  • Choosing the right version control system for .NET projects [closed]

    I'm getting ready for my first "bigger" .NET project (ASP.NET MVC 3/4) on which I'm going to lead another 2 programmers and right now I'm choosing the right version control system for the job (plus I'm gonna use it for my future development too). My problem is that I did't use any version control system before, so I would like it to have as fast learning curve and intuitive merging as possible. So far I quickly looked at VisualSVN (I like the Visual Studio integration in it), but I'm reading everywhere how Git is awesome and dunno which one to choose (not limited to these two).. Maybe I'm ovethinking this but I like when everything goes smoothly:) I'd like to hear some opinions from people who used multiple version control systems (preferably on VS projects) what do you think is the less complicated and effective version control system for such a use (one to 5 man projects)?

  • BDD in a .NET environment

    I've seen BDD in action (in this case using SpecFlow and Selenium in a .NET environment) for a small test project. I was very impressed - mainly due to the fact that the language used to specify the acceptance tests meant they engaged with the product owner much more easily. I'm now keen to bring this into my current organisation. However I'm asked 'who else uses this?' and 'show me some case-studies'. Unfortunately I cannot find any 'big names' (or even 'small names' for that matter!) of companies who are actively using BDD. I have two questions really: Is BDD adopted by companies out there? Who are they? How can BDD be implemented in an agile .NET environment and are there any significant drawbacks to doing it?

    I have been trying to find a neat tutorial, guide or step by step instructions for deploying an Asp.net MVC3 webapp but have found nothing so far. Everyone talks about his version of the stroy and different type of MVC versions. Right now, I have build a simple Asp.net MVC web application which i need to deploy on my shared hosting account. In a very simple manner, I need to know which files should i copy. Do i upload everything in my webproject directory to the server including the controller directory, views, models, content and bin directory ?. What about the Global.asax, web.config, packages.config, myapp.publish.xml. In short, I have no idea which files should be uploaded and which should be not. I am sure of one thing that i need few(MVC and Razor dlls) following dlls in bin directory. Just treat me as someone who has never deployed any website NOTE:- I don't have VS SP1 installed and it doesn't install either. Basically i need a manual procedure.

    I am attempting to modify an application with the following characteristics: Written in C#.net Using Visual Studio 2010 The application uses a Master sheet to maintain commonality The Master sheet has the following: <%@ Master Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="mysheet.master.cs" Inherits="master_mysheet" %> Now, currently, the master sheet has an include file that brings in a common footer: #include file="inc/my-footer.inc" Here's what I want to do: I would like to modify the master sheet to be able to read in a footer based on the value contained in a session variable... i.e. (not real code, but just something to give an idea of what I want) if session("x") = "a" then #include file="inc/my-footer1.inc" else #include file="inc/my-footer2.inc" My first instinct was to go with some vbscript: <script type="text/vbscript" language="vbscript"> document.write("vbscript example.") </script> However, it doesn't run the vbscript code automatically on page load.   • WCF net.tcp windows service - call duration and calls outstanding increases over time

    I have a windows service which uses the ServiceHost class to host a WCF Service using the net.tcp binding. I have done some tweaking to the config to throttle sessions as well as number of connections, but it seems that every once in a while my "Calls outstanding" and "Call duration" shoot up and stay up in perfmon. It seems to me I have a leak somewhere, but the code I have is all fairly minimal, I'm relying on ServiceHost to handle the details. I'm only getting about ~150 clients so I don't think I'm coming up against my "300" limit. "Calls per second" stays constant at anywhere from 2-5 calls per second. The service will run for hours and hours with 0-2 "calls outstanding" and very low "call duration" and then eventually it will shoot up to 30 calls oustanding and 20s call duration. Any tips on what might be causing my "calls outstanding" and "call duration" to spike? Where am I leaking? Point me in the right direction?

  • How to fine tune a Membership Provider?

