I have a canvas containing a datagrid. I set horz and vert scroll to 'off' for the canvas, and set both to 'auto' for the DG. This works until I have a larger number of columns in the DG (=16), then the vert scroll bar doesn't appear. Anyone seen this and, better yet, have an answer?
TIA,
Perflexed
I'm preparing to teach someone to program. When I learned the course material used turtle graphics for the first few exercises. In reading introductory textbooks I have not found one that uses the technique. Did others find this approach helpful. If not what is a better way to learn to program?
Being new to Python, I decided to get some feedback on a class I'd written ASAP so I ran it against pylint. Is the message it gave "Warning: Method could be a function" telling me that it would be better to move this method out of the class because it doesn't use any instance variables? In c# I would make this a static method. What's the most pythonic thing to do here?
Hi,
I'm going to develop a social like network using Ruby on Rails.

I've just noticed that most of hpricot code is written in java...
I heard that JRuby performed a lot better than native ruby when processing regular expression. Is maybe the java classes just activated if JRuby or Java is installed and the ruby used if these are not found?
It's something puzzling indeed.
Thanks
Regarding gridviews that are not bound to a Data Source Control:
In most GridView tutorials that I have seen, when just about any GridView event occurs, the end of the event handler will include BindDataGrid().
In some form, these BindDataGrid() functions 1) Grab data from the database 2) Assign any Filter or Sort expressions to the data, and 3) Bind the gridview to that data source (usually a DataView or DataTable.
Is there a better way to provide filterable & sortable data to a GridView without having to hit the database so often?
Thanks
I want to generate an XML file using perl and XSLT. Is it possible to achieve this by updating the XSLT dynamically by uusing values from a hash?
Or is there any better solution for wirting a simple XML file using perl?
Starting to learn image filtering and stumped on a question found on website: Applying a 3×3 mean filter twice does not produce quite the same result as applying a 5×5 mean filter once. However, a 5×5 convolution kernel can be constructed which is equivalent. What does this kernel look like?
Would appreciate help so that I can understand the subject better. Thanks.
Hello. For my data intensive web application (heavy forms & complex reports), from performance standpoint, which isbetter ... a browser plug-in based RIA (say SilverLight) or Java Script based RIA (say ExtJS). At this moment, we can avoid the discussion of plug-in availability, etc. My only focus is performance. Reasoning will be appreciated.
Just notice that after updating to Safari 5 (mac) all the flash applications that respond to resize events got sluggish.
try:
http://www.tutorio.com/media/flash/liquid-demo.html
this works great with firefox 3.6.3, Chrome can deal with it fine, although not so fast as Firefox, but new Safari gives a awful experience, distorting all content if you do fast resizing.
Any ideas why is this happening / and how can I get a better performance with safari browsers?
Hi there, I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on 'best practices' for using global state in a web application - specifically PHP, although im looking for generic best practices i.e. design patterns etc.
At the moment I just use a static class, calling it Configs. I suppose this is similar to using the registry pattern but surely there is a more elegant way of handling global data within an application - i just cant think of a better way though.
Instead of adding each item one by one to the ListBox destinationList from the string array m_List like this:
foreach (object name in m_List)
{
destinationList.Items.Add((string)name);
}
Is there any better way I can do it?
I don't want to bind the data to the destinationList since I want to delete some entries from the ListBox later on.
I am using json data and iterating it through jquery and displaying my results...

I want to use EC2 for some reasons and EC2 provides both windows and linux deployments, but linux is much cheaper (linux reserved instances are approx. %63-%85 price of windows ones and spot instances are %50 cheaper for linux). I need a type safe lang and mainstream platform and I prefer to use .net/c# stack (but not mono for some reasons), but in this situation java seems a better fit for the future (when ec2 instance counts begin to increase). So, is it worth to use .net ?
best regards,
I'm writing in .NET a windows service that, at windows startup, executes some network operations. I noticed that my service starts before the network is up.
How can I check the network connectivity? Or, better, how can I check if the dhcp gave me an ip?
I've got a few books and helpful guides to Perl from my company's scripting guy, but I can't seem to find where the best IDE for Perl is.
Mind you, simple isbetter. I'm just learning for now.
What are some of the better messageboard components that are available for an ASP.NET site. I currently have a site in C#/Ajax (FW 3.5) that I would like to add a messageboard to (also have a SQL Server db). Can someone recommend a component that can be easily added?
Hello all,
I want to create a simple batch file that would perform some Visual Studio 2008 refactoring tasks on some files. For example, I would like to call the Refactor.ExtractInferface command on a given file.
Can I do this from the command line? Is there a better way (I am sure there is) of doing this?
Thanks,
H.
I have a c# windows service that needs to execute a database query every 60 seconds (or whatever interval is set in the config file). I'm using Thread.sleep(60) in a while loop to accomplish this. Is there a better way to do this?
Thanks

I have a list of user controls all derived from one base class. These controls can be added to various panels and I'm trying to implement the drag-drop functionality, the problem I'm running in to is on the DragDrop event.
The DragEventArgs: e.Data.GetData(typeof(baseClass)) doesn't work. It wants:
e.Data.GetData(typeof(derivedClass1))
e.Data.GetData(typeof(derivedClass2)) etc...
Is there a way I can get around this, or a better way to architect it?
I have seen yahoo ui using div for every node of the tree. Is this a good thing to do. Seems like every node including leaf node is heavily nested. I saw a div, table, tr, td being used for creating a node. Is this necessary. Is there a better way to do the same.
I tried to us tr for every node. Are there any issues with this approach
Thanks
I am planning to make Q&A system (quite specific, has nothing to do with IT)
I was looking for Stackoverflow database map: http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/2677/anatomy-of-a-data-dump/2678#2678
And I am thinking is not it isbetter practice to make separate table for questions titles. With "firstPostId".
Instead of
|- PostTypeId
| - 1: Question
| - 2: Answer
So I want to know, why stackoverflow did not use separate table for questions title. Is it "Do not optimize yet" or does it have any logic behind it?
I mean, do programmers need very fast computers with amazing video cards or just standard ones. Is it better to use 1 or 2 monitors? Some applications consume a lot of resources like Netbeans or Eclipse and sometimes developers need to install databases, graphic design applications, web design applications, web servers in their own computers for testing purposes.
