• SO what RDF database do i use for product attribute situation initially i thought about using EAV?

  Hi, i have a similar issue as espoused in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/695752/product-table-many-kinds-of-product-each-product-has-many-parameters i am convinced to use RDF now. only because of one of the comments made by Bill Karwin in the answer to the above issue but i already have a database in mysql and the code is in php. 1) So what RDF database should I use? 2) do i combine the approach? meaning i have a class table inheritance in the mysql database and just the weird product attributes in the RDF? I dont think i should move everything to a RDF database since it is only just products and the wide array of possible attributes and value that is giving me the problem. 3) what php resources, articles should i look at that will help me better in the creation of this? 4) more articles or resources that helps me to better understand RDF in the context of the above challenge of building something that will better hold all sorts of products' attributes and values will be greatly appreciated. i tend to work better when i have a conceptual understanding of what is going on. Do bear in mind i am a complete novice to this and my knowledge of programming and database is average at best.

• SQL: script to create country, state tables

  Consider writing an application that requires registration for an entity, and the schema has been defined to require the country, state/prov/county data to be normalized. This is fairly typical stuff here. Naming also is important to reflect. Each country has a different name for this entity: USA = states Australia = states + territories Canada = provinces + territories Mexico = states Brazil = states Sweden = provinces UK = counties, principalities, and perhaps more! Most times when approaching this problem, I have to scratch together a list of good countries, and the states/prov/counties of each. The app may be concerned with a few countries and not others. The process is full of pain. It typically involves one of two approaches: opening up some previous DB and creating a CREATE script based on those tables. Run that script in the context of the new system. creating a DTS package from database1 to database2, with all the DDL and data included in the transfer. My goal now is to script the creation and insert of the countries that I'd be concerned with in the app of the day. When I want to roll out Countries X/Y/Z, I'll open CountryX.sql, and load its states into the ProvState table. Question: do you have a set of scripts in your toolset to create schema and data for countries and state/province/county? If so, would you share your scripts here? (U.K. citizens, please feel free to correct me by way of a comment in the use of counties.)

• Post method in Servlet is not being called again after being executed once

  I am implementing a database based web application using servlets. Now, when I input a parameter using a form in the jsp page, it redirects it to a servlet which subsequently adds the value to the database (the servlet creates a new table if the table doesn't already exist). The creation of the table and the addition of value works fine if the table doesn't already exists. Once it is created however and the parameter is inputted again in the form, the submit button no longer redirects it to the servlet. Nor is the value added to the database. Kindly advise me as to where I am going wrong. • How should child views of UIScrollView report their bounds for contentSize?

  I'm looking more for advice on the correct design for a view. What I have is a UIScrollView that contains one or more custom Views I have created. My problem is, who reports to the scrollview what it's contentSize should be? I have the following: UIView +-UIScrollView +-CustomView 1 with dynamic height depending on data +-CustomView 2 with dynamic Height depending on data The UIViewController creates new instances of the custom views with data and then adds them as subviews to the UIScrollView. The problem I'm having is how to set the value of the scrollview's contentSize? Right now, I'm not doing that and the contents of the scrollview are clipped with no scrolling possible. Should the custom view call [parent setContentSize:] in its drawRect:? Should the UIViewController query the custom view after creation to get its bounds and then call setContentSize? Should I subclass the UIScrollView to override addSubView to query each subview's height? Is there something else I'm missing? I hope I explained that properly. I'm new to this and still getting a handle on things.

• Is it bad practice to make a setter return "this"?

  Is it a good or bad idea to make setters in java return "this"? public Employee setName(String name){ this.name = name; return this; } This pattern can be useful because then you can chain setters like this: list.add(new Employee().setName("Jack Sparrow").setId(1).setFoo("bacon!")); instead of this: Employee e = new Employee(); e.setName("Jack Sparrow"); ...and so on... list.add(e); ...but it sort of goes against standard convention. I suppose it might be worthwhile just because it can make that setter do something else useful. I've seen this pattern used some places (e.g. JMock, JPA), but it seems uncommon, and only generally used for very well defined APIs where this pattern is used everywhere. Update: What I've described is obviously valid, but what I am really looking for is some thoughts on whether this is generally acceptable, and if there are any pitfalls or related best practices. I know about the Builder pattern but it is a little more involved then what I am describing - as Josh Bloch describes it there is an associated static Builder class for object creation.

