Business Layer Design in J2EE Project

Currently the project on which I am working is being developed with Spring, Hibernate and struts. The business layer consists of simple java beans with no behavior in them only properties and getter and setter methods, the services are written on them which operates on them and call DAO layer methods and all. My questions is that is it object oriented way of designing or simply the procedure way in which the data and the functions on which they operate are not together. Please provide your thoughts and inputs on how the business logic is design and implemented in j2ee application, is the domain model contains business methods or are they simply dumb objects which have only data and services written on to them.

Adserving Service for specific ads [on hold]

I am looking into adserving services for a web application that is in development. I know there are the regulars like AdSense, DoubleClick, etc but the client wants the ability to sell of sections of the website to specific advertisers for specific campaigns. I would really prefer not to write this functionality (add, change, set duration, etc) from scratch so I'm looking for an adserving service that will allow specific ads to be uploaded and displayed to the end user. Preferably, one that integrates with a CDN of somesort. Are there services that offer this functionality?

How to Access a descendant object's internal method in C#

I'm trying to access a method that is marked as internal in the parent class (in its own assembly) in an object that inherits from the same parent. Let me explain what I'm trying to do... I want to create Service classes that return IEnumberable with an underlying List to non-Service classes (e.g. the UI) and optionally return an IEnumerable with an underlying IQueryable to other services. I wrote some sample code to demonstrate what I'm trying to accomplish, shown below. The example is not real life, so please remember that when commenting. All services would inherit from something like this (only relevant code shown): public class ServiceBase<T> { protected readonly ObjectContext _context; protected string _setName = String.Empty; public ServiceBase(ObjectContext context) { _context = context; } public IEnumerable<T> GetAll() { return GetAll(false); } //These are not the correct access modifiers.. With GetAll(bool returnQueryable) being marked internal, the children would not be able to see each other's GetAll(bool) method, just the public GetAll() method. I know that I can add a new internal GetAll method to each service (or perhaps an intermediary parent class within the same assembly) so that each child service within the assembly can see each other's method; but it seems unnecessary since the functionality is already available in the parent class. For example: internal IEnumerable<Employees> GetAll(bool returnIQueryable) { return base.GetAll(returnIQueryable); } Essentially what I want is for services to be able to access other service methods as IQueryable so that they can further refine the uncommitted results, while everyone else gets plain old lists. Any ideas? EDIT You know what, I had some fun playing a little code golf with this... but ultimately I wouldn't be able to use this scheme anyway because I pass interfaces around, not classes. So in my example GetAll(bool returnIQueryable) would not be in the interface, meaning I'd have to do casting, which goes against what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm not sure if I had a brain fart or if I was just too excited trying to get something that I thought was neat to work. Either way, thanks for the responses.

WCF Service error on IIS with metadata

Hi, I'm trying to publish a service to IIS, it builds and runs OK on the ASP.NET dev server. When running in IIS I can get to the metadata by navigating to the service or by adding service reference in Visual Studio. IIS: No Session being handed out, but only in production

I've reproduced this in a simple project - details below. It's a WCF service in ASP.NET compatibility mode. What I'm seeing is that when run on the dev machine (Win7), a HTTP session id is available inside the service operation (HttpContext.Current.Session is non-null). But when deployed to the server (Win2k8R2), I get "No session". On both machines the app is configured to use the classic app pool, and the app pools themselves are configured identically as far as I can tell. The only differences I can discern between the two applications is that on the dev box, under "Handler Mappings", ISAPI-dll is disabled (not on the server), and on the server there's a spurious handler called "AboMapperCustom-7105160" (does not exist on the dev box). What should I be looking at next? Am I missing something head-slappingly simple? Please verify the EndpointIdentity specified or implied by the EndpointAddress correctly identifies the remote endpoint. Installing Ruby via rbenv fails

Problem: I installed ruby, but it is not recognized correctly. I'm following the deploying to VPS: https://github.com/railscasts/335-deploying-to-a-vps I am setting my server on ubuntu 12.04 LTS to deploy my rails app. I'm following the railscast on deploying to a VPS, and trying to install ruby through rbenv. It seemed everything was installed correctly, but when I tried to check the ruby version, it gave me errors. How to implement message queuing and handling in AWS with NServiceBus

