  • How to maximize http.sys file upload performance

    I'm building a tool that transfers very large streaming data sets (possibly on the order of terabytes in a single stream; routinely in the tens of gigabytes) from one server to another. The client portion of the tool will read blocks from the source disk, and send them over the network. The server side will read these blocks off the network and write them to a file on the server disk. Right now I'm trying to decide which transport to use. Options are raw TCP, and HTTP. I really, REALLY want to be able to use HTTP. The HttpListener (or WCF if I want to go that route) make it easy to plug in to the HTTP Server API (http.sys), and I can get things like authentication and SSL for free. The problem right now is performance. I wrote a simple test harness that sends 128K blocks of NULL bytes using the BeginWrite/EndWrite async I/O idiom, with async BeginRead/EndRead on the server side. I've modified this test harness so I can do this with either HTTP PUT operations via HttpWebRequest/HttpListener, or plain old socket writes using TcpClient/TcpListener. To rule out issues with network cards or network pathways, both the client and server are on one machine and communicate over localhost. On my 12-core Windows 2008 R2 test server, the TCP version of this test harness can push bytes at 450MB/s, with minimal CPU usage. On the same box, the HTTP version of the test harness runs between 130MB/s and 200MB/s depending upon how I tweak it. In both cases CPU usage is low, and the vast majority of what CPU usage there is is kernel time, so I'm pretty sure my usage of C# and the .NET runtime is not the bottleneck. The box has two 6-core Xeon X5650 processors, 24GB of single-ranked DDR3 RAM, and is used exclusively by me for my own performance testing. I already know about HTTP client tweaks like ServicePointManager.MaxServicePointIdleTime, ServicePointManager.DefaultConnectionLimit, ServicePointManager.Expect100Continue, and HttpWebRequest.AllowWriteStreamBuffering. Does anyone have any ideas for how I can get HTTP.sys performance beyond 200MB/s? Has anyone seen it perform this well on any environment?

    Are Delphi/Pascal being taught in any high schools/colleges/universities, particularly in Canada and the US? I was surprised how many schools in the UK are teaching Delphi. Their largest exam board is even dropping PHP/C#/C in 2011 and encouraging Delphi. I also remember that CodeGear was going to provide development tool licenses to Russian schools a couple of years ago. I'd like to know if it's being taught closer to (my) home.

And when I run my unit tests, I do not want to read any excel file into a data-table -or any call to Db-. So, I would like to have method that returns a data-table with the values that I can use in my test.   • How do I repair the corrupted files found by sfc /scannow? "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

    After running chkdsk C: /F /R and finding out that my hard disk has 24 KB in bad sectors (log is posted below), I decided to run Windows 7's System File Checker utility (sfc /scannow). SFC showed the ff. message after I ran it: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log." Since the CBS.log file is too large, I ran findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" (as per Microsoft's KB 928228 article) to only get the log text pertaining to the corrupt files. (log is also posted below) How do I troubleshoot and repair the corrupted files mentioned by sfc /scannow?   • Configure Active Relying Party STS to Trust Multiple Identity Provider STSes

    I am struggling with the configuration for the scenario below. I have a custom WCF/WIF STS (RP-STS) that provides security tokens to my WCF services RP-STS is an "Active" STS RP-STS acts as a claims transformation STS RP-STS trusts tokens from many customer-specific identity provider STSes (IdP-STS) When a WCF Client connects to a service it should authenticate with it's local IdP-STS The reading that I've done describes this as Home Realm Discovery. HRD is usually described within the context of web applications and Passive STSes. My questions is, for my situation, does the logic for choosing an IdP-STS endpoint belong in the RP-STS or the WCF Client application? I thought it belonged in the RP-STS, but I cannot figure out the configuration to make this happen. RP-STS has a single endpoint, but I cannot figure out how to add more than one trusted issuer per endpoint. Any guidance on this would be very appreciated (I'm out of useful keywords to Google.) Also, if I'm way off please offer alternative approaches. Thanks!

  • Splitting a test to a set of smaller tests

    I want to be able to split a big test to smaller tests so that when the smaller tests pass they imply that the big test would also pass (so there is no reason to run the original big test). I want to do this because smaller tests usually take less time, less effort and are less fragile. I would like to know if there are test design patterns or verification tools that can help me to achieve this test splitting in a robust way. I fear that the connection between the smaller tests and the original test is lost when someone changes something in the set of smaller tests. Another fear is that the set of smaller tests doesn't really cover the big test.   • confusion about transactions and msdtc

    I have some basic confusion about how transactions and msdtc work together. I have a basic server/client winforms app. The app uses transactionscope to encapsulate several sql commands that are executed on the sql server. The app seemed to work fine when I enabled msdtc network access on the server only. Then one day it stopped working saying network access was not enabled. Now it seems that I have to enable msdtc network access on both the client computer and server for transactionscope to work. Does the client or server msdtc service do the transaction work? Or maybe its both? Does anyone have guidance on whether msdtc network access is needed on both client and server or just server?

