• Kubuntu not showing eth0

  I just installed Kubuntu 12.04.2 and do not have an internet connection. I also cannot access the Desktop and only have the terminal. When I enter xlcock I get Error: Can't open display:. I believe this is because I do not have the correct drivers and need to download them ... using the internet which I can't access. • Error while mounting home directory on different logical volume

  I created RAID 5 form 3 hard drives. Formatted as ext4 this raid array. Created VG0 group and lv_home logical volume in LVM. • Is anyone else having issues with opening app links on iOS6 iPad3?

  Links to ios apps (to the app store) are not working for me on my iPad 3/iOS 6. I thought it was my code causing the problem initially, but then I tried it on an iPhone, and an older iPad 2 and they both worked. I looked into it further and it seems no links are working (that I can find). I have googled, but I have not found anything yet. Is there anyone else having this problem? Example: link - this link will work on my computer and phone, but not on my iPad3 running iOS6 - it will just bring up the app store app showing the main screen.

• Unable to change IP address for eth0 without restart in Ubuntu

Inside the physical path I created an index.htm that has: <html> <body>Test</body> </html> But I got the following error: "The page cannot be found". When I put the same index file inside the Web Site Default physical path, it works. I configured the new web site with the link above using the IP configuration and without a Host Header.' What should I do to troubleshoot this or is there an obvious configuration error?

• Changing the Default Install Location of an MSI

  A few months ago, I had to tweak an MSI installer.  It was installing into a specific directory (named the same as the application) underneath Program Files.  Since the location of Program Files can change from machine to machine, the MSI has a special token you can use for Program Files (as well as for the application name).  So the current value for “DefaultLocation” of the Application Folder was: [ProgramFilesFolder]\[ProductName] During installation, these tokens would be replaced by the actual location based on the current machine. I needed to change this to a specific folder underneath the users My Documents directory.  I poked around the help file and I could not find where these special tokens (like “[ProgramFilesFolder]”) were defined.  Obviously, there must be some specific set of values that are available and I’m sure My Documents is one of them.   If you follow my updates on Twitter or on the OTN ArchBeat page on Facebook you have probably noticed that I'm a regular reader of Joe McKendrick's SOA blog on ZDNet. Usually I'm content to simply share a link on my social networks when I find one of McKendrick's posts interesting. But with a recent post, In the cloud era, let's start calling IT what it is: 'Innovation Team', McKendrick hit on a point that warrants more than a quick link: "IT is no longer just a department full of people who code, build and maintain systems. IT is the business partner that plans and strategizes what types of technology solutions the business needs to move forward." Of course, what McKendrick is describing is an increased focus on architecture. Assuming that McKendrick's assessment is correct — and I do — that expanding focus, from coding, building, and maintaining systems to planning and strategizing technology solutions that serve the business, isn't limited to the organizational level. The individual roles within the IT organization will also have to shift to a more broadly architectural mindset. McKendrick's post references Dr. Irving Wladawsky-Berger's assessment of cloud computing as a critical "third model" of computing to emerge in the 50-year history of Information Technology. As computing itself evolves, the underlying roles that make computing possible must evolve accordingly. That evolution will be defined by an increased focus on architecture.

• How can I test linkable/executable files that require re-hosting or retargeting?

  Due to data protection, I cannot discuss fine details of the work itself so apologies PROBLEM CASE Sometimes my software projects require merging/integration with third party (customer or other suppliers) software. these software are often in linkable executables or object code (requires that my source code is retargeted and linked with it). When I get the executables or object code, I cannot validate its operation fully without integrating it with my system. My initial idea is that executables are not meant to be unit tested, they are meant to be linkable with other system, but what is the guarantee that post-linkage and integration behaviour will be okay? There is also no sufficient documentation available (from the customer) to indicate how to go about integrating the executables or object files. I know this is philosophical question, but apparently not enough research could be found at this moment to conclude to a solution. I was hoping that people could help me go to the right direction by suggesting approaches. To start, I have found out that Avionics OEM software is often rehosted and retargeted by third parties e.g. simulator makers. I wonder how they test them. Surely, the source code will not be supplied due to IPR rgulations. UPDATE I have received reasonable and very useful suggestions regarding this area. My current struggle has shifted into testing 3rd party OBJECT code that needs to be linked with my own source code (retargeted) on my host machine. How can I even test object code? Surely, I need to link them first to even think about doing anything. Is it the post-link behaviour that needs to be determined and scripted (using perl,Tcl, etc.) so that inputs and outputs could be verified? No clue!! :( thanks,

  Is it possible to pass command-line arguments to a program that is invoked via a file:// url? I'm trying to include Remote Desktop links in a wiki page that lists some servers: <a href="file:///c|/windows/system32/mstsc.exe /v:serverName">serverName</a> When I omit the argument the link works fine, but when I include it the link doesn't work. I Googled around a bit and couldn't find any references to this. I suspect that the answer is that file:// urls simple don't accept arguments (I can think of all kinds of ways to abuse them if they do), but I thought I'd throw it out there in case I've simply got the syntax wrong. Thanks.

