• SQL SELECT across two tables

  Hi there, I am a little confused as to how to approach this SQL query. I have two takes (equal number of records), and I would like to return a column with which is the division between the two. In other words, here is my not-working-correctly query: SELECT( (SELECT v FROM Table1) / (SELECT DotProduct FROM Table2) ); How would I do this? All I want it a column where each row equals the same row in Table1 divided by the same row in Table2. The resulting table should have the same number of rows, but I am getting something with a lot more rows than the original two tables. I am at a complete loss. Any advice?

• Visual Studio 2008 resolving wrong reference

  In my project file, I have the following entry: <Reference Include="Microsoft.Practices.Unity, Version=1.2.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35, processorArchitecture=MSIL"> <HintPath>..\..\..\..\Libraries\Microsoft.Practices.Unity.dll</HintPath> </Reference> which in absolute terms translates to: C:\dev\LUT600 2.1.1\OCC600\Libraries Somehow, when I try to compile the project, Visual Studio loads a reference from a totally different path: /reference:"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Enterprise Library 4.1 - October 2008\Bin\Microsoft.Practices.Unity.dll. How it resolves to this location is a complete mystery as this DLL is not referenced anywhere in this project. I have set Specific Verion to true but it still resolves the reference from this location. Any ideas? TIA. Klaus

• How can one put together multiple arrays into one string?

  I'm having a hard time describing what I'm looking for. If we pretend that we're pulling an array (I've used the .split to get user input data) where each line represents a link. How can I then add an anchor tagg to that link that I'm pulling? I need to be able to put < a href=" + thearray + "anything< /a. The reason for this is that I'm dynamically creating a list. I think that if I create two variables, one with this part < a href=" one with the closing and then call some sort of function that puts those two and the pulled array in between them until the list is complete. Does this make any sense?

  I have certain critical bash scripts that are invoked by code I don't control, and where I can't see their console output. I want a complete trace of what these scripts did for later analysis. To do this I want to make each script self-tracing.   I have developed windows service to process files whose records will be stored in database. When windows service finds a file it creates a thread and assigns each file to one thread. I have not used Thread Pool. I wanted to know when windows service is stopped, then how to identify how many threads are running and whether they are complete. If all the threads are executed then windows service can be stopped successfully. Otherwis windows service should wait until all threads are executed or aborted. How to implement this.

• Display Ajax Loader while page rendering

  This is probably a simple question but how can I best use an AJAX loader in ASP.NET to provide a loading dialog whilst the page is being built? I currently have an UpdatePanel with an associated UpdateProgressPanel which contains the loading message and gif in a ProgressTemplate. Currently I have a page that onLoad() goes and gets the business entities and then displays them. While it is doing this I would like to display an AJAX loader. Would it be better to have nothing in the page load and have a hidden button that is triggered onLoadComplete or unLoad() which would then wait for the button click method to complete displaying the UpdateProgressPanel?

• Speeding up jQuery empty() or replaceWith() Functions When Dealing with Large DOM Elements

  Let me start off by apologizing for not giving a code snippet. The project I'm working on is proprietary and I'm afraid I can't show exactly what I'm working on. However, I'll do my best to be descriptive. Here's a breakdown of what goes on in my application: User clicks a button Server retrieves a list of images in the form of a data-table Each row in the table contains 8 data-cells that in turn each contain one hyperlink Each request by the user can contain up to 50 rows (I can change this number if need be) That means the table contains upwards of 800 individual DOM elements My analysis shows that jQuery("#dataTable").empty() and jQuery("#dataTable).replaceWith(tableCloneObject) take up 97% of my overall processing time and take on average 4 - 6 seconds to complete. I'm looking for a way to speed up either of the above mentioned jQuery functions when dealing with massive DOM elements that need to be removed / replaced. I hope my explanation helps.

• Massive speed diff in upgrade to Java 7

  We use Java within our build process, as it is used to resolve/publish our dependencies via Ivy. No problem, nor have we had with it for 2 years, until we've tried to upgrade Java 6 Update 26 to Version 7 Update 7, whereas a build on a local developer PC (WinXP) now takes 2 hours to complete, instead of 10 minutes!! Nothing else has changed on the PC, making it the absolute target for our concerns. Does anyone know of any reason as to why version 7 of Java would make such a speed difference like this?

• When and why will an OS initialise memory to 0xCD, 0xDD, etc. on malloc/free/new/delete?

  I know that the OS will sometimes initialise memory with certain patterns such as 0xCD and 0xDD. What I want to know is when and why this happens. When Is this specific to the compiler used? Do malloc/new and free/delete work in the same way with regard to this? Is it platform specific? Will it occur on other operating systems, such as Linux or VxWorks? Why My understanding is this only occurs in Win32 debug configuration, and it is used to detect memory overruns and to help the compiler catch exceptions. Can you give any practical examples as to how this initialisation is useful? I remember reading something (maybe in Code Complete 2) that it is good to initialise memory to a known pattern when allocating it, and certain patterns will trigger interrupts in Win32 which will result in exceptions showing in the debugger. How portable is this?

• Chaining jQuery animations using recursion crashes browser

  Here's the basic idea of what I'm trying to do: Set the innerHTML of a DIV to some value X Animate the DIV When the animation finishes, change the value of X and repeat N times If I do this in a loop, what ends up happening is, because the animations occur asynchronously, the loop finishes and the DIV is set to its final value before the animations have had a chance to run for each value of X. As this question notes, the best way to solve this problem is to make a recursive call to the function in the callback handler for the animation. This way the value of the DIV doesn't change until the animation of the previous value is complete. This works perfectly...to a point. If I animate a bunch of these DIVs at the same time, my browser gets overwhelmed and crashes. Too much recursion. Can anyone think of a way to do this without using recursion?

