• Is paravirtualization evil?

  I have an VMWare ESX Server v3.5 with a few virtualized Debian Lenny VMs (kernel 2.6.22 with vmi) running Apache Tomcat 5.5. I enabled paravirtualization, and Disk IO increased from about 240MB/s to 380MB/s, making me a happy admin. The problem now is that my apache tomcat becomes deadlocked during startup, running with 200% CPU (I have 2 CPUS assigned to the VM), and don't know how to get both: A stable system and a fast system. I somewhere heared that paravirtualization is legacy anyway and won't be available on newer ESX servers. Is there a replacement for this seemingly performance-improving option, or is it discontinued becauses it is just unstable? What is the state of paravirtualization? Should I ignore it completely? • Why Can't Computers Off My Network See the Site?

  Have just set up Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc. on my Ubuntu OS, and I was wondering why computers that are not on my network can not see the basic index.html that Apache uses as the default. I set up the static ip address for my computer, and I use 192.168.1.100 for computers to view the simple site. Is there something I am missing that will allow others to access my site? (It is REALLY simple; no graphics, CSS, etc.)

• Installing Bugzilla on Ubuntu 9.04 and Plesk

  Hey guys. I'm trying to install the latest Bugzilla version on my ubuntu server. (Want to use a subdomain like bugs.domain.com) I already installed all necessary perl modules and check_modules.pl doesn't show any errors. But when I'm running the testserver.pl script I get the following: TEST-OK Webserver is running under group id in $webservergroup TEST-FAILED Fetch of images/padlock.png failed I'm also not able to visit ANY file within the bugzilla folder from the browser. I'm always getting a 404 error. The bugzilla folder and all containing files are set to apache as the owner. I tried to enter the apache configuration form the installation guide in the http.include file of the domain and in the vhosts.conf file of the subdomain as well. I don't know what to do... Playing with plesks' suexecgroup doesn't bring any solution... I hope you can help me! Thanks in advance!

• Own website fails to load first time

  I have a website running on a VPS, every time I first try to load the website the connection times out. If I press try again, it loads directly. I'm not sure whether this is a DNS issue or a server issue. As far as I know everything is set up correctly. Also, it has been doing this from the moment I got this server and set up my domain name. And that's about two to three months ago. You may take a look here: http://www.wegotcha.nl/ As you can see at this moment it's just an image, there are no scripts running in the background or anything. The only error Apache gives me is that favicon.ico cannot be found. It's an Apache webserver running on Ubuntu 12.04.1 (newest version) I update all packages almost every day (apt-get update && apt-get upgrade). I am merely an amateur on the area of webservers so any help will be appreciated. :)

• PhpMyAdmin Hangs On MySQL Error

  I'm currently running PhpMyAdmin 4.0.10 (the latest version supporting PHP 4.2.X) on my Amazon EC2 connecting to a MySQL database on RDS. Everything works perfectly fine except actions that return a mysql error message. Whether I perform "any" kind of action that will return a mysql error, Phpmyadmin will hang with the yellow "Loading" box forever without displaying anything. For example, if I perform the following command in MySQL CLI : select * from 123; It instantly returns the following error : ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '123' at line 1 which is completely normal because table 123 doesn't exist. However, if I execute the exact same command in the "SQL" box in Phpmyadmin, after I click "Go" it'll display "Loading" and stops there forever. Has anyone ever encountered this kind of issue with Phpmyadmin? Is this a bug or I have something wrong with my config.inc.php? Any help would be much appreciated.   I have 5 web servers (Apache/mod_perl) behind Amazon EC2 Elastic Load Balancing, when I deploy codes to the web servers, I am doing this.. For each machine, shutdown the Apache Update the code Start over the server and proceed to the next server I think when my server is shutdown, ELB will not distribute request to my server, but how about the request still serving? I think a better approach is Stop accepting new request from ELB Sleep for sometimes, shutdown web server only if all requests are responded Update the codes Start the server again But how to perform (1) and (2) from my local sever? Do I need to use AWS API? or other easy way to do it? Thanks.

• Pages partially load on rapid refresh

  I recently set up a VPS slice with 256MB to run a LAMP stack (Ubuntu 11.04, Apache2, Mysql, PHP5). So far I'm only running a simple Wordpress site on an IP-based virtual host I set up. The performance is excellent, but I've noticed that if I send multiple HTTP requests from the same IP in a short time period, only partial pages are rendered. Then if I wait a bit and refresh the page, the entire page loads again. I noticed this behaviour when accessing the site from two browsers from my office desktop, but it also presents itself if I quickly navigate the site from a single browser (any browser). I'm guessing this is an Apache phenomenon, as the pages are rendered correctly except under the conditions above, but perhaps I'm wrong here. Could it be my hosting company with some kind of DOS protection in place? As a relative Linux/server noob, I'd really appreciate any insight into what settings in Apache could explain this behaviour, and how I might go about changing it.

