  • template function error..

    - by sil3nt
    Hi there, I have function which takes in an parameter of a class called "Triple", and am returning the averge of 3 values of type float. template <typename ElemT> float average(Triple ElemT<float> &arg){ float pos1 = arg.getElem(1); float pos2 = arg.getElem(2); float pos3 = arg.getElem(3); return ( (pos1+pos2+po3) /3 ); } when i try compiling this i get q2b.cpp:32: error: template declaration of `float average' q2b.cpp:32: error: missing template arguments before "ElemT" not quite sure what this means.

  • Listing C Constants/Macros

    - by ZJR
    Is there a way to make the GNU C Preprocessor, cpp (or some other tool) list all available macros and their values at a given point in a C file? I'm looking for system-specific macros while porting a program that's already unix savvy and loading a sparse bunch of unix system files. Just wondering if there's an easier way than going hunting for definitions.

  • Performance of vector::size() : is it as fast as reading a variable?

    - by zoli2k
    I have do an extensive calculation on a big vector of integers. The vector size is not changed during the calculation. The size of the vector is frequently accessed by the code. What is faster in general: using the vector::size() function or using helper constant vectorSize storing the size of the vector? I know that compilers usually able to inline the size() function when setting the proper compiler flags, however, making a function inline is something that a compiler may do but can not be forced.

  • Program using read() entering into an infinite loop

    - by Soham
    1oid ReadBinary(char *infile,HXmap* AssetMap) { int fd; size_t bytes_read, bytes_expected = 100000000*sizeof(char); char *data; if ((fd = open(infile,O_RDONLY)) < 0) err(EX_NOINPUT, "%s", infile); if ((data = malloc(bytes_expected)) == NULL) err(EX_OSERR, "data malloc"); bytes_read = read(fd, data, bytes_expected); if (bytes_read != bytes_expected) printf("Read only %d of %d bytes %d\n", \ bytes_read, bytes_expected,EX_DATAERR); /* ... operate on data ... */ printf("\n"); int i=0; int counter=0; char ch=data[0]; char message[512]; Message* newMessage; while(i!=bytes_read) { while(ch!='\n') { message[counter]=ch; i++; counter++; ch =data[i]; } message[counter]='\n'; message[counter+1]='\0'; //--------------------------------------------------- newMessage = (Message*)parser(message); MessageProcess(newMessage,AssetMap); //-------------------------------------------------- //printf("idNUM %e\n",newMessage->idNum); free(newMessage); i++; counter=0; ch =data[i]; } free(data); } Here, I have allocated 100MB of data with malloc, and passed a file big enough(not 500MB) size of 926KB about. When I pass small files, it reads and exits like a charm, but when I pass a big enough file, the program executes till some point after which it just hangs. I suspect it either entered an infinite loop, or there is memory leak. EDIT For better understanding I stripped away all unnecessary function calls, and checked what happens, when given a large file as input. I have attached the modified code void ReadBinary(char *infile,HXmap* AssetMap) { int fd; size_t bytes_read, bytes_expected = 500000000*sizeof(char); char *data; if ((fd = open(infile,O_RDONLY)) < 0) err(EX_NOINPUT, "%s", infile); if ((data = malloc(bytes_expected)) == NULL) err(EX_OSERR, "data malloc"); bytes_read = read(fd, data, bytes_expected); if (bytes_read != bytes_expected) printf("Read only %d of %d bytes %d\n", \ bytes_read, bytes_expected,EX_DATAERR); /* ... operate on data ... */ printf("\n"); int i=0; int counter=0; char ch=data[0]; char message[512]; while(i<=bytes_read) { while(ch!='\n') { message[counter]=ch; i++; counter++; ch =data[i]; } message[counter]='\n'; message[counter+1]='\0'; i++; printf("idNUM \n"); counter=0; ch =data[i]; } free(data); } What looks like is, it prints a whole lot of idNUM's and then poof segmentation fault I think this is an interesting behaviour, and to me it looks like there is some problem with memory FURTHER EDIT I changed back the i!=bytes_read it gives no segmentation fault. When I check for i<=bytes_read it blows past the limits in the innerloop.(courtesy gdb)

  • g++ creates several symbols of a const ?

    In one of my header (C++) files I changed #define TIMEOUT 10 to the more(?) • Returning a dynamically created array from function

    - by informer2000
    I'm trying to create a function that would dynamically allocate an array, sets the values of the elements, and returns the size of the array. The array variable is a pointer that is declared outside the function and passed as a parameter. Here is the code: #include <cstdlib> #include <iostream> using namespace std; int doArray(int *arr) { int sz = 10; arr = (int*) malloc(sizeof(int) * sz); for (int i=0; i<sz; i++) { arr[i] = i * 5; } return sz; } int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { int *arr = NULL; int size = doArray(arr); for (int i=0; i<size; i++) { cout << arr[i] << endl; } return 0; } For some reason, the program terminates on the first iteration of the for loop in main()! Am I doing something wrong?

