• Where is the SQL Azure Development Environment

  Recently I posted an entry explaining that you can develop in Windows Azure without having to connect to the main service on the Internet, using the Software Development Kit (SDK) which installs two emulators - one for compute and the other for storage. That brought up the question of the same kind of thing for SQL Azure. The short answer is that there isn’t one. While we’ll make the development experience for all versions of SQL Server, including SQL Azure more easy to write against, you can simply treat it as another edition of SQL Server. For instance, many of us use the SQL Server Developer Edition - which in versions up to 2008 is actually the Enterprise Edition - to develop our code. We might write that code against all kinds of environments, from SQL Express through Enterprise Edition. We know which features work on a certain edition, what T-SQL it supports and so on, and develop accordingly. We then test on the actual platform to ensure the code runs as expected. You can simply fold SQL Azure into that same development process. When you’re ready to deploy, if you’re using SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 or higher, you can script out the database when you’re done as a SQL Azure script (with change notifications where needed) by selecting the right “Engine Type” on the scripting panel: (Thanks to David Robinson for pointing this out and my co-worker Rick Shahid for the screen-shot - saved me firing up a VM this morning!) Will all this change? Will SSMS, “Data Dude” and other tools change to include SQL Azure? Well, I don’t have a specific roadmap for those tools, but we’re making big investments on Windows Azure and SQL Azure, so I can say that as time goes on, it will get easier. For now, make sure you know what features are and are not included in SQL Azure, and what T-SQL is supported. • ASP.NET Connections Spring 2012 Talks and Code

  Thank you everyone who attended my ASP.NET Connections talks last week in Las Vegas. I’ve attached the slides and code for the three talks that I delivered:   Using jQuery to interact with the Server through Ajax – In this talk, I discuss the different ways to communicate information between browser and server using Ajax. I explain the difference between the different types of Ajax calls that you can make with jQuery. I also discuss the differences between the JavaScriptSerializer, the DataContractJsonSerializer, and the JSON.NET serializer.   ASP.NET Validation In-Depth – In this talk, I distinguish between View Model Validation and Domain Model Validation. I demonstrate how you can use the validation attributes (including the new .NET 4.5 validation attributes), the jQuery Validation library, and the HTML5 input validation attributes to perform View Model Validation. I then demonstrate how you can use the IValidatableObject interface with the Entity Framework to perform Domain Model Validation.   Using the MVVM Pattern with JavaScript Views – In this talk, I discuss how you can create single page applications (SPA) by taking advantage of the open-source KnockoutJS library and the ASP.NET Web API.   Be warned that the sample code is contained in Visual Studio 11 Beta projects. If you don’t have this version of Visual Studio, then you will need to open the code samples in Notepad. Also, I apologize for getting the code for these talks posted so slowly. I’ve been down with a nasty case of the flu for the past week and haven’t been able to get to a computer.

• Couldn't make Angry birds to work on wine

  I could run Notepad++ easily but I fail to run the Angry bird exe. Whenever I open the exe, I see one of my screen flickrs a bit (as lines and not the whole screen) and nothing happens. Any ideas? • VSDB to SSDT part 3 : command-line deployment with SqlPackage.exe, replacement for Vsdbcmd.exe

  For our continuous integration needs, we use a powershell script to handle deployment. A simpler approach would be to have a deployment task embedded within the build process. See the solution provided here by Jakob Ehn (a most interesting read which also dives into the '”deploying from Visual Studio” specifics) : http://geekswithblogs.net/jakob/archive/2012/04/25/deploying-ssdt-projects-with-tfs-build.aspx   For our needs, though, clearly separating our build phase from our deployment phase is important. It allows us to instantly deploy old versions. Also it is more convenient for continuous integration. So we stick with the powershell script approach. With VSDB projects, that script used to call the following command (the vsdbcmd executable was locally available, along with needed libraries): vsdbcmd.exe /a:Deploy /dd /cs:<CONNECTIONSTRING TO TARGET DB> /dsp:SQL /manifest:< PATH TO .deploymanifest FILE>   To be able to do the approximately same thing with a SSDT produced file (dacpac), you would call this command on a machine which has VS2012 installed (or the SSDT installed, see here : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh500335%28v=vs.103%29):   C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin\SqlPackage.exe /Action:Publish /SourceFile:<PATH TO Database.dacpac FILE> /Profile:<PATH TO .publish.xml FILE>   And from within a powershell script :   & "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin\SqlPackage.exe" /Action:Publish /SourceFile:<PATH TO Database.dacpac FILE> /Profile:<PATH TO .publish.xml FILE>   The command will consume a publish.xml file where the connection string and the deployment options are specified. You must be familiar with it if you have done some deployments from visual studio. • xampp mysql and rubby

