  • How should I refactor switch statements like this (Switching on type) to be more OO?

    I'm seeing some code like this in our code base, and want to refactor it: (Typescript psuedocode follows): class EntityManager{ private findEntityForServerObject(entityType:string, serverObject:any):IEntity { var existingEntity:IEntity = null; switch(entityType) { case Types.UserSetting: existingEntity = this.getUserSettingByUserIdAndSettingName(serverObject.user_id, serverObject.setting_name); break; case Types.Bar: existingEntity = this.getBarByUserIdAndId(serverObject.user_id, serverObject.id); break; //Lots more case statements here... } return existingEntity; } } The downsides of switching on type are self-explanatory. Normally, when switching behavior based on type, I try to push the behavior into subclasses so that I can reduce this to a single method call, and let polymorphism take care of the rest. However, the following two things are giving me pause: 1) I don't want to couple the serverObject with the class that is storing all of these objects. It doesn't know where to look for entities of a certain type. And unfortunately, the identity of a type of ServerObject varies with the type of ServerObject. (So sometimes it's just an ID, other times it's a combination of an id and a uniquely identifying string, etc). And this behavior doesn't belong down there on those subclasses. It is the responsibility of the EntityManager and its delegates. 2) In this case, I can't modify the ServerObject classes since they're plain old data objects. It should be mentioned that I've got other instances of the above method that take a parameter like "IEntity" and proceed to do almost the same thing (but slightly modify the name of the methods they're calling to get the identity of the entity). So, we might have: case Types.Bar: existingEntity = this.getBarByUserIdAndId(entity.getUserId(), entity.getId()); break; So in that case, I can change the entity interface and subclasses, but this isn't behavior that belongs in that class. So, I think that points me to some sort of map. So eventually I will call: private findEntityForServerObject(entityType:string, serverObject:any):IEntity { return aMapOfSomeSort[entityType].findByServerObject(serverObject); } private findEntityForEntity(someEntity:IEntity):IEntity { return aMapOfSomeSort[someEntity.entityType].findByEntity(someEntity); } Which means I need to register some sort of strategy classes/functions at runtime with this map. And again, I darn well better remember to register one for each my my types, or I'll get a runtime exception. Is there a better way to refactor this? I feel like I'm missing something really obvious here.

    I'm doing work that involves writing code and managing developers in a "special projects" division of a large company. I'd like to define my role better and figure out if there's an industry standard term for what I do, so that it will be easier for me to research best practices and work on a career path What I do all day: A macro that connects an Excel sheet to an Access database is acting funny; I get called in to figure out what's happening and debug it. Someone needs data extracted from a bunch of files on Sharepoint. I figure out a client-side solution because I'm not authorized to do anything server-side and getting IT to do anything would take several months and need a business case. A manager wants a new data entry tool for their team. I interview the manager and team members to work out the functional requirements, then design/develop/test the application. Someone needs a VBA script to crunch some data for their presentation that's due in two hours. I drop everything I'm doing to hack out a quick script and run the analysis, without much in the way of testing. A developer has been hired to build a database for one of the teams, since I'm working on too many different things and don't have time to take this project on in the timeframe required. I direct his work and push him to meet certain deadlines, interview stakeholders to get more info that will help him figure out how to build the necessary forms, and modify the functional requirements of the database to fit in the timeframe. Someone wants to load a set of data into a GIS system and set up an ongoing refresh and reporting of this data set. I facilitate the conversation between the GIS developers and the owners of this data set, and design a demo application as proof of concept. It's kind of an "all-purpose programming and IT management" position, but it's not officially IT because the company has an actual IT department with a rigorously defined system of submitting requests, developing code, and managing projects. What I do, I guess, is more of a handyman job, where stuff falls to me because I'm the geekiest one in the room. Is there a standard term in the software world for what I do?

  • Want to use something like Citrix XenClient, Free Alternative?