  • Once installed geos library (C++, and C), and then trying to install rgeos package (R), it reports geos-config missing!

    - by user1873888
    Knowing that the package rgeos, from the R language, requieres a prior installation of geos libraries, I installed, both, libgeos and libgeos-c1 (3.2.2), using the synaptic installer in my Ubuntu 12.04 (32 bit) machine. Then I tried to install rgeos directly from the R console, and it issued a message in the sense that geos-config was not found. The output is as follows: > install.packages("rgeos") Installing package(s) into ‘/home/checo/R/i486-pc-linux-gnu-library/2.15’ (as ‘lib’ is unspecified) also installing the dependency ‘sp’ probando la URL 'http://cran.rstudio.com/src/contrib/sp_1.0-9.tar.gz' Content type 'application/x-gzip' length 882102 bytes (861 Kb) URL abierta ================================================== downloaded 861 Kb probando la URL 'http://cran.rstudio.com/src/contrib/rgeos_0.2-19.tar.gz' Content type 'application/x-gzip' length 221471 bytes (216 Kb) URL abierta ================================================== downloaded 216 Kb * installing *source* package ‘sp’ ... ** package ‘sp’ successfully unpacked and MD5 sums checked ** libs gcc -std=gnu99 -I/usr/share/R/include -DNDEBUG -fpic -O3 -pipe -g -c R centroid.c -o Rcentroid.o gcc -std=gnu99 -I/usr/share/R/include -DNDEBUG -fpic -O3 -pipe -g -c gcdist.c -o gcdist.o gcc -std=gnu99 -I/usr/share/R/include -DNDEBUG -fpic -O3 -pipe -g -c init.c -o init.o gcc -std=gnu99 -I/usr/share/R/include -DNDEBUG -fpic -O3 -pipe -g -c pip.c -o pip.o gcc -std=gnu99 -I/usr/share/R/include -DNDEBUG -fpic -O3 -pipe -g -c pip2.c -o pip2.o gcc -std=gnu99 -I/usr/share/R/include -DNDEBUG -fpic -O3 -pipe -g -c sp_xports.c -o sp_xports.o gcc -std=gnu99 -I/usr/share/R/include -DNDEBUG -fpic -O3 -pipe -g -c surfaceArea.c -o surfaceArea.o gcc -std=gnu99 -I/usr/share/R/include -DNDEBUG -fpic -O3 -pipe -g -c zerodist.c -o zerodist.o gcc -std=gnu99 -shared -o sp.so Rcentroid.o gcdist.o init.o pip.o pip2.o sp_xports.o surfaceArea.o zerodist.o -L/usr/lib/R/lib -lR installing to /home/checo/R/i486-pc-linux-gnu-library/2.15/sp/libs ** R ** data ** demo ** inst ** preparing package for lazy loading ** help *** installing help indices ** building package indices ** installing vignettes ‘intro_sp.Rnw’ ‘over.Rnw’ ** testing if installed package can be loaded * DONE (sp) * installing *source* package ‘rgeos’ ... ** package ‘rgeos’ successfully unpacked and MD5 sums checked configure: CC: gcc -std=gnu99 configure: CXX: g++ configure: rgeos: 0.2-17 checking for /usr/bin/svnversion... no configure: svn revision: 394 checking geos-config usability... ./configure: line 1385: geos-config: command not found no configure: error: geos-config not usable ERROR: configuration failed for package ‘rgeos’ * removing ‘/home/checo/R/i486-pc-linux-gnu-library/2.15/rgeos’ Warning in install.packages : installation of package ‘rgeos’ had non-zero exit status Forgive my ignorance, but I don't know where this file, "geos-config", comes from: should it be generated by the gcc compilations above, or should it be previously installed when the libgeos libraries were intalled? • Cross-compiling with OpenSSL for Windows

    - by singpolyma
    I'm trying to compile the oauth-utils http://mir.dnsalias.com/oss/oauth/start for Windows from Ubuntu. I have compiled it on Windows before (a few months back), but wanted to try cross-compiling. I got openssl build using mingw32 ok, and put libssl.a and libcrypto.a in the right place. I'm compiling Ruby 1.9.1-p376 under Ubuntu 8.04 server LTS (64-bit), by doing the following: $ ./configure $ make $ sudo make install ./configure works without complaints. make hangs indefinitely until all my RAM and swap is gone. • How to make Eclipse CDT's Linux GCC toolchain resolve C++ standard library headers?

