  • Perform tasks with delay, without delaying web response (ASP.NET)

    I'm working on a feature that needs to send two text messages with a 30 second delay, and it is crucial that both text messages are sent. Currently, this feature is built with ajax requests, that are sent with a 30 second javascript delay, but since this requires the user to have his browser open and left on the same page for at least 30 seconds, it is not a method I like. Instead, I have tried to solve this with threading. This is what I've done: Public Shared Sub Larma() Dim thread As New System.Threading.Thread(AddressOf Larma_Thread) thread.Start() End Sub Private Shared Sub Larma_Thread() StartaLarm() Thread.Sleep(1000 * 30) StoppaLarm() End Sub A web handler calls Larma(), and StartaLarm() and StoppaLarm() are the methods that send the first and second text messages respectively. However, I only get the first text message delivered - the second is never sent. Am I doing something wrong here? I have no deep understanding of how threading works in ASP.NET, so please let me know how to accomplish this.

Right now I have several overloads that add events to different types of controls: Public Sub AddEventHandler(Button, ButtonEvent) 'adds event handling for Button.Click public Sub AddEventHandler(LinkButton, ButtonEvent)'adds event handling for LinkButton.Click The problem is I want to write a function that is more robust like: Public sub AddEventHandler(Control, EventToHandle, ControlEvent) where EventToHandle is the parameter representing Button.Click or whatever event that Button has associated with it. PS, I know I can use a for loop to loop though the lines then count up the lines that way, but I was hoping for a simpler solution like wc

  • In ruby on rails, is it possible to do a sum query with group by using the find_each batching?

    I'm loading data from my database and I'm doing a sum calculation with a group by. ElectricityReading.sum(:electricity_value, :group => "electricity_timestamp", :having => ["electricity_timestamp = '2010-02-14 23:30:00'"]) My data sets are extremely large, 100k upwards so I was wondering if its possible to use the find_each to batch this to help with memory overhead. I can write the batching manually use limit and offset I guess but I'd like to avoid that if the code already exists.

    I need to periodically update a local cache with new additions to some DB table. The table rows contain an auto-increment sequential number (SN) field. The cache keeps this number too, so basically I just need to fetch all rows with SN larger than the highest I already have. SELECT * FROM table where SN > <max_cached_SN> However, the majority of the attempts will bring no data (I just need to make sure that I have an absolutely up-to-date local copy). So I wander if this will be more efficient: count = SELECT count(*) from table; if (count > <cache_size>) // fetch new rows as above I suppose that selecting by an indexed numeric field is quite efficient, so I wander whether using count has benefit. On the other hand, this test/update will be done quite frequently and by many clients, so there is a motivation to optimize it.

But the first step of selecting the entire line is not working:- F5:: send {Shift Home} return I have tried few others too, but its not working. This is not sending Shift+Home combination on pressing F5 key. Please tell me what's wrong with this? Also if possible, what to do next?, as if I will write send {F5} I believe, it will recursively fire this script again and again..

I have two parameters one being the ID and another being the row number (as you can select which row you want from the GUI) this part of the code works fine, this returns one column of a single row.     I'm having a (design) problem: I'm building an interpreter and I need some storage for variables. There are basically two types of content a variable here can have: string or int. I'm using a simple class for the variables, all variables are then stored in a vector. However, as a variable can hold a number or a string, I don't want C++ to allocate both and consume memory for no reason. That's why I wanted to use unions: union { string StringValue; int IntValue; } However, strings don't work with unions. Is there any workaround so no memory gets eaten for no reason?

    I have looked into the binaries produced by MSVC 2010 from my source code, and saw everything being filled with "junk". I don't know how to explain, but my executables are being added too much unnecessary information, like: Lots of Microsoft default error messages, I don't want them XML schema settings (Why!?) Other things not important for the execution of the main program How can I stop MSVC doing this? Do I have to switch to GCC? In all other programs (written in C++ too, from Word processors to games), this junk simply doesn't exist.