  I've installed ruby and xampp server. now i am trying to use xampp mysql for ruby application. i copied xampp mysql lib (libmysql) from C:\xampp\mysql\lib to C:\Ruby192\bin (as told on some post on this forum). now after that when i try to create a resource using following command, i get an error. command: rails generate scaffold ShortUrl url:string error: C:/Ruby192/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/mysql2-0.3.11-x86-mingw32/lib/mysql2/mysql2.rb:2:in `require': Incorrect MySQL client library version! This gem was compiled for 6.0.0 but the client library is 5.5.16. (RuntimeError) i know that there is version issue b/w ruby mysql client and xampp mysal. now i need advice that what is better solution? upgraded xampp mysql or downgrade ruby mysql version. Personally i want to upgrade xampp mysql but i read on some post that xampp mysql can't be upgraded. please advise.

  I need to start using GIT for my projects from now on and I need to use some UNIX commands. but no matter what I do, I always receive "command not found" error. I installed MacPorts, but still cant run any UNIX command :/ When I try ls, I get the error below, same for sudo, or any other command: -bash: ls: command not found and when I try $PATH, I get the lines below: hakan-yilmaz-MacBook-Pro:~ hakanyilmaz$ **$PATH** -bash: /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin:/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/bin:/opt/subversion/bin/:PATH: No such file or directory I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.6 I spent 2-3 days and kept googling and trying everything I found at forums, but no success. • Why have my Aperture referenced files disappeared without trace?

  I have an Aperture library that I've been using for several years. In the past week a number of recent photos and movies have mysteriously disappeared. The missing files were all safely imported within the last week (I had reviewed some of the movies within Aperture, so know this to be true). The files were all referenced on an external drive. Within Aperture the files now have a "referenced file can't be found" icon. I've tried searching for the missing files manually, including within the Aperture library package, but they cannot be found anywhere. How can I (a) work out where the missing files have gone, and (b) identify the cause and ensure it doesn't happen again? I'm using Aperture 3.3.2.

So i don't understand the error above.

  One of our favorite sites for discovering new music is Amie Street. Today we take a look at the Amie Street app for Boxee that allows you to access your favorite tunes from the Boxee interface. Amie Street is a cool site that allows you to discover a lot of cool music from independent artists. What makes Amie Street unique is that most of the music starts out free, then the price goes up incrementally as its popularity grows. The Amie Street App for Boxee let’s you access music and playlists you’ve created on the site, with more features are on the way. For this example we’re using the mouse and keyboard, but of course you can also get to each section using your remote if you have one. Or you can turn your iPod touch into a Boxee remote too. Amie Street in Boxee To access the Amie Street app, launch Boxee and click on Apps from the main menu. Under the Search Sidebar type in Amie Street and select it from the results field.   Then you can add it to the My Apps section…and double-click on the icon. Click on Start to begin using it. You’ll be be presented with a Welcome screen where you can sign into your account. If you don’t have an account yet, there is also an option to go to the Amie Street site and create one. Enter in your account credentials… Now you’ll be able to access your Library, Playlists, Search for new tunes, and check out your Recommended bands and artists. Hover the pointer over an album to get a bit more info about it such as the music genre. You’ll be able to play the songs from the playlists you created on the Amie Street site. You can browse through the history of the music you’ve played as well. Not all the features of this app seem to work as you’d expect them to, and some of the features are not yet available like the Browse feature.   Conclusion At the time of this writing we weren’t able to purchase music or get additional information about the artists. As development continues on Boxee and this app, you can expect more of a full user experience and the ability to purchase music. Even though some of the features are a bit buggy or not available, if you’re a Boxee user and a fan of Amie Street, this is cool app to add to your collection. • How do I implement a Bullet Physics CollisionObject that represents my cube like terrain?