  I have downloaded a video from YouTube. But the uploader has put some link (their twitter and facebook) for promotional purpose. The links keeps coming up through out the video in the black area (up and down of the video which are black). Thank god that links are on the black part of the video otherwise it would be hard to remove.    Also I want to remove the the last few seconds of the video. I don't want to crop that part. The video is in MP4 format. I don't want to lose the quality in anyway, I won't mind if the file size increases. I want a opensource and free tool. Good if it is available to both Windows and Ubuntu. • Frequent connection drops when playing online games (StarCraft 2, Battlefield 3) and behind NAT - how to diagnose?

  I am having some trouble with (I suspect) my wireless router. It's connected to the internet with a regular lan cable and has a static, public IP address. Our two home PCs connect to the router with regular lan cables, plus there's a laptop which connects over wifi. diagram: Internet | | <- isp-supplied cat5 ethernet cable | D-Link D300 ...wifi... laptop / \ / <- cable -> \ PC1 PC2 The PCs and laptop are behind NAT and share the router's public IP. The router is a D-Link D300. PC1 is used for online gaming and I'm experiencing frequent "connection dropped" errors when playing Battlefield 3, StarCraft 2 and the Diablo 3 beta; but not with TeamFortress 2 or the Tribes Ascend beta. The issue goes away when I remove the router and connect PC1 directly to the ISP's cable. I have also tried disconnecting PC2 and the laptop, leaving PC1 as the only machine connected to the router - doesn't help. How can I diagnose what precisely the issue is?

  We have one domain and one sub-domain. Until last week both of them appear in first page of Google search for very important keyword. Unfortunately Google dropped our main domain from search results. our main site has been in first page for 5 years! About one year ago we build this sub-domain. It simply has been redirected to one of pages of main domain. For solving problem we upload a independent site for sub-domain because we guessed that Google think this is our main page of our site. But problem did not solved. What should we do? our main site offer main services and we we want that will be on first page. Shout down sub-domain? Redirect to main site? Put the link of our main site in sub-domain? (About one year ago we put link of this sub-domain to our main site. Google indexed it and continuously bring that to top.) changing in robots.txt ....

• OpenVPN: Single certificate authority, multiple VPNs

  The company in which I work has a single site (I'll refer it as "Site A"). There are several private networks within site A. We have a running instance of OpenVPN which allows some employees to connect to one of the private networks in site A. We're planning to extend our facilities to another site (which I'll refer as "Site B") and we wish to connect both sites using OpenVPN. The VPN which will connect sites A to B will be a trunk link, meaning it will have access to all networks. If we use the same certificate authority for both VPN servers, this will allow the employees, which can only to one of the private networks within site A, to connect to the site-to-site link, which will give them access to all networks. Off course this is undesirable. Using 2 different certificate authorities seems like the obvious solution, but it doesn't feel right. I wounder if there's a way to maintain permission control within a single certificate authority.

• Building modules with linux kernel for custom flavor

  I followed the instructions given in the link: http://blog.avirtualhome.com/how-to-compile-a-new-ubuntu-11-04-natty-kernel/ for building a custom kernel and booting it. Everything works fine, except that when building it, I used the option skipmodule=true (as given in this link), so I guess the modules are not built for this kernel. I'm saying this because after I installed the image (using dpkg -i), when I run 'ls -l' in the /lib/modules/2.6.38-11-i5 folder, all the files/folders except the 'kernel' folder have got updated (Btw, I had built it last time and it had worked fine,this is an update on the same kernel source). So is there some option/command that I missed that exports the modules as well? Thanks for your help.

• IE9 Error: There was a pr?blem sending the command to the program

  I'm working on a new/fresh Windows 7 32bit machine that now has IE9 installed. The user is using the Dell Stardock application as his primary "desktop" (all his links there). When we place an internet link there and click on it we get the following error message: There was a problem sending the command to the program. To me this indicates that IE9 is having trouble going to the website we want to go to, which should get passed as a parameter to the browser when it opens. I don't think this is a StarDock/ObjectDock problem because we also have some other problems with internet links. For example, we cannot move an internet link from the Desktop to the Quick Launch on the task bar. When we do try, it forces us to put the link with the IE icon as part of the IE menu instead of allowing us to have a shortcut there as it's own entry. I should mention however, that links on the desktop and in the taskbar do work as we expect them too (without showing the above error message). It appears that this problem started after installing Windows Updates. Since we installed a whole bunch of updates at once I have no idea which one caused the problem. I did have Google Chrome installed but I uninstalled it since the user wants to use IE. The problem started before I uninstalled Chrome. I also reset the browser settings on IE9. It didn't help. Next I uninstalled IE9 which took me back to IE8. This actually did resolve the problem but the problem came back as soon as I installed IE9 again. We have Verizon Internet Security installed. It's actually a McAfee product rebranded to look like Verizon. I'm not real crazy over this software but the customer has a subscription so we're not planning to change it. I have no reason to believe that this is causing the problem and yet I know that security software is often to blame for strange issues. I've looked at the registry settings for the following keys and everything appears to be ok for every single one of them: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.html HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\ddeexec\Application HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\https\shell\open\command HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\https\shell\open\ddeexec\Application HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open\command HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft.Website\Shell\Open\Command Edit1: I've found two potential solutions but I won't be able to try them until tomorrow. One is to disable the "Windows Font Cache" service. Another is to clear IE cache and browsing history. I won't be able to try out either solution until tomorrow since this is a remote client's machine. I see there are lots of other suggestions online but if you take the time to read them through you'll see that the other suggestions didn't fix the problem.