    After all the answers to my last question about fine-tuning turned out to be more useful than I expected, I thought that I would ask another similar Question about the MembershipProviders as well. Okay, so firstly, to clarify: I know what a Membership, Role, and Profile provider is, how to implement my own, and how to configure them, and most of the things about them. Implementing a role and profile provider is pretty straightforward, because they only require simple CRUD most of the time. (A single line of LINQ is enough for about half of the RoleProvider's methods.) However, the Membership provider is a differend beast. Many of you may realize that it violates the SR (Single Responsibility) principle, because it has to do EVERYTHING related to user management. While this leaves a lot of room for customizations, it has its downsides as well. There is no information on the Internet about what their EXACT expected behaviour is, such as when should they throw exceptions or simply return null, and stuff like that. I use this sample implementation for reference, but it also contains several contradictions. For example, it uses its own ValidateUser method for checking for credentials in the ChangePassword method. But the ValidateUser also updates the user's LastLoginDate to the current date. So, does the framework expect that I set it in my own provider as well, or is it simply a mistake in the sample? The other is: the ChangePassword method throws an exception every time when validating the new password, but CreateUser doesn't ever throw an exception, it simply returns false. And last, but not least: it counts the invalid password attempts of the user and locks them if it passes a threshold. While this is good, but it requires manual action to unlock the users. Is it a problem if my provider automatically unlocks the user after a certain amount of time? (EDIT) I almost forgot: the CreateUser method in the sample inserts the ID from the method parameter. I actually think this is bad practice, because I use inters with auto incement as IDs, so inserting them from some method parameter is not an option. Should I just ignore the parameter, or require that its value is null and throw an exception if it isn't? All in all, does ASP.NET have any assumptions about the behaviour of a MembershipProvider? Is there any documentation which describes when should I throw an exception or just return null? I also tried to find a set of generic unit tests which would provide some guidance about the expected behaviour, but no luck, I found plenty of articles about "Unit testing is good", and "How to unit test a MembershipProvider", but not one where there would be any actual tests.   • OWA, Outlook Anywhere, RPCPing Inconsistencies

    I'm troubleshooting an Outlook Anywhere issue with a new Exchange 2010 server. The server in question, MS2010, is behind a SonicWALL NSA 2400 device and works wonderfully except for Outlook Anywhere. Outlook Anywhere works internally and I've verified (through Ctrl-Right Click --> Connection Status) that I'm able to connect to MS2010 over HTTPS. When trying to connect to the server using HTTPS from outside the firewall, I'm unable to do so. A Wireshark trace shows 30 or so successful HTTPS packet transmissions, and then it fails with 3 straight transmissions to a destination port of 135. I have no idea why my computer is attempting to access anything on port 135 since I've setup my profile to use HTTPS on both slow and fast connections. I'm 99% certain that the firewall is configured correctly. I run Outlook Web Access (also HTTPS) on the same server and there are no issues with access. EDIT: My Autodiscover settings are correct (as far as I can tell). My server passes the Outlook Anywhere and Autodiscover tests at https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com/.   • How to bind dropdownlist data to complex class?

    Hi I am using asp.net mvc 2.0(default binding model) and I have this problem. I have a strongly typed view that has a dropdownlist <%= Html.DropDownList("List", "-----")%> Now I have a model class like Public class Test() { public List { get; set; } public string Selected {get; set;} } Now I have in my controller this public ActionResult TestAction() { Test ViewModel = new Test(); ViewModel.List = new SelectList(GetList(), "value", "text", "selected"); return View(Test); } [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult TestAction(Test ViewModel) { return View(); } Now when I load up the TestAction page for the first time it populates the dropdown list as expected. Now I want to post the selected value back to the server(the dropdownlist is within a form tag with some other textboxes). So I am trying to bind it automatically when it comes in as seen (Test ViewModel) However I get this big nasty error. Server Error in '/' Application.   • Problems migrating databinding in VB.NET from Winforms to ASP.NET 2.0

    And this was supposed to be so easy... I have existing business and data access layers that handle the retrieval and update of the data in question. These work great with the existing Winforms application (.Net V2.0) Now, in trying to write a new web-based UI, I'm running into all sorts of problems (last time I wrote asp.net code was in 1.1). Specifically, I can't data bind a text box to a business object. Oh, sure there's the ObjectDataSource but that wants to know how to do CRUD operations on the data. What I'm looking for is something that acts like the 'classic' binding objects so that, in my code, it's as simple as retrieving the object and doing a a refresh. The data component like FormView and DetailsView are so generic-looking that it's ridiculous. The existing application would have tabbed dialogs, text boxes grouped by panels, etc. On top of that, I have a directive to use master pages and unless one control causes it, I can't seem to get the content section to expand. I can't just put a text box 'below' the bottom of "Content1" and have it resize the content section - which gives me the same results as an earlier question I posted when the footer wasn't being 'pushed down' - relative position solved that but doesn't seem to solve it with placing small text boxes in the area. What I want is fairly simple. Something like: bindingobject.datasource = businessdataobject bindingobject.refresh ...and have the text boxes refresh with the new values. Likewise to have 'businessdataobject' properties updated as the user enters new data. I was able to do this with the GridView (grdRequests.DataSource = lstRequests) by making a list of asp:BoundField tags inside the collection of the GridView. Am I tilting at windmills here?

The problem is whenever we attempt to work with columns in a list (add or update) we get the following error: Culture ID 1164 (0x048C) is not a supported culture. Parameter name: culture This error happen on existing lists as well as newly created lists. Any assistance is appreciated.

