• Using Visual Studio 2008 to Assemble, Link, Debug, and Execute MASM 6.11 Assembly Code

  I would like to use Visual Studio 2008 to the greatest extent possible while effectively compiling/linking/building/etc code as if all these build processes were being done by the tools provided with MASM 6.11. The exact version of MASM does not matter, so long as it's within the 6.x range, as that is what my college is using to teach 16-bit assembly. I have done some research on the subject and have come to the conclusion that there are several options: Reconfigure VS to call the MASM 6.11 executables with the same flags, etc as MASM 6.11 would natively do. Create intermediary batch file(s) to be called by VS to then invoke the proper commands for MASM's linker, etc. Reconfigure VS's built-in build tools/rules (assembler, linker, etc) to provide an environment identical to the one used by MASM 6.11. Option (2) was brought up when I realized that the options available in VS's "External Tools" interface may be insufficient to correctly invoke MASM's build tools, thus a batch file to interpret VS's strict method of passing arguments might be helpful, as a lot of my learning about how to get this working involved my manually calling ML.exe, LINK.exe, etc from the command prompt. Below are several links that may prove useful in answering my question. Please keep in mind that I have read them all and none are the actual solution. I can only hope my specifying MASM 6.11 doesn't prevent anyone from contributing a perhaps more generalized answer. Situation I have: -a table with User(ID, Name, FirstName, Email) This table is made, so that a users who is registered in two tenants doesn't need to login again. -a table with Tentantuser(ID, TenantID, UserID (FK to table User), UserName, Loginname, Password, Active) This table contains de login en password for one tenant. Example: UserX is registered in TenantA and TenantB UserX logs in on TenantA, with his login and password for TenantA System verifies or login and password are correct in the table TenantUser System validates UserX which userID corresponds to the Id in the table User UserX goes to TenantB and is automatically logged in My problem: How can I create a custom Provider so I can check the login & password in a tenant? For example: public abstract bool ValidateUser(string username,string password); How can I say to my provider on which tenant the user is? How can I change this in something like: public overrides bool ValidateUser(string username,string password, string tenant); ? Or what is another way to solve this issue?

• Cannot find protocol declaration in Xcode

  Hi.. I've experienced something today while I'm building my app. I've added a protocol in my object and assign delegate object on it. I added the protocol on the object that will implement the protocol's method. I've added it in this way as usual @interface MyObject : UIViewController <NameOfDelegate> But the Xcode says that my the protocol declaration cannot be found. I've check my code but I've declared this protocol. I've try to assign MyObject as delegate of other Object. I've edit my code like this @interface MyObject : UIViewController <UITableViewDelegate,NameOfDelegate> but Xcode say again that it cannot found declaration of protocol of NameOfDelegate. I've tried to delete the NameOfDelegate on my code and add assign MyObject as delegate of other object and it goes like this. @interface MyObject : UIViewController <UITableViewDelegate,UITabBarDelegate> No errors have been found. Then I've tried again to add again my NameOfDelegate in the code @interface MyObject : UIViewController <UITableViewDelegate,UITabBarDelegate,NameOfDelegate> At that time Xcode did not find any error on my code. So I tried again to remove the UITableViewDelegate and UITabBarDelegate on my code. @interface MyObject : UIViewController <NameOfDelegate> At that time No error had found but that was the same code I've write before. • "OutputPath property is not set" error occurs only when calling MSBuild in CCNET

  I've made an MSBuild project that simply does an msbuild task with our solution file as parameter. I've defined a BeforeBuild target where I set some properties, and a Build target that executes the msbuild task. I've confirmed that no errors occured when building the msbuild script in the command line console. However, when I use it in the msbuild task in my CCNET project, I keep getting the following error: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.targets (483,9): error: The OutputPath property is not set for project 'MyProject.msbuild'. Please check to make sure that you have specified a valid combination of Configuration and Platform for this project. Configuration='Debug' Platform='AnyCPU'. You may be seeing this message because you are trying to build a project without a solution file, and have specified a non-default Configuration or Platform that doesn't exist for this project. I checked the build log and it seems that the error occurs during _CheckForInvalidConfigurationAndPlatform. It wasn't even able to continue to my Build task! Since the script is only intended to build the solution under Debug/Release and AnyCPU as platform, I tried to add the following lines to my msbuild project: <PropertyGroup Condition=" '$(Configuration)|$(Platform)' == 'Debug|AnyCPU' "> <OutputPath>.\bin\Debug\</OutputPath> </PropertyGroup> <PropertyGroup Condition=" '$(Configuration)|$(Platform)' == 'Release|AnyCPU' "> <OutputPath>.\bin\Release\</OutputPath> </PropertyGroup> I could still build the project without errors in the command line, but CCNET is returning the same error mentioned above. • getting a job in game industry as a developer, just knowing a game engine

