases (1 million rows). If there is a way to do this in one go - that would be nice. Any help appreciated.

• need more complex index !

  I'm sorry if it's not an appropriate question for this site, and if it's necesary I'll close this question. But maybe someone could give me an ideea: I'm trying to find a more complex index to make an hierarchy. For example: 5 votes from 6 = 83% AND 500 votes from 600 = 83%; 10 votes from 600 = 1.66% If I make a hierarchy with the %, first two will be on the same place, but I think that 83% from 600 it's more valuable than the first one. I could compare 5, 10, 500, but again it's not fair because the third case (10 votes) will be in front of the first case (5 votes), wich it's not fair beacuse the third case has only 1.66% Maybe someone could give me an ideea how to give more weight for the second case but in the same time let the let the new entries have a fair chance.