• Any high-level languages that can use c libraries?

  I know this question could be in vain, but it's just out of curiosity, and I'm still much a newb^^ Anyways I've been loving python for some time while learning it. My problem is obviously speed issues. I'd like to get into indie game creation, and for the short future, 2d and pygame will work. But I'd eventually like to branch into the 3d area, and python is really too slow to make anything 3d and professional. So I'm wondering if there has ever been work to create a high-level language able to import and use c libraries? I've looked at Genie and it seems to be able to use certain libraries, but I'm not sure to what extent. Will I be able to use it for openGL programing, or in a c game engine? I do know some lisp and enjoy it a lot, but there aren't a great many libraries out there for it. Which leads to the problem: I can't stand C syntax, but C has libraries galore that I could need! And game engines like irrlicht. Is there any language that can be used in place of C around C? Thanks so much guys

• Ruby on Rails 2.3.5: Populating my prod and devel database with data (migration or fixture?)

  I need to populate my production database app with data in particular tables. This is before anyone ever even touches the application. This data would also be required in development mode as it's required for testing against. Fixtures are normally the way to go for testing data, but what's the "best practice" for Ruby on Rails to ship this data to the live database also upon db creation? ultimately this is a two part question I suppose. 1) What's the best way to load test data into my database for development, this will be roughly 1,000 items. Is it through a migration or through fixtures? The reason this is a different answer than the question below is that in development, there's certain fields in the tables that I'd like to make random. In production, these fields would all start with the same value of 0. 2) What's the best way to bootstrap a production db with live data I need in it, is this also through a migration or fixture? I think the answer is to seed as described here: http://lptf.blogspot.com/2009/09/seed-data-in-rails-234.html but I need a way to seed for development and seed for production. Also, why bother using Fixtures if seeding is available? When does one seed and when does one use fixtures?

• Need advice on comparing the performance of 2 equivalent linq to sql queries

  I am working on tool to optimize linq to sql queries. Basically it intercepts the linq execution pipeline and makes some optimizations like for example removing a redundant join from a query. Of course, there is an overhead in the execution time before the query gets executed in the dbms, but then, the query should be processed faster. I don't want to use a sql profiler because I know that the generated query will be perform better in the dbms than the original one, I am looking for a correct way of measuring the global time between the creation of the query in linq and the end of its execution. Currently, I am using the Stopwatch class and my code looks something like this: var sw = new Stopwatch(); sw.Start(); const int amount = 100; for (var i = 0; i < amount; i++) { ExecuteNonOptimizedQuery(); } sw.Stop(); Console.Writeline("Executing the query {2} times took: {0}ms. On average, each query took: {1}ms", sw.ElapsedMilliseconds, sw.ElapsedMilliseconds / amount, amount); Basically the ExecutenNonOptimizedQuery() method creates a new DataContext, creates a query and then iterates over the results. I did this for both versions of the query, the normal one and the optimized one. I took the idea from this post from Frans Bouma. Is there any other approach/considerations I should take?   I need to transform a lot of XML files (Fedora export) into a different kind of XML. Trying to do it with XSL stylesheets and checking with the msxsl transformer. • Association and model data saving problem

  Developing with cakephp 1.3 (latest from github). There are 2 models bind with hasAndBelongsToMany: documents and tags. Document can have many tags in other words. I've add a new document submitting form there user can enter a list of tags separated with commas (new tag will be added, if not exist already). I looked at cakephp bakery 2.0 source code on github and found the solution.   This question is related to sending an SMS from a link in a WAP page? Historically I have used sms: which has worked on SonyEricsson, Nokia and other such 'legacy' devices. An example of the mark-up would be; <a href="sms:0123456789?body=test%20message">send</a> I am aware that i-phone does not allow you to specify the body. If the body tag is present then the device closes the browser and opens the SMS application but does not go as far as taking the user to message creation. As such the following does not really work; <a href="sms:0123456789?body=test%20message">send</a> however, this partially does... in that it takes the user to the editor and selects the recipient. <a href="sms:0123456789">send</a> My tests with Android (HTC desire) cause the message editor to crash (with the above examples). I have managed to get the message editor to open successfully but not managed to pass any details (recipient or message body) using; <a href="sms://0123456789">send</a> Note the :// which is not correct according to the Nokia specs. Has anyone had any more success? Sorry if this is a bit hazy, its probably more of a discussion than a question.