    I'm looking to go into IT, general office server management, and it looks like XenClient would be a awesome tool to use. If I get it right, you would store a central image of the OS you want to deploy (in an iso file) on the main server. Then use XenClient to pull that image down to the client, and it will then boot the OS inside of the virtual machine. Does it download the image of the OS and store it locally (like cloning the VM onto the client?) I'd love to find a free (possibly open source?) alternative to this, I keep on hearing about KVM in Linux and PXE booting a minimalistic OS to use remote KVMs.... Would that be what I'm looking for? Ideally, I'd like a system.. - That allows me to manage one central image for multiple clients (virtualized hardware) - Easily push a new VM onto the client for easy updating. - Be able to keep files in sync (but that might be a samba / active directory's job) Would those things be possible with some kind of free alternative? Some guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, I migrated a site from IIS6 to Windows Server 2008 R2 IIS7.5. It has an asmx web service, which is working fine locally, but returns this 500 error when called from another machine: Request format is unrecognized for URL unexpectedly ending in /myMethodName The solution in previous versions is to add this to the web.config for the protocols needed (typically omitting HttpGet for production): <system.web> <webServices> <protocols> <add name="HttpGet" /> <add name="HttpPost" /> <add name="HttpSoap" /> </protocols> </webServices> </system.web> This is posted everywhere, including http://stackoverflow.com/questions/657313/request-format-is-unrecognized-for-url-unexpectedly-ending-in For IIS7.5, this throws a configuration error; I understand this section doesn't belong, but tried it anyway. I also boiled down the asmx call to a simple hello world. I tested with POST also, just to eliminate any issues with GET. What is the equivalent for IIS7.5? - either web.config format or the UI button to push would be really helpful. Thanks, Bob

I brought a whole new mac mini as I am an iPhone developer - I prefer to use it. But most of my family members are not used to with mac osx. They don't know how to operate os x. Managing files Opening documents Browser & many many other issues. It's not their age to learn more, people like us ( computer geek ) can easily get into new systems. I had many attempted efforts to teach them for all these above topics in windows. Summary, Of all these, I know how to use mac, but they don't know. They stair like I am making private & bad usage of mac. In short, I just want to install windows. So, that they can feel that mac mini is for all members not for just me. Original Question Dual Boot windows & os x on mac mini ? Is it possible ? How ? Does it void warranties of apple ?

UserInfo=0x7f9e6cb3e180 {NSLocalizedDescription=Authentication server encountered an error while attempting the requested operation., NSLocalizedFailureReason=Authentication server encountered an error while attempting the requested operation.}, Authentication server encountered an error while attempting the requested operation. I've joined (bound) Ubuntu Linux clients to the same domain with net ads join in the past with no problems (using the same administrative user). I don't have access to any server logs. Here's the GUI error (from Directory Utility) on the OS X client: Here's the GUI error (from User's and Groups) in System Preferences on the OS X client: Update After some Wiresharking I've got some more info: OS X Client - KDC (over UDP): AS_REQ (no padata) OS X Client <- KDC (over UDP): KRB5KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_REQUIRED OS X Client - KDC (over UDP): AS_REQ (this time with PA-ENC-TIMESTAMP in padata) OS X Client <- KDC (over UDP): KRB5KDC_ERR_RESPONSE_TOO_BIG OS X Client - KDC (over TCP): AS_REQ (also with PA-ENC-TIMESTAMP in padata) OS X Client <- KDC (over TCP): KDC_ERR_ETYPE_NOSUPP ...and that's it. This is what I think is going on: The OS X client sends a kerberos request. The KDC says, "You need to pre-authenticate. Try again" The OS X client tries to pre-authenticate (all this so far is over UDP) Something gets lost on our network and the KDC says, "Oops something went wrong" The OS X client switches to TCP and tries again. Over TCP, the KDC says, "You're using an encryption type I don't support" Note that in its padata records, the OS X client is always using "aes256-cts-hmac-sha1-96" as its encryption type. However, in its KDC_REQ_BODY record it lists the aes256-cts-hmac-sha1-96, aes128-cts-hmac-sha1-96, des3-cbc-sha1, and rc4-hmac encryption types. When the KDC comes back with KDC_ERR_ETYPE_NOSUPP, it uses rc4-hmac as its encryption type in its padata record. I know next to nothing about Kerberos, but it seems to me that the OS X client should go ahead and try the rc4-hmac encryption type. However, it does nothing after this.     Hello I have a Mac mini using OS X 10.5.8. Recently I've been having problems that are becoming increasingly severe. Particular symptoms: Firefox "quits" but the dot on the dock remains. If I try shutting down at this point I can't and have to use the power button. I can't start Firefox either. Significantly higher than normal crash rate for CS4 Illustrator Photoshop and Dreamweaver. If Firefox remains open when sleeping the Mac, on waking up firefox is completely unresponsive and must be restarted. Can cause problem 1. Today I lost all my FTP settings for Dreamweaver CS4 Bluetooth switches on when booting despite being switched off. Network password retention is somewhat erractic. Tried running Apple Hardware Test as described in the manual. Cannot access install disk by pressing D at startup. My pen tablet (Bamboo) lost my preferences. Tried unstalling software and now cannot re-install. I've never had problems of this level outside warranty before so I don't know much about debugging Macs. Solutions attempted: Disable bluetooth (see problem 5) Disable time machine Run appple harware test (see problem 7) Tried using activity monitor but don't know which processes are normal Tried uninstalling more recent software. I don't have any idea what to do. It seems like a hard disk failure but I don't have the know how to continue.

