• Freehand drawing with Quartz 2D

  I am trying to develop a simple freehand-drawing app for red-marking some of my images. Below is a method that is called from within the drawRect. I want to ask if there is a way to avoid add the path every time the path is redrawn? Also, the way the draw method is set up, the drawing gets a bit slow and choopy after a few seconds. • UIView drawRect; class variables out of scope

  Short & sweet version of my last question in light of new information. I have a UIVIew with an init and a drawrect method (and another thread and a bunch of other stuff, but I'll keep it short & sweet). All of the class variables that I alloc and init in the -(id)init method are out of scope/nil/0x0 in the drawRect method, and I am unable to access them. For example; In the interface: NSObject* fred; In the implementation: -(id)init { if(self == [super init]) { fred = [[NSObject alloc] init]; } return self; } -(void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { NSLog(@"Fred is retained %i times",[fred retainCount]); //FAIL NSLog(@"But his variable is actually just pointing at uninitialised 0x0, so you're not reading this in the debugger because the application has crashed before it got here." } Should add that init IS being called before drawRect also. Anyone have any ideas?

• How do I stub a view in rspec-2

  I'm in the process of upgrading an app to Rails 3/Rspec 2. I see that stubbing a view helper method has changed in Rspec 2. It looks like instead of doing template.stub!, we're now supposed to do view.stub!, but I can't seem to get this to work on beta 10. I get an "undefined local variable or method `view' for # < RSpec::Core::ExampleGroup::Nested_1::Nested_1::Nested_1:0x106785fd0" error. I see that in this commit David removed the view method, but I can't figure out what it was replaced with. Something in ActionView::TestCase::Behavior? I'm on rails 3.0.0.beta3. Any idea what I'm missing?

• How to round CGFloat

  I made this method + (CGFloat) round: (CGFloat)f { int a = f; CGFloat b = a; return b; } It works as expected but it only rounds down. And if it's a negative number it still rounds down. This was just a quick method I made, it isn't very important that it rounds correctly, I just made it to round the camera's x and y values for my game. Is this method okay? Is it fast? Or is there a better solution?

• StreamReader.ReadToEnd() returning an empty string

  I have a method private static String DecompressAndDecode(byte[] data) { GZipStream decompressor = new GZipStream(new MemoryStream(data), CompressionMode.Decompress); StreamReader decompressed = new StreamReader(decompressor, Encoding.UTF8); String result = decompressed.ReadToEnd(); return result; } I have some GZipped text as input and the result is supposed to be a String representation of this text. The problem is that the method returns an empty string. What is puzzling me is that when I step trough the method in debug mode and reach the return statement the result variable is an empty string but if I create a watch for the decompressed.ReadToEnd() expression it returns me the text. What I would expect at this point is the result variable to contain the text and the decompressed.ReadToEnd() expression evaluating to an empty string. (Reevaluating the decompressed.ReadToEnd() expression returns an empty string as expected). There must be something obvious I'm missing here.

I mean, to me it just inherits/copies all those properties. It's not like it's: B.prototype = A.prototype where B and A are one in the same. Q2: After A is being returned and intialized to the prototype object of B, how does JS know not to include that prototype property? What I mean is, we never have this type of situation occuring as the JS interpreter knows just to chop off the property of A's prototype: B.prototype = new A(); //any A object has an associated prototype object B.prototype.prototype;//after initialization we no longer have the separate prototype property of A

• Saving a datawindow as PDF in PB 10.5

  I have a grid datawindow with a picture in it's background (with dimensions of an A4 page) and I would like to export both data and the picture as a (single page) PDF file. • How do I iterate over the properties of an anonymous object in C#?

  I want to take an anonymous object as argument to a method, and then iterate over its properties to add each property/value to a a dynamic ExpandoObject. So what I need is to go from new { Prop1 = "first value", Prop2 = SomeObjectInstance, Prop3 = 1234 } to knowing names and values of each property, and being able to add them to the ExpandoObject. How do I accomplish this? Side note: This will be done in many of my unit tests (I'm using it to refactor away a lot of junk in the setup), so performance is to some extent relevant. I don't know enough about reflection to say for sure, but from what I've understood it's pretty performance heavy, so if it's possible I'd rather avoid it... Follow-up question: As I said, I'm taking this anonymous object as an argument to a method. What datatype should I use in the method's signature? Will all properties be available if I use object?

