• AS3 - Event listener that only fires once

- by Zed-K
I'm looking for a way to add an EventListener which will automatically removes itself after the first time it fires, but I can't figure a way of doing this the way I want to. I found this function (here) : public class EventUtil { public static function addOnceEventListener(dispatcher:IEventDispatcher,eventType:String,listener:Function):void { var f:Function = function(e:Event):void { dispatcher.removeEventListener(eventType,f); listener(e); } dispatcher.addEventListener(eventType,f); } } But instead of having to write : EventUtil.addOnceEventListener( dispatcher, eventType, listener ); I would like to use it the usual way : dispatcher.addOnceEventListener( eventType, listener ); Has anybody got an idea of how this could be done? Any help would be greatly apprecitated. (I know that Robert Penner's Signals can do this, but I can't use them since it would mean a lot of code rewriting that I can't afford for my current project)

• What is Northwind.EmployeesRow

- by Anthony
I am doing a tutorial where you use a templatefield in the gridview control to call a function. I don't understand the code for the function. What is the object Northwind.EmployeesRow? This is the tutorial I am doing. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb288032%28v=MSDN.10%29.aspx#aspnett12ustmpfldsvb_topic5 And this is the code for the function. Protected Function DisplayDaysOnJob(ByVal employee As Northwind.EmployeesRow) As String If employee.IsHireDateNull() Then Return "Unknown" Else ' Returns the number of days between the current ' date/time and HireDate Dim ts As TimeSpan = DateTime.Now.Subtract(employee.HireDate) Return ts.Days.ToString("#,##0") End If End Function

• Why wouldn't a flex remoteobject work within a custom component?

- by Gary
Please enlighten this flex noob. I have a remoteobject within my main.mxml. I can call a function on the service from an init() function on my main.mxml, and my java debugger triggers a breakpoint. When I move the remoteobject declaration and function call into a custom component (that is declared within main.mxml), the remote function on java-side no longer gets called, no breakpoints triggered, no errors, silence. How could this be? No spelling errors, or anything like that. mxml code: &ltmx:RemoteObject id="myService" destination="remoteService" endpoint="$(Application.application.home}/messagebroker/amf" &gt &lt/mx:RemoteObject%gt function call is just 'myService.getlist();' when I move it to a custom component, I import mx.core.Application; so the compiler doesn't yell

• getting date from JQueryUI Datepicker

- by Shree
I am using JQueryUI datepicker. I am currently using following: $('#dtpicker').datepicker('getDate'); to get date from the datepicker. This function by default gets me today's date if the user has not selected any date in the picker. Is there some function which gets the date the user has selected? For example, if the user has selected today's date, the function should return today's date. If he didnt select any date, then this function should return false, perhaps. I want this function for validation of date ranges in JQueryUI daterangepicker which currently it is not supporting.

• How do I drag and drop between two listboxes in XUL?

- by pc1oad1etter
I am trying to implement drag and drop between two listboxes. I have a few problems 1) I am not detecting any drag events of any kind from the source list box/ I do not seem to be able to drag from it 2) I can drag from my desktop to the target listbox and I am able to detect 'dragenter' 'dragover' and 'dragexit' events. I am noticing that the event parameter is undefined in my 'dragenter' callback - is this a problem? 3) I cannot figure out how to complete the drag and drop operation. From https://developer.mozilla.org/En/DragDrop/Drag_Operations#Performing_... "If the mouse was released over an element that is a valid drop target, that is, one that cancelled the last dragenter or dragover event, then the drop will be successful, and a drop event will fire at the target. Otherwise, the drag operation is cancelled and no drop event is fired." This seems to be referring to a 'drop' event, though there is not one listed at https://developer.mozilla.org/en/XUL/Events . I can't seem to detect the end of the drag in order to call one of the example 'doDrop()' functions that I find on MDC. My example, so far: http://pastebin.mozilla.org/713676 <window xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/ there.is.only.xul" onload="initialize();"> <vbox> <hbox> <vbox>
List1
<listbox id="source" draggable="true"> <listitem label="1"/> <listitem label="3"/> <listitem label="4"/> <listitem label="5"/> </listbox> </vbox> <vbox>
List2
<listbox id="target" ondragenter="onDragEnter();"> <listitem label="2"/> </listbox> </vbox> </hbox> </vbox>  </window>