    - by Muhammad Khan
    In Ubuntu 12.04 LTS I installed the Eclipse CDT plugin and opened the new hello world project to just test everything out. When I was creating the project, I chose the only toolchain: "Linux GCC" When the project is created, however, it says that #include<iostream> #include<cstdlb> are unresolved. Thus, lines with cout and endl can't be used and it cannot find std. using namespace std; is also causing problems. How can I get my #include directives for standard library headers recognized, to support code using the std namespace?

  • How do I recover from upgrading while using bad version of gcc/binutils?

    - by Shawn J. Goff
    I upgraded from 9.04 to 10.10 a couple of days ago, and things are really messed up - X is crashing constantly. Since then, I had an application segfault for no reason, when I was debugging, I found that it was strlen() that was causing the segfault (pointing to libc being the problem)! Upon investigation, I found that it was because I had a bad version of gcc and binutils installed in /usr/bin/local; I removed it, recompiled the application, and it no longer crashes. Now, looking at my logs, I see that X is also crashing due to libc. Backtrace: 0: /usr/bin/X11/X (xorg_backtrace+0x3b) [0x80ef31b] 1: /usr/bin/X11/X (0x8048000+0x5d00d) [0x80a500d] 2: (vdso) (__kernel_rt_sigreturn+0x0) [0xb77e240c] 3: /usr/bin/X11/X (0x8048000+0xbb0b6) [0x81030b6] 4: /usr/bin/X11/X (0x8048000+0xbc3ef) [0x81043ef] 5: /usr/bin/X11/X (0x8048000+0x26ee7) [0x806eee7] 6: /usr/bin/X11/X (0x8048000+0x1a5da) [0x80625da] 7: /lib/libc.so.6 (__libc_start_main+0xe7) [0xb750ace7] 8: /usr/bin/X11/X (0x8048000+0x1a1b1) [0x80621b1] Segmentation fault at address 0x32156654 Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). • "Launch Failed. Binary Not Found." Snow Leopard and Eclipse C/C++ IDE issue.

    - by Alex
    Not a question, I've just scoured the internet in search of a solution for this problem and thought I'd share it with the good folks of SO. I'll put it in plain terms so that it's accessible to newbs. :) (Apologies if this is the wrong place -- just trying to be helpful.) This issue occurs with almost any user OS X Snow Leopard who tries to use the Eclipse C/C++ IDE, but is particularly annoying for the people (like me) who were using the Eclipse C/C++ IDE in Leopard, and were unable to work with Eclipse anymore when they upgraded. The issue occurs When users go to build/compile/link their software. They get the following error: Launch Failed. Binary Not Found. Further, the "binaries" branch in the project window on the left is simply nonexistent. THE PROBLEM: is that GCC 4.2 (the GNU Compiler Collection) that comes with Snow Leopard compiles binaries in 64-bit by default. Unfortunately, the linker that Eclipse uses does not understand 64-bit binaries; it reads 32-bit binaries. There may be other issues here, but in short, they culminate in no binary being generated, at least not one that Eclipse can read, which translates into Eclipse not finding the binaries. Hence the error. One solution is to add an -arch i686 flag when making the file, but manually making the file every time is annoying. Luckily for us, Snow Leopard also comes with GCC 4.0, which compiles in 32 bits by default. So one solution is merely to link this as the default compiler. This is the way I did it. THE SOLUTION: The GCCs are in /usr/bin, which is normally a hidden folder, so you can't see it in the Finder unless you explicitly tell the system that you want to see hidden folders. Anyway, what you want to do is go to the /usr/bin folder and delete the path that links the GCC command with GCC 4.2 and add a path that links the GCC command with GCC 4.0. In other words, when you or Eclipse try to access GCC, we want the command to go to the compiler that builds in 32 bits by default, so that the linker can read the files; we do not want it to go to the compiler that compiles in 64 bits. The best way to do this is to go to Applications/Utilities, and select the app called Terminal. A text prompt should come up. It should say something like "(Computer Name):~ (Username)$ " (with a space for you user input at the end). The way to accomplish the tasks above is to enter the following commands, entering each one in sequence VERBATIM, and pressing enter after each individual line. cd /usr/bin rm cc gcc c++ g++ ln -s gcc-4.0 cc ln -s gcc-4.0 gcc ln -s c++-4.0 c++ ln -s g++-4.0 g++ Like me, you will probably get an error that tells you you don't have permission to access these files. If so, try the following commands instead: cd /usr/bin sudo rm cc gcc c++ g++ sudo ln -s gcc-4.0 cc sudo ln -s gcc-4.0 gcc sudo ln -s c++-4.0 c++ sudo ln -s g++-4.0 g++ Sudo may prompt you for a password. If you've never used sudo before, try just pressing enter. If that doesn't work, try the password for your main admin account. OTHER POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS You may be able to enter build variables into Eclipse. I tried this, but I don't know enough about it. If you want to feel it out, the flag you will probably need is -arch i686. In earnest, GCC-4.0 worked for me all this time, and I don't see any reason to switch now. There may be a way to alter the default for the compiler itself, but once again, I don't know enough about it. Hope this has been helpful and informative. Good coding!

