  • How to make `rm` faster on ext3/linux?

    I have ext3 filesystem mounted with default options. On it I have some ~ 100GB files. Removal of any of such files takes long time (8 minutes) and causes a lot of io traffic, which increases load on server. Is there any way to make the rm not as disruptive?

For this i found the free limited version of "Microsoft Expression Encoder Screen Capture" which I want to automate. Is there a separate command line interface for Microsoft Expression Encoder Screen Capture or do I have to use the command line interface for Expression Studio?   • tomcat 6 start mode setting for production [windows]

    Tomcat 6 (as a windows service) seems to have a 'Start Mode' with options of 'java, jvm or exe' which can be set via the Tomcat Monitor (system tray icon). if I set this to 'java', I can see a forked 'java.exe' process for tomcat, if I chose either of the other two, I dont see a separate process. Anyway, would like to know if anyone has any information about what these settings mean and which one would be most appropriate in production.

  • Instant MSI deployment via GPO

    Is it possible to instantly deploy a certain piece of software by creating a GPO in Active Directory? I realize it's possible to do this but only after rebooting the computer, and that is something we don't always want to do, especially since some of the software I want to deploy on servers. What are the options? One thing to note is that most of our users do NOT have admin rights as I am talking not only about servers but also about workstations in the classrooms.

    I just heard about policyd-weight so I did an apt-cache search policyd which returns three options: policyd-weight postfix-policyd postfwd Which one is the best, and do you have any tips on setting them up? Our current setup is whitelister plus postgrey to greylist RBLd hosts, then fail2ban them for 10 minutes if they have 10 failures, followed by content filtering (Kaspersky Anti-Spam). The content filtering is pretty good, but there's still a lot of spam that gets through the RBL greylisting.

  • After adding a SSD to my MacBook, the HD never spins down.

    I added a SSD to my MacBook Pro 17 as the primary drive attached to the SATA controller. I moved the HD to the optical bay using the OptiBay from MCE Technologies which I use for my home directory. The problem I have encountered is the HD seems to never stop spinning. I have modified the sleep settings, hoping one of the various options would solve my problem without success. Any suggestions for me?

    I am having problems with the refresh rate if the screen . In the the refresh mode of the monitor in the monitor options have only one option 60Hz. I have LG 24 + ATI Radon 3870, and have already installed the ATI driver via Ubuntu download center. Any idea how I solve that one? Thanks.

    I have a multi purpose server running ArchLinux that currently serves multiple virtual hosts from /var/www/domains/EXAMPLE.COM/html /var/www/domains/EXAMPLE2.COM/html I deploy those websites (mostly using Kohana framework) using a Jenkins job by checking out the project, removes the .git folder and ssh-copy the tar.gz to /var/www/domains/ on the server and untars it. Since I don't want to have to re-install phpMyAdmin after each deploy, I decided to use an alias. I would like the alias to be something like /.tools/phpMyAdmin/ so I could have more "tools" later if I wanted to.   • Duplicate free/busy or full calendar information between two exchange servers

    We have acquired a new entity with their own AD/Exchange environment. Until they fully join our domain, we need to sync their exchange calendars or minimally free/busy for users. All users in the acquisition have a new account in our organization. We have considered a number of options including CalDAV, but nothing seems to meet our needs. Even a client solutions to update the NEW server with the free/busy would be workable.

  • Celery - minimize memory consuption

    We have ~300 celeryd processes running under Ubuntu 10.4 64-bit , in idle every process takes ~19mb RES, ~174mb VIRT, thus - it's around 6GB of RAM in idle for all processes. In active state - process takes up to 100mb of RES and ~300mb VIRT Every process uses minidom(xml files are < 500kb, simple structure) and urllib. Quetions is - how can we decrease RAM consuption - at least for idle workers, probably some celery or python options may help? How to determine which part takes most of memory?

There's no clear way to add Google from this screen and when I clicked: Find more search providers..., you get taken to IE Gallery where Google isn't even listed.   • hosts file for ip address

    I would like to map ip address to specific localhost interfaces (e.g. 23.45.66.77 = 127.0.3.3). For named hosts I can use the hosts file. Naturally this doesn't work for IP address. This has to work in windows, the only option I've found so far is implementing a TAP/TUN driver like openvpn does. Are there any other options?