  I recently enrolled at a community college for game developement. But I am skeptical about the circulum. I have no experience in the gaming industry so I wouldnt be able to tell rather its a good investment or not. So I am asking you. I dont want to get too much into detail of all the classes I am taking so I will try to be brief. By the time I graduate, I should have a understanding of how a game engine works. I will be working with the unreal engine to develop a Multiplayer game from scratch. So in the process of my final project, I will learn how to work within the unreal engine, Learn python and learn how to use it's API to connect to a remote server and build game mechanics. Overall I will also recieve a associates degree in game development. I learn c++ but not c. The director said he was trying to implement c in the program as well. What I notice is I will not learn how to build a 3d game engine from scratch. They do not teach any AI. I will not learn how to work with the graphics card using a graphic's api such as DirectX or OpenGL. I know building a game engine from scratch is a little complex, but at the same time the track is requireing me to take some advances math courses such a calculus and geotomtry 1 and 2. I also got to take a physic class. I just think thats a little much for just learning how to use the unreal engine but not actually build one or try to learn the anatomy of a game engine. Is this good enough to possibly land my a job in the insdustry. If I left anything out or was not detail, please feel free to ask more questions. Thanks Guys!!

• C#: Streaming an Audio file from a Server to a Client

  I am currently writing an application that will allow a user to install some form of an application (maybe a Windows Service) that will open a port on it's PC and given a particular destination on the hard disk, will then be able to stream mp3 files. I will then have another application that will connect to the server (being the user's pc) and be able to browse the hosted data by connecting to that PC (remotely ofcourse) given the port, and stream mp3 files from the server to the application I have found some tutorials online but most of them are about File Servers in C# and they download allow you to download a whole file. What I want is to stream an mp3 file so that it starts playing when a certain number of bytes are download (ie, whilst it is being buffered) How do I go about in accomplishing such a task? What I need to know specifically is how to write this application (that I will turn into a Windows Service later on) that will listen on a specified port a stream files, so that I can then access the files by something of the sort: http://<serverip>:65000/acdc/wholelottarosie.mp3 and hopefully be able to stream that file in a WPF MediaPlayer. [Update] I was following this tutorial about building a file server and sending the file from the server to the client. Is what I have to do something of the sort? [Update] Currently reading this post: Play Audio from a Stream using C# and I think it looks very promising as to how I can play streamed files; but I still don't know how I can actually stream the files from the server.

• Mimicking the UltraGridColumnChooser's drag & drop ability

  (Infragistics 2008 Vol. 3, CLR 2.0) Infragistics's UltraGrid comes with a column chooser user control, which is simply a vertical arrangement of columns with checkboxes that toggle a column's hidden state. In addition, it allows you to pick a column and drag it directly to the grid so you don't have to manually position it afterwards. (This is particularly handy when you already have a lot of visible columns and have no clue where the new one ended up.) I'm building my own column chooser based on an UltraTree. Getting the checkboxes to behave the same wasn't an issue, but I haven't found a way to drag a column from the tree to the grid and have it accept it. Unfortunately, I've also failed to catch an event (both on the column chooser side as well as on the grid side) where Infragistics's normal column chooser does this properly; the normal drag & drop events never seem to fire.

