• Ubuntu shutdown hook?

  I want to check 10+ local Git repositories if they have any unpushed commit, before shutdown. (I always forgot to push them, so later, the next morning I came office and back home again) I think maybe the shutdown process can check some conditions to meet, if any condition is not met, then give the user the choice to continue to shutdown or just cancel. Then, I can write something to hook the shutdown to check my Git repository to push.

• HP does not power off after shutdown (Vista)

  My HP d330 does not properly shutdown, after Vista "shutting down" message the lcd screen goes black, but both HD + Power Leds remain on.. Any ideas? No entries in EventViewer about this. Keyboard leds no more work after this partial shutdown so I assume hardware is partially shutdown..? Same problem occurs when I choose Sleep from shutdown menu

• Detecting Process Shutdown/Startup Events through ActivationAgents

  @10g - This post is motivated by one of my close friends and colleague - who wanted to proactively know when a BPEL process shuts down/re-activates. This typically happens when you have a BPEL Process that has an inbound polling adapter, when the adapter loses connectivity to the source system. Or whatever causes it. One valuable suggestion came in from one of my colleagues - he suggested I write my own ActivationAgent to do the job. Well, it really worked. Here is a sample ActivationAgent that you can use. There are few methods you need to override from BaseActivationAgent, and you are on your way to receiving notifications/what not, whenever the shutdown/startup events occur. In the example below, I am retrieving the emailAddress property [that is specified in your bpel.xml activationAgent section] and use that to send out an email notification on the activation agent initialization. You could choose to do different things. • Multi-Threaded Application vs. Single Threaded Application

  Why would we use a multi threaded application vs. a single threaded application? First we must define multithreading. Multithreading is a feature of an operating system that allows programs to run subcomponents or threads in parallel. Typically most applications only need to use one thread because they do not perform time consuming tasks. The use of multiple threads allows an application to distribute long running tasks so that they can be executed in parallel. This gives the user the perceived appearance that the application is working faster due to the fact that while one thread is waiting on an IO process the remaining tasks can make use of the available CPU. The allows working threads to execute in tandem so that they can be competed sooner. Multithreading Benefits Improved responsiveness — Users usually report improved responsiveness compared to single thread applications. Faster applications — Multiple threads can lead to improved application performance. Prioritization — Threads can be assigned a priority which would allow higher priority tasks to take precedence over lower priority tasks. Single Threading Benefits Programming and debugging —These activities are easier compared to multithreaded applications due to the reduced complexity Less Overhead — Threads add overhead to an application When developing multi-threaded applications, the following must be considered. Deadlocks occur when two threads hold a monitor that the other one requires. In essence each task is blocking the other and both tasks are waiting for the other monitor to be released. This forces an application to hang or deadlock. Resource allocation is used to prevent deadlocks because the system determines if approving the resource request will render the system in an unsafe state. An unsafe state could result in a deadlock. The system only approves requests that will lead to safe states. Thread Synchronization is used when multiple threads use the same instance of an object. The threads accessing the object can then be locked and then synchronized so that each task can interact with the static object on at a time.

• linux shutdown hang with wifi cifs mounts

  Since fedora 15 (and now with 16) it seems that wireless clients take a long while to shutdown when they have network filesystems mounted at shutdown time. I've pushed out a cifs mount via puppet, and all clients have it, including those on wireless. If say a laptop is on a wired connection it shuts down just fine, but if its on the wifi at the time (and no wired connection) it'll hang at the fedora f logo. I'm not sure if its indefinite or just a really long while, but ill give it a test when i shut this machine down in a second. Needless to say its pretty annoying, so is there a way of causing the machine to shutdown even if network connectivity has been lost at unmount time, -- or an official way to reorder events so the wireless card is kept up until after the unmount happens during the shut down process (short of writing a custom script for shutdowns which is a bit of a kludge) ? It does this on multiple machines, and all started doing it when we went from fedora 14 to 15. It was such an obvious issue i'd kind of assumed someone must have reported it or there was an easy fix, but i've not discovered anything yet.   I'm doing a metro app for Windows 8. And as part of its functionality, I need to initiate shutdown of Winodws 8 from the Metro App. Here are the questions: 1) Firstly, I researched a lot on this topic and I found out that System.Diagnostics.Process is not available for Metro App. So, is there a another way around? 2) Even if I can't directly shutdown, is there a way to trigger it from the Metro App? I would prefer a solution in C#. Thanks.