- by CJ
I have a piece of javascript that grabs JSON data. When executed locally everything seems to work fine. However, when I try accessing it from a different site, it doesn't work. Here's the script. $(function(){ var aT = new AjaxTest(); aT.getJson(); }); var AjaxTest = function() { this.ajaxUrl = "http://mydeveloperpage.com/sandbox/ajax_json_test/client_reciever.php"; this.getJson = function(){ $.getJSON(this.ajaxUrl, function(data){ $.each(data, function(i, piece){ alert(piece); }); }); } } You can find a copy of the exact same file at "http://mydeveloperpage.com/sandbox/ajax_json_test/". • constructors and inheritance in JS

- by nandinga
Hi all, This is about "inheritance" in JavaScript. Supose I create a constructor Bird(), and another called Parrot() which I make to "inherit" the props of Bird by asigning an instance of it to Parrot's prototype, like the following code shows: function Bird() { this.fly = function(){}; } function Parrot() { this.talk = function(){ alert("praa!!"); }; } Parrot.prototype = new Bird(); var p = new Parrot(); p.talk(); // Alerts "praa!!" alert(p.constructor); // Alerts the Bird function!?!?! After I've created an instance of Parrot, how comes that the .constructor property of it is Bird(), and not Parrot(), which is the constructor I've used to create the object? Thanks!!

• What to name this class?

- by orlandu63
(This is not an interface: I simply omitted the method bodies) class _ { protected $_data = array(); function __construct($data); function set($name, $value); function get($name); function __set($name, $value); function __get($name); //aliases for their respective non-magic methods. # and some other generic methods } Essentially it's a class that provides a magical object-oriented reusable access layer to some data. I've considered DataLayer, DataObject and some others; I'd like to hear some suggestions from someone who's more terminologically savvy.

• Very simple jQuery rollover

- by Gusepo
I made a very simple jQuery img rollover function inspired by this one: http://www.smileycat.com/miaow/archives/000224.php. It just check all the imgs that contain _off in their name and swap them with an img with the same name but "_on" instead of "_off". Since I can't use background imgs in my layout, I feel that's an handy solution. But I've got the feeling that the swapping is not smooth, like if the function runs slow. What do you think? Are there ways to optimize it? Here is the code: function roll_over() { $("img[src*='_off']").hover( function() { var stringa = $(this).attr("src"); var stringa = stringa.replace("_off", "_on"); $(this).attr("src", stringa); }, function() { var stringa = $(this).attr("src"); var stringa = stringa.replace("_on", "_off"); $(this).attr("src", stringa); } ); }

• Inheritance Mapping Strategies with Entity Framework Code First CTP5: Part 2 – Table per Type (TPT)