  I've successfully integrated the Bullet Physics library into my entity/component system. Entities can collide with each other. Now I need to enable them to collide with the terrain, which is finite and cube-like (think InfiniMiner or it's clone Minecraft). I only started using the Bullet Physics library yesterday, so perhaps I'm missing something obvious. So far I've extended the RigidBody class to override the checkCollisionWith(CollisionObject co) function. At the moment it's just a simple check of the origin, not using the other shape. I'll iterate on that later. For now it looks like this: @Override public boolean checkCollideWith(CollisionObject co) { Transform t = new Transform(); co.getWorldTransform(t); if(COLONY.SolidAtPoint(t.origin.x, t.origin.y,t.origin.z)){ return true; } return false; } This works great, as far as detecting when collisions happen. However, this doesn't handle the collision response. It seems that the default collision response is to move the colliding objects outside of each others shapes, possibly their AABBs. At the moment the shape of the terrain is just a box the size of the world. This means the entities that collide with the terrain just shoot away to outside that world size box. So it's clear that I either need to modify the collision response or I need to create a shape that conforms directly to the shape of the terrain. So which option is best and how do I go about implementing it? It should be noted that the terrain is dynamic and frequently modified by the player.

• Setting up Apache and PHP on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

  I've recently purchased an Apple iMac. Unfortunately, enabling Apache and PHP has thrown up some problems. I enabled Mac's built-in Web Sharing through System Preferences, at which point I got an output and could add HTML files to my user directory. However, PHP files were being displayed rather than interpreted. I then discovered this is because PHP isn't enabled by default on Mac's Apache set-up. Admittedly, I don't understand what the above did; I just thought it looked like a Terminal command and tried it. I have no experience in setting up Apache on Mac OS X (and I've only installed XAMPP and WampServer on Windows). So any points on reversing the aforementioned, and then successfully enabling PHP would be great. EDIT: I've discovered, via Console, the following error message is being recorded when trying to browse to 127.0.0.1... (org.apache.httpd) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs (org.apache.httpd[13453]) Exited with exit code: 1 Does this point any more to the issue?   I have a rails app on an old Ubuntu server I need to move onto a new machine. I haven't worked with ruby on rails so I don't really know anything about the structure of the app. I want to load this onto an Ubuntu 8.04 AMI on Amazon EC2 and am looking for any information regarding the migration process such as: Do I copy over the entire folder defined as the application root in the mongrel config (for ex: /u/apps/myapp/current) or just certain folders? • Python install issue on Mac OS X

  I have been using the standard python that comes with OS X Lion (2.7.2) but I wanted to build a UCS-4 version to handle 4-byte unicode characters better. I had already installed pip and packages like pytz, virtualenv and virtualenvwrapper, etc., and these are installed in /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages. My $PATH is /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin. To build a new version of python on the machine (outside of any project specific virtual environments, that will come later), I followed the instructions on this article and managed to build it in /usr/local/bin. The problem is that when I launched a new bash window, I got the following virtualenvwrapper error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "<string>", line 1, in <module> ImportError: No module named virtualenvwrapper.hook_loader virtualenvwrapper.sh: There was a problem running the initialization hooks. If Python could not import the module virtualenvwrapper.hook_loader, check that virtualenv has been installed for VIRTUALENVWRAPPER_PYTHON=/usr/local/bin/python and that PATH is set properly. The instructions said to move /usr/local/bin to the top of the /etc/paths file, and since then I've noticed some strange issues. I installed pip into /usr/local/bin and now I have assumed that since I'm working in /usr/local/bin, and the newly installed python's site packages is now located in /usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages, when I do pip freeze, it should be empty as nothing is installed there yet. However, pip freeze still reports things installed in the old (OS X) site-packages folder. Here's some info after the build: $ which python /usr/local/bin/python $ which pip /usr/local/bin/pip $ echo $PATH /usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin When I uninstall a python package with pip, it removes it from the old site-packages folder as expected. When I install it again, instead of installing it in /usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages, it installs it in /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages (verified by attempting to install it again and receiving Requirement already satisfied (use --upgrade to upgrade): pytz in /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages ). How is it getting that path for the old site-packages folder? Why won't it install it in the correct location for the python install it's using? I'm getting several other issues since promoting /usr/local/bin but I think if I understand this I'll be able to get somewhere. Can anyone see what's happening? If you need any more info I'll be happy to provide it.

