  • no wifi after grub 2 crash

    on ubuntu 10.10 I used StartupManager to set windows 7 as the default boot, also chosen the 1024x768 resolution, 16 bit, time: 3sec, and checked "show splash screen". after the restart there was no GRUB menu at all, windows 7 booted, and in windows the clock was 0:03 instead of 10:03, also the wifi doesn't sees any connections anymore I reinstalled ubuntu 10.10 so the GRUB menu is back, changed the clock back from BIOS, but my wifi doesn't sees any connections in windows nor in ubuntu (I write this from another computer)

  • Launcher tooltip display issues

    I've just installed Ubuntu 12.04.1, and it seems that i have some issues with the launcher: if i hover the mouse on an icon, it shows an horizontal line instead of the icon's name. if i hover it again, then it will show me the correctly displayed name, in label and all. The thing is pretty annoying. First hover no label (just that line), second hover, label. Video drivers are installed ! Any thoughts? Thank you

    Hi forum, i have this file myfirst.txt located on a cluster of computers down the hall, i.e.: myname@login1:~> ls myfirst.txt which i want to download to the home directory: scp [email protected]:myfirst.txt . to which i get: myfirst.txt 100% 1828 1.8KB/s 00:00 now where (on my home computer) is this myfirst.txt file ? i can't find it.   • What Is .recently-used.xbel and How Do I Delete It for Good?

    If you’re reading this article, you’ve probably noticed the .recently-used.xbel file in the root of your User folder, and you’re wondering why it keeps constantly coming back even though you repeatedly delete it. So What Is It? The quick answer is that it’s part of the GTK+ library used by a number of cross-platform applications, perhaps the most well-known of which is the Pidgin instant messenger client. As the name implies, the file is used to store a list of the most recently used files. In the case of Pidgin, this comes into play when you are transferring files over IM, and that’s when the file will appear again. Note: this is actually a known and reported bug in Pidgin, but sadly the developers aren’t terribly responsive when it comes to annoyances. Pidgin seems to go for long periods of time without any updates, but we still use it because it’s open-source, cross-platform, and works well. How Do I Get Rid of It? Unfortunately, there’s no way to easily get rid of it, apart from using a different application. If you need to transfer files over Pidgin, the file is going to re-appear… but there’s a quick workaround! The general idea is to set the file properties to Hidden and Read-only. You’d think you could just set it to Hidden and be done with it, but Pidgin will re-create the file every time, so instead we’re leaving the file there and preventing it from being accessed. You could also totally remove access through the Security tab if you wanted to, but this worked fine for me… as you can see, no more file in the folder. Of course, you can’t have the show hidden files and folders option turned on, or the file will continue to show up. Want to get really geeky? You can toggle hidden files with a shortcut key.     gnome mplayer (gnome-mplayer) does not play video or dvd in expand or when the window is resized the video stay the same size and there is some kind of video error that is a picture of a previous frame of the video ,a small part is display and freezes undefined, unless is put back or not maximize. ..and the aspect of the video is the same 4:3 and do not change for example for 16:9 (and i think here is the error,not sure) other video displays not show this error not sure if is the rigth place do ask here

    Im building a portfolio website that uses full screen background images slideshow that are cropped to fit using a js plugin. To give the minimum amount of cropping whats the best ratio to make the images ? ie i know 13" macbooks are around 13:7 (when taking into account about 100px for the browser bar) but does that scale up on 15",24",17" displays ? I know there are charts showing the most common dimensions but they just show a range of sizes and thats categorized by groups rather than actual dimensions