Module Level Delegate Sub GetPartListDataFromServer(ByVal dvOriginal As DataView, ByVal ProgramID As Integer) Dim dlgGetPartList As GetPartListDataFromServer The following code I use in a method Dim dlgGetPartList As New GetPartListDataFromServer(AddressOf AsyncThreadMethod_GetPartListDataFromServer) dlgGetPartList.BeginInvoke(ucboPart.DataSource, ucboProgram.Value, AddressOf AsyncCallback_GetPartListDataFromServer, Nothing) The method runs and does what it needs to The Asyn callback is fired upon completion where I do an EndInvoke Sub AsyncCallback_GetPartListDataFromServer(ByVal ar As IAsyncResult) dlgGetPartList.EndInvoke(Nothing) End Sub It works as long as the method that starts the BeginInvoke on the delegate only ever runs while there is not a BeginInvoke/Thread operation already running. Problem is that the a new thread could be invoked while another thread on the delegate is still running and hasnt yet been EndInvoke'd. The program needs to be able to have the delegate run in more than one instance at a time if necessary and they all need to complete and have EndInvoke called. Once I start another BeginInvoke I lose the reference to the first BeginInvoke so I am unable to clean up the new thread with an EndInvoke. What is a clean solution and best practice to overcome this problem?

  I'm creating proxies with javassist ProxyFactory. When creating a single proxy all works fine. However, when I pass a proxied class to the proxying mechanism, it fails with javassist.bytecode.DuplicateMemberException: duplicate method: setHandler in com.mypackage.Bean_$$_javassist_0_$$_javassist_1 I'm creating the proxies with this: public Object createProxiedInstance(Object originalInstance) throws Exception { Class<?> originalClass = instance.getClass(); ProxyFactory factory = new ProxyFactory(); factory.setSuperclass(originalClass); factory.setHandler(new MethodHandler() {..}); Class<T> proxyClass = factory.createClass(); return proxyClass.newInstance(); } So, how do I create proxies of proxies? Update: The actual problems is that each proxy implements the ProxyObject which defines setHandler(..) method. So the 2nd proxy is trying to redefine the method, instead of overriding it in the subclass.

  I'm trying to integrate a rails 3 app with jasper following this wiki: http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/HowtoIntegrateJasperReports But it seems that a lot of information isn't updated so it's been very hard to make it work by myself. I've also read a topic at ruby-forum: http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/139453 with some details explained but still couldn't make it work. My first problem is related with the render_to_string method: When the controller method runs I receive a "Template is missing" error: this is the method: def report @customers = Customer.all send_doc(render_to_string(:template => report_customers_path, :layout => false), '/pdfs', 'report.jasper', "customers", 'pdf') end Although this seems simple I'm not understanding why is this happening. Doesn't render_to_string with layout = false suposed to get me the string result of that action? I also tried :action instead of :template, but it does the same.   I've (along with many others) have noticed that Apple changed the appearance of the popover controller to use a "slider" window rather than the usual "popover" tableview that I've used. While I'm okay with the new appearance, like others I'm having issues with the swipe gesture that is introduced: iOS 5.1 swipe gesture hijacked by UISplitViewController - how to avoid? The fix for this seems to be to set the split view controller method "presentWithGesture" to "NO." UISplitViewController *splitViewController = [[UISplitViewController alloc] init]; splitViewController.presentsWithGesture = NO; This works great if the user is using iOS 5.1, however, if this code is run using iOS 5.0 or below, an exception is thrown since this method is only available for iOS 5.1: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '-[UISplitViewController setPresentsWithGesture:]: unrecognized selector Is it possible to get rid of this gesture without using this method so that it's backwards compatible with iOS' 5.0 and below?

• IL short-form instructions aren't short?

  Hi. I was looking at the IL code of a valid method with Reflector and I've run into this: L_00a5: leave.s L_0103 Instructions with the suffix .s are supposed to take an int8 operand, and sure enough this is should be the case with Leave_S as well. However, 0x0103 is 259, which exceeds the capacity of an int8. The method somehow works, but when I read the instructions with method Mono.Reflection.Disassembler.GetInstructions it retrieves L_00a5: leave.s L_0003 that is, 3 instead of 259, because it's supposed to be an int8. So, my question: how is the original instruction (leave.s L_0103) possible? I have looked at the ECMA documentation for that (Partition III: CIL Instruction Set) and I can't find anything that explains it. Any ideas? Thanks.

  in .NET 4 Code Access Security (CAS) is deprecated. Whenever you call a method that implicitly uses it, it fails with a NotSupportedException, that can be resolved with a configuration switch that makes it fall back to the old behavior. We have a common library that's used in both .NET 3.5 and .NET 4, so we need to be able to tell wether or not we should use the CAS method. For example, in .NET 3.5 I should call: Assembly.Load(string, Evidence); Whereas in .NET 4 I want to call Assembly.Load(string); Calling Load(string, Evidence) throws a NotSupportedException. • deriving from NSTabViewItem