    Hey guys sorry to be asking this kind noob question, but because I really need some guidance on how to use Multi probe LSH pretty urgently, so I did not do much research myself. I realize there is a lib call LSHKIT available that implemented that algorithm, but I have trouble trying to figure out how to use it. Right now, I have a few thousand feature vector 296 dimension, each representing an image. The vector is used to query an user input image, to retrieve the most similar image. The method I used to derive the distance between vector is euclidean distance. I know this might be a rather noob question, but do you guys have knowledge on how should i implement multi probe LSH? I am really very grateful to any answer or response.

I’m not sure what to study next, so please give me some advice if you can. I think I’m learning well with the Head First Series, and the style will probably serve me well as an intro to programming. However, I don't think the books dive too deeply into any 1 subject.     Inspite of putting the following meta tag I am not getting the expected result: <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" > I open the developer tool window. In the same bar where the menu appears there is an item called Browser Mode: it still shows IE 8 by default. Even doing document.documentMode in the console window shows "8". Am I doing anything wrong?

    This is more of a general question for people to provide me guidance on, basically Im learning iPad/iPhone development and have finally come across the multi-orientation support question. I have looked up a fair amount of doco, and my book "Beginning iPhone 3 Development" has a nice chapter on it. But my question is this, if I was to programatically change my controls (or even use different views for each orientation) how on earth to people maintain their code base? I can just imagine so many issues with spaghetti code/thousands of "if" checks all over the place, that it would drive me nuts to make one small change to the UI arrangement. Does anyone have experience handling this issue? What is a nice way to control it? Thanks a lot Mark

  • Python Animation Timing

    I'm currently working on sprite sheet tool in python that exports the organization into an xml document but I've run into some problems trying to animate a preview. I'm not quite sure how to time the frame rate with python. For example, assuming I have all of my appropriate frame data and drawing functions, how would I go about coding the timing to display it at 30 frames per second (or any other arbitrary rate).

  • What .net CMS with forum, eCommerce and multilanguage support would you reccomend

    I am considering to use a cms for my website. As I am a .net developer, I think the best ideea would be to chose a .net cms tool, but I am not sure which one to pick. I've heard sitefinity from telerik is quite good but unfortunately is quite expensive, DNN it's a pain. Umbraco seems preety good, but it lacks the e-Commerce module. What about mojo portal, have you used it? Which one would you recommend?

  • TFS Integration with Rational ClearQuest and Requirement Manager

    I am working on an integration approach for integrating Rationa (IBM Jazz) Requirement Manager (RM) and Clear Quest (CQ) with TFS. As the teams are moving from ClearCase to TFS, what we are looking at is still being able to manage the requirements in RM and manage testing using CQ. The flow will be something like: Requirements are planned and detailed in RM Create work items in TFS connected to the Requirements in RM Create design and code using VS2010 and managing the version control in TFS Creating test plans and test cases in CQ (connected to requirements in RM) Run test against builds in TFS Publish test results in CQ against builds in TFS Run reports in RM, CQ and TFS that links up the items across the platforms. I have started looking at TFS Integration platform. But shall like to have your guidance for an early resolution and better solution approach.

  • Any software for pattern-matching and -rewriting source code?

    I have some old software (in a language that's not dead but is dead to me ;-)) that implements a basic pattern-matching and -rewriting system for source code. I am considering resurrecting this code, translating it into a modern language, and open-sourcing the project as a refactoring power-tool. Before I go much further, I want to know if anything like this exists already (my google-fu is fanning air on this tonight). Here's how it works: the pattern-matching part matches source-code patterns spanning multiple lines of code using a template with binding variables, the pattern-rewriting part uses a template to rewrite the matched code, inserting the contents of the bound variables from the matching template matching and rewriting templates are associated (1:1) by a simple (unconditional) rewrite rule the software operates on the abstract syntax tree (AST) of the input application, and outputs a modified AST which can then be regenerated into new source code for example, suppose we find a bunch of while-loops that really should be for-loops. The following template will match the while-loop pattern: Template oldLoopPtrn int @cnt@ = 0; while (@cnt@ < @max@) { … @body@ ++@cnt@; } End_Template while the following template will specify the output rewrite pattern: Template newLoopPtrn for(int @cnt@ = 0; @cnt@ < @max@; @cnt@++) { @body@ } End_Template and a simple rule to associate them Rule oldLoopPtrn --> newLoopPtrn so code that looks like this int i=0; while(i<arrlen) { printf("element %d: %f\n",i,arr[i]); ++i; } gets automatically rewritten to look like this for(int i = 0; i < arrlen; i++) { printf("element %d: %f\n",i,arr[i]); } The closest thing I've seen like this is some of the code-refactoring tools, but they seem to be geared towards interactive rewriting of selected snippets, not wholesale automated changes. I believe that this kind of tool could supercharge refactoring, and would work on multiple languages (even HTML/CSS). I also believe that converting and polishing the code base would be a huge project that I simply cannot do alone in any reasonable amount of time. So, anything like this out there already? If not, any obvious features (besides rewrite-rule conditions) to consider? EDIT: The one feature of this system that I like very much is that the template patterns are fairly obvious and easy to read because they're written in the same language as the target source code, not in some esoteric mutated regex/BNF format.