  • OSX esc key stops working (randomly)

    I have a 2011 macbook Air with OS X Mountain Lion (I've upgraded from Lion). And ever since upgrading my escape key randomly stops working. And it's not that the keyboard on the laptop would be damaged as the same happens if I use apple's bluetooth keyboard. So I'm guessing it's a software issue. Also in some cases pressing ctrl+esc achieves the same thing as just esc so I'm 100% it's not a hardware problem. Does anybody have any idea what this might be all about and how to fix it? edit: the escape key stops working completely but it starts working again after I restart the computer. edit2: this usually happens after the computer wakes from sleep. So it's not like that is just stopps working in the middle of using it, but rather after I put it to sleep (or just close the lid) and then open it again. Has nobody got the same issue? Is there a better place to ask OSX related questions than SuperUser maybe?

Installed MySQL 5.1.45 x86_64.   • Legacy non-dpi-aware application resolution scaling?

    Our environment prominently featuers an outdated but absolutely mission-critical Win32 application that is not dpi-aware. It is optimized for an 800x600 display. Most of our users now have 17"-20" displays with native resolutions ranging from 1280x1024 to 1680x1050. However, they still operate these displays at 800x600 because the text in this legacy application is otherwise too small. Of course, it also means that nothing quite fits on the screen in Office 2007. Most of our workstations still run Windows XP, but some are on Windows 7 and there are more to come. About one-third of our users run the app remotely via MS Terminal Services, and the remainder run it locally. Is anyone aware of any method that could be used to scale this specific application to about 170%, so that it would fill a 1280x1024 screen, without affecting other applications that work best at the display's native resolution? I know how to do this in Mac OS X, but I have never found a way to do it in Windows. Of course, this ideally would be something that we could push out via Group Policy. I suppose we even could create a custom MSI package to re-deploy the legacy application with some sort of display virtualization layer, if such a thing exists.

  • Exchange 2003 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controllers

    I'm looking at adding two Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controllers into our Windows Server 2003 domain to support our Exchange 2003 SP2 server and replace a retiring Windows Server 2003 Server. Our Domain and Forest functional levels are currently Windows Server 2003, which supports domain controller operating systems (Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003) according to the "Appendix of Functional Level Features" on Technet . So there should not be an issue other than running adprep /forestprep and adprep /domain.... right!? But, according to the Exchange Server Supportability Matrix, Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory Servers are not supported as global catalog servers or domain controllers in a Exchange 2003 SP2 environment!!!??? This was a shock to me... How can Windows Server 2008 R2 be a DC for a Windows Server 2003 domain and forest, but not communicate with an Exchange 2003 SP2 server? Hopefully, I'm not the first to see this issue (or maybe I am), but I know a lot of Exchange 2003 admins will not be happy if there is not a work around... or is Microsoft trying to push everyone automatically to Exchange 2010...

