    I am looking for libraries which can read RSS / ATOM feeds in my J2EE application (based on JBoss Seam). Is Rome the only application there for reading feeds? I am assuming the Seam RSS integration is only for generating RSS feeds and not for reading feeds.

  • Java webapp: where/how to automatically set each picture's width/height

    For several reasons, a lot of "webmaster guides" (like Google and Yahoo!'s webmaster guides/guidelines) repeats several times that it is better to always put the width and height attribute of the img tag. One of the most obvious reason is that the elements in the page won't seem to be "jumping around" to a new location after every picture is loaded (always setting the correct width/height sure gets rid of this behavior). And there are other reasons to follow these guidelines / best practices. So: if we consider that these are indeed good practices if there are a lot of pictures and they are changing often if pictures aren't changing between two .war re-deploy (that is: there's no user-contributed picture) if we don't want to manually edit all these width/height attributes How do we automatically/programmatically serve HTML pages where every img tag have their width/height attribute correctly set as the best practice recommend?

    I am relatively new to multi-threading and want to execute a background task using a Swingworker thread - the method that is called does not actually return anything but I would like to be notified when it has completed.   • Add elements to Arraylist and it replaces all previous elements in Java

    I am adding elements to a ArrayList and it adds the first one correctly but then when I add any subsequent elements it wipes replaces the other elements with the value form the most recently added and adds a new element to the ArrayList. I ran test using arraylist and ints and even another created class and it worked perfectly but soemthing about the custon class i am using here causes problems.     I am trying to create a database of users with connection between users (friends list). There are 2 main tables: UserEntity (main field id) and FriendEntity with fields: - initiatorId - id of user who initiated the friendship - friendId - id of user who has been invited. Now I am trying to fetch all friends of one particular user and encountered some problems with using subqueries in JDO here.     Okay, what I have so far is: You enter the game, and write "spin" to the console. Program will enter the while loop. In the while loop, if entered int is -1, return to the back (Set console input back to "", and let the user select what game he would like to play). Problem: Instead of going back, and selecting "spin" again, the program exits? Why is it happening?   • How to serialize Java primitives using Jersey REST

    In my application I use Jersey REST to serialize complex objects. This works quite fine. But there are a few method which simply return an int or boolean. Jersey can't handle primitive types (to my knowledge), probably because they're no annotated and Jersey has no default annotation for them. I worked around that by creating complex types like a RestBoolean or RestInteger, which simply hold an int or boolean value and have the appropriate annotations. Isn't there an easier way than writing these container objects?

  • Multiple threads modifying a collection in Java??

    Hi, The project I am working on requires a whole bunch of queries towards a database. In principle there are two types of queries I am using: read from excel file, check for a couple of parameters and do a query for hits in the database. These hits are then registered as a series of custom classes. Any hit may (and most likely will) occur more than once so this part of the code checks and updates the occurrence in a custom list implementation that extends ArrayList. for each hit found, do a detail query and parse the output, so that the classes created in (I) get detailed info. I figured I would use multiple threads to optimize time-wise. However I can't really come up with a good way to solve the problem that occurs with the collection these items are stored in. To elaborate a little bit; throughout the execution objects are supposed to be modified by both (I) and (II). I deliberately didn't c/p any code, as it would be big chunks of code to make any sense..     I have created a servlet which displays a form having some fields and a submit button and also created a web service having methods which are needed in my servlet. I have deployed the web service on Tomcat 5.5.9/Axis and servlet web application on Tomcat ( same instance of Tomcat) using eclipse. Since one is web service and other is web application both are running on separate instances of tomcat, so when i run them separately i.e servlet without the call to web service and a client that access that webservice it works fine but when i integrate them both i get a error like exception: javax.servlet.ServletException I would like to call the web service and return the result when i press the button Please advice me on how to implement that.

