• Any recommendations for a domain buying negotiating service? [closed]

  The best domain for my niche and related is owned by a guy in San Fransisco, and I want to buy the domain from him but I don't want to deal with him directly (even though he has contacted me in the past). I need to find an intermediary company that can handle the negotiation for me. I don't expect to have to pay much since the guy has been squatting on it for more than 15 years and according to the Internet Wayback Machine it has never actually been used for anything at all - he has never added any value to it. It kind of irritates me that such a good domain has been sitting in this guy's closet gather dust for 15 years. I know that GoDaddy has a domain buying negotiating service (and the domain is registered through them, which may make it easier), but I really, really do not want to do business with GoDaddy if I don't have too. Do any of you know of other firms that deal with this sort of thing?

• Is an in-app purchase required to unlock game in order to bypass pirating acceptable?

  I'm considering writing a mobile game and looking at distribution. The game will have a server requirement, which means I will have to pay for bandwidth, hosting, processor time, etc. Because of that I'll need to make at least a little money off this thing. According to the press piracy is rampant in the android community. To get around this, I'm thinking of implementing a simple model where the game is free, perhaps allowing play for X number of turns or something, and then requiring an in-app purchase to continue to play. I would clearly explain this in the app description, and the in-app purchase would be managed per account so it would be linked to your google play account so you wouldn't have to re-purchase every time you get a new device. Would gamers accept this model or see it as unreasonable?

• reasonably priced registrar for obscure tlds like .tt

  I'm looking to buy a .tt domain name, however the only registrars I can find want from between $500 to $3000 for one domain. Considering I can buy a .com for around $10 a year, I consider that not very reasonable! It's going to be for a personal blog site (non monetised), hence why I'm not willing to spend over $500 a year on it. Does anyone know of any registrars that sell obscure tld's such as .tt for reasonable price? As for my definition of "reasonable", I understand it's not a .com and I'm going to have to pay more, but $3000 is just silly! In my opinion I'd say anything under $100 is reasonable.

  It appears that there are ways to make money with flash games through portal and aggregator sites and embedded ads. But I do my programming in C and C++. I've started a prototype which relies on a few existing C++ SDK's. The game would have to be downloadable. Is this just a labor of love, or are there any ways to make money from this type of game? Does anyone pay for shareware anymore? What other options are there?

• Continuing Education as a Part of Your Job [closed]

  I work as a programmer for a mid-sized company (about 500 employees) in the medical industry. Before that I worked at a custom software development/consulting company. At both companies programmers were never officially given time to continue their education through taking classes, reading books or blogs, or doing research relevant to the job. At the software development company we were offered some money to pay for a class, but not offered any time off of work to take the class. I have been wondering, do most employers of programmers give time off of work to take a class, read a book, or do job related research? By time off of work I just mean some period of time where you can stop development; it does not have to mean leaving the office. I would be grateful to hear about everyone's experience with this.

• Where is a good place to learn how to develop games?

  I'm brazilian and I want to learn how to develop a game in some college or something like that, but I don't know any place here to learn it. Here is not that good either to develop games, as we don't have many companies to do that. So, I was thinking about working in some place else, while I study it. What I really want to know is, a good place to learn, and a country that developers are well payed to be able to pay my course and still have money to do something else. I'm a Java programmer, still learning a lot, but I want to do it later. A few years from now.

• USB internet not accessible

  I'm brand new to ubuntu and linux. We access internet from a usb stick issued by a local telephone company. When I plug the stick into the computer, I see the device listed under internet connections as a mobile broadband device but it is grayed out and inaccessible. I tried to create a new mobile broadband connection but my country (Gabon) is not listed and we have no payment plans per se (we pay from a pre-paid card system).. Any clues as to how I can get the system to recognize the internet connection? Thanks for any help...

• Is it viable to become a contract programmer straight out of college?

  I have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and four months research experience designing and implementing a research project. I realize this is highly dependent on my skill set - which includes C, C++, Java, Python, and SQL. I feel I have an advantage in two ways: I am young and am not afraid to work overtime. I am willing to take lower pay to gather a client base/experience, and work nights/weekends to get a few projects under my belt. This may be cliche, but I feel that I can learn new technologies quicker than most. At the very least, I am not a slow study. With this being said, is it viable for me to become a contract programmer? Or do I need the 10+ year skill set that most contractors bring to the table?

