Confusion over C++ new operator and classes

Hi all I created a simple class in C++ which has a private dynamic array. In the constructor I initialize the array using new and in the destructor I free it using delete. When I instantiate the class using Class a = Class(..); it works as expected, however it seems I cannot instantiate it using the new operator (Like Class *a = new Class(..);), I always get a segmentation fault. C#, cannot understand this error?

I am using VS2008. I have a project, SystemSoftware project, connect with a database and we are using L2E. I have a RuntimeInfo class which contains some shared information there. I don't want to create another set of Entity Data Model in the helper project. I just added all related files as a link in the new helper project. In the AndeDataViewer project, I get the connection string from above RuntimeInfo class which is a class from my SystemSoftware project as a linked file. The code in AndeDataViewer is like this: public class DbAccess : IDisposable { private String connStr = String.Empty; public DbAccess() { connStr = RuntimeInfo.AndeDBConnStr; } } My SystemSoftware works fine that means the RuntimeInfo class has no problem there. But when I run my AndeDataViewer, the statement inside above constructor, connStr = RuntimeInfo.AndeDBConnStr; , throws an exception. jquery .find to get the text in a <li>

So I have a series of 2 nested ul's. When you click on the text (which is in an a tag) in the li, my page makes that editable and adds a save button. clicking the save button needs to give me back the new text inside that li and the id of that li. The id is not a problem. I'm trying to use jQuery's .find to select that anchor tag (which is successful) but i can't seem to get the text from it. My idea is to avoid magic string keys in my Asp.Net MVC application. To do so, I want to create string constant keys to be shared in the application. For example, I can write TempData[MyClass.Message] or TempData[MyEnum.Message.ToString()] instead of TempData["Message"]. public class MyClass { public const string Message = "Message"; } and public enum MyEnum { Message, Others } My questions are: Which is the better way to avoid magic string keys? I have a java primitive type at hand: Class c = int.class; // or long.class, or boolean.class I'd like to get a 'default value' for this class - specifically the value is assigned to fields of this type if they are not initialized. E.g., '0' for a number, 'false' for a boolean. Is there a generic way to do this? I tried c.newInstance() But I'm getting an InstantiationException, and not a default instance.

Javascript click function for multiple Classes

So basically I have this little social networking site which allow comments. I've built a comment section that will slide down once a user clicks "Comment" and it slides down under the users status. My problem is that right now, the JavaScript only works on ONE post ID, and not the rest obviously seeing you can only use an ID once. But of course if I use classes instead, All the comment sections slide down because now they're all the same class. See below for my HTML and JavaScript. Unable to boot Windows 7 after installing Ubuntu

I have Windows 7 on my machine and then installed Ubuntu 12.04 using a live CD. I can see both Windows 7 and Ubuntu in the grub menu, but when I select Windows 7 it shows a black screen for about 2 seconds and the returns to the Grub menu. But if I select Ubuntu it's working fine. What is Inversion of control and why we need it?

Most of programmer need inversion of control pattern in today’s complex real time application world. So I have decided to write a blog post about it. This blog post will explain what is Inversion of control and why we need it. We are going to take a real world example so it would be better to understand. The problem- Why we need inversion of control? Before giving definition of Inversion of control let’s take a simple real word example to see why we need inversion of control. Please have look on the following code. public class class1 { private class2 _class2; public class1() { _class2=new class2(); } } public class class2 { //Some implementation of class2 } I have two classes “Class1” and “Class2”. If you see the code in that I have created a instance of class2 class in the class1 class constructor. So the “class1” class is dependent on “class2”. I think that is the biggest issue in real world scenario as if we change the “class2” class then we might need to change the “class1” class also. Here there is one type of dependency between this two classes that is called Tight Coupling. Tight coupling will have lots of problem in real world applications as things are tends to be change in future so we have to change all the tight couple classes that are dependent of each other. To avoid this kind of issue we need Inversion of control. What is Inversion of Control? According to the wikipedia following is a definition of Inversion of control. “In software engineering, Inversion of Control (IoC) is an object-oriented programming practice where the object coupling is bound at run time by an assembler object and is typically not known at compile time using static analysis.” So if you read the it carefully it says that we should have object coupling at run time not compile time where it know what object it will create, what method it will call or what feature it will going to use for that. We need to use same classes in such way so that it will not tight couple with each other. There are multiple way to implement Inversion of control. Do I suffer from encapsulation overuse?