• iPhone: Can access files in documents directory in Simulator, but not device

  Hi there! I'm writing an app that copies some contents of the bundle into the applications Document's directory, mainly images and media. I then access this media throughout the app from the Document's directory. This works totally fine in the Simulator, but not on the device. The assets just come up as null. I've done NSLog's and the paths to the files look correct, and I've confirmed that the files exist in the directory by dumping a file listing in the console. Any ideas? Thank you!   I'm having a WCF Service that uses wsHttpBinding. The server configuration is as follows : <bindings> <wsHttpBinding> <binding name="wsHttpBinding" maxBufferPoolSize="2147483647" maxReceivedMessageSize="2147483647"> <readerQuotas maxDepth="2147483647" maxStringContentLength="2147483647" maxArrayLength="2147483647" maxBytesPerRead="2147483647" maxNameTableCharCount="2147483647" /> <security mode="None"> <transport clientCredentialType="Windows" proxyCredentialType="None" realm="" /> <message clientCredentialType="Windows" negotiateServiceCredential="true" algorithmSuite="Default" establishSecurityContext="true" /> </security> </binding> </wsHttpBinding> </bindings> At the client side I'm including the Service reference of the WCF-Service. It works great if I have limited functions say 90 Operation Contract in my IService but if add one more OperationContract than I'm unable to Update the Service reference nor i'm able to add that service reference. In this article it's mentioned that by changing those config files(i.e devenv.exe.config, WcfTestClient.exe.config and SvcUtil.exe.config) it will work but even including those bindings in those config files still that error pops up saying There was an error downloading 'http://10.0.3.112/MyService/Service1.svc/mex'. The request failed with HTTP status 400: Bad Request. Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: 'http://10.0.3.112/MyService/Service1.svc/mex'. There is an error in XML document (1, 89549). The maximum nametable character count quota (16384) has been exceeded while reading XML data. The nametable is a data structure used to store strings encountered during XML processing - long XML documents with non-repeating element names, attribute names and attribute values may trigger this quota. This quota may be increased by changing the MaxNameTableCharCount property on the XmlDictionaryReaderQuotas object used when creating the XML reader. Line 1, position 89549. If the service is defined in the current solution, try building the solution and adding the service reference again. Any idea how to solve this????

• Data Modeling: Logical Modeling Exercise

  In trying to learn the art of data storage I have been trying to take in as much solid information as possible. PerformanceDBA posted some really helpful tutorials/examples in the following posts among others: is my data normalized? and Relational table naming convention. I already asked a subset question of this model here. So to make sure I understood the concepts he presented and I have seen elsewhere I wanted to take things a step or two further and see if I am grasping the concepts. Hence the purpose of this post, which hopefully others can also learn from. Everything I present is conceptual to me and for learning rather than applying it in some production system. It would be cool to get some input from PerformanceDBA also since I used his models to get started, but I appreciate all input given from anyone. As I am new to databases and especially modeling I will be the first to admit that I may not always ask the right questions, explain my thoughts clearly, or use the right verbage due to lack of expertise on the subject. So please keep that in mind and feel free to steer me in the right direction if I head off track. If there is enough interest in this I would like to take this from the logical to physical phases to show the evolution of the process and share it here on Stack. I will keep this thread for the Logical Diagram though and start new one for the additional steps. For my understanding I will be building a MySQL DB in the end to run some tests and see if what I came up with actually works. Here is the list of things that I want to capture in this conceptual model. Edit for V1.2 The purpose of this is to list Bands, their members, and the Events that they will be appearing at, as well as offer music and other merchandise for sale Members will be able to match up with friends Members can write reviews on the Bands, their music, and their events. There can only be one review per member on a given item, although they can edit their reviews and history will be maintained. BandMembers will have the chance to write a single Comment on Reviews about the Band they are associated with. Collectively as a Band only one Comment is allowed per Review. Members can then rate all Reviews and Comments but only once per given instance Members can select their favorite Bands, music, Merchandise, and Events Bands, Songs, and Events will be categorized into the type of Genre that they are and then further subcategorized into a SubGenre if necessary. It is ok for a Band or Event to fall into more then one Genre/SubGenre combination. Event date, time, and location will be posted for a given band and members can show that they will be attending the Event. An Event can be comprised of more than one Band, and multiple Events can take place at a single location on the same day Every party will be tied to at least one address and address history shall be maintained. Each party could also be tied to more then one address at a time (i.e. billing, shipping, physical) There will be stored profiles for Bands, BandMembers, and general members. So there it is, maybe a bit involved but could be a great learning tool for many hopefully as the process evolves and input is given by the community. Any input? Maybe the site would want to sell its own merchandise or even other merchandise from the bands. Not sure a mod to make for that. Would it require an entire rework of the Catalog section or just the identifying relationship that exists with the Band? Attempted a mod to sell both complete albums or song. Either way they would both be in electronic format only available for download. That is why I listed an Album as being comprised of Songs rather then 2 separate entities. U.5) I understand what you bring up about the circular relation with Favorite. I would like to get to this “It is either one Entity with some form of differentiation (FavoriteType) which identifies its treatment” but how to is not clear to me. I was mixing the concept of Identifying / Non-Identifying and Cardinality (i.e. Genre / SubGenre), and doing so inconsistently to make things worse. Associative Tables are not required in Logical Diagrams as their many-to-many relationships can be depicted and then expanded in the Physical Model. I was overlooking the Cardinality in a lot of the relationships The importance of reading through relationships using effective Verb Phrases to reassure I am modeling what I want to accomplish. U.2) In the concept of this model it is only required to track a Venue as a location for an Event. No further data needs to be collected. With that being said Events will take place on a given EventDate and will be hosted at a Venue. Venues will host multiple events and possibly multiple events on a given date. In my new model my thinking was that EventDate is already tied to Event . Therefore, Venue will not need a relationship with EventDate. The 5th and 6th bullets you have listed under U.2) leave me questioning my thinking though. Am I missing something here? U.3) Is it time to move the link between Item and Band up to Item and Party instead? With the current design I don't see a possibility to sell merchandise not tied to the band as you have brought up. U.5) I left as per your input rather than making it a discrete Supertype/Subtype Relationship as I don’t see a benefit of having that type of roll up. Additional Revisions AR.1) After going through the exercise for FavoriteItem, I feel that Item to Review requires a many-to-many relationship so that is indicated. Necessary? Ok here we go for v1.3 I took a few days on this version, going back and forth with my design. Once the logical process is complete, as I want to see if I am on the right track, I will go through in depth what I had learned and the troubles I faced as a beginner going through this process. The big point for this version was it took throwing in some Keys to help see what I was missing in the past. Going through the process of doing a matrix proved to be of great help also. Regardless of anything, if it wasn't for the input given by PerformanceDBA I would still be a lost soul wondering in the dark. Who knows my current design might reaffirm that I still am, but I have learned a lot so I am know I at least have a flashlight in my hand. At this point in time I admit that I am still confused about identifying and non-identifying relationships. In my model I had to use non-identifying relationships with non nulls just to join the relationships I wanted to model. In reading a lot on the subject there seems to be a lot of disagreement and indecisiveness on the subject so I did what I thought represented the right things in my model. When to force (identifying) and when to be free (non-identifying)? Anyone have inputs? EDIT V1.4 Ok took the V1.3 inputs and cleaned things up for this V1.4 Currently working on a V1.5 to include attributes.