- by mortezam
In the previous blog post you saw that there are three different approaches to representing an inheritance hierarchy and I explained Table per Hierarchy (TPH) as the default mapping strategy in EF Code First. We argued that the disadvantages of TPH may be too serious for our design since it results in denormalized schemas that can become a major burden in the long run. In today’s blog post we are going to learn about Table per Type (TPT) as another inheritance mapping strategy and we'll see that TPT doesn’t expose us to this problem. Table per Type (TPT)Table per Type is about representing inheritance relationships as relational foreign key associations. Every class/subclass that declares persistent properties—including abstract classes—has its own table. The table for subclasses contains columns only for each noninherited property (each property declared by the subclass itself) along with a primary key that is also a foreign key of the base class table. This approach is shown in the following figure: For example, if an instance of the CreditCard subclass is made persistent, the values of properties declared by the BillingDetail base class are persisted to a new row of the BillingDetails table. Only the values of properties declared by the subclass (i.e. CreditCard) are persisted to a new row of the CreditCards table. The two rows are linked together by their shared primary key value. Later, the subclass instance may be retrieved from the database by joining the subclass table with the base class table. TPT Advantages The primary advantage of this strategy is that the SQL schema is normalized. In addition, schema evolution is straightforward (modifying the base class or adding a new subclass is just a matter of modify/add one table). Integrity constraint definition are also straightforward (note how CardType in CreditCards table is now a non-nullable column). Another much more important advantage is the ability to handle polymorphic associations (a polymorphic association is an association to a base class, hence to all classes in the hierarchy with dynamic resolution of the concrete class at runtime). A polymorphic association to a particular subclass may be represented as a foreign key referencing the table of that particular subclass. Implement TPT in EF Code First We can create a TPT mapping simply by placing Table attribute on the subclasses to specify the mapped table name (Table attribute is a new data annotation and has been added to System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations namespace in CTP5): public abstract class BillingDetail { public int BillingDetailId { get; set; } public string Owner { get; set; } public string Number { get; set; } } [Table("BankAccounts")] public class BankAccount : BillingDetail { public string BankName { get; set; } public string Swift { get; set; } } [Table("CreditCards")] public class CreditCard : BillingDetail { public int CardType { get; set; } public string ExpiryMonth { get; set; } public string ExpiryYear { get; set; } } public class InheritanceMappingContext : DbContext { public DbSet<BillingDetail> BillingDetails { get; set; } } If you prefer fluent API, then you can create a TPT mapping by using ToTable() method: protected override void OnModelCreating(ModelBuilder modelBuilder) { modelBuilder.Entity<BankAccount>().ToTable("BankAccounts"); modelBuilder.Entity<CreditCard>().ToTable("CreditCards"); } Generated SQL For QueriesLet’s take an example of a simple non-polymorphic query that returns a list of all the BankAccounts: var query = from b in context.BillingDetails.OfType<BankAccount>() select b; Executing this query (by invoking ToList() method) results in the following SQL statements being sent to the database (on the bottom, you can also see the result of executing the generated query in SQL Server Management Studio): Now, let’s take an example of a very simple polymorphic query that requests all the BillingDetails which includes both BankAccount and CreditCard types: projects some properties out of the base class BillingDetail, without querying for anything from any of the subclasses: var query = from b in context.BillingDetails select new { b.BillingDetailId, b.Number, b.Owner }; -- var query = from b in context.BillingDetails select b; This LINQ query seems even more simple than the previous one but the resulting SQL query is not as simple as you might expect: -- As you can see, EF Code First relies on an INNER JOIN to detect the existence (or absence) of rows in the subclass tables CreditCards and BankAccounts so it can determine the concrete subclass for a particular row of the BillingDetails table. Also the SQL CASE statements that you see in the beginning of the query is just to ensure columns that are irrelevant for a particular row have NULL values in the returning flattened table. (e.g. BankName for a row that represents a CreditCard type) TPT ConsiderationsEven though this mapping strategy is deceptively simple, the experience shows that performance can be unacceptable for complex class hierarchies because queries always require a join across many tables. In addition, this mapping strategy is more difficult to implement by hand— even ad-hoc reporting is more complex. This is an important consideration if you plan to use handwritten SQL in your application (For ad hoc reporting, database views provide a way to offset the complexity of the TPT strategy. A view may be used to transform the table-per-type model into the much simpler table-per-hierarchy model.) SummaryIn this post we learned about Table per Type as the second inheritance mapping in our series. So far, the strategies we’ve discussed require extra consideration with regard to the SQL schema (e.g. in TPT, foreign keys are needed). This situation changes with the Table per Concrete Type (TPC) that we will discuss in the next post. • Updating List Elements, Haskell

- by Tom
I have homework where I am to update a list using a function that takes two elements and returns a value of part of the first element given in the function. So it's required to update the entire listing by going through each element and update its value by applying the function against all other elements in the list (including itself). So far I've been trying to firstly map the list (so that each element is done the same) and then specifically update each elements value by mapping again just the value of the specified element however in trying to map just the specific value through: the function, the specific element and the entire list I keep getting complaints that I'm inferring the list of values made from the 'map function p@list list' rather than simply giving the value at p@list. Is this the correct method to try to update a list against the entire list itself? EDIT: spelling mistakes and grammar

