• waiting for 2 different events in a single thread

  component A (in C++) - is blocked waiting for alarm signals (not relevant) and IO signals (1 udp socket). has one handler for each of these. component B (java) - has to receive the same information the component A udp socket receives. periodicaly gives instructions that should be sent through component A udp socket. How to join both components? it is strongly desirable that: the changes to attach component B to component A are minimal (its not my code and it is not very pleasent to mess with). the time taken by the new operations (usually communicating with component B) interfere very little with the usual processing time of component A - this means that if the operations are going to take a "some" time I would rather use a thread or something to do them. note: since component A receives udp packets more frequently that it has component B instructions to forward, if necessary, it can only forward the instructions (when available) from the IO handler. my initial ideia was to develop a component C (in C++) that would sit inside the component A code (is this called an adapter?) that when instanciated starts the java process and makes the necessary connections (that not so little overhead in the initialization is not a problem). It would have 2 stacks, one for the data to give component B (lets call it Bstack) and for the data to give component A (lets call it Astack). It would sit on its thread (lets call it new-thread) waiting for data to be available in Bstack to send it over udp, and listen on the udp socket to put data on the Astack. This means that the changes to component A are only: when it receives a new UDP packet put it on the Bstack, and if there is something on the Astack sent it over its UDP socket (I decided for this because this socket would only be used in the main thread). One of the problems is that I don't know how to wait for both of these events at the same time using only one thread. so my questions are: Do I really need to use the main thread to send the data over component A socket or can I do it from the new-thread? (I think the answer is no, but I'm not sure about race conditions on sockets) how to I wait for both events? boost::condition_variable or something similar seems the solution in the case of the stack and boost::asio::io_service io_service.run() seems like the thing to use for the socket. Is there any other alternative solution for this problem that I'm not aware of? Thanks for reading this long text but I really wanted you to understand the problem.

• z-index not working in IE8 with the sortable jQuery plugin

  I'm working with the jQuery Sortable plugin to drag and drop images from one box to another box. This works fine in ff,chrome and safari but it fails in IE8. It seems that when you start dragging that the image is send to the back. I've tried to solve this by adding the z-index option to the sortable plugin, i've tried appending it to a node higher in the hierarchy (body). It appears that setting a z-index on every other item in the page would fix this, haven't tried it yet and i'm not planning on doing this because this would mess up alot. • SQL Native Client 10 Performance miserable (due to server-side cursors)

  we have an application that uses ODBC via CDatabase/CRecordset in MFC (VS2010). We have two backends implemented. MSSQL and MySQL. Now, when we use MSSQL (with the Native Client 10.0), retrieving records with SELECT is dramatically slow via slow links (VPN, for example). The MySQL ODBC driver does not exhibit this nasty behavior. For example: CRecordset r(&m_db); r.Open(CRecordset::snapshot, L"SELECT a.something, b.sthelse FROM TableA AS a LEFT JOIN TableB AS b ON a.ID=b.Ref"); r.MoveFirst(); while(!r.IsEOF()) { // Retrieve CString strData; crs.GetFieldValue(L"a.something", strData); crs.MoveNext(); } Now, with the MySQL driver, everything runs as it should. The query is returned, and everything is lightning fast. However, with the MSSQL Native Client, things slow down, because on every MoveNext(), the driver communicates with the server. I think it is due to server-side cursors, but I didn't find a way to disable them. I have tried using: ::SQLSetConnectAttr(m_db.m_hdbc, SQL_ATTR_ODBC_CURSORS, SQL_CUR_USE_ODBC, SQL_IS_INTEGER); But this didn't help either. There are still long-running exec's to sp_cursorfetch() et al in SQL Profiler. I have also tried a small reference project with SQLAPI and bulk fetch, but that hangs in FetchNext() for a long time, too (even if there is only one record in the resultset). This however only happens on queries with LEFT JOINS, table-valued functions, etc. Note that the query doesn't take that long - executing the same SQL via SQL Studio over the same connection returns in a reasonable time. Question1: Is is possible to somehow get the native client to "cache" all results locally use local cursors in a similar fashion as the MySQL driver seems to do it? Maybe this is the wrong approach altogether, but I'm not sure how else to do this. All we want is to retrieve all data at once from a SELECT, then never talk the server again until the next query. We don't care about recordset updates, deletes, etc or any of that nonsense. We only want to retrieve data. We take that recordset, get all the data, and delete it. Question2: Is there a more efficient way to just retrieve data in MFC with ODBC?

  Hello so I have been trying to get my website to run on mono (on ubuntu server) and I have followed these tutorials almost to the letter: However when my directory is not blank fastcgi logs reveal this: Notice Beginning to receive records on connection. I am not really sure what this means, and depending on what I do I can get another error that tells me the resource cannot be found: The resource cannot be found. Description: HTTP 404. • Fast response on first Socket I/O request but slow every other time when communicating with remote serial port

  I'm using sockets to pass Serial commands to a remote device. And the response to that request is sent back and printed out. However, I am having a problem in that the first time it is instant but the rest of the time it can take up to 20 seconds to receive a reply. What I'd like to do is take a call to the API, and record it somehow, so that I can return that recorded value to the code under test without actually calling the API. The returned structures cannot simply be memcpy'd, because they often contain inner pointers (pointers to other locations in the same buffer). The library in question would need to check for these kinds of things, and be able to restore pointer values to a similar buffer upon replay. (i.e. check each pointer sized value if it could be interpreted as a pointer within the buffer, change that to an offset, and remember to change it back to a pointer on replay -- a false positive rate here is acceptable) Is there anything out there that does anything like this?