• outofmemoryerror when running jar but not when running in netbeans/ apache poi

  I basically have a program that filters records from one excel file to another excel file using the apache poi. My program runs fine when it runs using netbeans. However, upon doing a clean and build and double clicking the .jar file inside the dist folder, it runs for very long( too long!) and gives me the following error( that I got by running the program from command prompt ). Is there any work around for it? I have already increase the heap size to be -Xms1500m inside netbeans before cleaning and building. • Hibernate Query Exception

• Cannot debug views in MVC2 project, getting "The resource cannot be found" error

  I'm running Visual Studio 2008 sp1 on Win7, with MVC2 RTM installed. I created a new MVC2 project using the wizard and am unable to debug specific pages. With webforms and even MVC1, I was able to sit on a View page, hit F5, and then have the integrated web server in VS2008 start on the page I was working on. Very handy for building up app logic. When I try this now I get a "The resource cannot be found" error page. I retried this just now with a stock new MVC2 Web Application project. Here are the steps I took after creating the new project to reproduce: Open up project settings. Under the Web subtab, set the Start Action to "Current Page". Leave all the other settings as is. Open one of the views up (e.g. Account/Register.aspx) Hit F5 to debug the project Note that the browser window which displays shows the error message "The resource cannot be found". The link I saw in my browser for this run was: http://localhost:49471/Views/Account/Register.aspx I did some googling and found suggestions related to ensuring all HTTP server pieces were installed. I double checked and made sure that "HTTP Errors" and "HTTP Redirection" were both installed. If I leave the project setting as it was originally, set to "Specific Page" with nothing in the text box, then routing works and I always get the default home page. I'm hoping this isn't the only option. Thanks!

  There are two similar namespaces and assemblies for speech recognition in .NET. I’m trying to understand the differences and when it is appropriate to use one or the other. There is System.Speech.Recognition from the assembly System.Speech (in System.Speech.dll). System.Speech.dll is a core DLL in the .NET Framework class library 3.0 and later There is also Microsoft.Speech.Recognition from the assembly Microsoft.Speech (in microsoft.speech.dll). Microsoft.Speech.dll is part of the UCMA 2.0 SDK I find the docs confusing and I have the following questions: System.Speech.Recognition says it is for "The Windows Desktop Speech Technology", does this mean it cannot be used on a server OS or cannot be used for high scale applications? The UCMA 2.0 Speech SDK ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd266409%28v=office.13%29.aspx ) says that it requires Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 as a prerequisite. However, I’ve been told at conferences and meetings that if I do not require OCS features like presence and workflow I can use the UCMA 2.0 Speech API without OCS. Is this true? If I’m building a simple recognition app for a server application (say I wanted to automatically transcribe voice mails) and I don’t need features of OCS, what are the differences between the two APIs?