• ANDing javascript objects together

- by Jonas
I ran across this chunk of code (modified) in our application, and am confused to how it works: function someObject() { this.someProperty = {}; this.foo = { bar: { baz: function() { return "Huh?" } } }; this.getValue = function() { return (this.someProperty && this.foo.bar && this.foo.bar.baz && this.foo.bar.baz()) || null; } } function test() { var o = new someObject(); var val = o.getValue(); alert(val); } when you call the test() function, the text "Huh?" is alerted. I'm not sure how the result of getValue is returning that, I would've thought doing A && B && C && D would have returned true, rather than the value of D.

• Scoping inside Javascript anonymous functions

- by DCD
I am trying to make a function return data from an ajax call that I can then use. The issue is the function itself is called by many objects, e.g.: function ajax_submit (obj) { var id = $(obj).attr('id'); var message = escape ($("#"+id+" .s_post").val ()); var submit_string = "action=post_message&message="+message; $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: document.location, data: submit_string, success: function(html, obj) { alert (html); } }); return false; } Which means that inside the anonymous 'success' function I have no way of knowing what the calling obj (or id) actually are. The only way I can think of doing it is to attach id to document but that just seems a bit too crude. Is there another way of doing this?

• jquery plugin with multiple functions

- by tcurdt
According to the developer documentation jquery plugins are supposed to have only one namespace for all functions they make available. Which is straight forward as long as you only expose a single function per context (static/element). (function($){ var state_a = 0, $.myplugin = function(in_options) { // static return this; } $.fn.myplugin = function(in_options) { // element return this; } })(jQuery); This makes calls like this possible: $("elem").myplugin(options); jQuery.myplugin(options); What's the best approach if you have more than one function and need to share state? I would like to call into my plugin like this: $("elem").myplugin.start(options); $("elem").myplugin.stop(); jQuery.myplugin.start(options); jQuery.myplugin.stop();

• jQuery - Add click event to Div and go to first link found

- by LuckyShot
Hi guys, I think I've been too much time looking at this function and just got stuck trying to figure out the nice clean way to do it. It's a jQuery function that adds a click event to any div with a click CSS class found in the page and when clicked it redirects the user to the first link found in the div. function clickabledivs() { $('.click').each( function (intIndex) { $(this).bind("click", function(){ window.location = $( "#"+$(this).attr('id')+" a:first-child" ).attr('href'); }); } ); } The code simply works although I'm pretty sure there is a fairly better way to accomplish it, specially the selector I am using: $( "#"+$(this).attr('id')+" a:first-child" ) looks too long and slow. Any ideas? Please let me know if you need more details. Thanks! PS: I've got some jQuery benchmarking reference from Project2k.de here: http://blog.projekt2k.de/2010/01/benchmarking-jquery-1-4/

• Flexible argument list in LibreOffice Calc Macro

- by Patru
I want to write a function that geometrically links performance data which is usually provided as percentages, so the function will basically return (1+a)*(1+b)*(1+c)* … *(1+x)-1 This should be done using LibreOffice-calc and it should behave similarly to the regular sum function. As you may throw any number of arguments at sum I would like to be able to do the same with my alternative geoSum function but I am unable to find suitable documentation on handling a variable number of arguments with variable types (i.e. an arbitrary mix of numbers, cells and ranges). How would I have to specify the arguments to my LibreOffice-Basic function and how would I have to interpret it?

• How invoke live method with arguments

- by dorelal
I am learning how to write jQuery plugin. So why I am doing what I am doing does not matter. I writing a plugin called live2 which does nothing else but internally calls live method. (function($) { $.fn.live2 = function() { /* if there are no elements then just return */ if (!this.length) return this; return this.each(function() { var $this = $(this); jQuery.fn.live.apply(this, arguments); }); // end of return this.each(function()) }; // end of plugin })(jQuery); Above code should be invoked just live any live method. Instead of live use live2. $('#container').live2('click',function(){ return false; }) But the plugin is not working. Any idea what the fix should be.