  Hello! I have a webbrowser control in my program and what I want to do is to delete all the cookies stored in my computer. The problem is that for example I'm in some site, and then I decide I want to delete all the cookies, so I do it by the command "Kill()" but the problem is that the cookies remain and this site still can recognize me, and to complete the kill command I need to close my program and enter it again. The webbrowser control uses Internet Explorer, and I think when you enter IE it somehow loads all the cookies into it so if you delete your cookies, they remain there. So I'm wondering how can I delete my cookies, completely delete them without the need to close my program and enter it once again. Any help will be appreciated!

• Font-face, Raphael and IE8

  I am desesperatly trying to get some google font faces to work with Raphael (SVG / VML rendering JavaScript library) on IE8. At first i tried the google fonts code. My second try has been to download and convert the fonts to host my own more complete css. Now the fonts show in the html part of the page (inside a modified bootstrap nav dropdown), but it does not work in the VML canvas (generated by Raphael). • Can't get ajax - loaded image's height and width via jquery.

For some reason, this image height and width are off, it's astohugh the image hasn't fully loaded. Can someone help me out please?

  I want to adjust zsh so that I can tab complete: myprog <tab> using all *.foo files in ~/somedir, but have it so that it displays them without the .foo extension. Is there any way to do this? • Metadata file ... could not be found error when building projects

  Every time I start Visual Studio 2008, the first time I try to run the project I get the error CS0006 The metadata file ... could not be found. If I do a rebuild of the complete solution it works. Some information about the solution: I'm building in debug mode and Visual Studio complains about not finding dll:s in the release folder. The projects Visual Studio complains about are used by many other projects in the solution. I have changed the default output path of all projects to a ......\build\debug\ProjectName and ......\build\release\ProjectName respectively. (Just to get all build files in one directory) I have the same problem with a another solution. The solution was created from scratch. There are 9 projects in the solution. One WPF and 8 class libraries using dotnet 3.5. Any ideas on what is causing this problem?

• Simulating a mouse button click in Windows

  Hi everyone, I'm writing Remote Desktop clone in C++ using QT. So far I'm able to move the mouse cursor around fine. QT has a nice setPos function for that. However, I'm a bit lost as to what API/Library to use for simulating mouse button clicks. One method I'm aware of is to send the WM_(event) to a window using the window's HWND. However, I was hoping there was a more salient method for taking complete control over a mouse. Is there any other way to tell the operating system that the left mouse button has been clicked? • YUI Autocomplete: search after pasting?

  I'm using an auto-complete widget from YUI to implement live search as in the examples. However, it works fine when search text is typed in, but fails to work when the text is pasted into the field. Which would be the proper way to initiate an autocompletion on paste? Haven't found anything for that in the documentation... EDIT: Pasting is not Ctrl-V, it's usually "Paste" from the context-menu. YUI does react to a keypress, but doesn't if anything is pasted by the mouse.

• Can you have too many Delegate.BeginInvoke calls at once?

  I am cleaning up some old code converting it to work asynchronously. psDelegate.GetStops decStops = psLoadRetrieve.GetLoadStopsByLoadID; var arStops = decStops.BeginInvoke(loadID, null, null); WaitHandle.WaitAll(new WaitHandle[] { arStops.AsyncWaitHandle }); var stops = decStops.EndInvoke(arStops); Above is a single example of what I am doing for asynchronous work. My plan is to have close to 20 different delegates running. All will call BeginInvoke and wait until they are all complete before calling EndInvoke. My question is will having so many delegates running cause problems? I understand that BeginInvoke uses the ThreadPool to do work and that has a limit of 25 threads. 20 is under that limit but it is very likely that other parts of the system could be using any number of threads from the ThreadPool as well. Can the avoidance of premature optimization ever be taken too extreme that it does more harm than good? Even if it's rare, has there been a case of a real measurable software engineering disaster due to complete negligence to optimize early in the process? Bonus question: is software engineering pretty much the only field that has such a counter intuitive principle regarding doing something earlier rather than later before things potentially become too big a problem to fix? Personal question: how do you justify something as premature optimization and not just a case of you being lazy/ignorant/dumb?

• Ajax/PHP - should I use one long running script or polling?

  Hello, I have a PHP script that is kicked off via ajax. This PHP script uses exec() to run a separate PHP script via the shell. The script that is called via exec() may take 30 seconds or so to complete. I need to update the UI once it is finished. Which of these options is preferred? a) Leave the HTTP connection open for the 30 seconds and wait for it to finish. b) Have exec() run the PHP script in the background and then use ajax polling to check for completion (every 5 seconds or so). c) Something else that I haven't thought of.   I have a Web application (Flex 4 - Spring Blaze DS - Spring 3.0) which sends out an JMS event to a batch application (Standalone java) I am using JMS infrastrucure provided by Spring (spring JmsTemplate,SimpleMessageListenerContainer,MessageListenerAdapter) with TIBCO EMS. Is there any way by which we can notify a web user once message processing is completed by listener. One of the way to send a response event which will be listened by web application; but how to address following scenario: User1 click on submit - which in turn sends a JMS message Listener on receiving message processes the message (message processing may take 20-30 mins to complete). Listener application sends out another JMS event "Process_complete" As this is a web application; there are n users currently logged into the application. so how to identify a correct user / what if user is already logged off? Is there any way to handle this? Please post your views.