• JPA Database strcture for internationalisation

  I am trying to get a JPA implementation of a simple approach to internationalisation. I want to have a table of translated strings that I can reference in multiple fields in multiple tables. So all text occurrences in all tables will be replaced by a reference to the translated strings table. In combination with a language id, this would give a unique row in the translated strings table for that particular field. For example, consider a schema that has entities Course and Module as follows :- Course int course_id, int name, int description Module int module_id, int name The course.name, course.description and module.name are all referencing the id field of the translated strings table :- TranslatedString int id, String lang, String content That all seems simple enough. I get one table for all strings that could be internationalised and that table is used across all the other tables. How might I do this in JPA, using eclipselink 2.4? I've looked at embedded ElementCollection, ala this... JPA 2.0: Mapping a Map - it isn't exactly what i'm after cos it looks like it is relating the translated strings table to the pk of the owning table. This means I can only have one translatable string field per entity (unless I add new join columns into the translatable strings table, which defeats the point, its the opposite of what I am trying to do). I'm also not clear on how this would work across entites, presumably the id of each entity would have to use a database wide sequence to ensure uniqueness of the translatable strings table. BTW, I tried the example as laid out in that link and it didn't work for me - as soon as the entity had a localizedString map added, persisting it caused the client side to bomb but no obvious error on the server side and nothing persisted in the DB :S I been around the houses on this about 9 hours so far, I've looked at this Internationalization with Hibernate which appears to be trying to do the same thing as the link above (without the table definitions it hard to see what he achieved). Any help would be gratefully achieved at this point... Edit 1 - re AMS anwser below, I'm not sure that really addresses the issue. In his example it leaves the storing of the description text to some other process. The idea of this type of approach is that the entity object takes the text and locale and this (somehow!) ends up in the translatable strings table. In the first link I gave, the guy is attempting to do this by using an embedded map, which I feel is the right approach. His way though has two issues - one it doesn't seem to work! and two if it did work, it is storing the FK in the embedded table instead of the other way round (I think, I can't get it to run so I can't see exactly how it persists). I suspect the correct approach ends up with a map reference in place of each text that needs translating (the map being locale-content), but I can't see how to do this in a way that allows for multiple maps in one entity (without having corresponding multiple columns in the translatable strings table)...

• Why isn't my div scrolling horizontally when adding multiple images?

  I have an outer div, and inside of that, I have an inner div which contains a list of images. When the images are wider than the outer div, I want to have it scroll horizontally, but instead, it just puts the image on the next line instead of expanding. If I add many rows, the div does scroll vertically, but horizontally, it doesn't do it. This happens on every browser I've tried - Firefox, Chrome, IE, and Safari. • How to query across many-to-many association in NHibernate?

  I have two entities, Post and Tag. The Post entity has a collection of Tags which represents a many-to-many join between the two (that is, each post can have any number of tags and each tag can be associated with any number of posts). I am trying to retrieve all Posts which have a given tag. However, I seem to be unable to get this query right. I essentially want something which means the same as the following pseudo-HQL: from Posts p where p.Tags contains (from Tags t where t.Name = :tagName) order by p.DateTime The only thing I've found which even approaches this is a post by Ayende. However, his approach requires the entity on the other side (in my case, Tag) to have a collection showing the other end of the many-to-many. I don't have this and don't really wish to have it. I find it hard to believe this can't be done. What am I missing?   First, Python Newbie; be patient/kind. Next, once a month I receive a large text file (think 7 Million records) to test for duplicate values. This is catalog information. I get 7 fields, but the two I'm interested in are a supplier code and a full orderable part number. To determine if the record is dupliacted, I compress all special characters from the part number (except . and #) and create a compressed part number. The test for duplicates becomes the supplier code and compressed part number combination. This part is fairly straight forward. Currently, I am just copying the original file with 2 new columns (compressed part and duplicate indicator). If the part is a duplicate, I put a "YES" in the last field. Now that this is done, I want to be able to go back (or better yet, at the same time) to get the previous record where there was a supplier code/compressed part number match. • MySQL multiple dependent subqueries, painfully slow

  I have a working query that retrieves the data that I need, but unfortunately it is painfully slow (runs over 3 minutes). I have indexes in place, but I think the problem is the multiple dependent subqueries. I've been trying to rewrite the query using joins but I can't seem to get it to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The tables: Basically, I have 2 tables. The first (prices) holds the prices of items in a store. Each row is the price of an item that day, and new rows are added every day with an updated price. The second table (watches_US) holds the item information (name, description, etc). I don't know a lot about deployment environments or anything like that so please forgive my ignorance.   I am getting lot of errors for HttpRequestValidationException in my event log. Is it possible to HTMLEncode all the inputs from override of ProcessRequest on web page. I have tried this but it gives context.Request.InputStream.CanWrite == false always. • RadioGroup onCheckedChanged function won't fire

  First time/long time. My app keeps track of restaurant servers' shift sales to help them budget. In the activity that displays past shifts, I've created a RadioGroup under the ListView so the server can choose lunch, dinner, or both. I've implemented RadioGroup.onCheckedChangeListener, but onCheckChanged never gets called. I also tried an anonymous inner class as listener, same result. I tried to copy/modify code from this answer: http://stackoverflow.com/a/9595528 ...but when I added the @Override to the callback function, the Eclipse compiler gave me an error (not warning) that the method must override a superclass, and the quick fix was to remove the override. I'm pretty sure the signatures are correct, as they were made with Eclipse's autocomplete and implement methods facilities. I then followed instructions to move my java compiler from 1.5 to 1.6, and none of the above listed behavior seemed to change.