I am creating a new ASP MVC order application in the Amazon (AWS) cloud with the persistence layer at my local datacenter. I will be using the CQRS pattern. The goal of the project is high availability using Queue(s) to store and forward writes (commands/events) that can be picked up and handled asynchronously at my local datacenter. Then, ff the WAN or my local datacenter fails, my cloud MVC app can still take orders and just queue them up until processing can resume. My first thought was to use AWS SQS for the queuing and create my own queue consumer/dispatcher/handler in my own c# application to process the incoming messages/events. MVC (@ Amazon) -- Event/POCO -- SQS -- QueueReader (@ my datacenter) -- DB Then I found NServiceBus. NSB seems to handle lots of details very nicely: message handling, retries, error handling, etc. I hate to reinvent the wheel, and NServiceBus seems like a full featured and mature product that would be perfect for me. But on further research, it does NOT look like NServiceBus is really meant to be used over the WAN in physically separated environments (Cloud to my Datacenter). Google and SO don't really paint a good picture of using NServiceBus across the WAN like I need. How can I use NServiceBus across the WAN? Or is there a better solution to handle queuing and message handling between Amazon an my local datacenter?

Firstly, could you please explain Oracle's current strategy for ISV partners, globally and in EMEA? "Oracle customers use independent software vendor (ISV) applications to run their businesses. They use them to generate revenue and to fulfil obligations to their own customers. Our strategy is very straight-forward. We want all of our ISV partners and OEMs to concentrate on the things that they do the best – building applications to meet the unique industry and functional requirements of their customer. We want to ensure that we deliver a best in class application platform so the ISV is free to concentrate their effort on their application functionality and user experience We invest over four billion dollars in research and development every year, and we want our ISVs to benefit from all of that investment in operating systems, virtualisation, databases, middleware, engineered systems, and other hardware. By doing this, we help them to reduce their costs, gain more consistency and agility for quicker implementations, and also rapidly differentiate themselves from other application vendors. It's all about simplification because we believe that around 25 to 30 percent of the development costs incurred by many ISVs are caused by customising infrastructure and have nothing to do with their applications. Our strategy is to enable our ISV partners to standardise their application platform using engineered architecture, so they can write once to the Oracle stack and deploy seamlessly in the cloud, on-premise, or in hybrid deployments. It's really important that architecture is the same in order to keep cost and time overheads at a minimum, so we provide standardisation and an environment that enables our ISVs to concentrate on the core business that makes them the most money and brings them success." How do you believe this strategy is helping the ISVs to work hand-in-hand with Oracle to ensure that end customers get the industry-leading solutions that they need? "We work with our ISVs not just to help them be successful, but also to help them market themselves. We have something called the 'Oracle Exastack Ready Program', which enables ISVs to publicise themselves as 'Ready' to run the core software platforms that run on Oracle's engineered systems including Exadata and Exalogic. So, for example, they can become 'Database Ready' which means that they use the latest version of Oracle Database and therefore can run their application without modification on Exadata or the Oracle Database Appliance. Alternatively, they can become WebLogic Ready, Oracle Linux Ready and Oracle Solaris Ready which means they run on the latest release and therefore can run their application, with no new porting work, on Oracle Exalogic. Those 'Ready' logos are important in helping ISVs advertise to their customers that they are using the latest technologies which have been fully tested. We now also have Exadata Ready and Exalogic Ready programmes which allow ISVs to promote the certification of their applications on these platforms. This highlights these partners to Oracle customers as having solutions that run fluently on the Oracle Exadata Database Machine, the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud or one of our other engineered systems. This makes it easy for customers to identify solutions and provides ISVs with an avenue to connect with Oracle customers who are rapidly adopting engineered systems. We have also taken this programme to the next level in the shape of 'Oracle Exastack Optimized' for partners whose applications run best on the Oracle stack and have invested the time to fully optimise application performance. We ensure that Exastack Optimized partner status is promoted and supported by press releases, and we help our ISVs go to market and differentiate themselves through the use our technology and the standardisation it delivers. To date we have had several hundred organisations successfully work through our Exastack Optimized programme." How does Oracle's strategy of offering pre-integrated open platform software and hardware allow ISVs to bring their products to market more quickly? "One of the problems for many ISVs is that they have to think very carefully about the technology on which their solutions will be deployed, particularly in the cloud or hosted environments. They have to think hard about how they secure these environments, whether the concern is, for example, middleware, identity management, or securing personal data. If they don't use the technology that we build-in to our products to help them to fulfil these roles, they then have to build it themselves. This takes time, requires testing, and must be maintained. By taking advantage of our technology, partners will now know that they have a standard platform. They will know that they can confidently talk about implementation being the same every time they do it. Very large ISV applications could once take a year or two to be implemented at an on-premise environment. But it wasn't just the configuration of the application that took the time, it was actually the infrastructure - the different hardware configurations, operating systems and configurations of databases and middleware. Now we strongly believe that it's all about standardisation and repeatability. It's about making sure that our partners can do it once and are then able to roll it out many different times using standard componentry." What actions would you recommend for existing ISV partners that are looking to do more business with Oracle and its customer base, not only to maximise benefits, but also to maximise partner relationships? "My team, around the world and in the EMEA region, is available and ready to talk to any of our ISVs and to explore the possibilities together. We run programmes like 'Excite' and 'Insight' to help us to understand how we can help ISVs with architecture and widen their environments. But we also want to work with, and look at, new opportunities - for example, the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) market or 'The Internet of Things'. Over the next few years, many millions, indeed billions of devices will be collecting massive amounts of data and communicating it back to the central systems where ISVs will be running their applications. The only way that our partners will be able to provide a single vendor 'end-to-end' solution is to use Oracle integrated systems at the back end and Java on the 'smart' devices collecting the data – a complete solution from device to data centre. Could not continue scan with NOLOCK due to data movement during installation

