• JMS message. Model to include data or pointers to data?

  I am trying to resolve a design difference of opinion where neither of us has experience with JMS. We want to use JMS to communicate between a j2ee application and the stand-alone application when a new event occurs. We would be using a single point-to-point queue. Both sides are Java-based. The question is whether to send the event data itself in the JMS message body or to send a pointer to the data so that the stand-alone program can retrieve it. Details below. I have a j2ee application that supports data entry of new and updated persons and related events. The person records and associated events are written to an Oracle database. There are also stand-alone, separate programs that contribute new person and event records to the database. When a new event occurs through any of 5-10 different application functions, I need to notify remote systems through an outbound interface using an industry-specific standard messaging protocol. The outbound interface has been designed as a stand-alone application to support scalability through asynchronous operation and by moving it to a separate server. The j2ee application currently has most of the data in memory at the time the event is entered. The data would consist of approximately 6 different objects; a person object and some with multiple instances for an average size in the range of 3000 to 20,000 bytes. Some special cases could be many times this amount. From a performance and reliability perspective, should I model the JMS message to pass all the data needed to create the interface message, or model the JMS message to contain record keys for the data and have the stand-alone Java application retrieve the data to create the interface message?

• NULL pointer dereference in swiotlb_unmap_sg_attrs() on disk IO

  I'm getting an error I really don't understand when reading or writing files using a PCIe block device driver. I seem to be hitting an issue in swiotlb_unmap_sg_attrs(), which appears to be doing a NULL dereference of the sg pointer, but I don't know where this is coming from, as the only scatterlist I use myself is allocated as part of the device info structure and persists as long as the driver does. There is a stacktrace to go with the problem. It tends to vary a bit in exact details, but it always crashes in swiotlb_unmap_sq_attrs(). I think it's likely I have a locking issue, as I am not sure how to handle the locks around the IO functions. The lock is already held when the request function is called, I release it before the IO functions themselves are called, as they need an (MSI) IRQ to complete. The IRQ handler updates a "status" value, which the IO function is waiting for. When the IO function returns, I then take the lock back up and return to request queue handling. • Issue with GCD and too many threads

  I have an image loader class which provided with NSURL loads and image from the web and executes completion block. My issue is that I have perhaps 50 images and I call downloadImageWithURL:completion: method for all of them and when I use global queue instead of _queue my app eventually crashes and I see there are 85+ threads. Can the problem be that my calling dispatch_get_global_queue(DISPATCH_QUEUE_PRIORITY_HIGH, 0) 50 times in a row makes GCD create too many threads? I thought that gcd handles all the treading and makes sure the number of threads is not huge, but if it's not the case is there any way I can influence number of threads?

• ajax on parked domain

  I'm currently writing this jquery and for some reason (I don't know why) it works on the normal domain, but on the parked domain it doesn't. Normal domain - http://www.thefinishedbox.com Parked domain - http://www.tfbox.com If you scroll down to the colony news and hit the click me link you'll see it will retrieve data via jquery ajax on the Normal domain, but on the parked domain it wont. • How to find sum of node's value for given depth in binary tree?

  I've been scratching my head for several hours for this... problem: Binary Tree (0) depth 0 / \ 10 20 depth 1 / \ / \ 30 40 50 60 depth 2 I am trying to write a function that takes depth as argument and return the sum of values of nodes of the given depth. For instance, if I pass 2, it should return 180 (i.e. 30+40+50+60) I decided to use breath first search and when I find the node with desired depth, sum up the value, but I just can't figure out how to find out the way which node is in what depth. My most ideal approach would be to have these chain somehow (ie. func2 waits for func1 and func3 waits for func2) but this needs to happen dynamically and the functions will all have different durations. I'm using jQuery so I thought that perhaps "queue()" may help but I haven't worked with it much. A main concern is to not add any scope/callbacks to the functions within the object. I'd rather somehow enclose them within a parent function to execute within the loop in order to create the callback/chaining. Here's an example of what I've got now, but dumbed down. • Heap Algorithmic Issue

  I am having this algorithmic problem that I want to discuss about. Its not about find a solution but about optimization in terms of runtime. So here it is: Suppose we have a race court of Length L and a total of N cars that participate on the race. The race rules are simple. Once a car overtakes an other car the second car is eliminated from the race. The race ends when no more overtakes are possible to happen. The tricky part is that the k'th car has a starting point x[k] and a velocity v[k]. The points are given in an ascending order, but the velocities may differ. What I've done so far: Given that a car can get overtaken only by its previous, I calculated the time that it takes for each car to reach its next one t = (x[i] - x[i+1])/(v[i] - v[i+1]) and I insert these times onto a min heap in O(n log n). So in theory I have to pop the first element in O(logn), find its previous, pop it as well , update its time and insert it in the heap once more, much like a priority queue. My main problem is how I can access specific points of a heap in O(log n) or faster in order to keep the complexity in O(n log n) levels. This program should be written on Haskell so I would like to keep things simple as far as possible EDIT: I Forgot to write the actual point of the race.   Is there a way to rotate an html table? • Is there a Form.Invoke() method?