  • Intel Wireless 4965AGN not achieving N throughput when connected to an Airport Express N network

    I have an Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN adaptor in my laptop (HP Pavillion dv2000 series) which is connecting to a 5Ghz-only 802.11n network provided by an Apple Airport Express. The network is using WPA2 encryption. My desktop is also connected the Airport, via a Linksys WUSB600N USB adaptor. Both are running with the latest drivers, and the Airport is running the latest firmware. The Airport is also configured to use wide channels. The problem I have is that I never get throughput above 4MB/s when transferring files between the two machines. Even a pessimistic calculation shows a 270Mbps network as being capable of transfer rates at well above 10MB/s. I'm pretty sure I've isolated the issue to being the Intel adaptor, as wiring the desktop to the AP, and using the Linksys adaptor on the laptop immediately yielded speeds limited by the 100MB/s ethernet connection. I know that 802.11n is still a draft standard, and so mixing kit from different manufacturers can easily lead to poor results, but I was just wondering if anybody else out there has had success with this Intel adaptor on an N network? Or even better, connecting it to an Airport Express? Can anybody give me any advice on how to troubleshoot this issue? I should also mention that the Airport Express doesn't allow you to manually specify channels when running in N mode, and that I've been able to rule out interference from other Wireless LANs by scanning. There aren't any other 5GHz networks in my area. All ideas welcome! Update: A while later, I've just updated to the most recent drivers for both the Intel chip in the laptop, and the USB adaptor. Unfortunately this hasn't improved things :(. If anybody has any advice it would be be gratefully received.

  • setting up synergy (multi-computer shared input devices) new to mac

    I've just gotten a mac and the first thing I'm trying to do in setting it up for dev is to set-up synergy. I've run into countless issues, and am making progress, but that 'mac's just work' theory is getting tired really fast. I'd prefer running the mac as the server, as it's a desktop. why use my pc(laptop) as the server. So i downloaded synergy, and tried to edit the 'synergy.conf' file. First with textmate, then with apple script. Neither of these applications will open the file. Even after changing textmate to use plain text format and switching off a few other things to make it into a plain text editor. No good. Uh, isn't that what these script/text editors are for? Then I found SyneryKM which is a package to run synergy on osx. Took LOTS of fiddling, but I think I finally kinda got it figured out. I've got my pc & mac both running synergy. However, my pc will only connect to synergy using the ip address. No problem, however, my mac won't connect to itself as a synergy server using the IP address. If I use the ip address as a screen in the 'server configuration file', i get a 'Error: unknown screen name mymac'. I know this shouldn't be super complicated, and possibly not the place to find answers about synergy, but I couldn't find a better place, and there has been some talk of synergy here. Any chance somebody can help with this?

  • Syncing Music Everywhere with Google Music and iTunes Match - Will This Work?

    I have the following devices: Personal Laptop running Windows 7/Ubuntu 11.10 (mostly use Ubuntu) Media Server running Windows 7 with PS3 Media Server and iTunes Work Laptop running OSX Snow Leopard iPad iPhone 4S The iPhone just replaced my Droid 2 Global. What I had been doing was using Google Music to watch the folders iTunes was storing music in and moving any new files up to Google Music. The Droid would pull music down from the cloud via streaming or me telling it to make it available offline, I had folders set up with PS3 Media Server to stream them to TV's via DLNA, and used RDP to play music through my speakers in the office. So far it's worked well. Since I've replaced the Droid 2 though with an iPhone, I've lost the syncing ability with Google Music and have to do it via iTunes (I knew this would happen, no big suprise). I got to thinking though - Apple does offer iTunes Match, which allows your devices to stream/download the music from 'the cloud,' much like Google Music. I could then listen to whatever I Wanted (for the most part) on my phone, iPad, and laptops by syncing via iTunes Match. I don't want to loose my MP3s though, and since I've never used iTunes Match, I wonder if the following is a viable solution: Sign up for iTunes Match on my media server Let it scan my library and make available my songs in AAC in the cloud Not delete the media server MP3s Set up other devices to sync to iTunes Match Continue to get MP3s via Amazon or other services and add to iTunes Let the MP3s sync to Google Music, and let the MP3's add to the AAC versions on my devices I think the main kicker is I don't want to lose the MP3 versions of my songs as those will work just fine on all my devices and I generally rip at 320kbps. I don't mind spending $25/year if it means that I can easily shift the music from device to device without much thinking, but I'm not going to pay $25/year to end up converting my library over to AAC just to save myself the hassle of manually syncing my iPad and iPhone.

