String is a reference type so when they developed C# they obviously had to use some way to get a string literal to the class. I just hope it's not hardcoded into the language.

• Creating same-width hit-zones on MenuItems in ASP.NET 2.0 Menus that include MenuItems added at runt

  In an ASP.NET 2.0 application, I want to permit a user to select a MenuItem, even if the user does not click the actual text of the MenuItem, but instead only clicks the highlight area that ASP.NET places around the currently selected MenuItem (represented by the DynamicHoverStyle.BackColor property). Since the BackColor is displayed the same width for each MenuItem in a submenu, based on MenuItem with the longest text, I would like to make the hit-zone (clickable area) of each sub-MenuItem the same width (same at the BackColor area), regardless of how much text is displayed in the in each individual sub-MenuItem. Here's the setup. I am using a Menu on a MasterPage to display a similar menu on each of my pages. Some of the pages suppress this menu, and some of them add addition MenuItems, sometimes to the top level, sometimes adding sub-MenuItems to an existing top-level MenuItem, and sometimes both (adding a MenuItem to the top level and then additional MenuItems as submenuitems to that newly added top level. This menu has a horizontal orientation, and it is dynamic, in that only the top level is initially exposed, and the submenus are displayed when selected. During usability testing, we noticed that users would select a top-level menu item to expose the submenu, and then select a submenu item, but not by necessarily clicking on the submenu item text, but instead clicking on the BackColor area of the submenu item. Since the text of some MenuItems are longer than others, MenuItems with short Text have a rather large BackColor area. When the user clicks on the BackColor area, but not directly on the MenuItem Text, nothing happens, since the user didn't actually click on the submenu item hit zone. Although there are visual cues as to what part of the displayed MenuItem is clickable (the mouse pointer changes to a link cursor when the mouse is positioned on the MenuItem Text, but not when it is only hovering over the BackColor), this behavior confused the users. They highlighted a MenuItem, and clicked it, but nothing happened. I would to make clicking a MenuItem successful, even if the user did not click on the actual Text of the MenuItem, but simply click on the BackColor area. It seems like there should be a property somewhere to control the width of the active area of the displayed MenuItems, but I do not see it. Any suggestions, given that I am creating some of these MenuItems at runtime?

For one in particular, the number of columns can vary based on how many children a consumer has (yes I realize normalization and proper technique would insert on another row but it is a client requirement). • issue with wpf datagrid cell style when scrolling

When I scroll up I see the selected cells but few of them missing their style and it appear in wrong cells. It look like the data grid remember the selected cells but "forget" their style.   Ok, there seems to be a problem with the JS Code for Opera browsers, as it only removes the last option tag that is selected within a multiple select tag, can someone please help me. • How do I read Unicode characters from an MS Access 2007 database through Java?

  In Java, I have written a program that reads a UTF8 text file. The text file contains a SQL query of the SELECT kind. The program then executes the query on the Microsoft Access 2007 database and writes all fields of the first row to a UTF8 text file. The problem I have is when a row is returned that contains unicode characters, such as "?". These characters show up as "?" in the text file. I know that the text files are read and written correctly, because a dummy UTF8 character ("?") is read from the text file containing the SQL query and written to the text file containing the resulting row. The UTF8 character looks correct when the written text file is opened in Notepad, so the reading and writing of the text files are not part of the problem.   I've been looking for a more elegant solution to the following typesetting problem. Consider those banners found in print media where the text is aligned like: B I G T E X T small text small text small text m o r e m e d i u m t e x t The font sizes are adjusted so that the height is scaled down for longer lines of text such that each line has equal width. I've written a small script that runs each line separately, compiles, crops the resulting pdf and then \includegraphics each in a table. This gives the desired effect but requires an both an outside script and pdfcrop (which only crops to a white bounding box). Since much of LaTeX is self-aware, I imagine it would be possible to have it recognize the width of a box and scale it appropriately so that any text fits exactly into the desired width. Any thoughts or ideas on how a pure LaTeX implementation might work?

• swf file upload control not filtering the files for the second time

  iam using swf file upload control in my application developed in asp.net & c#.net. i am having a dropdown box with file types like jpeg,.xls ,.txt etc. so when i select particular file type in the dropdown and clicking on the button would open a filedialog showing only the files of the type selected in the dropdown. The problem is that when i select "jpeg" for the first time file dialog shows only jpeg files. when i select ".xls" next time it shows again the prevoiusly selected jpeg files and not currently selected ".xls". but while debugging it was found the file type definition in the swf code has been changed to .xls . can any one guide why the file upload control not mapping the selected file for the second time

• How can I avoid properties being reset at design-time in tightly bound user controls?

  I have UserControl 'A' with a label, and this property: /// <summary> /// Gets or Sets the text of the control /// </summary> [ Browsable(true), EditorBrowsable(EditorBrowsableState.Always), Category("Appearance") ] public override string Text { get { return uxLabel.Text; } set { uxLabel.Text = value; } } I then have UserControl 'B' which has UserControl 'A' on it, and I set the Text Property to "My Example Label" in the designer. Then, I have my MainForm, which has UserControl 'B' on it. Each time I do a build or run, the Text property of UserControl 'A' is reset to its default value. I suppose this is because since I am doing a rebuild, it rebuilds both UserControl 'A' and 'B', thus causing the problem. How can I go about a better approach to design pattern to avoid this type of behavior when working with tightly bound controls and forms in a application?

• design time usercontrols - I can't see anything!

  newbie question, please forgive... I'm developing a Wpf UserControl that will eventually be bound to a business object. The usercontrol is little more than a series of laid out TextBlocks, and perhaps (later) an image or two. As I'm laying out the usercontrol, I can put dummy text into all the TextBlocks so I can see what the usercontrol will look like, but as soon as I change the text property to contain the Binding information: <TextBlock Margin="0,12.8,42,0" Name="lblLastName" FontSize="8" Height="19" VerticalAlignment="Top" Text="{Binding Mode=OneWay, Path=LastName}"/> Then I can no longer see the textbox, or any "placeholder" text. This makes it very difficult to adjust the location and sizes of all the controls on the UserControl. In WinFormas programming, you could set binding information independently of the Text property, so you could at least see the Placeholder text during design time development. It's going to be pretty hard to visually arrange a bunch of invisible TextBlocks! What's the standard solution for this?

initially created the mainWindow as a Dialog, but realized that after undock & redock, the dockWidget doesn't dock properly. Somehow there's an offset. This doesn't seem to be a problem if the mainWindow is a QtGui.QMainWindow instead of a QtGui.QDialog.