I have noticed something in my code in various projects that seems like code smell to me and something bad to do, but I can't deal with it. While trying to write "clean code" I tend to over-use private methods in order to make my code easier to read. The problem is that the code is indeed cleaner but it's also more difficult to test (yeah I know I can test private methods...) and in general it seems a bad habit to me. Here's an example of a class that reads some data from a .csv file and returns a group of customers (another object with various fields and attributes). public class GroupOfCustomersImporter { //... Call fields .... public GroupOfCustomersImporter(String filePath) { this.filePath = filePath; customers = new HashSet<Customer>(); createCSVReader(); read(); constructTTRP_Instance(); } private void createCSVReader() { //.... } private void read() { //.... Reades the file and initializes the class attributes } private void readFirstLine(String[] inputLine) { //.... Method used by the read() method } private void readSecondLine(String[] inputLine) { //.... Method used by the read() method } private void readCustomerLine(String[] inputLine) { //.... Method used by the read() method } private void constructGroupOfCustomers() { //this.groupOfCustomers = new GroupOfCustomers(**attributes of the class**); } public GroupOfCustomers getConstructedGroupOfCustomers() { return this.GroupOfCustomers; } } As you can see the class has only a constructor which calls some private methods to get the job done, I know that's not a good practice not a good practice in general but I prefer to encapsulate all the functionality in the class instead of making the methods public in which case a client should work this way: GroupOfCustomersImporter importer = new GroupOfCustomersImporter(filepath) importer.createCSVReader(); read(); GroupOfCustomer group = constructGoupOfCustomerInstance(); I prefer this because I don't want to put useless lines of code in the client's side code bothering the client class with implementation details. So, Is this actually a bad habit? If yes, how can I avoid it? Please note that the above is just a simple example. Imagine the same situation happening in something a little bit more complex.

Sniffing out SQL Code Smells: Inconsistent use of Symbolic names and Datatypes

It is an awkward feeling. You’ve just delivered a database application that seems to be working fine in production, and you just run a few checks on it. You discover that there is a potential bug that, out of sheer good chance, hasn’t kicked in to produce an error; but it lurks, like a smoking bomb. Worse, maybe you find that the bug has started its evil work of corrupting the data, but in ways that nobody has, so far detected. You investigate, and find the damage. You are somehow going to have to repair it. Yes, it still very occasionally happens to me. It is not a nice feeling, and I do anything I can to prevent it happening. That’s why I’m interested in SQL code smells. SQL Code Smells aren’t necessarily bad practices, but just show you where to focus your attention when checking an application. Sometimes with databases the bugs can be subtle. SQL is rather like HTML: the language does its best to try to carry out your wishes, rather than to be picky about your bugs. Most of the time, this is a great benefit, but not always. One particular place where this can be detrimental is where you have implicit conversion between different data types. Most of the time it is completely harmless but we’re concerned about the occasional time it isn’t. Let’s give an example: String truncation. Let’s give another even more frightening one, rounding errors on assignment to a number of different precision. Each requires a blog-post to explain in detail and I’m not now going to try. Just remember that it is not always a good idea to assign data to variables, parameters or even columns when they aren’t the same datatype, especially if you are relying on implicit conversion to work its magic.For details of the problem and the consequences, see here: SR0014: Data loss might occur when casting from {Type1} to {Type2} . For any experienced Database Developer, this is a more frightening read than a Vampire Story. This is why one of the SQL Code Smells that makes me edgy, in my own or other peoples’ code, is to see parameters, variables and columns that have the same names and different datatypes. Whereas quite a lot of this is perfectly normal and natural, you need to check in case one of two things have gone wrong. Either sloppy naming, or mixed datatypes. Sure it is hard to remember whether you decided that the length of a log entry was 80 or 100 characters long, or the precision of a number. That is why a little check like this I’m going to show you is excellent for tidying up your code before you check it back into source Control! 1/ Checking Parameters only If you were just going to check parameters, you might just do this. It simply groups all the parameters, either input or output, of all the routines (e.g. stored procedures or functions) by their name and checks to see, in the HAVING clause, whether their data types are all the same. Worth investigating. Then we have a @Comment variable that can't decide whether it is a VARCHAR(2000) or a VARCHAR(MAX) 2/ Columns and Parameters Actually, once we’ve cleared up the mess we’ve made of our parameter-naming in the database we’re inspecting, we’re going to be more interested in listing both columns and parameters. We can do this by modifying the routine to list columns as well as parameters. Because of the slight complexity of creating the string version of the datatypes, we will create a fake table of both columns and parameters so that they can both be processed the same way. After all, we want the datatypes to match Unfortunately, parameters do not expose all the attributes we are interested in, such as whether they are nullable (oh yes, subtle bugs happen if this isn’t consistent for a datatype). We’ll have to leave them out for this check. Voila! I can tell you I found quite a few minor issues with the various tabases I tested this on, and found some potential bugs that really leap out at you from the results. Here is the start of the result for AdventureWorks. Yes, AccountNumber is, for some reason, a Varchar(10) in the Customer table. Hmm. odd. Why is a city fifty characters long in that view? The idea of the description of a colour being 256 characters long seems over-ambitious. Go down the list and you'll spot other mistakes. There are no bugs, but just mess. We started out with a listing to examine parameters, then we mixed parameters and columns. Our last listing is for a slightly more in-depth look at table columns. You’ll notice that we’ve delibarately removed the indication of whether a column is persisted, or is an identity column because that gives us false positives for our code smells. If ever there was a source of elusive bugs, you'll find it there. Sadly, these temporary variables are not stored in the metadata so we'll have to find a more subtle way of flushing these out, and that will, I'm afraid, have to wait!