  I already use Google Analytics on my page, but I'd like to get additional info from log files. I've looked at various packages during last days, but nothing impressed me so far. Some requirements: must work on log file level (I use apache combined logs, but can configure apache to produce other types of logs) can generate static reports (windows/linux) or use GUI (windows only) should be easy to add custom user agents, and rerun analysis if it can recognize installation of eclipse plugins from log, that would be big plus understands google serp position referer should not require two days to setup (awstats, I am looking at you) should be still under active developement (i.e. analog isn't good answer) preferrably free, or at not very expensive :-) Any good analyzers programs out there?

• Accessing localhost (xampp) from another computer over LAN network - how to?

  I have just set up a wi-fi network at home. I have all my files on my desktop computer (192.168.1.56) and want to access localhost over there from another computer (192.168.1.2). On my desktop I can access localhost through the normal http://localhost. Apache is running on port 80 as usual. Exactly what do I have to do to achieve this? There is documentation on the net but they either don't work or are too fragment and confusing to understand. I think I have to make changes to my apache's httpd.conf file and the hosts file. Any ideas as to what changes to make?

• Self hosted Wordpress freezes for 20 seconds before sending the page

  I have a website with Wordpress and PHPBB integrated - and it's been fine for months.. then all of a sudden, it's unbelievably slow to load. There are no errors in the apache logs, but looking at the page in firebug shows a 20 second pause, before the page is delivered. more confusing, on the same server, same apache installation, PHPBB loads in 30ms, no delay. I tried the hogdetector wordpress plugin, which indicates that the delay is before the header is sent - which seems to agree with firebug. Any ideas how to troubleshoot this one further?

• Subversion 1.7.x and expat location in configure

  I am running CentOS 6.3 64bit and DirectAdmin control panel. Currently I have installed Apache Subversion 1.6.19 without any problems. I have installed expat and expat-devel and neon-devel using yum. When installing Apache Subversion 1.6.19 this configure command works fine: ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-ssl --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs --with-apr=/usr/bin/apr-config However when installing Apache Subversion 1.7.7 using the same configure command as above, I get this error after doing commmand "make": /etc/httpd/lib/libaprutil-1.so: undefined reference to `XML_StopParser' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [subversion/svnadmin/svnadmin] Error 1 However I found out I can solve that problem by adding this into the configure command: --with-expat=includes:lib_search_dirs:libs So it then looks like this: ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-ssl --with-expat=includes:lib_search_dirs:libs --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs --with-apr=/usr/bin/apr-config However that configure command then give this warning: configure: WARNING: Expat found amongst libraries used by APR-Util, but Subversion libraries might be needlessly linked against additional unused libraries. It can be avoided by specifying exact location of Expat in argument of --with-expat option. So I want to solve that. I have experimentet alot, but not been able to figure out how to "specifying exact location of Expat" in configure command, and how to find out what the location should be? However after a lot of searching I found this: http://subversion.tigris.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=3997 - that is a FreeBSD user saying this: Building Subversion 1.7.x on FreeBSD currently requires a configure flag: --with-expat=/usr/local/include:/usr/local/lib:expat As that is the default location of expat on that platform, it would be nice if configure detected it automatically. However I am not using FreeBSD, I am running CentOS 6.3 64bit. Also remember I said I have installed expat and expat-devel and neon-devel using yum. However I tried to use the expat/command path posted by the FreeBSD user, and it seems to work, it does not give errors when running configure command, and does not give errors when running "make". This is what I used then: ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-ssl --with-expat=/usr/local/include:/usr/local/lib:expat --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs --with-apr=/usr/bin/apr-config But this server is a production server, and therfor I need your help to advice if this is also correct to run on a CentOS server? Is the following path in expat command correct on CentOS?: --with-expat=/usr/local/include:/usr/local/lib:expat If not, please advice what it should be changed to.   Hi, I have 2 machines. Both running CentOS. Box1 is webserver with apache, php. Box2 is mysql, and file storage. The files will only be accessible from Box1 within the webapp. I'd like to somehow create a symlink or somesuch on box1 to a folder on box2 where uploaded files can be stored and retrieved. Security in mind, what would be the best way to go about linking these 2 boxes up in a transparent (to apache) way? NB: the boxes are connected directly to each other via a crossover cable; no lan access to box2. Much thanks!

• My computer gets hosted when using 3G

  I recently activated 3G(UMTS) connection on my cellular network. I use Nokia S60 phone as a modem while connecting from Scientific Linux 6. While I am able to access net pretty well, the problem is my computer gets hosted. By using ip-address in a web-browser, anyone can access my localhost (running apache), this never happens with my wireline (ADSL) connection. Furthermore, even the Shell prompt changes from: [mach2@localhost ~]$ to [[email protected] ~]$ where XX.XX.XX.XX is the IP of the 3G connection. The very thought of putting my machine 'in the wild' is disconcerting. How can I rectify the situation without disabling services like apache, sshd and others?