  I have one application which handles hardware events connected on the same computer's PCIe slots. The maximum number of PCIe slots on motherboard are two. I have utilized both slots. Now for scaling the application I need either more PCIe slots in same computer or I use another computer. So consider I am using another computer with same application and hardware connected on the PCIe Slots. Now my problem is that I want to design application over it which can access both computers hardware devices and does the process on it. • 12.10 shutdown/power-up issue

  I have just upgraded to 12.10 on a Shuttle XPC which I use mainly for XBMC and have a problem with shut down/power up. When I shut down from within XBMC the box seems to shut down correctly, but it won't always start again. It hangs before it reaches the point where it mounts the disc's. If I disconnect power shortly and then start up again everything works as it should. It isn't quite repeatable and it does not seem to happen if I exit XBMC and then power down. During power up there seems to be an issue about timing when mounting discs. What could it be ?

  Hello everyone and thanks in advance. I am new in Ubuntu and have the 12.04 version dual boot with Windows XP. I have the following problem. The laptop can reboot using the reboot option from the menu but it cannot shut down. It starts shutting down, the dots appear but then it freezes and does not turn off. Sometimes it shuts down normally (usually just after an update) but then it loses that capability again. Some strange things, I noticed that when the dots freeze, the USB mouse loses power, BUT the usb-powered cooling pad continues to work The only Fn shortcuts that work all the time are the Volume up, down and mute, BUT sometimes when the other Fn combinations (screen-off etc) work the computer shuts down normally I searched a lot on my own, please help.

  I am a new linux user so i am not familiar with what actually is needed to check. When shutting down or trying to restart i get a screen with yellow letters and the system does not close or restart. I have to shut down manually. I can't type all the numbers but i will give the last ones. [90102.232650] [ end-trace 435966f5b367871 ] this seems to have happened after i downgraded the xorg so i can get drivers for my ATI card(4850HD). The suspend command works fine.

• Shutdown issues on my Dell XPS M1530

  On my Dell XPS M1530 lapttop, I am facing issues with shut-down option after upgrading to 12.04 LTS from 11.10. Sometimes it shutdowns "cleanly". But other times everything goes down but I can still see the power LED glowing (even after removing the power cord). If I keep it like that laptop temperature increases. So finally I opt for "hard shut-down" (i.e. pressing the power button on). Any thoughts what is happening here?. • Disabling shutdown command for all users, even root - consequences?

  I would like to disable the shutdown command for all users, even root, on an Ubuntu Server installation. The reason I want to do this is to ensure that I don't get into the habit of shutting down the machine in this way, as I SSH into a lot of production machines at the same time as this one, and I don't want to accidentally shutdown one of the other machines by typing the command into the wrong window. The server I want do disable shutdown on only runs inside VirtualBox on my Windows desktop, and I only use it for local testing so it is not a problem if I can't shut it down from the command line. I have already mitigated the problem a bit by ensuring I have a different password on the VirtualBox image, but obviously if I am within the sudo 'window' on one of the production machines, I could still accidentally shut it down. My questions are: How do I disable the shutdown command? If I do disable the shutdown command, are there any consequences that I should be made aware of? Most specifically, will it disable support for ACPI shutdown that is the equivalent of pressing the power button on a physical machine? Could it affect other generic applications? For information, I just use this VirtualBox image for trying out shell scripts, running Tomcat and Java, and that kind of thing.

• Looking for reading material on application architecture with web UI

  I'm looking for articles (or other reading material) on the topic of fat client applications with a web UI layer. Open-source projects that use this architecture would be very interesting too. Such an application would embed one (or more) browser-window(s) (chromiumembedded for example). You would need bidirectional communication between your web-UI and your domain model/services. I think this allows quick prototyping the UI, a clean separation between logic and UI and potentially easier portability across platforms (compared to WinForms for example). But that is just my view, I was looking for the view of people who have been on that road. An example of an application using a web-ui layer is Light Table. Unfortunately it is not open source (at this point?).

I want to inspect those files when the apps are closed in the event of a system shutdown. However, when the system comes up again I find that all temporary files have been deleted. How can I ask the system not to clear the files in /tmp/ on shutdown?

• Tomcat hangs in shutdown

  I have a Tomcat server that won't shut down. It is listening on the correct port (8005, for this one) to receive the SHUTDOWN command. I can issue that command, either with the bin/shutdown.sh script or by telnetting to that port and typing SHUTDOWN. At this point, the shutdown port closes; I can no longer connect to it. The AJP13 port stays open, though; nothing is logged in catalina.out, and things don't shut down. Anyone seen this before? This is on Solaris 10 on Sparc, if it matters (it probably doesn't) and Tomcat version 6.0.20.