How to sort a ListView control by a column in Visual C#

Microsoft provide an article of the same name (previously published as Q319401) and it shows a nice class 'ListViewColumnSorter ' for sorting a standard ListView when the user clicks the column header. This is very useful for String values, however for Numeric or DateTime data it gives odd results. E.g. 100 would come before 99 in an ascending sort as the string compare sees 1 < 9. So my challenge was to allow other types to be sorted. This turned out to be fairly simple as I just needed to create an inner class in ListViewColumnSorter which extends the .Net CaseInsensitiveComparer class, and then use this as the ObjectCompare member's type. Note: Ideally we would be able to use IComparer as the member's type, but the Compare method is not virtual in CaseInsensitiveComparer , so we have to create an exact type: public class ListViewColumnSorter : IComparer { private CaseInsensitiveComparer ObjectCompare; private MyComparer ObjectCompare; ... rest of Microsofts class implementation... } Here is my private inner comparer class, note the 'new int Compare' as Compare is not virtual, and also note we pass the values to the base compare as the correct type (e.g. Decimal, DateTime) so they compare correctly: private class MyComparer : CaseInsensitiveComparer { public new int Compare(object x, object y) { try { string s1 = x.ToString(); string s2 = y.ToString(); // check for a numeric column decimal n1, n2 = 0; if (Decimal.TryParse(s1, out n1) && Decimal.TryParse(s2, out n2)) return base.Compare(n1, n2); else { // check for a date column DateTime d1, d2; if (DateTime.TryParse(s1, out d1) && DateTime.TryParse(s2, out d2)) return base.Compare(d1, d2); } } catch (ArgumentException) { } // just use base string compare return base.Compare(x, y); } } You could extend this for other types, even custom classes as long as they support ICompare. Helper method to Replace/Remove characters that do not match the Regular Expression

I have a few fields, that use regEx for validation. In case if provided field has unaccepted characters, I don't want to reject the whole field, as most of validators do, but just remove invalid characters. I am expecting to keep only Character Classes for allowed characters and created a helper method to strip unaccepted characters. The allowed pattern should be in Regex format, expect them wrapped in square brackets. function will insert a tilde after opening squere bracket , according to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4460290/replace-chars-if-not-match. Deserialize inherited classes into the same list in XNA

I am writing a Gui for a game (for what else ...). Therefor I wrote a class GuiElement which has some serializeable fields. From this class I deflect a Class "Button" which has one serializeable field more. Furthermore, I have a Class GuiWindow, which is as well deflected from "GuiElement". An Object of this Class has a Field "HandledElements" of the type "List". To know the layout of the Menues, I use XML-Files, which look like that (for example): <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <XnaContent xmlns:Generic="System.Collections.Generic"> <Asset Type="System.Collections.Generic.List[GUI.GuiWindow]"> <Item> <Position>0 0</Position> <AlternativeImagePath></AlternativeImagePath> <IsActive>true</IsActive> <Name>MainMenu</Name> <HandledElements> <Item> <Position>100 100</Position> <AlternativeImagePath></AlternativeImagePath> <IsActive>true</IsActive> <Name>Optionen</Name> <Caption>Optionen</Caption> </Item> </HandledElements> </Item> <Item> <Position>0 0</Position> <AlternativeImagePath></AlternativeImagePath> <IsActive>false</IsActive> <Name>Options</Name> <HandledElements> </HandledElements> </Item> </Asset> </XnaContent> As you can see, the first window has in its "HandledElements" List an Item with the Field . This is a field which only a Button has. The Problem is now: I can't deserialize this XML file, because GuiElement does not have this Field, it only has the few fields above. I thought it would know automatically which Class to use,but it doesn't. Do I really have to give my windows a list for each child class of GuiElement? Or can I do another workaround?
