  • Why do I need to give my options a value attribute in my dropdown? JQuery related.

    So far in my web developing experiences, I've noticed that almost all web developers/designers choose to give their options in a select a value like so: <select name="foo"> <option value="bar">BarCheese</option> // etc. // etc. </select> Is this because it is best practice to do so? I ask this because I have done a lot of work with jQuery and dropdown's lately, and sometimes I get really annoyed when I have to check something like: $('select[name=foo]').val() == "bar"); To me, many times that seems less clear than just being able to check the val() against BarCheese. So why is it that most web developers/designers specify a value paramater instead of just letting the options actual value be its value? And yes, if the option has a value attribute I know I can do something like this: $('select[name=foo] option:contains("BarCheese")').attr('selected', 'selected'); But I would still really like to know why this is done.   • Hiding result sets from multiple selects in a stored procedure

    I have a stored procedure that retrieves SQL queries as text and executes the statements using sp_executesql. Each of the dynamic queries is a count query in that it only returns the number of records found (select COUNT(id) from...). I am looping through a set of SQL queries stored as text and building a table variable out of the results. At the end, I am selecting all the results from the table variable as the result set that I want returned from the stored procedure. However, when I execute the stored procedure, I am naturally getting multiple result sets (one for each of the dynamic queries and one for the final select.) Is there any way I can suppress the results of a select statement executed through sp_executesql? I have found answers that reference storing the results in a temp table, but I don't have control of the query text that I am running so I can't change it to select into anything. Please help. Basically I'm looking for a way to create a query that is essentially a WHERE IN LIKE SELECT statement. As an example, if I wanted to find all user records with a hotmail.com email address, I could do something like: SELECT UserEmail FROM Users WHERE (UserEmail LIKE '%hotmail.com') But what if I wanted to use a subquery as the matching criteria? Something like this: SELECT UserEmail FROM Users WHERE (UserEmail LIKE (SELECT '%'+ Domain FROM Domains)) Is that even possible? If so, what's the right syntax?

    I made the following function in SQL Server 2008 earlier this week that takes two parameters and uses them to select a column of "detail" records and returns them as a single varchar list of comma separated values. Now that I get to thinking about it, I would like to take this table and application-specific function and make it more generic. I am not well-versed in defining SQL functions, as this is my first. How can I change this function to accept a single "column" worth of data, so that I can use it in a more generic way? If I do not use views, what are the alternatives? I mean, in my situation, I want to select some data from a table and then use a few other select queries to work on the subset of data from the first select query? How can I do this efficiently? When this code runs, however, result gets a value of 1. I was expecting it to be 0. Am I missing something? Why is it 1?

    Let's say I have a Person table with a FirstName and LastName column. I extended the Person LINQ entity class with a get property "FullName", that concatenates the first and last names. A LINQ query like: from person... select fullName where id = x generates SQL selecting all Patient columns, since FullName is evaluated after firing the query. I would like to limit the select clause to only the 2 columns required. This is a simple example, but the limitation it shows is that I cannot isolate my business/formatting rules but have to embed them in the LINQ query, so they're not reusable (since it is in the select part) or I need select both columns separately, and then concatenate them higher up in the data or business layer with static helper methods. Any ideas for a clean design using the entity partial classes or extensions? Thanks

  • Selecting row in SSMS causes Entity Framework 4 to Fail

    I have a simple Entity Framework 4 unit test that creates a new record, saves it, attempts to find it, then deletes it. All works great, unless... ... I open up SQL Server Management Studio while stopped at a breakpoint in the unit test and execute a SELECT statement that returns the row I just created (not SELECT FOR UPDATE, not WITH (updlock), no transaction, just a plain SELECT). If I do that before attempting to find the row I just created, I don't find the row. If I instead do that after finding the row but before deleting the row, I do find the row but get an OptimisticConcurrencyException. This is consistently repeatable.   • MVC Html.DropDownList closes prematurely in IE7

    I'm using ASP.NET MVC with jquery. I have a couple of dropdownlists. When I select one via mouse click and then scroll down over the items using the mouse/cursor, the list closes before a selection can be made, before the mouse can be clicked. This doesn't happen when I open them and then up/down arrow to select an item. It doesn't happen all of the time, but a lot. Just to try something different, I added a jquery "select" control with hardcoded values (options) and it displays the same behavior. I have read most of the book CakePHP's website. and googled for all I'm worth, so I presume I am missing something obvious! The Question When editing a 'log item' at www.mydomain/log_items/edit I am presented with the view you would all suspect; namely the columns of the log_items table with the appropriate textfields/select boxes etc. I would also like to incorporate select boxes to choose the client, sub-client, project and sub-project in the 'log_items' edit view. Ideally the 'sub-client' select box should populate itself depending upon the 'client' chosen, the 'project' select box should also populate itself depending on the 'sub-client' selected etc, etc. I guess the way to go about populating the select boxes with relevant options is Ajax, but I am unsure of how to go about actually accessing a model from the child view of a indirectly related model, for example how to create a 'sub-client' select box in the 'log_items' edit view. However, I noticed in the database schema - which is downloadable from the site above link - that the database tables don't have any foreign keys, so now I'm wondering if I'm going about things in the correct manner.   • cfdiv working in FF and Safari but does not show up in IE

    Within a form I have a button that launches a cfwindow, then presents a search screen for the user to make a selection. Once selection is made, the cfwindow closes and the selected content shows in the main page by being bound to a cfdiv. This all works fine in FF but the cfdiv doesn't show at all in IE. In IE, the cfwindow works, the select works, but then no bound page. I have tried setting bindonload and that made no difference (and I need it to be true if there is content that is pulled in via a query when it loads). All I have been able to find so far regarding this issue is setting bindonload to false and putting the cfdiv outside of the form but that's not possible in my current design. Is this correct?

    Hi, i have a select box like that <select name="sehirler_post" id="sehirler_post"> i am getting values via jquery. i know two different ways to get values. first one is : var sehirler_post = jQuery('select#sehirler_post').attr('value'); second one is: jQuery('#sehirler_post ').val() and finally here is my problem, i have something like this: jQuery("#okay").load("ajax_post_category.php?okay="+id+""); i would like to use selectbox value instead of id (okay="+id+"). so, i must change +id+ part with select box value. however i can not do it.. i tried to do like that: jQuery("#okay").load("ajax_post_category.php?okay="+jQuery('#sehirler_post').val()+""); it did not work. there must be a way, so i can use selectbox value instead of id in my load function. if anyone helps me, ill be so glad. regards

    Hi Team, I am using SQL Server 2005. I have a table as given below. There can be multiple cancellations for each FundingID. I want to select the FundingCancellationReason corrersponding to minimum date for each funding. I wrote a query as follows. It is an SQL error 1) Could you please help me to avoid the SQL Error? 2) Is there any better logic to achieve the same?   • help with delete where not in query

    I have a lookup table (##lookup). I know it's bad design because I'm duplicating data, but it speeds up my queries tremendously. I have a query that populates this table insert into ##lookup select distinct col1,col2,... from table1...join...etc... I would like to simulate this behavior: delete from ##lookup insert into ##lookup select distinct col1,col2,... from table1...join...etc... This would clearly update the table correctly. But this is a lot of inserting and deleting. It messes with my indexes and locks up the table for selecting from. This table could also be updated by something like: delete from ##lookup where not in (select distinct col1,col2,... from table1...join...etc...) insert into ##lookup (select distinct col1,col2,... from table1...join...etc...) except if it is already in the table The second way may take longer, but I can say "with no lock" and I will be able to select from the table. Any ideas on how to write the query the second way?