  • How do I enable the confluence-users group?

    I've got an issue with Atlassian Confluence. Normal users can't log in, but administrators can... Details below! I manage users using an Apple Open Directory (LDAP). I created two groups: "confluence-administrators" and "confluence-users". I've added team leaders and managers to both groups, and I've added some users to "confluence-users". Everyone in "confluence-administrators" can log in easily. People in "confluence-users" can't log in at all. When I look at the user list (in Confluence), and select a user to examine the list of groups he or she belongs to, I can see that the Confluence Administrators are indeed members of the "confluence-administrators" group, but not a single user is a member of the "confluence-users" group. Not event the Confluence Administrators, which are members of both groups! So I tried to have one of the "confluence-users" log in while watching the Confluence logs. Some things I don't think are part of the problem: I've synchronized Confluence with LDAP many, many times. I have verified many times that I didn't make a typo while setting the groups on the LDAP server. LDAP synchronization goes well. No errors in the logs (only INFO level log messages). The user exists. Errors in the logs are different when a user doesn't exist. Any help is most welcome!

Background: It's not as easy as Internet Options. Years ago my network had a mandatory HTTP proxy at 172.31.1.1:8080. When we switched to the 192.168.1/24 space and eliminated the proxy, this user's iTunes -- the only iTunes user at the time -- could no longer contact the iTunes Store, an operation which fails with "unknown error -9808". This has been the case through several iTunes.exe upgrades over the years and prevents, among other things, activation of a new or newly upgraded iPhone. wireshark and TCPView confirm that this user's iTunes.exe is attempting to contact the long-defunct http proxy when attempting to reach the iTunes Store, but is otherwise unproxied. Curious details: No other iTunes.exe HTTP traffic for this user is affected -- iTunes can successfully make HTTP chatter at Apple's servers. No other web traffic at all is proxied, whether this user or others, iTunes or browser, etc. I cannot find the spurious proxy setting anywhere in the registry nor on disk, though perhaps I haven't thought of every place to look and every format to look for. Other users who have experienced the same error code all seem to have unrelated web configuration problems (certificate validation, for example). UPDATE in response to Phoshi's excellent suggestion, reinstallation hasn't done the trick.

  • Advice needed: ADSL and VPN for a small company

    Hi. I need advice on purchasing an ADSL modem/router for a small company. At the moment, we are using the iBurst Wireless service for internet connectivity. I have the iBurst desktop modem, which connects to my Netgear WNR2000 router via ethernet. I am using the Netgear WNR2000 to deploy a wireless network as well. I have also set up a VPN using Windows Server 2003, and enabled the VPN Passthrough settings on the Netgear router. I am able to connect to the office network remotely without difficulty. However the problem that I've read is that the Netgear WNR2000 only supports VPN passthrough for a single session. This is simply not good enough. I need to be able to support at least 3 concurrent VPN connections immediately, and up to 5 in the near future. Now I am cancelling my iBurst Wireless service and have just got my ADSL line installed. I have to purchase an ADSL modem, and now is a good time to think of future proofing my investment. I need a good ADSL modem, that will allow me to support at least 5 concurrent VPN connections, or more, without breaking the bank. My budget is about 150-200 USD. I believe that my current Netgear WNR2000 router will be useless, except maybe to extend my wireless network in the future by a bit. Is there a solution where I can still use my Netgear WNR2000 for WiFi, for e.g., by connecting a cheaper non-WiFi ADSL modem to the Netgear router? If not, then which WiFi-enabled ADSL modem/router that supports at least 5 VPN passthroughs can you recommend? To sum it up, I need an ADSL modem/router that is: ADSL & ADSL2+ compatible has built-in 802.11n 270/300mbps WiFi (if having this feature doesn't push the price up too much) supports at least 5 VPN connections using VPN passthrough EDIT: Answer 2.10 in the following FAQ has me a bit worried - What is VPN/multiple VPN Pass-through?