    Thus the structure is something like this: OasisReportMessagePayloadRTOReport_ItemReport_Data Under report data it's broken into categories: >>Zone >>Type >>Value >>Interval What I need to do is: Get the value if the type is equal to 'myType' and the interval value is the LARGEST. So an example of the xml might be (under report_data): OasisReport MessagePayload RTO REPORT_ITEM REPORT_DATA <zone>myZone1</zone> -- This should be the same in all reports since I only get them for 1 zone <type>myType</type> --This can change from line to line <value>12345</value>--This changes every interval <Interval>122</Interval> -- This is essentially how many 5 minute intervals have taken place since the beginning of a day, finding the "max" lets me know it's the newest data. Thereby I want to find stuff of "MyType" for the "max" interval and pull the Value (into a string, or a double, if not I can convert from string. Can someone help me with this task? Thanks! Note: I've used Xpath to handle things like this in the past, but it seems outlandish for this... as it's SO complex (since not all the reports live in the same report_item, and not all the types are the same in each report)

  • Recommendations of a high volume log event viewer in a Java enviroment

    I am in a situation where I would like to accept a LOT of log events controlled by me - notably the logging agent I am preparing for slf4j - and then analyze them interactively. I am not as such interested in a facility that presents formatted log files, but one that can accept log events as objects and allow me to sort and display on e.g. threads and timelines etc. Chainsaw could maybe be an option but is currently not compatible with logback which I use for technical reasons. Is there any project with stand alone viewers or embedded in an IDE which would be suitable for this kind of log handling. I am aware that I am approaching what might be suitable for a profiler, so if there is a profiler projekt suitable for this kind of data acquisition and display where I can feed the event pipe, I would like to hear about it). Thanks for all feedback Update 2009-03-19: I have found that there is not a log viewer which allows me to see what I would like (a visual display of events with coordinates determined by day and time, etc), so I have decided to create a very terse XML format derived from the log4j XMLLayout adapted to be as readable as possible while still being valid XML-snippets, and then use the Microsoft LogParser to extract the information I need for postprocessing in other tools.

    Hi all, this must be quite simple but I am having great difficulty. You see I am trying to find a string within another string as follows. e = input.indexOf("-->"); s = input.indexOf("<!--"); input = input.replace(input.substring(s, e + 3), " "); The integers e and s are returning -1 in that it was not found and this is causing the replace method to fail. The test string I am using is "Chartered Certified<!--lol--> Accountants (ACCA)". I tried to creat a new string object and pass in the string as an argument as follows e=input.indexOf(new String("<!--")); This yielded the same result. Any ideas ?

    Hi there, I'd like to have your expert explanations about an architectural question. Imagine a Spring MVC webapp, with validation API (JSR 303). So for a request, I have a controller that handles the request, then passes it to the service layer, which passes to the DAO one. Here's my question. At which layer should the validation occur, and how ? My though is that the controller has to handle basic validation (are mandatory fields empty ? Is the field length ok ? etc.). Then the service layer can do some tricker stuff, that involve other objets. The DAO does no validation at all. BUT, if I want to implement some unit testing (i.e. test layers below service, not the controllers), I'll end up with unexpected behavior because some validations should have been done in the Controller layer. As we don't use it for unit testing, there is a problem. What is the best way to deal with this ? I know there is no universal answer, but your personal experience is very welcomed. Thanks a lot.     I am writing a simple multithreaded socketserver and I am wondering how best to handle incoming connections: create a new thread for each new connection. The number of concurrent threads would be limited and waiting connections limited by specifying a backlog add all incoming connections into a queue and have a pool of worker threads that process the queue I am inclined to go for option 2 because I really don't want to refuse any connections, even under high loads, but I am wondering if there are any considerations I should be aware of with accepting effectively unlimited connections?

    I have a web service implemented as EJB. One of it's methods returns Map<String,String>. On client side I use php : $client = new SoapClient($wsdl,array("cache_wsdl"=>WSDL_CACHE_NONE)); $result = $client->foo($params); Everything works fine, but I would like $result-return to be an associative array. Now it looks like array(10) { [0]=> object(stdClass)#46 (2) { ["key"]=> string(4) "key1" ["value"]=> string(4) "val1" } .... I want array(10) {"key1"=>"value1", "key2"=>"value2", .... } The obvious solution is to iterate through this array and create a new array $arr = array(); foreach ($result->return as $val) $arr[$val->key] = $val->value; But I wonder if there is a better way to get an assosicative array ? Thanks in advance.
