  How do I get the first row in an excel workbook & save it to a new excel workbook using .net c#? I dont know the amount of columns so need to get entire row. • Ranged integers in .NET (or C#)

  Am I being blind, or does the .NET framework not provide any kind of ranged integer class? That is, a type that would prevent you setting a value outside some given bounds that are not the full range of the basic data type. For example, an integer type that would restrict its values to between 1 and 100. Showing my age here, but back in '93, I remember using that sort of thing in Modula-2 (eeek!), but I've not seen explicit framework / language support for it since. Am I just missing something, or is it a case of "it's so simple to make your own that the framework doesn't bother"? Cheers.

  I am trying to read a matlab file into R using R.matlab but am encountering this error: require(R.matlab) r <- readMat("file.mat", verbose=T) Trying to read MAT v5 file stream... Error in readTag(this) : Unknown data type. Not in range [1,19]: 18569 In addition: Warning message: In readMat5Header(this, firstFourBytes = firstFourBytes) : Unknown MAT version tag: 512. Will assume version 5. How can this issue be solved or is there an alternative way to load matlab files? I can use hdf5load but have heard this can mess with the data. Thanks!

  I've got the following reduced testcase: typedef struct TestStruct { int length; int values[]; }; TestStruct t = {3, {0, 1, 2}}; This works with Visual C++, but doesn't compile with g++ under linux. Can anyone help me make this specific kind of initializer portable? Additional details: the actual structure I'm working with has several other int values, and the array can range in length from a single entry to over 1800 entries. Any help much appreciated. Thanks!

  I have a table called users where I have two columns: name and created_at. created_at column column is of type datetime and it stores the datetime when this user was created. I need to know the number of users created for a given date range. Let's say I ask give me user report between 1-nov-2010 and 30-nov-2010 . I need something like this 1-nov-2010: 2 2-nov-2010: 5 The problem I am running into is that created_at data has value upto second. How do I check if a created_at date falls within a given date. • Timespan not accepting day in MVC3

  I have a MVC3 application in which i want to set a timespan to for example 2 days and 5 hours. when i enter 02:05:00:00 it gives me the following exception: System.OverflowException: SqlDbType.Time overflow. Value '2.05:00:00' is out of range. Must be between 00:00:00.0000000 and 23:59:59.9999999. When i enter 05:00:00 it correctly saves 5 hours into the database. according to MSDN timespan has a property for days. How do i correctly set the days? Model: public class ProductionTimeVM { [Required] public TimeSpan DefaultTime { get; set; } } In my view i just use: @Html.TextBoxFor(x => x.DefaultTime) For my controller: public ActionResult SaveProductionTime(ProductionTimeVM vm) { ProductionTime productionTime = new ProductionTime(); productionTime.Default = vm.DefaultTime; //some more code } Any idea's?

• Connecting data to a GUI - OOP

  I have an application with several graphs and tables on it. I worked fast and just made classes like Graph and Table that each contained a request object (pseudo-code): class Graph { private request; public function setDateRange(dateRange) { request.setDateRange(dateRange); } public function refresh() { request.getData(function() { //refresh the display }); } } Upon a GUI event (say, someone changes the date range dropdown), I'd just call the setters on the Graph instance and then refresh it. Well, when I added other GUI elements like tables and whatnot, they all basically had similar methods (setDateRange and other things common to the request). What are some more elegant OOP ways of doing this? The application is very simple and I don't want to over-architect it, but I also don't want to have a bunch of classes with basically the same methods that are just routing to a request object. I also don't want to set up each GUI class as inheriting from the request class, but I'm open to any ideas really.

  The validations I know of are: Checksum the whole card number should add up to zero. (range is 0-9) Check the first digit(s) against the card type Check the length against the card type Check the CCV length against the card type (I think all the major types are 3 anyway) Of course make sure it is accepted card type as well as non expired. Are there any other validations :) (I expect many folks did not know about all of these) The reason I ask is because I overheard there was one to checksum number against expiration or CCV.. I just wanted to check.

Unfortunately range of these checkboxes depends on select field available in form. I would like to change visible/availabe checkboxes depending on select option choosen.   I was wondering, that if there is a weighted graph G(V,E), and I need to find a single shortest path between any two vertices S and T in it then I could have used the Dijkstras algorithm. but I am not sure how this can be done when we need to find all the distinct shortest paths from S to T. Is it solvable on O(n) time? I had one more question like if we assume that the weights of the edges in the graph can assume values only in certain range lets say 1 <=w(e)<=2 will this effect the time complexity?

  I have a columns called Submit_Date in table Tickets and the datatype of it is Varchar(200) and I am trying to convert it to MM/DD/YYYY format and when i do that i get the following error: Msg 242, Level 16, State 3, Line 1 The conversion of a varchar data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range value.   I'm writing a little homebrew ORM (academic interest). I'm trying to adhere to the TDD concept as a training exercise, and as part of that exercise I'm writing documentation for the API as I develop the class. Case in point - I'm working on a classic "getCollection" type mapper class. I want it to be able to retrieve collections of asset X (let's say blog posts) for a specific user, and also collections based on an arbitrary array of numeric values. So - you might have a method like any one of these $User = $UserMapper->load(1); $ArticleCollection = $ArticleMapper->getCollection(range(10,20)); $ArticleCollection = $ArticleMapper->getCollection($User); $ArticleCollection = $ArticleMapper->getCollection($User->getId()); So, in writing the documentation for the getCollection method - I want to declare the @param variable in the Docblock. Is it better to have a unique method for each argument type, or is it acceptable to have a method that delegates to the correct internal method/class based on argument type?