I know that it is possible to do this manually using the command shutdown -a In the worst case, I could ShellExecute this, but I was wondering if there was a better way. Also, how do I find out programatically that the OS is about to shut down, via the Win32 API?

• Confused about application submission

  I finished my app but I'm totally confused about how to submit it to launchpad and the software center. I'm also new to launchpad. 1) I created a project at launchpad and synchronized an OpenPGP key via the password tool. This was about 30 minutes ago but launchpad still shows "No OpenPGP keys registered." Is this normal? 2) What I have to do next with the PPA? 3) How do I submit my app? Do I have to adjust files with the PPA? The showdown blog shows that quickly submitubuntu is enough but here in the forum I read about quickly release or quickly share. So which one is correct? 4) Do I have to add this file to launchpad as well? 5) Do I get a confirmation that my app was correctly submitted and take part of the contest? Since I do it for first time I want to be sure that everything is ok. I'm sorry for all my questions and I know that there are many topics about it but everywhere something different is written and I'm confused how to proceed. Thanks in advance!

• Windows 8 Doesn't Shutdown Properly With Fast Start-Up Enabled

  While Fast start-up is enabled, on turning the computer off (shutdown) the computer idles for about 5min after logging out/screen turning off. It then turns off. On returning into Windows I receive the error message saying Windows didn't shut down properly. Hibernate works fine, and I am told this shouldn't be the case - If one doesn't work, neither should. It works when both Fast start-up is enabled and disabled, as does restart and sleep. Windows is installed under UEFI. The UEFI ultra fast boot option for my motherboard cannot be enabled as my GPU doesn't support some UEFI GOP tech. As far as I know, not related to windows fast start-up, but thought it was worth mentioning. To clarify, if this: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-8-a.html is enabled, the computer does not shut down properly. EDIT: Some more information on the matter: Formatting didn't fix the issue. Still fails regardless of drivers installed. Hardware was purchased ~6months ago. Running a good SSD. Event viewer Always these two messages in close succession: Error (event ID 6008): The previous system shutdown at 7:45:21 PM on ?27/?10/?2012 was unexpected. Critical (kernel power, event ID 41): The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. Upon installing WPT as suggested below to figure out what was happening during shutdown, and running the cmd xbootmgr -trace shutdown -noPrepReboot -traceFlags BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER -resultPath C:\TEMP Windows fast start-up is now working consistently. Still works upon uninstalling WPT. This is the only change to occur on the computer. Nothing else has bee installed/uninstalled, no Windows Updates, nothing. Windows fast start-up did not work prior to installing WPT and running the cmd (made sure I tested).

• Windows shutdown processes termination sequence

  I've seen today an wierd situation. I have a theory, but it would help to know more about the windows shutdown process. If you have some knowlaged about it please share. A machine was shutdown (at this moment I suspect an unexpected mantainace), on that machine there was a long running process that was interrupted. Monitorization confirms that the process did not terminated normally. Loking at the logs for the long running process it seem that was just finishing. That seems higly unprobable since it was running for more than 6 hours (witch is a bit more than the usual 5 hours). The process lanches child processes and waits for results from them, I suspect pour error control on the parent process and that the shutdown as terminated child processes before.

• WHS - client does not shutdown after backup

  I have my WHS/Win 7 laptop configured to do automatic backups through the connector. The backups run just fine every night. I put my computer in hibernate when I go to bed, it wakes and runs the backups, but then it doesn't go back into hibernate or shutdown. I'd like to be able to force it to shutdown after the backups are completed. I don't see a scheduled task in the system for the WHS backups. Any idea how I can get my laptop to shutdown after the backups are complete? Thanks.

  Hi all, Im having some problems with a friends netbook (a dell mini 10). It will not shutdown or logoff via the usual route. Whenever the shutdown/logoff button is clicked, it will briefly freeze (maybe for only a second) and then do nothing. Ive tried shutting down manually via the command line using shutdown /p but all to no avail, it just defaults back to flashing cursor in the command prompt. There doesnt seem to be any mention of a similar problem on google so i was wondering if anyone else had any ideas. Thanks oh and its runnning windows 7 starter.

(5) What am I to understand? What should I do to get it working form all of my computers.