  I'm writing a Cocoa app. One dialog has 3 tabs, some of the tabs needs more loading time, so I want to load them lazily. Since each Tab is a NSTabViewItem class, so I'm trying to derive from it and overriding its view property. In the view getter method, I use a ViewController to load a view and returns out. In Debugging, I found NSTabViewItem -view method is get called correctly, but after that NSTabView tries to set Initial FirstResponder and crashed with message: * Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: 'In -[NSTabViewItem setInitialFirstResponder:], the first responder must descend from the tab view item's view. (Item: Invalid responder: )' I tried to override the -initialFirstResponder method to return a sub-view of my loaded view, but it still crashes the same place. does anyone know how to get it work correctly? Also is it correct way to do this by deriving the NSTabViewItem? thanks! -Jonny

• UIView shadow drawing wrong

  Trying to draw a shadow using code from this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/805872/how-do-i-draw-a-shadow-under-a-uiview I implement it in a UIView subclass as discussed, but when I try and use it using UIView *shadow = [[ShadowView alloc]initWithFrame:CGRectMake(100,100,100,100)]; I get only a black square, rather than something resembling shadow. Am I missing something here?

So anyone know how I can do AJAX submit "Form", from JavaScript and strongly typed mechanism (public AcrionResult MyFormAction(FormModel model); ) will work?

• Why does Chrome choke more often than IE 8 and Firefox?

  On my system, Chrome chokes quite more often than IE 8 or Firefox -- it searched for the website for 20 seconds and then said website not found. I wonder if it could be due to DNS issue or different browsers use different method to connecting to the internet (as Fiddler works for some browser and not for some)? any method to fix it? (the ISP here is AT&T u-verse, if it matters). thanks.

• Objective C message dispatch mechanism

  I am just staring to play around with Objective C (writing toy iPhone apps) and I am curious about the underlying mechanism used to dispatch messages. I have a good understanding of how virtual functions in C++ are generally implemented and what the costs are relative to a static or non-virtual method call, but I don't have any background with Obj-C to know how messages are sent. Browsing around I found this loose benchmark and it mentions IMP cached messages being faster than virtual function calls, which are in turn faster than a standard message send. I am not trying to optimize anything, just get deeper understanding of how exactly the messages get dispatched. How are Obj-C messages dispatched? How do Instance Method Pointers get cached and can you (in general) tell by reading the code if a message will get cached? Are class methods essentially the same as a C function (or static class method in C++), or is there something more to them? I know some of these questions may be 'implementation dependent' but there is only one implementation that really counts.

• Customize VisualStudio syntax highlighting even more

  Hi everybody, I am wondering if it is possible to set VisualStudio IDE so it highlights private/protected/public variables of the class differently as well as change formatting on locals (i.e. variables that are either passed in or declared inside a function, like this). I did not find any such options in the normal Fonts and Colors menu of VS. Also a search on SO reveals that (at least as of 2 years ago) only add-ons provide such features. But is there a way to manually edit some file? Just because we don't get a nice UI to edit, doesn't mean underlying framework automatically doesn't support it. I mean add-ons have to plug into something to do their magic in the editor. Any insights into this issue? Thanks!

DataAnnotations in sample code does not work when the database fields are set to not allow nulls. ERROR occurs with the code from the book and with the sample code downloaded from codeplex. Help! I'm really frustrated by this!! I can't believe something so simple just doesn't work??? Steps to reproduce ERROR: Set Database fields to not allow NULLs (See Picture) Set NerdDinnerEntityModel Dinner class fields' Nullable property to false (See Picture) Add DataAnnotations for Dinner_Validation class (CODE A) Create Dinner repository class (CODE B) Add CREATE action to DinnerController (CODE C) This is blank form before posting (See Picture) This null ERROR occurs when posting a blank form which should be intercepted by the Dinner_Validation class DataAnnotations. Note ERROR message says that "This property cannot be set to a null value. WTH??? (See Picture) The next ERROR occurs during the edit process. • Wicket testing - AnnotApplicationContextMock - There is no application attached to current thread ma

  I've written a couple of tests for a small web app, but I get an error when I try to run the page specific tests that makes use of WicketTester. Google sends me to a mailing list for Apache Wicket, where a user experienced the same exception. He/she said the problem was that AnnotApplicationContextMock was initialized before the Wicket Application. I've pasted my WicketApplication class as well. Has any of you dealt with this error before? I've pasted the exception and the class below. • Set text highlight colour of Blackberry RichTextField

  Does anyone know how to set the background colour of just a section of text within a RichTextField on the Blackberry? I already use the offsets, attributes and fonts arrays to make changes to the appearance of certain sections of the text, but I would like to add a highlight colour to the background of one section too. I know there is a protected method called getBackgroundColors that returns an array of colors to be used, which I can overwrite. But I have tried this and that method never seems to get called in my code, I don't actually know how and when the underlying implementation of the RichTextField actually use this method. Any ideas?

• Parsing C#, finding methods and putting try/catch to all methods

  I know it sounds weird but I am required to put a wrapping try catch block to every method to catch all exceptions. We have thousands of methods and I need to do it in an automated way. What do you suggest? I am planning to parse all cs files and detect methods and insert a try catch block with an application.