• Blend "Window is not supported in a WPF Project"

  I am having a frustrating time with Blend reporting "Window is not supported in a Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) project." due to unbuildable configurations but can't quite work out how to mangle my way out of it. I've worked out it is probably due to my trying to have a single solution with x86 and x64 configurations. There is no way to tell Blend 2 which is the active Solution Configuration and active Solution Platform. I think it's a bit of a weakness in the configuration system, or maybe the way I've set things up, but I have Debug64 and Debug solution configurations one of each is used with the platform x86 and x64. I also think it's a simple sorting problem - x64 comes before x86 and Debug comes before Debug64 so Blend ends up with an unbuildable config of Debug with x64. When I choose the combination of Debug and x64 in VS, its XAML editor can't load either. The solution is a moderately complex one - there's a pure Win32 DLL, C++/CLI Model project and two other WPF assemblies used by the main WPF project. UPDATE I have ripped all the x64 config out of my solution and rebuilt everything with no effect. I then uninstalled Blend 2 and installed Blend 3 - it doesn't like things either. The Visual Studio XAML editor is still very happy as is the program building and running. (echoes of strangled scream of frustration from oz)

  Given the code below, how do I compare a List of objects's values with a test value? I'm building a geolocation application. I'll be passing in longitude and latitude and would like to have the service answer back with the location closest to those values. I started down the path of converting to a string, and formatting the values down to two decimal places, but that seemed a bit too ghetto, and I'm looking for a more elegant solution. Any help would be great. • Android: Map Overlay Labels

  I am building a MapView and I want my custom overlay items to display the name of the location they are marking when the user taps them, like the Android Maps app. I setup the onTap listener and the floating TextView to hold the location name. I still need to set it up so that it redraws the label when the user moves the map, etc. Anyway, I am wondering if I am reinventing the wheel here. Is there a built-in method I am unaware of? I would think that most implementations of MapView have labels. • Eclipse Blackberry Preprocessor Not Working?

  I've already followed the directions @ http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1383277/using-preprocessor-directives-in-blackberry-jde-plugin-for-eclipse for making sure the blackberry plugin preprocessing hook is (theoretically) enabled. I'm using Eclipse 3.5.1 with Blackberry Plugin 1.1 with BB SDKs 4.7.0 and 4.6.0. I have my preprocessor defines set (and I've tried in both the Project's Blackberry Properties as well as the Workspace Blackberry Build settings), and checked their capitalization and spelling carefully too. I'm fairly confident the actual code to say "this stuff should be preprocessed" is good, because including/excluding preprocessed code seems to work fine on command line builds: //#preprocess --- at beginning of file and then code blocks like this throughout: //#ifndef jde_4_7 /* //#endif //#ifdef jde_4_7 import net.rim.device.api.ui.TouchEvent; //#endif //#ifndef jde_4_7 */ //#endif So what I can't figure out what else could be wrong that would cause Eclipse to not compile in my preprocessed code unless I remove the comments that are supposed to prevent the touch code from building into a build for blackberries that don't support touch. At one point it used to work (and no I haven't updated Eclipse), but sometime in the last couple of weeks it seemed to just stop working. And I'm getting kind of tired of the error-prone process of searching for ifdefs and manually commenting/uncommenting touch code and looking for a better solution while I do testing and initial development requiring testing both touch and non-touch functionality. Any other ideas on what could be wrong or how to fix it?