  What alternatives are there to GAE, given that I already have a good bit of code working that I would like to keep. In other words, I'm digging python. However, my use case is more of a low number of requests, higher CPU usage type use case, and I'm worried that I may not be able to stay with App Engine forever. I have heard a lot of people talking about Amazon Web Services and other sorts of cloud providers, but I am having a hard time seeing where most of these other offerings provide the range of services (data querying, user authentication, automatic scaling) that App Engine provides. What are my options here?

• Spring 3.0 REST implementation or Jersey?

  Hi, SO! I'm currently trying to figure out which implementation of JSR-311 I'm going to recommend further up the food chain. I've pretty much narrowed it down to two options - Spring 3.0 with it's native support for REST - or use Sun's own Jersey (Restlets might also be an option). To me it doesn't seem to be much of a difference in the actual syntax, but there might be issues with performance that I haven't figured out yet. The service is meant to replace some heavy-duty EJB's and make a RESTful Webservice instead. The load is expected to be rather high, up in the 100k users per day (max) range, but will be seriously load balanced. Thanks for all your insights.

  Hello to all, i'd like to substitute the default preferences setting activity (vertical, icon-title pair list) with a grid view that better fit a large landscape display. About, let's say, the audio preferences, i add an icon to a GridView and, on item click event, i use this code startActivityForResult(new Intent(android.provider.Settings.ACTION_SOUND_SETTINGS), 0); Is it possible to get the default settings icon? If i could use an ipotetic getDrawable(android.R.drawable.default_icon_for_audio_preferences_settings), I would to maintain the default icon also in my preferences grid. A preferences provider exists? Looking at my development device preferences i can see Wireless, call, audio, display and so on. • Enumerating combinations in a distributed manner

  I have a problem where I must analyse 500C5 combinations (255244687600) of something. Distributing it over a 10 node cluster where each cluster processes roughly 10^6 combinations per second means the job will be complete in about 7hours. The problem I have is distributing the 255244687600 combinations over the 10 nodes. I'd like to present each node with 25524468760, however the algorithms I'm using can only produce the combinations sequentially, I'd like to be able to pass the set of elements and a range of combination indicies eg: [0-10^7) or [10^7,2.0 10^7) etc and have the nodes themselves figure out the combinations. The algorithms I'm using at the moment are from the following: http://home.roadrunner.com/~hinnant/combinations.html A logical question I've considered using a master node, that enumerates each of the combinations and sends work to each of the nodes, however the overhead incurred in iterating the combinations from a single node and communicating back and forth work is enormous, and will subsequently lead to the master node becoming the bottleneck. Are there any good combination iterating algorithms geared up for efficient/optimal distributed enumeration?

  While writing a function which will perform some operation with each number in a range I ran into some problems with floating point inaccuracies. The problem can be seen in the code below: #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { double start = .99999, end = 1.00001, inc = .000001; int steps = (end - start) / inc; for(int i = 0; i <= steps; ++i) { cout << (start + (inc * i)) << endl; } } The problem is that the numbers the above program outputs look like this: 0.99999 0.999991 0.999992 0.999993 0.999994 0.999995 0.999996 0.999997 0.999998 0.999999 1 1 1 1 1 1.00001 1.00001 1.00001 1.00001 1.00001 1.00001 They only appear to be correct up to the first 1. What is the proper way to solve this problem?

• Alternatives to sign() in sqlite for custom order by

  I have a string column which contains some numeric fields, but a lot are 0, empty string or null. The rest are numbers having different range, all positive. I tried to create a custom order by. The order would be done by two fields. First I would like to order the fields that have this number 0 and then sort by name. So something this would work: select * from table order by sign(referenceid) desc, name asc; But Sqlite lacks the sign() -1/0/1 function, and I am on Android and I can't create user defined functions. What other options I have to get this sort done.

• A lot to merge after creating a new branch in SVN

  We have recently made a new branch, let us call it rel3.6, which was based on the last release named rel3.5. Work has started on rel3.6, and meanwhile some bugs has been fixed on rel3.5 which now is used for a service pack to be released soon. Today I wanted to merge those bugs from rel3.5 to rel3.6, so I fired up SmartSVN. Standing in the rel3.6 branch i chosed\ to merge with rel3.5 and selected to browse for a revision range. To my surprise there was a huge list of changes even though I checked "Stop on copy" and only showing mergeable revisions. Most of them where dated back before the creation of rel3.6. I did not expect to find anything from before rel3.5 was created. If I make a merge, the only thing I get are changes and conflicts to directory properties. Have I misunderstood something, or is it possible that something was done wrong when creating the branch?
