• Win7 Hangs During App Install/Upgrade/Uninstall

  I have a custom built PC that intermittently hangs when installing, uninstalling, or upgrading applications. Technical Specs ASUS P5E w/ WiFi Motherboard Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 Processor 4x 2GB G.Skill DDR2 800 SDRAM ASUS EAH2900XT / Radeon HD 2900XT 512MB Video Card Under normal operation the machine runs reliably, even under heavy load, such as video transcoding. The temperature never gets anywhere near where I would worry about it. However, the machine regularly hangs (complete lockup, no response to keyboard or mouse, no activity on-screen) when either installing a new application, uninstalling an existing application, or applying patches to existing applications or the OS. This is extremely frustrating as this machine is primarily used as a HTPC. Several apps are configured for automatic updates, and these updates sometimes cause the machine to lockup while we are watching content on the PC. In previously investigating this issue, I found one likely problem could be my Logitech Webcam. The Logitech software has a bug that leaves an entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\SessionManager\PendingFileRenameOperations Which references the Temp directory. My registry contained this error, so I uninstalled the webcam software and deleted this registry key value. Unfortunately, the machine will still intermittently hang. I've noticed that the hangs always happen when an install/upgrade/uninstall requires elevated privileges (presumably to modify the registry). I can typically get at least one install/upgrade/uninstall to complete after a reboot, but after that it is a game of russian roulette to see if the operation will succeed or hang the machine. The event log is not helpful, as log messages end at the time of the hang, with no record of a warning or error. My only recourse when the machine hangs in this way is to perform a hard reset/power cycle. Any tips on how to further debug this issue are greatly appreciated.

• Oracle: 1 Large Server vs. 2 Smaller Servers?

  We are in the planning stages of setting up our production Oracle 10gR2 environment. Our budget gives us the ability to buy 2 processor licenses of Oracle DB Standard Edition. We have minimal experience with Oracle so I'll defer to anyone who has used it. We are trying to decide if we should set up a single dual quad-core box or 2 individual quad-core boxes in a RAC configuration. Our DB right now is about 60 GB, and at our peak, we'll have up to 150 concurrent users. Most of the big stuff is done via batch processing at night. My gut tells me that having 2 boxes in a RAC configuration can't be a bad thing because it provides a true hardware failover solution. DB stored in a shared LUN on a SAN via iSCSI. Plus if we ever need to add capacity, we already have boxes in place that can be upgraded with extra procs (I assume with zero downtime, since it's set up in a RAC config) if we add extra licenses, or RAM. Does RAC have any performance penalties? Will it add extra latency? Is there any true advantage for having dual processor boxes running these systems? If we build out the Oracle boxes with special hardware: hardware iSCSI cards, TOE NICs, will these boxes be solid? We are deploying on 64-bit Windows. So what would you do? One box or two?

• What is the typical maximum number of database connections for Oracle running on Windows server ?

  We are maintaining a database server that serve a large number of clients. Each client typically running serveral client-applications. The total number of connections to the database server (Oracle 9i) is reaching 800 connections on peak load. The windows 2003 server is starting to run out of memory. We are now planning to move to 64bit Windows in order to gain higher memory capability. As a developer I suggest moving to multi-tier architecture with conneciton pooling, which I believe is a natural solution to this problem. However, in order to support my idea, I want the information on: what exactly is the typical number of connections allowed for Oracle database ? What is the problem when the number connections is too high ? Too much memory comsumption ? or too many sockets opened ? or too many context switching between threads ? To be a little bit specific, how could Oracle Forms application scale to thousand of users without facing this problem ? Shall Oracle RAC applied to this case ? I'm sure the answer to this question should depend on quite a number of factors, like the exact spec of the hardware being used. I'm expecting a rough estimation or some experience from the real world.

I also tried downloading the package directly from launchpad.net and running dpkg -i on it (this had worked for a similar issue with a kernel upgrade), but to no avail. I'm not actually particularly interested in what's going on with mysql, per se (though I will need to figure it out at some time); at this point, my primary concern is that I am unable to apt-get install other packages! What to do?

• Upgrading Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 when Update Manager doesn't let you

  I've been trying to upgrade my installation of Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10, but all of the instructions I've found haven't been helping. They mostly say to run the update manager and it'll tell you that there's a new distribution ready. Well, mine doesn't say that. Things I've run or checked: update-manager -d says: Your system is up-to-date The package information was last updated less than one hour ago. I've set it to get all new distributions, not just LTS $ cat /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades [DEFAULT] # default prompting behavior, valid options: # never - never prompt for a new distribution version # normal - prompt if a new version of the distribution is available # lts - prompt only if a LTS version of the distribution is available Prompt=normal I'm definitely running 9.04 $ lsb_release -r Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 9.04 Release: 9.04 Codename: jaunty Even running the release upgrade from console doesn't help: $ sudo do-release-upgrade Checking for a new ubuntu release No new release found This is running from behind a proxy, but I've set it up such that the regular upgrades and apt-get etc doesn't complain. (export http_proxy=http://myuser:mypass@myserver:8080/) Could you think of anything else which might be stopping me from upgrading?

  Some time ago, I upgrade my FreeBSD box to 7.1-RC2, but now I'd like to move to 7.2-RELEASE. I tried running # uname -mrsi FreeBSD 7.1-RC2 i386 GENERIC # freebsd-update upgrade -r 7.2-RELEASE Looking up update.FreeBSD.org mirrors... 3 mirrors found. Adding a --debug option shows the failure as being fetch: http://update4.FreeBSD.org/7.1-RC2/i386/latest.ssl: Not Found Is there any way to still do a binary upgrade of this system as the 7.1-RC* directories don't exist on http://update.freebsd.org anymore? Upgrading from source is an option, but I wanted to see if there was some way to salvage this installation.

• Upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10 - Apache not able to start

  I updated to Ubuntu 13.10 (from Ubuntu 13.04) last weekend, and now Apache is not being able to start. It was working perfectly well until the upgraded, and I haven't changed anything myself. When I ran a restart this is what I get apache2: Syntax error on line 260 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/apache2/conf.d/: No such file or directory So, I created the directory, and then I get this: * Starting web server apache2 * * The apache2 configtest failed.   I have problems after upgrading my older Ubuntu version to Ubuntu 14.04 lts. • nvidia driver problem after update

  I know there are a lot of posts about nvdia driver, but I am not able to solve this. I updated my configuration yesterday, September 27th, and it seems that a new nvidia driver was involved. The updated completed with an error, and invited me to send a bug report automatically. I send it, but it finally said that there was no place to send the bug report to. Today I updated again, and a new kernel was there. Then I rebooted. I found a desktop in 640x480 with a horrible, unreadable font. I run jockey and tried to go back to another version of the nvidia driver, but it seems that none of the drivers listed there are suddenly valid.   When I tried to update my Ubuntu through the update manager I received an error about some unknown resource. so i tried doing it from the terminal with sudo apt-get update but all I got is: 0% [Connecting to 192.168.43.1 repeating itself... and when I press Enter it shows: W: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-security/universe/i18n/Translation-en Unable to connect to 192.168.43.1:8000: E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. How can I get this to work?

One of the announcements in the call was the Big Data Accelerator from Oracle (Seeking Alpha link here - slightly tweaked for correctness shown below):  "The big data accelerator includes some of the standard open source software, HDFS, the file system and a number of other pieces, but also some Oracle components that we think can dramatically speed up the entire map-reduce process. And will be particularly attractive to Java programmers [...]. There are some interesting applications they do, ETL is one. Log processing is another. We're going to have a lot of those features, functions and pre-built applications in our big data accelerator."  Not much else we can say right now, more on this (and Big Data in general) at Openworld!

  This article describes implementing conditional activation to taskflows.Use Case Description Suppose we have a taskflow dropped as region on a page & this region is enclosed in a popup .By default when the page is loaded the respective region also gets loaded.Hence a region model needs to provide a viewId whenever one is requested.  A consequence of this is the TaskFlowRegionModel always has to initialize its task flow and execute the task flow's default activity in order to determine a viewId, even if the region is not visible on the page.This can lead to unnecessary performance overhead of executing task flow to generate viewIds for regions that are never visible. • How to login as other in ubuntu 12.04

  i have upgraded my ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04. i could not see other login option in the login screen. it shows only Guest login and User login. The User Login ask only password and i had never entered in as User login so that i do not know about password of User login. my problem is how to login as root from the login screen? how can i get Other login option to login as root or some other user? before ask this question i have tried the following: try to add the greeter-show-manual-login=true line at the bottom of /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf file as Guest login but i get access denied error. i do not know the password of User login (ask only password while login) to purpose of adding above line. from the safe mode login, i could login as root but i could not add the above line the lightdm.conf file . i got read only error so that i tried to change the permission to 777 like the following > chmod 777 lightdm.conf (i am within the /etc/lightdm/). but i got the error the file marked as/is read only in the file system. In 11.10 version i have created 4 users. i can see that the users exist in 12.10 . so i am sure my self users are not removed while upgrate. • La nueva version de Enterprise Manager 12c, Release 4!

  El día 3 de Junio del 2014 se anuncio la nueva versión de Enterprise Manager, y en esta versión hay nuevas funcionalidades que realmente hace que uno se apasione por este producto. Aquí no voy a platicar de todas las nuevas características, pero si de unas cuantas que son las de mas interés para la Base de Datos. Gestión Avanzada de Umbrales (Advanced Threshold Management) Esta funcionalidad  lo que permite es tener una mayor flexibilidad en los umbrales de todos tus objetivos (Targets) Umbrales basados en tiempo: Auto ajusta los umbrales estáticos, basados ??en los cambios de carga de trabajo de tu ambiente de trabajo. Por ejemplo, no son las mismas cargas de trabajo que tiene tu ambiente los fines de semana a comparación en un cierre de mes. Umbrales adaptativos: Umbrales que se calculan automáticamente para alertar si tu objetivo, ya sea una BD o un Exadata  se desvía del comportamiento esperado de su ambiente normal de trabajo. Interfaz para el seguimiento de tus tareas programadas Anteriormente si tenias varias tareas programadas, tenias que entrar a cada uno de tus targets para verificar como iba progresando, ahora en esta nueva versión, existe una nueva interfaz en la que te podrá permitir ver todas las tareas programadas que tienes en tu ambiente, reduciendo el numero de clicks para poder llegar a esta. De igual manera, se introduce la capacidad de poder exportar e importar tus tareas programadas a través de emcli emcli export_jobs  emcli import_jobs   Almacén de AWR (AWR Warehouse) En esta nueva versión se introdujo un almacén de los snapshots de AWR, este almacén o repositorio por default tiene una retención infinita, significando, que nunca va a borrar los snapshots de AWR.  Este repositorio puede ser una BD en  11.2.0.4 + el ultimo PSU o una version mas nueva. Aquí, vamos a poder ver la compresión que se efectúa sobre los segmentos "en-memoria". De la misma manera vamos a tener un tutor o advisor, que nos va a poder guiar en nuestro proceso de decisión para ver que segmentos podemos definir en nuestra "in-memory store" .