  • Completing install of ruby 1.9.3 with Ruby for for Mac OS X 10.7.5 Leopard, Xcode 4.5.2 -- problems with rvm pkg install openssl

    - by user1848361
    First, many thanks in advance for any help. I'm a complete novice with programming and I'm trying to get started with this Ruby on Rails tutorial (http://ruby.railstutorial.org/ruby-on-rails-tutorial-book?version=3.2) I have been trying figure this out for about 7 hours now and since I don't have any hair left to pull out I'm turning to these hallowed pages. I have searched for solutions here again and again. System: Mac OS X 10.7.5 Leopard, Xcode 4.5.2 I installed homebrew and have updated it multiple times I used homebrew to install rvm and have updated it multiple times I installed git The standard ruby on the system (checking with $ ruby -v) is 1.8.7 My problem is that every time I try to use rvm to install a new version of Ruby ($ rvm install 1.9.3) I get the following error: Ruby (and needed base gems) for your selection will be installed shortly. Before it happens, please read and execute the instructions below. Please use a separate terminal to execute any additional commands. Notes for Mac OS X 10.7.5, Xcode 4.5.2. For JRuby: Install the JDK. See http://developer.apple.com/java/download/ # Current Java version "1.6.0_26" For IronRuby: Install Mono >= 2.6 For Ruby 1.9.3: Install libksba # If using Homebrew, 'brew install libksba' For Opal: Install Nodejs with NPM. See http://nodejs.org/download/ To use an RVM installed Ruby as default, instead of the system ruby: rvm install 1.8.7 # installs patch 357: closest supported version rvm system ; rvm gemset export system.gems ; rvm 1.8.7 ; rvm gemset import system.gems # migrate your gems rvm alias create default 1.8.7 And reopen your terminal windows. Xcode and gcc: : I have performed $ brew install libksba and when I try to do it again it tells me that libksba is installed already. When I type "$ rvm requirements" I get: Notes for Mac OS X 10.7.5, Xcode 4.5.2. For JRuby: Install the JDK. See http://developer.apple.com/java/download/ # Current Java version "1.6.0_26" For IronRuby: Install Mono >= 2.6 For Ruby 1.9.3: Install libksba # If using Homebrew, 'brew install libksba' For Opal: Install Nodejs with NPM. See http://nodejs.org/download/ To use an RVM installed Ruby as default, instead of the system ruby: rvm install 1.8.7 # installs patch 357: closest supported version rvm system ; rvm gemset export system.gems ; rvm 1.8.7 ; rvm gemset import system.gems # migrate your gems rvm alias create default 1.8.7 And reopen your terminal windows. Xcode and gcc: Right now Ruby requires gcc to compile, but Xcode 4.2 and later no longer ship with gcc. Instead they ship with llvm-gcc (to which gcc is a symlink) and clang, neither of which are supported for building Ruby. Xcode 4.1 was the last version to ship gcc, which was /usr/bin/gcc-4.2. Xcode 4.1 and earlier: - Ruby will build fine. Xcode 4.2 and later (including Command Line Tools for Xcode): - If you have gcc-4.2 (and friends) from an earlier Xcode version, Ruby will build fine. - If you don't have gcc-4.2, you have two options to get it: * Install apple-gcc42 from Homebrew * Install osx-gcc-installer Homebrew: If you are using Homebrew, you can install the apple-gcc42 and required libraries from homebrew/dupes: brew update brew tap homebrew/dupes brew install autoconf automake apple-gcc42 rvm pkg install openssl Xcode 4.2+ install or/and Command Line Tools for Xcode is required to provide make and other tools. osx-gcc-installer: If you don't use Homebrew, you can download and install osx-gcc-installer: https://github.com/kennethreitz/osx-gcc-installer. Warning: Installing osx-gcc-installer on top of a recent Xcode is known to cause problems, so you must uninstall Xcode before installing osx-gcc-installer. Afterwards you may install Xcode 4.2+ or Command Line Tools for Xcode if you desire. ** NOTE: Currently, Node.js is having issues building with osx-gcc-installer. The only fix is to install Xcode over osx-gcc-installer. So I assume I have to do something with brew update brew tap homebrew/dupes brew install autoconf automake apple-gcc42 rvm pkg install openssl Everything seemed to work fine until "$ rvm pkg install openssl", which returns: Fetching openssl-1.0.1c.tar.gz to /Users/thierinvestmentservices/.rvm/archives Extracting openssl to /Users/thierinvestmentservices/.rvm/src/openssl-1.0.1c Configuring openssl in /Users/thierinvestmentservices/.rvm/src/openssl-1.0.1c. I have tried to install rvm make with something I saw on one forum post but I got a bunch of warnings. If anyone has any suggestions I would be deeply grateful, I am completely in over my head,