  • Compile Delphi component package (bpl) for different Delphi versions

    Hello. The situation is the following. Typically I use RAD Studio 2010 for Delphi development. I have some components I would like to redistribute in binary form (*.bpl without source). But I would like people to be able to use them despite of their Delphi version. But, for example, dcu files can be used only by compiler version, which generated them. Almost the same situation is with bpl files as I know. Every bpl file will require corresponding VCLXX.bpl library depending on Delphi version. How do I make my bpls, compiled in 2010 to be able to be used in Delphi7, 2007 etc? Is the only solution to have ALL Delphi versions installed and compile bpl files separately in each?

  • VS 2010 debugger not loading symbols when attaching to NUnit

    (I just posted this in the NUnit discussion group on groups.google.com) Under VS 2008, I would run my tests under NUnit, and, if I needed to debug, I would attach the VS2008 debugger to the running Nunit process (Debug - Attach to Process), and set any breakpoints on code I wanted to examine. When I hit the Run buttion in NUnit, it would hit the breakpoint. (BTW, if it matters, this was running NUnit 2.5.2). I just upgraded to NUnit 2.5.4 and VS 2010. When I set a breakpoint, then attach to NUnit, I get a little warning symbol on the breakpoint dot, and hovering over it gives the tooltip "Breakpoint will not be hit. No symbols are currently loaded". Going to the Debug - Windows - Modules window shows a whole bunch of Windows and NUnit modules loaded, with the Symbol Status of "Skipped loading symbols", and then 1 module with a funny name that changes each time (r1euhmh5 right now), and Symbol Status of "No symbols loaded". (There is no trace of a module with a name remotely like my DLL under test). Right clicking the funny filename (assuming that to be some mapping from my DLL under test), and clicking Load Symbols From - Symbol Path, and navigating to the bin\debug folder, then clicking the pdb file of my DLL under test, I get the message "A matching symbol was not found in this folder". (The top of the Open dialog box has a line that says "Original location: r1euhmh5.pdb") So what's changed? And how do I go about debugging/breakpointing under VS 2010/NUnit 2.5.4 (Or is it possible I screwed something up when I decided to go through my VS2010 options and set some of them to more advanced levels than I knew what I was doing?) I appreciate any help.

    Hi, Just starting with ASP.Net MVC and have hit a bit of a snag regarding validation messages. I've a custom validation attribute assigned to my class validate several properties on my model. When this validation fails, we'd like the error message to contain XHTML mark-up, including a link to help page, (this was done in the original WebForms project as a ASP:Panel). At the moment the XHTML tags such as "< a ", in the ErrorMessage are being rendered to the screen. Is there any way to get the ValidationSummary to render the XHTML markup correctly? Or is there a better way to handle this kind of validation? Thanks

    I was looking for a way to route http://www.example.com/WebService.asmx to http://www.example.com/service/ using only the ASP.NET 3.5 Routing framework without needing to configure the IIS server. Until now I have done what most tutorials told me, added a reference to the routing assembly, configured stuff in the web.config, added this to the Global.asax: protected void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) { RouteCollection routes = RouteTable.Routes; routes.Add( "WebService", new Route("service/{*Action}", new WebServiceRouteHandler()) ); } ...created this class: public class WebServiceRouteHandler : IRouteHandler { public IHttpHandler GetHttpHandler(RequestContext requestContext) { // What now? } } ...and the problem is right there, I don't know what to do. The tutorials and guides I've read use routing for pages, not webservices. Is this even possible? Ps: The route handler is working, I can visit /service/ and it throws the NotImplementedException I left in the GetHttpHandler method.

    What is the correct way to find the absolute path to the App_Data folder from a Controller in an ASP.NET MVC project? I'd like to be able to temporarily work with an .xml file and I don't want to hardcode the path. This does not work: [HandleError] public class HomeController : Controller { public ActionResult Index() { string path = VirtualPathUtility.ToAbsolute("~/App_Data/somedata.xml"); //.... do whatever return View(); } } I think outside of the web context VirtualPathUtility.ToAbsolute() doesn't work. string path comes back as "C:\App_Data\somedata.xml" Where should I determine the path of the .xml file in an MVC app? global.asax and stick it an application-level variable?

    After uinstalling VS2012 and installing back Visual Studio 2010 C# Express I was getting strane warning: 2008 is not a valid number so I decided to reinstall VS2010, but I couldn't uinstall it. I was getting error: Suite Integration Toolkit Executable has stopped working. I managed to uinstall VS2010 with VS2010 Uinstall Tool, but now I want to install Visual Studio 2010 C# Express back. I'm getting Suite Integration Toolkit[...] error again when I try to install it using web installer. Could you help me resolve my problem? And I've got Tablet PC Components function disabled in Control Panel / Programs and Utilites.