• How to Search for (and Find) Solaris Docs

  Just the other day, I went to the recently-released Oracle Solaris 11 library to search for information about the print service changes. I knew there had been changes in Oracle Solaris 11, but could not remember the new approach to printing. So, being the optimist that I (never) am, I went to the Oracle Solaris 11 Information Library on docs.oracle.com and typed "print service" into the search box. Imagine my surprise when the response back was: We did not find any search results for: print service site:download.oracle.com url:/docs/cd/E23824_01. OMG! WTF? Are you kidding me? After throwing a few stuffed animals at my computer screen, I tried again. Is search broken? Well, sort of (and I'm trying to get it fixed). In the meantime, however, there is a reasonably simple user workaround. Possibly unnoticed by most people, there is a Within drop-down menu on the Oracle search results page. If you simply open the Within menu, select Documentation, and click the little magnifying glass again, you (should) get the expected results. Is it perfect? • Bad Spot to Be In: Playing Catch-up with Mobile Advertising

  You probably noticed, there’s a mass migration going on from online desktop/laptop usage to smartphone/tablet usage.  It’s an indicator of how we live our lives in the modern world: always on the go, with no intention of being disconnected while out there. Consequently, paid as it relates to mobile advertising is taking the social spotlight. eMarketer estimated that in 2013, US adults would spend about 2 hours, 21 minutes a day on mobile, not counting talking time. More people in the world own smartphones than own toothbrushes (bad news I suppose if you’re marketing toothpaste). They’re using those mobile devices to access social networks, consuming at least 17% of their mobile time on them. Frankly, you don’t need a deep dive into mobile usage stats to know what’s going on. Just look around you in any store, venue or coffee shop. It’s really obvious…our mobile devices are now where we “are,” so that’s where marketers can increasingly reach us. And it’s a smart place for them to do just that. Mobile devices can be viewed more and more as shopping facilitators. Usually when someone is on mobile, they are not in passive research mode. They are likely standing near a store or in front of a product, using their mobile to seek reassurance that buying that product is the right move. They are the hottest of hot prospects. Consider that 4 out of 5 consumers use smartphones to shop, 52% of Americans use mobile devices for in-store for research, 70% of mobile searches lead to online action inside of an hour, and people that find you on mobile convert at almost 3x the rate as those that find you on desktop or laptop. But what are marketers doing? Enter statistics from Mary Meeker’s latest State of the Internet report. Common sense says you buy advertising where people are spending their eyeball time, right? But while mobile is 20% of media use and rising, the ad spend there is 4%. Conversely, while print usage is at 5% and falling, ad spend there is 19%. We all love nostalgia, but come on. There are reasons marketing dollar migration to mobile has not matched user migration, including the availability of mobile ad products and the ability to measure user response to mobile ads. But interesting things are happening now. First came Facebook’s mobile ad, which let app developers pay to get potential downloads. Then their mobile ad network was announced at F8, allowing marketers to target users across non-Facebook apps while leveraging the wealth of diverse data Facebook has on those users, a big deal since Nielsen has pointed out mobile apps make up 89% of the media time spent on mobile. Twitter has a similar play in motion with their MoPub acquisition. And now mobile deeplinks have arrived, which can take users straight to sub-pages of mobile apps for a faster, more direct shopper/researcher user experience. The sooner the gratification, the smoother and faster the conversion. To be clear, growth in mobile ad spending is well underway. After posting $13.1 billion in 2013, Gartner expects global mobile ad spending to reach $18 billion this year, then go to $41.9 billion by 2017. Cheap smartphones and data plans are spreading worldwide, further fueling the shift to mobile. Mobile usage in India alone should grow 400% by 2018. And, of course, there’s the famous statistic that mobile should overtake desktop Internet usage this year. How can we as marketers mess up this opportunity? Two ways. We could position ourselves in perpetual “catch-up” mode and keep spending ad dollars where the public used to be. And we could annoy mobile users with horrid old-school marketing practices. Two-thirds of users told Forrester they think interruptive in-app ads are more annoying than TV ads. Make sure your brand’s social marketing technology platform is delivering a crystal clear picture of your social connections so the mobile touch point is highly relevant, mobile optimized, and delivering real value and satisfying experiences. • Is it possible to edit the web pages in the Profile Manager (OSX Lion Server) user portal?

  When setting up Profile Manager in Lion Server, there are a few web pages that are generated for web management of both devices and profiles. Is it possible to edit these pages in any way? I am just looking to customize the look and feel without changing the functionality. If editing is possible, where are these pages stored? I have looked through the /Library/Server/ProfileManager and /Library/Server/Web folders without any luck. This is one particular page I would like to edit. Ideally I would like to be able to edit the HTML directly. I am looking to match the page's style with a variety of other pages hosted on the server.