I am running Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition R2 x64 and I installed SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition. All of the preliminary checks run fine (Apart from a warning about Windows Firewall and opening ports which is unrelated to this and shouldn't be an issue - I can open those ports). Half way through the actual installation, I get a popup with this error: Could not continue scan with NOLOCK due to data movement. The installation still runs to completion when I press ok. However, at the end, it states that the following services "failed": database engine services sql server replication full-text search reporting services How do I know if this actually means that anything from my installation (which is on a clean Windows Server setup - nothing else on there, no previous SQL Servers, no upgrades, etc) is missing? I know from my programming experience that locks are for concurrency control and the Microsoft help on this issue points to changing my query's lock/transactions in a certain way to fix the issue. But I am not touching any queries? Also, now that I have installed the app, when I login, I keep getting this message: TITLE: Connect to Server ------------------------------ Cannot connect to MSSQLSERVER. ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 67) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=67&LinkId=20476 ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ I went into the Configuration Manager and enabled named pipes and restarted the service (this is something I have done before as this message is common and not serious). I have disabled Windows Firewall temporarily. I have checked the instance name against the error logs. Please advise on both of these errors. I think these two errors are related. Thanks

Nginx case-insensitive reverse proxy rewrites

I'm looking to setup an nginx reverse proxy to make some upcoming server moves and load balanced implementations much easier within our apps. Since our servers are all IIS case sensitivity hasn't been an issue, but now with nginx it's becoming one for me. I am simply looking to do a rewrite regardless of case. Infrastructure notes: All backend servers are IIS Most services are WCF services I am trying to simplify the URLs so I can move services around as we continue to build out I can't set my location to case insensitive due to the following error: nginx: [emerg] "proxy_pass" cannot have URI part in location given by regular expression, or inside named location, or inside "if" statement, or inside "limit_except" block in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/test.conf:101 The main part of my conf file where I am trying to handle the rewrite is as follows location /svc_test { proxy_set_header x-real-ip $remote_addr; proxy_set_header x-forwarded-for $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; proxy_set_header host $http_host; proxy_pass http://backend/serviceSite/WFCService.svc; } location ~* /test { rewrite ^/(.*)/$ /svc_test/$1 last; } It's the /test location that I can't get figured out. If I call http://nginxserver/svc_test/help I get the WCF help page to display correctly and I can make all available REST calls. This HAS to be a boneheaded regex issue on my part, but I have tried several variations and all I can get are 404 or 500 errors from nginx. This is NOT rocket science so can someone point me in the right direction so I can look like an idiot and just move on?