  Hi, I am new to multithreading (and also to C#) so I hope this is not obvious: In my Form (WinForms application, .NET 2.0) I subscribed to an event that is raised by another object, and on handling this event I wish to change several Controls on my Form. As this event is raised in another thread than the main (UI) thread I want to marshal the call to the Form's thread. I understand I could use the Control.Invoke() method on any Control that I want to change, but as there are several of them I do not wish to do that. When searching the internet I found hints that the Form class itself provides an Invoke() method. See for example: http://marioschneider.blogspot.com/2008/04/invoke-methode-fr-multithread.html (Sorry, as I am I new user I can't seem to post more than one link. I will add more links as comments if possible.) With that, I could just wrap my event handler and then use it as if it was called on the UI thread. However, this doesn't seem to be defined in my environment, and in MSDN's System.Windows.Forms.Form documentation there's also no sign of it. Does this method exist in the .NET-Framework? I find it hard to believe that Form would not supply such a method, as it uses the same message queue the Controls on it do. (Or am I missing something here?)

• Batch file recursively find files and rar them

  Hi there, I have a Parent Directory which hosts many sub directories, and in every sub directory there is .mpg movies. Some of the directories might contain one or more .mpg movies. I would like to automate the process below, which I have been doing manually. Step One If the directory has more than 1 .mpg file, I create separates directories for each and move each file into its directory, naming the directory as per the name of the file. Step Two I rar each video file in its directory as per one of my profiles, by that it splits the movie into 50MB parts, test the archive, delete the source, and instructs winrar to wait if another rar is executing. I am doing this so I can queue jobs manually. Step Three After having all the rars in the sub directories, I start creating a checksum for every directory, therefore leaving checksum.sfv in every directory. Step Four I copy the parent folder and its sub directories to my external drives. I was hoping that someone could assist me in creating a script. I was able to automate the process of creating directories as per the name of the file, and moving the file. However, I never succeeded in automating Step two. I am using the below software Winrar from rarlabs exf from exactfile Appreciate your assistance.

• What is the point of having a key_t if what will be the key to access shared memory is the return value of shmget()?

  When using shared memory, why should we care about creating a key key_t ftok(const char *path, int id); in the following bit of code? key_t key; int shmid; key = ftok("/home/beej/somefile3", 'R'); shmid = shmget(key, 1024, 0644 | IPC_CREAT); From what I've come to understand, what is needed to access a given shared memory is the shmid, not the key. Or am I wrong? If what we need is the shmid, what is the point in not just creating a random key every time? Edit @link text one can read: What about this key nonsense? How do we create one? Well, since the type key_t is actually just a long, you can use any number you want. But what if you hard-code the number and some other unrelated program hardcodes the same number but wants another queue? The solution is to use the ftok() function which generates a key from two arguments. Reading this, it gives me the impression that what one needs to attach to a shared-memory block is the key. But this isn't true, is it? Thanks

• How can I get back into my main processing thread?

  I have an app that I'm accessing a remote website with NSURLConnection to run some code and then save out some XML files. I am then accessing those XML Files and parsing through them for information. The process works fine except that my User Interface isn't getting updated properly. I want to keep the user updated through my UILabel. I'm trying to update the text by using setBottomBarToUpdating:. It works the first time when I set it to "Processing Please Wait..."; however, in the connectionDidFinishLoading: it doesn't update. I'm thinking my NSURLConnection is running on a separate thread and my attempt with the dispatch_get_main_queue to update on the main thread isn't working. How can I alter my code to resolve this? • Java: GatheringByteChannel advantages?

  I'm wondering when the GatheringByteChannel's write methods (taking in an array of ByteBuffers) have advantages over the "regular" WritableByteChannel write methods. I tried a test where I could use the regular vs. the gathering write method on a FileChannel, with approx 400KB/sec total in ByteBuffers of between 23-27 bytes in length in both cases. Gathering writes used an array of 64. The regular method used up approx 12% of my CPU, and the gathering method used up approx 16% of my CPU (worse than the regular method!) This tells me it's NOT useful to use gathering writes on a FileChannel around this range of operating parameters. Why would this be the case, and when would you ever use GatheringByteChannel? (on network I/O?) • What's a good way to integrate FB and Twitter into my commenting system (PHP)

  Hi Guys, There are so many options out there for integration. At the moment I have comments that are posted on my articles, where a user types in their name and the comment. This is then sent to a moderation queue and displayed when approved. I want to acheive this: Comment with facebook login (ie facebook account listed as the name w/ avatar) Comment with twitter login (ie twitter account name listed as the name w/ avatar) Push comment from my website to twitter and to facebook I could go down a few paths as far as I know: Integrate with XFBML, which I don't like because I find it annoying to setup and messy. Integrate facebook comments system, although this can't push to twitter, or allow me to moderate comments from my backend (as far as I can tell i'd have to login under the facebook login for the dev account to moderate the comment) Find a php class that does open auth and integrate with both face book and twitter at once find a pre-created php class Anyone have a solution that will bias: a. easy to integrate b. lightweight c. is free Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

• Update MySQl table onDrop?