• Embed ActionScript (AS) into flash

  Hey SO, I've never dealt with Flash/ActionScript, so please bear with me. Mostly, I'm a bit confused. I've done many work with Java/C as well as HTML/Javascript. I am working with a designer who provides me with flash files (.swf). From my point of view, it's a simple "mock" to which I need to embed a single object. This object is a TextBox, with which the user interacts. I need to be able to Insert such a TextBox to a Flash file Retrieve text upon key event process it, and return it to the TextBox As I understood from other posts, I'll be working with AS, right? How do I embed such an object to an existing Flash file? Being that the graphical part is over once I have the TextBox, would I need any fancy IDE for that? What IDE is that (I usually work with Eclipse)? One last note: I am working with that designer, so I have access to all her creation process. She does not know code, nor do I think she'll get it. I would much prefer to give her as little headache as possible (e.g. just instruct her how to export the files to me from her Adobe Flash CS5 studio). Many thanks, David

• spring.net proxy factory with target type needs property virtual ?

  Hi all, I'm creating spring.net proxy in code by using ProxyFactory object with ProxyTargetType to true to have a proxy on a non interfaced complex object. Proxying seems ok till i call a method on that object. The method references a public property and if this property is not virtual it's value is null. This doesn't happen if i use Spring.Aop.Framework.AutoProxy.InheritanceBasedAopConfigurer in spring config file but in this case i can't use this because spring context doesn't own this object. Is this normal to have such behavior or is there a tweak to perform what i want (proxying object virtual method without having to change properties virtual)? Note that i tried factory.AutoDetectInterfaces and factory.ProxyTargetAttributes values but doesn't help.   I have created a PHP script and I am lacking to extract the primary key, I have given flow below, please help me in how can i modify to get primary key I am using MySQL DB, working for Joomla, My requirement is tracking the activity like insert/update/delete on any table and store it in another audit table using triggers, i.e. I am doing Auditing. DB's table structure: Few tables dont have any PK nor auto increment key Flow of my script is : I fetch out all table from DB. I check whether the table have any trigger or not. If yes then it moves to check nfor next table and so on. If it does'nt find any trigger then it creates the triggers for the table, such that, -it first checks if the table has any primary key or not(for inserting in Tracking audit table for every change made) if it has the primary key then it uses it further in creation of trigger. if it doesnt find any PK then it proceeds further in creating the trigger without inserting any id in audit table Now here, My problem is I need the PK every time so that I can record the id of any particular table in which the insert/update/delete is performed, so that further i can use this audit track table to replicate in production DB.. Now as I haave mentioned earlier that I am not available with PK/auto-incremented in some table, then what should I do get the particular id in which change is done? please guide me...GEEKS!!!

  i'm trying to use the wave module to read wav files in python. whats not typical of my applications is that I'm NOT using a file or a filename to read the wav file, but instead i have the wav file in a buffer. • Keep Hibernate Initializer from Crashing Program

  I have a Java program using a basic Hibernate session factory. I had an issue with a hibernate hbm.xml mapping file and it crashed my program even though I had the getSessionFactory() call in a try catch try { session = SessionFactoryUtil.getSessionFactory().openStatelessSession(); session.beginTransaction(); rh = getRunHistoryEntry(session); if(rh == null) { throw new Exception("No run history information found in the database for run id " + runId_ + "!"); } } catch(Exception ex) { logger.error("Error initializing hibernate"); } It still manages to break out of this try/catch and crash the main thread. How do I keep it from doing this? The main issue is I have a bunch of cleanup commands that NEED to be run before the main thread shuts down and need to be able to guarantee that even after a failure it still cleans up and goes down somewhat gracefully. • [MFC] Creating multiple dialogs in an MFC app with no main Window, they become children of each othe

  (title updated) Following on from this question, now I have a clearer picture what's going on... I have a MFC application with no main window, which exposes an API to create dialogs. When I call some of these methods repeatedly, the dialogs created are parented to each other instead of all being parented to the desktop... I have no idea why. But anyway even after creation, I am unable to change the parent back to NULL or CWnd::GetDesktopWindow()... if I call SetParent followed by GetParent, nothing has changed. So apart from the really weird question of why Windows is magically parenting each dialog to the last one created, is there anything I'm missing to be able to set these windows as children of the desktop? UPDATED: I have found the reason for all this, but not the solution. • Devise routes to only use custom sign in page