  • RHEL 5.5 Yum Update Fails Dependency Error

    - by user65788
    I have 30 different RHEL 5.5 machines that will not update some 33 packages via Yum. Does anyone know why these packages will not install and how to correct this? Yum clean all does not fix the issue, however skip broken will allow other updates to install but I am really after a way to clear this up for good. They are stock boxes with RHEL subscription and not using any yum repositories other than Red Hat's own official repositories. They have not been updated for over a year! yum update Loaded plugins: rhnplugin, security rhel-i386-client-5 | 1.4 kB 00:00 rhel-i386-client-5/primary | 2.8 MB 00:09 rhel-i386-client-5 6607/6607 • What's the equivalent of gcc's -mwindows option in cmake?

    - by Runner
    I'm following the tuto: http://zetcode.com/tutorials/gtktutorial/firstprograms/ It works but each time I double click on the executable,there is a console which I don't want it there. How do I get rid of that console? I tried this: add_executable(Cmd WIN32 cmd.c) But got this fatal error: MSVCRTD.lib(crtexew.obj) : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _WinMain@16 referenced in function ___tmainCRTStartup Cmd.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals While using gcc directly works: gcc -o Cmd cmd.c -mwindows .. I'm guessing it has something to do with the entry function: int main( int argc, char *argv[]),but why gcc works? How can I make it work with cmake? UPDATE Let me paste the source code here for convenience: #include <gtk/gtk.h> int main( int argc, char *argv[]) { GtkWidget *window; gtk_init(&argc, &argv); window = gtk_window_new(GTK_WINDOW_TOPLEVEL); gtk_widget_show(window); gtk_main(); return 0; } UPDATE2 Why gcc -mwindows works but add_executable(Cmd WIN32 cmd.c) not? Maybe that's not the equivalent for -mwindows in cmake?

  • cloud programming for OpenStack in C / C++

    - by Basile Starynkevitch
    (Sorry for such a fuzzy question, I am very newbie to cloud programming) I am interested in designing (and developing) a (free software) program in C or C++ (probably, most of it being meta-programmed, i.e. part of the C code code being generated). I am still in the thinking / designing phase. And I might perhaps give up. For reference, I am the main architect and implementor of GCC MELT, a domain specific language to extend the GCC compiler (the MELT language is translated to C/C++ and is bootstrapped: the MELT to C/C++ translator being written in MELT). And I am dreaming of extending it with some cloud computing abilities. But I am a newbie in cloud computing. (I am only interested in free-software, GPLv3 friendly, based cloud computing, which probably means openstack). I believe that "compiling on the cloud with some enhanced GCC" could make sense (for super-optimizations or static analysis of e.g. an entire Linux distribution, or at least a massive GCC compiled free software like Qt, GCC itself, or the Linux kernel). I'm dreaming of a MELT specific monitoring program which would store, communicate, and and enhance GCC compilation (extended by MELT). So the picture would be that each GCC process (actually the cc1 or cc1plus started by the gcc driver, suitably extended by some MELT extension) would communicate with some monitor. That "monitoring/persisting" program would run "on the cloud" (and probably manage some information produced by GCC e.g. on NoSQL bases). So, how should some (yet to be written) C program (some Linux daemon) be designed to be cloud-friendly? So far, I understood that it should provide some Web service, probably thru a RESTful service, so should use an HTTP server library like onion. And that OpenStack is able to start (e.g. a dozen of) such services. But I don't have a clear picture of what OpenStack brings. So far, I noticed the ability to manage (and distribute) virtual machines (with some Python API). It is less clear how can it distribute some ELF executable, how can it start it, etc. Do you have any references or examples of C / C++ programming on the cloud? How should a "cloud-friendly" (actually, OpenStack friendly) C/C++ server application be designed?