How do I check the box to allow Remote desktop access from the RemoteApp settings programmatically?     I'm using Asterisk 1.4 and am trying to work out a way to bring people into a conference call. In the ideal scenario two people would be talking and one of them would push some keys, then a phone number and then the three of them would be in a conference. From there they should be able to bring in other people as well. This seems to be what the Asterisk n-way call HOWTO is trying to do, but it doesn't work quite properly for me. Here's what happens: 1. Internal person A calls person B 2. Person A presses *0, he is given a dial tone and person B is taken to a conference room 3. Person A calls person C and they can talk, and then person A presses **. 4. Person C is brought to the conference room, but person A is disconnected. In the last step, A should be taken to the conference room as well. Here's the relevant logs, where 230 is person A, 231 is person B, 207 is person C, and 282 is the conference room.

  • IRC newbie needs detailed "How To" directions for freenode.net connection with OS X IRC app

    Newbie IRC user here. Trying to get connected on freenode.net, preferably with a native Mac OS X client (I'm running 10.6.8), or at least something with a good "OS X feel." Also seeking a client that comes "well regarded" in Mac community (eg, Linkinus reflects outstanding Apple App Store user ratings). Thus far have found it remarkably difficult to "get started from scratch" with ANY client. All attempted clients (Colloquy, Textual, Linkinus) experience some sort of "* Notice -- You need to identify via SASL to use this server" error. I see this freenode SASL-friendly client list; am I really limited to only these clients? This "IRC-freenode startup" procedure has been far more difficult than I had originally anticipated. Why can't I just do this and have it "just work"? Bottom line: looking for a "chapter and verse"/cookbook description of how to get started with freenode.net IRC chat rooms on Mac OS. Need reference to known-working client, and then exact directions on how to get connected to a chat room with a nickname.

  • Laptop choice for development: MacBook Pro 17 vs Dell Studio XPS 16 vs HP Envy 15

    Hey! First things first - let me state that I am not intending to play games on this - I have narrowed down to these 3 purely based on specs and its individual brand reliability in the market. I intend to primarily use: Visual Studio 2008 Pro a lot (develop and deploy on Windows platforms) SQL Server 2005 Oracle 10g Adobe Photoshop CS4 Microsoft Expression Studio Google Sketchup I currently use a desktop PC (Core2Duo 2.66Ghz with 3GB DDRII memory) running Vista Business 32-bit - and I have to admit that, especially for Visual Studio, its quite sluggish to a point where it affects productivity. Furthermore, I intend to only use the notebook on a table - with a cooled surface, like granite :) - so I would appreciate people's input with regard to heat issues. Im aware that the Dell's primary exhaust gets blocked by the lid when open, but some reviews don't seem to place extraordinary emphasis on heat issues resulting from this. My options for the Dell/Alienware: Core i7 720QM 4GB DDRIII memory ATI mobility 3670 (512) 128GB Solid State Drive 16-inch Full HD RGB-LED LCD display (1080p) 3-year next-business-day support My configuration for the Apple MBP: Core2Duo 2.8Ghz (Im assuming the T9600) 4GB DDRIII memory 128GB Solid State Drive standard 1 year support The one advantage I think of with the MBP is that I can have the addition of OSX (though Im unsure what I would use it for, but purely to play around with a much-boasted-about OS) What are your thoughts on this, especially regarding build-quality, heat, performance and battery-life?