  Hi all. I am writing a PHP/MySQL application (using CodeIgniter) that uses some jQuery functionality for dragging table rows. I have a table in which the user can drag rows to the desired order (kind of a queue for which I need to preserve the rank of each row). I've been trying to figure out how to (and whether I should) update the database each time the user drops a row, in order to simplify the UI and avoid a "Save" button. I have the jQuery working and can send a serialized list back to the server onDrop, but is it good design practice to run an update query this often? The table will usually have 30-40 rows max, but if the user drags row 1 far down the list, then potentially all the rows would need to be updated to update the rank field. I've been wondering whether to send a giant query to the server, to loop through the rows in PHP and update each row with its own Update query, to send a small serialized list to a stored procedure to let the server do all the work, or perhaps a better method I haven't considered. I've read that stored procedures in MySQL are not very efficient and use a separate process for each call. Any advice as to the right solution here? Thanks very much for your help!

• Drupal 7: How can I create a key/value field(or field group, if that's even possible)?

  Let's say I'm creating some app documentation. In creating a content type for functions, I have a text field for name, a box for a general description, and a couple other basic things. Now I need something for storing arguments to the function. Ideally, I'd like to input these as key-value pairs, or just two related fields, which can then be repeated as many times as needed for the given function. But I can't find any way to accomplish this. The closest I've gotten is an abandonded field multigroup module that says to wait for CCK3, which hasn't even produced an alpha yet as far as I can tell and whose project page makes no obvious mention of this multi-group functionality. I also checked the CCK issue queue and don't think I saw it in there, either. Is there a current viable way of doing this I'm not seeing? Viable includes "you're thinking of this the wrong way and do X instead." I've considered using a "Long text and summary" field, but that smells hackish and I don't know if I'd be setting myself up for side-effects. I'm new to Drupal.

• How to open multiple socket connections and do callbacks in PHP

  I'm writing some code which processes a queue of items. The way it works is this: Get the next item flagged as needing to be processed from the mysql database row. Request some info from a google API using Curl, wait until the info is returned. Do the remainder of the processing based on the info returned. Flag the item as processed in the db, move onto the next item. The problem is that on step # 2. Google sometimes takes 10-15 seconds to return the requested info, during this time my script has to remain halted and wait. I'm wondering if I could change the code to do the following instead: Get the next 5 items to be processed as usual. Request info for items 1-5 from google, one after the other. When the info for item 1 is returned, a 'callback' should be done which calls up a function or otherwise calls some code which then does the remainder of the processing on items 1-5. And then the script starts over until all pending items in db are marked processed. How can something like this be achieved?

• Can I use a method as a lambda?

  I have an interface the defines a group of conditions. it is one of several such interfaces that will live with other models. These conditions will be called by a message queue handler to determine completeness of an alert. All the alert calls will be the same, and so I seek to DRY up the enqueue calls a bit, by abstracting the the conditions into their own methods (i question if methods is the right technique). There are a variety of tools available to help you and Support diagnose SOA Suite issues in 11g but it can be confusing as to which tool is appropriate for a particular situation and what their relationships are. This blog post will introduce the various tools and attempt to clarify what each is for and how they are related. Let's first list the tools we'll be addressing: RDA: Remote Diagnostic Agent DFW: Diagnostic Framework Selective Tracing DMS: Dynamic Monitoring Service ODL: Oracle Diagnostic Logging ADR: Automatic Diagnostics Repository ADRCI: Automatic Diagnostics Repository Command Interpreter WLDF: WebLogic Diagnostic Framework This overview is not mean to be a comprehensive guide on using all of these tools, however, extensive reference materials are included that will provide many more details on their execution. Another point to note is that all of these tools are applicable for Fusion Middleware as a whole but specific products may or may not have implemented features to leverage them. A couple of the tools have a WebLogic Scripting Tool or 'WLST' interface. WLST is a command interface for executing pre-built functions and custom scripts against a domain.   This is a pretty common occurrence. Every two days or so iTunes will crash on me with this error. FYI, 1073741824 is 2^30, which is gigabyte. The crash log is below if you're interested. • Disk is spinning down each minute, unable to disable it

  I played with spindown and APM settings of my Samsung discs and now they spin down every minute. I want to disable it, but it seems it does not accept any of the spindown time or APM values. Nothing works, it's all the same. Please help what values should be proper for it. But I do not know where to read the settings from. The hdparm only shows this: Advanced power management level: 60 Recommended acoustic management value: 254, current value: 0 Edit: It seems the issue was tuned daemon in RHEL6. It was too aggressive, I turned off disc tuning and it seems they are no longer spinning down.