  I am trying to learn Devise and seem to have hit a problem that is nearly the same as many, many questions here on SO but just slightly different enough that I am not getting much traction following those questions' threads. I have a very simple application. Users can sign in and sign out (and also the devise 'forgot password' stuff is enabled - I am not concerned about it at this time) and that is it. They can't register, they can't edit their profile other than to change their password, they can't do anything except sign in and sign out. (Account creation will, for now, be handled manually at the command line.) I would vastly prefer that the only page that users can log in from was "/" (root_path). I already have it working where you can log in from "/", and that is great. The problem I am having is that if you type in your user/password combination incorrectly from the root_path login page, it automatically sends you to the Devise sign-in page to continue trying to sign in. How can I make Devise redirect to root_path on sign-in failure? Here are my routes - they are probably not optimal or correctly configured and I would appreciate pointers on fixing them: root to: "core_pages#splash" devise_for :users, skip: [:sessions] as :user do # get 'signin' => 'devise/sessions#new', as: :new_user_session post 'signin' => 'devise/sessions#create', as: :user_session delete 'signout' => 'devise/sessions#destroy', as: :destroy_user_session, via: Devise.mappings[:user].sign_out_via end match '/home' => 'core_pages#home' Note the commented-out 'get signin' line.   Hi, my problem is, I'm trying to permute all posibilities for 3x3 square and check if the combination is magic.   Hi there! In my Facebook application, I have one Facebook wrapper class to encapsulates some call to Facebook API. I want to to write a unit test for this wrapper class, but since it depends on a so called "access token", which we should get from Facebook dynamically, I'm not sure if it's possible to write one. But apparently the Facebook SDK itself has a PHPUnit test class. • Cannot write to SD card -- canWrite is returning false

I am not running this off of an emulator, I have my android Eris plugged into my computer via USB and running the app off of my phone via Eclipse. Is there a way of giving my app permission so this doesn't happen? Also, this code seems to be create the file default.txt but what if it already exists, will it ignore the creation and just open it to write or do I have to catch something like FileAlreadyExists(if such an exception exists) which then just opens it and writes?   I have a postgresql table containing movements of different items (models) between warehouses. For example, the following record means that 5 units of model 1 have been sent form warehouse 1 to 2: source target model units ------ ------ ----- ----- 1 2 1 5 I am trying to build a SQL query to obtain the difference between units sent and received, grouped by models. Again with an example: source target model units ------ ------ ----- ----- 1 2 1 5 -- 5 sent from 1 to 2 1 2 2 1 2 1 1 2 -- 2 sent from 2 to 1 2 1 1 1 -- 1 more sent from 2 to 1 The result should be: source target model diff ------ ------ ----- ---- 1 2 1 2 -- 5 sent minus 3 received 1 2 2 1 I wonder if this is possible with a single SQL query. • Downloading attachments to directory with IMAP in PHP, randomly works

  I found PHP code online to download attachments to a directory using IMAP from here. http://www.nerdydork.com/download-pop3imap-email-attachments-with-php.html I modified it slightly changing $structure = imap_fetchstructure($mbox, $jk); $parts = ($structure->parts); to $structure = imap_fetchstructure($mbox, $jk); $parts = ($structure); to get it to run properly, as otherwise I got an error about how stdClass doesn't define a property called $parts. Doing that, I was able to download all the attachments. I tested it again recently though, and it didn't work. Well, it didn't work 6 times, worked the 7th, and then hasn't worked since. I'm thinking it has something to do with me screwing up the parts handling, since count($parts) keeps returning 1 for each message, so it's not finding any attachments I think. Since it downloaded the attachments at one point with no issues, I feel confident that the area things are getting screwed up is right here. Before this block of code is a for loop that goes through each message in the box, and after it is loop that just goes through $parts for each imap structure. Thanks for any help you can provide. I looked at the imap_fetchstructure page on php.net and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Edit: I just double-checked the folder after typing up my question and it all popped up. I feel like I'm going nuts. I hadn't run the code since a few minutes before I started typing this, and it doesn't make sense to me that it would take this long to trigger. I have some 800 messages in the mailbox, but I figured since it printed my statement at the very end of the PHP that all of the file creation work was done.