  I'd like to use a custom dialog built over an AlterDialog to obtain login info from the user. In this manner I first use the layoutinflater to get the layout and then put it in the AlertDialog.Builder.setView() method. • Configuring xUnit test output in Hudson

  I have a simple PoC project in Hudson. The PoC has unit tests written via UnitTest++ and outputs the results as XML for consumption by xUnit to munge into jUnit format. Here are the salient relevant I have my project configured to use MSBuild to build the 2008 solution. The project contains both the dll it is to build and the unit tests which are run as a post-build step. My workspace in Hudson is set to c:\develop\money (Money is the name of the project) and in the Hudson console I can see the workspace folders, the solution file and output folders (/bin, /doc, etc). The test console app outputs its file 'money_unit_tests.xml' to the folder 'reports' (making c:\develop\money\reports). I've restarted Hudson since installing xUnit and setting the workspace. However when I start Hudson building I am given the following message: [xUnit] Starting to record. [xUnit] [UnitTest] - Use the embedded style sheet. [xUnit] [ERROR] - No test report file(s) were found with the pattern 'reports/money_unit_tests.xml' relative to 'C:\.hudson\jobs\Money\workspace' for the testing framework 'UnitTest'. Did you enter a pattern relative to the correct directory? Did you generate the result report(s) for 'UnitTest'? [xUnit] Stopping recording. Finished: FAILURE Why does Hudson seem to think the workspace is in C:.hudson... and not C:\Develop...? What can I do change it? If I can't change it, what can I do to mitigate these changes? (I don't exactly want to hardcode the output for the xml to C:.hudson...)

• "Error generating Win32 resource" in Visual Studio, Windows 7 x64

  My co-developers and I recently upgraded machines to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Some of us are seeing a new error we used to never see when building solutions in Visual Studio (happens in both 2008 and 2010): Error generating Win32 resource: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. It always points to some temp file in our output folder, for example: MyProject\obj\Debug\CSC5123.tmp This happens about once every four or so builds. We then will try to run the same exact build again, and it will usually succeed. In some cases though, it will fail again on the same project, and in same cases, it will fail on a different project. There's really no rhyme or reason to it. But it's very frustrating, especially when it doesn't happen until the build has been running for 20 or so seconds. This also doesn't happen to all of our coworkers. It happens to about one out of four developers. For the one, it happens about one of four builds, and for the other three, it never happens. Oh, and did I mention we're all using machines built from the same image? :) Thanks in advance for any direction you can provide.

• Notification Email Best Practices--From Server Setup to Programming

  All, I'm in the process now of building a SaaS tool that allows network admins to generate notification emails to the members of the end-users of our platform (among many many other things). I'm running into a bit of an "out of my expertise" wall, as I know there are a lot of variables involved with configuring an application that can: Run in a distributed way via load balancing and still-- Leverage a single mail server for sending notification emails Process unsubscribe requests Avoid any ISP blacklisting in the process. If anyone has the time and has done this before, I'd love if you could walk me through the A-Z of best practices both from a configuration perspective and an execution perspective for generating these emails (anything from necessary DNS settings to ideal SMTP setup and configuration) Currently, our application generates email via Google Apps using the PHPMailer class. While this works well, it doesn't queue messages (potential for timeout problems if any of our clients amass a very large list of end-users), and Google limits the amount of allowed generated email messages to 500/day. I know this is a lofty question, but any guidance you could provide would be smashing and a big help as we work through this hurtle in our beta development stage. Thanks!

• Can aptitude for learning Programming paradigms be influenced by culture or native language's gramma

  It is well known that different people have different aptitudes regarding various programming paradigms (e.g. some people have trouble learning non-procedural, especially functional languages. Some people have trouble understanding pointers - see Joel Spolsky's blog for musings on that. Some people have trouble grasping recursion). I was recently reading about a study that looked at how the grammar of someone's native language affected their speed of learning math. Can't find that article now but a quick googling found this reference. That led me to wondering whether someone's native culture or first language might affect their aptitude towards various programming paradigms. I'm more curious about positive influences - e.g. some trait that make it easier/faster for someone to learn a particular paradigm, for example native language grammar being very recursion-oriented. To be clear, I'm looking for how culture/language grammare may affect the difference between aptitude of the same person towards various paradigms as opposed to how it affects overall aptitude towards programming between different persons. Important: the only answers I'm interested in are either references to scientific studies, or personal observations from someone intimately familiar with a particular culture/language, including from their own experience. E.g. I'm not interested in your opinion of how Chinese being your first language affects anything unless you speak Chinese or worked with extremely large set of Chinese-native programmers extensively. I'm OK with your guesstimates not based on scientific studies, but please be sure to supply your reasoning about plausible causes of your observation. I'm not interested in culture-bashing (any such commends will be deleted or flagged for deletion). I'm also not particularly interested in culture-building - we all know Linus is from Finland and Tetris was written in Russia and Larry Wall is an American. Any culture/nation can produce a brilliant mind in any discipline. I'm interested in averages.
