   IDG News Service - Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said Oracle will continue to bet on selling high-end custom hardware for its software products, even amidst a growing trend toward roomfuls of cheap, generic servers. "You have to be in the hardware business and the software business, to get the best possible system," he said during a keynote speech at Oracle's OpenWorld conference in Tokyo. "We believe it's the right idea, we believe it's the next generation of computing, we believe all the pieces have to fit together." Ellison, as he has often done in the past, repeatedly referred to Apple as his "favorite example" of such tight integration. He was a close friend of Apple's co-founder Steve Jobs and previously served on Apple's board of directors.He said sales of Oracle's advanced servers were booming and generating around a billion dollars a year in revenue for the company, which has until recent years focused almost exclusively on its software offerings. With the explosion of popular online services and the increasing number of mobile devices that access them, demand is high for databases that can quickly respond to high numbers of relatively simple queries. While Oracle is pitching its expensive, finely-tuned machines to meet this requirement, Internet behemoths like Google, Facebook and Microsoft increasingly rely on armies of low-cost, easily replaceable servers. Ellison emphasized the high specifications of Oracle's servers, which come packed with multiple terabytes of RAM and flash-based storage for speed. Such machines are superior to large server farms, he said, because they require far less electricity and floor space, and are also cost competitive. When asked about whether purchasing such products would lock customers in to expensive hardware from Oracle, he promised that the company's software would always run on "multiple hardware sources."  Ellison, who spoke from Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital, was shown live online via webcast. • Optimize GROUP BY&ORDER BY query

  I have a web page where users upload&watch videos. Last week I asked what is the best way to track video views so that I could display the most viewed videos this week (videos from all dates). Now I need some help optimizing a query with which I get the videos from the database. The relevant tables are this: video (~239371 rows) VID(int), UID(int), title(varchar), status(enum), type(varchar), is_duplicate(enum), is_adult(enum), channel_id(tinyint) signup (~115440 rows) UID(int), username(varchar) videos_views (~359202 rows after 6 days of collecting data, so this table will grow rapidly) videos_id(int), views_date(date), num_of_views(int) The table video holds the videos, signup hodls users and videos_views holds data about video views (each video can have one row per day in that table). I have this query that does the trick, but takes ~10s to execute, and I imagine this will only get worse over time as the videos_views table grows in size. SELECT v.VID, v.title, v.vkey, v.duration, v.addtime, v.UID, v.viewnumber, v.com_num, v.rate, v.THB, s.username, SUM(vvt.num_of_views) AS tmp_num FROM video v LEFT JOIN videos_views vvt ON v.VID = vvt.videos_id LEFT JOIN signup s on v.UID = s.UID WHERE v.status = 'Converted' AND v.type = 'public' AND v.is_duplicate = '0' AND v.is_adult = '0' AND v.channel_id <> 10 AND vvt.views_date >= '2001-05-11' GROUP BY vvt.videos_id ORDER BY tmp_num DESC LIMIT 8 And here is a screenshot of the EXPLAIN result: So, how can I optimize this?

  hey guys, i am having problems implementing my php/mysql code into a jgrowl if you are familiar with jgrowl you will know it delivers notifications like Growl does for OS X i am trying to get it read all the records from my table but at the moment it is only displaying one record as a notification and it loops through it 4 times another problem is that if i have 5 rows in the table then jgrowl will only display 4 notifications are going to be viewed how do i get it to view all the records in the table as notifications and how do i display the total number of records (5) as notifications and account for the missing one at the moment thanking you guys in advance... • SQL query: Delete a entry which is not present in a join table?

  Hi, I’m going to delete all users which has no subscription but I seem to run into problems each time I try to detect the users. My schemas look like this: Users = {userid, name} Subscriptionoffering = {userid, subscriptionname} Now, what I’m going to do is to delete all users in the user table there has a count of zero in the subscriptionoffering table. Or said in other words: All users which userid is not present in the subscriptionoffering table. I’ve tried with different queries but with no result. I’ve tried to say where user.userid <> subscriptionoffering.userid, but that doesn’t seem to work. Do anyone know how to create the correct query? Thanks Mestika

  Oracle has released a new version 11.1.1.7.0 for their Oracle Fusion Middleware product line. This version includes Patch Set #6 (PS6) for Oracle SOA Suite 11g R1, with a big list of improvements and fixes for each component in that suite. In this post we will highlight some of the interesting updates with regards to troubleshooting, performance, reliability and scalability. Infrastructure/Purging scripts Database growth is a common problem for large-scale Oracle SOA Suite deployments. Oracle already provides multiple purging strategies for the SOA Suite runtime database. This patch set includes two new scripts for purging most of the runtime data: Table Recreation Script (TRS): This script can be used to reclaim as much database space as possible, while still retaining the open instances. It can be used as a corrective action for databases that grew excessively, for example when purging was not performed at all. This should be used as a single corrective action only; the script does not replace the normal purging scripts. Truncate script: Remove all records from the SOA Suite runtime tables without dropping the tables. This script can be used for cloning SOA Suite environments without copying the instance data, or for recreating test scenarios by cleaning all the runtime data. The Oracle SOA Suite Administrator's guide contains a table with the available purging strategies. Diagnostic dumps Using WLST you could already dump diagnostic information about various components of the SOA Suite. This version adds support to retrieve more information on BPEL and Adapters from the command-line. Diagnostic dumps for BPEL New diagnostic dumps are available for BPEL to get information on thread pools, average processing time for BPEL components, and average waiting times for asynchronous instances. This information can be very useful for performance analysis or troubleshooting. With WLST this information can be retrieved from the command-line and included for monitoring or reporting.   while my friends and I planning to run our own website, we're confused about the encryption where hackers can TAPPING or in social engineering it's WIRE TAPPING, but I don't know how do they call it in Computers today... Well guys, I just want to know how encryption works with websites if we are using PHP+MYSQL? Is it ok to use user login ---- (PHP) encrypt inputted value then (PHP) will decrypt and validate it going to (MySQL) user login ---- (PHP) encrypt inputted value and decrypt the (MySQL) data if they are similar... Is it similar if we use $_SESSION without encryption inside PHP going to MySQL?or PHP encryption also helps the manipulation of binaries?..I'm so confused T_T... In regards to what I stated above, can a hacker hook the data if the server uses $_SESSION? Is $_SESSION safe?... IF THE HACKER CAN HOOK it? is it necessary to use SSL on our website? and why do some Merchandise websites use SSL and likewise facebook also uses SSL? what is the best suit for you if there is no SSL? encrypting the DATA using PHP going to MySQL or even without encryption while the PHP server uses $_SESSION?...

• mysql query execution time - can i get this in milliseconds?

  I'm comparing a few different approaches to getting some data in mysql, directly at the console, using the SQL_NO_CACHE option to make sure mysql keeps running the full query every time. Mysql gives me the execution time back in seconds, to two decimal places. I'd really like to get the result back in milliseconds (ideally to one or two decimal places), to get a better idea of improvements (or lack of). This code works fine except that I also want to get results where there are 0 matching rows in Recipient. I want 15 rows (= the number of events) but I get 2 rows, one with a count of 1 and one with a count of 2 (which is appropriate for an inner join as there are 3 rows in the sample Recipient table, one for one EventID and two for another EventID). I thought that either a LEFT join or an OUTER join was what I was looking for, but I know that I'm not quite getting how the tables are actually joined. A LEFT join there gives me one more row with 0, which happens to be EventID 1 (first thing in the table), but that's all. Errors advise me that I can't just change that INNER join to an OUTER. I tried some parenthesizing and some subselects and such but can't seem to make it work.