  I heard recently that Nginx has added caching to its reverse proxy feature. I looked around but couldn't find much info about it. I want to set up Nginx as a caching reverse proxy in front of Apache/Django: to have Nginx proxy requests for some (but not all) dynamic pages to Apache, then cache the generated pages and serve subsequent requests for those pages from cache. Ideally I'd want to invalidate cache in 2 ways: Set an expiration date on the cached item To explicitly invalidate the cached item. E.g. if my Django backend has updated certain data, I'd want to tell Nginx to invalidate the cache of the affected pages Is it possible to set Nginx to do that? How?

• XAMPP Closes the connection

  I want my XAMPP Apache server to host a file (The file is around 250mb) but the server closes the connection and won't let me download the file? Does xampp or apache have any download size limit or something? Tested with a smaller file , the problem is still present. It just doesn't let me download any file from the server.!!! • Where to look for regular scripts?

  It seems to me that our server freezes every 30 days around noon due to the huge utilization of xvda data transfer partition - writes are 50 times higher than normally (according to the health monitor in plesk). This seems to me as the reason why the apache & co becomes instable as (for example) all apache's processes are waiting to write their log (according to the service's full status). I am, however, unable to find any scheduled task that would be executed during that period. I have checked both cron and anacron setup and there is only one monthly anacron task which is not executed (according to the /var/log/cron - and there is nothing unusual) around noon. Are there any other places where to look for periodical processes? (I am just about to ask server's provider the same question about any external maintenance run around this time but I don't expect them to run anything time/resource consuming during the day.)

  Apache 2.2 CentOS Plesk 9.x I am using Plesk to manage my domain names on my virtual host.and GoDaddy for DNS I have created a new sub-domain blog using Plesk. I can see the httpd.include for example.com has a new virtualhost entry - blog.example.com I can also see folders have been created for the subdomain blog vhost\example.com folder But when I try to go to blog.example.com in the browser- I get an error - basically the host is not getting resolved. My site - example.com is working fine otherwise Any idea what could I be missing ? I did try restarting the apache web server as well

• How to emulate a domain name - Webmin Setup

  I am currently working on a client project where they are using a custom CMS which relies on having the specific domains configured for it to work properly. So in English, that means that when I try running the site on my test environment, the entire website fails because it isn't located on the primary domain (and I'm pretty sure the domain is hard coded since there's no control panel to adjust the file locations). Anyway what I wanted to ask is whether it is possible to use my test environment URL but have Apache and the DNS emulate my clients website URL locally, rather than calling the actual name servers. Right now I have a virtual host setup in Apache but I am not sure where to go from there. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

• What is the best Linux distro for a php web server? [on hold]

  We are planning to upgrade our hardware and at the same time we plan to reinstall all our web server from a fresh OS. Currently our web server is running on CentOS 4.7 on a dedicated server. We are using Apache, Mysql, PHP, SVN, FTP and all the needed tools for a web server managed through SSH. We plan to use a cloud server for the new web server. I don't know which Linux distro to take for this new server. Should I stay with Centos and just take the latest release 5.4 or should I switch to something else like a Debian base distro (Ubuntu Server)? The thing that I didn't like with CentOS was the none availability of the latest version of PHP and Apache on Yum. This make it harder to keep our webserver updated with the latest technologies... • what does the 'm' unit in munin mean?

  I'm using munin as a tool for monitoring my servers. On some of the graphs, the units are marked with a 'm'. For instance, my apache accesses graph is labeled 100m, 200m, 300m, along the y-axis. What does the 'm' mean? I understand 'M' (caps) is mega as in megabytes, the 'k' is kilo, the 'G' is giga, but what about 'm'? At first I thought it was million, but theres no way apache is serving 100 million accesses even per decade.

I'd like to know what are the common ways to configure an Apache and MySQL server that is secure and efficient. • PHP errors not being displayed

  I'm using PHP with Apache on Ubuntu 12.10. Errors are not being displayed to the browser for some reason and I can't figure it out. I have the following in my php.ini file: error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_DEPRECATED display_errors = On display_startup_errors = On log_errors = On I am also positive that I have edited the correct ini file by verifying it with php_ini_loaded_file(). I can also verify that the values are correctly set by doing the following in my script: echo ini_get("display_errors"); // Outputs 1 echo ini_get("display_startup_errors"); // Outputs 1 echo ini_get("log_errors"); // Outputs 1 echo ini_get("error_reporting"); // Outputs -1 I have tried what seems like every possible combination of these settings (and restarting Apache after each change) and it is just not outputting errors. I am also not using ini_set anywhere in the script. It is being set only from the ini file. Any ideas why errors aren't being displayed?

  In our mail server there are multiple virtual email domain hosted. User can use webmail.example.com (this is the first apache virtualhost) to check mail or they can use mail.THEIR-DOMAIN.com. If the put mail.THEIR-DOMAIN.com apache shows the webmail.example.com as it is the first virtualhost and mail.THEIR-DOMAIN.com doesn't exist. Recently we imposed https for webmail.example.com and added this mod_rewrite rule: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} But now users not getting the default webmail page as they were getting before. How can we redirect all request coming to the URL "mail.ANY-DOMAIN.com" to "https://webmail.example.com"? I've tried the following but it didn't work: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off RewriteRule (mail.*) https://webmail.example.com Thanks for your help in advance.