• Prevent product key from being used on multiple virtual machines

  I have a software product. it will probably run on VMs that have no network connection at all. I want the user to pay for each VM the user runs. I thought to ask the user for some kind of hardware ID and provide him with serial that is unique for his machine. But user can just copy the VM image and than have two machines running? So I thought of having a security dongle. But how can I prevent user from running two VM's on the same machine both connected to the same dongle? This should be only basic defense so that actual hacking will be required to breach the license and not only spinning one more VM.

• Recomendation for Webshop with API

  I'm searching for a webshop. The problem with my search is, that the webshop-software of my choice needs to have a useabel API or some interface for external applications. E.g. i need to place orders by an external application or need to get product descriptions or warehouse stock from the external application. I somehow would like to have a webshop wehere the webinterface is just one way to interact with the whole system. There are some other requirments, which have to be fullfilled, but i guess they are kind of common: running on linux MySQL (we already have MySQL-replication and backup in place) i like open source but i'm willing to pay for it, if it's worth it I found some webshops on the net - but perhaps you can tell me, if theres any hope for a webshop with a good API before i go and test all of them, on the first look i didn't find any docs about any interface to external applications for any of my search results. • IP fail-over address. Do i need it?

  I received an email from my web hosting provider where i have 2 dedicated servers saying that from now on I have to pay for my IP fail-over addresses. The server we have hosts a tool used internally by our company. Traffic to it is quite low. No more than 3 people will use it at the same time. If something happens we can wait a day to have the tool up and running again. Is it worth having these fail-over addresses? thanks

  I was wondering if there is anyway you can block or exclude people from submitting multiple fake ip's online . For example I have a google pay-per-click campaign set up on adwords. I downloaded a program in minutes which enabled me to hide or give out a fake ip address which also allows you to use a different ip each time. I tried this out on my own link on google which in turn got through adwords and I was charged for the click. My question is how would you be able to counter or block someone who continuosly clicks on your link with a different fake ip each time?

I press the button to start the pc and then i see the bios start but after that i get a black screen and nothing is happening. i can't even re install windows 7 or choose between windows 7 and linux .   In Ubuntu 12.10 USB-modem Huawei 171 from MTS is not connected to the network. First on the message "Are you registered on the network", immediately after that, "You are disconnected from the network." This happened after there was an internal error notification Ubuntu. I did not pay attention, and closed by sending the report. After the reboot does not work. Settings are not changed. I am online with this modem in Windows 8. • Can a table be both Fact and Dimension

  Ok, I am a newbie and don't really think "dimensionally" yet, I have most of my initial schema roughed out but I keep flipping back and forth on one table. I have a Contract table and it has a quantity column (tonnes), and a net price column, which need to be summed up a bunch of different ways, and the contract has lots of foreign keys (producer, commodity, futures month etc.) and dates so it appears to be a fact table. Also the contract is never updated, if that makes a difference. However, we create cash tickets which we use to pay out part or all of the contract and they have a contract ID on them so then the contract looks like a dimension in the cash ticket's star schema. Is this a problem? Any ideas on the process to resolve this, because people don't seem to like the idea of joining two fact tables. Should I put producerId and commodityId on the cash ticket? It would seem really weird not to have a contractID on it.

  I am bit confusing about my goals although whole motivation thing is $$$ but still there is something pushing me to pursue higher studies(being frustrated from boot-licking attitudes of peers and lottery system here in India for promotions,pay hikes and onshore opportunities).   I am not satisfied with what I learned in Java 101 in University. I feel like, lot of time is spent on trying to figure out how to write something in Java properly. I feel like, my lack of knowledge of Java and eclipse is slowing me down. I would like to pay for a detailed and intensive course in Java & Eclipse. I can read a book and read tutorials, but it seems harder to discipline myself. Where can I find such crash courses outside of university courses? I find lot of CS courses just show tip of the iceberg and not too much focused on actual application. I want to learn the latest industry skills and etc. I live in BC, Canada. I am thinking of BCIT, but not sure what they offer.

• Why would i need extra IP adresses from my web host?

  I am moving to a new and cheaper host. My old one raised the prices suddenly by a factor 10. Now what I did not like about the old one, was that each time I set up a new website, I had to set up a new account, with the result that I have to pay for a lot of webspace and a lot of bandwith i don't use. Now I am moving over to a new host, who cheaply offers virtual servers. Now I am a n00b when it comes to server tech. I have two questions about this: 1. Could I install all my webistes on this virtual server, provided it is big enough? 2. They offer the possibility of getting more than one IP address, but it costs more. What would be the advantage of this? Would I be able to suffice with one IP address?
