  • Generics and Constrained Polymorphism versus Subtyping

    - by Rahul G
Hullo all. In this (Warning: PDF) presentation on Haskell Type Classes, on slide #54, there's this question: Open Question: In a language with generics and constrained polymorphism, do you need subtyping too? My questions are: How do generics and constrained polymorphism make subtyping unnecessary? If generics and constrained polymorphism make subtyping unnecessary, why does Scala have subtyping?

  • Location detecting tecniques for IP addresses

    - by ilhan
What are the location detecting tecniques for IP adresses? I know to look at the $_SERVER['HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE'] (not accurate but mostly useful to detect location, for example if an IP range's users set French to their browser then it means that this range) belongs to France and gethostbyaddr($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']) (to look country code top-level domain) then may be to whois gethostbyaddr($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']) sometimes: $HTTP_USER_AGENT (Firefox's user agent string has language code, not accurate but mostly can be used to detect the location) But what about cities?

  • ASP.NET variable scope

    - by c11ada
hey all, im really new to ASP.Net and still havnt got my head round most of the concepts, im really having problems with variable, when creating a desktop application, any variable created in code for example int n = 10; this variable will be there until the program is running right. but in asp iv created variables which are supposed to last until the user gets of that page, so for example say i have a page which takes the users value ( call this variable n say the user type in 10) and every time the user presses the next button the code add 10 to this value. so the first time the user presses the next button n= n + 10; what i have found is no matter how many times i press the next button n will always equal 20, because the previous value is not saved !! these values are populated the first time the user enters that page, once the user clicks the next button the content of these values disappear! how can stop this from happening ?? hope this makes sense !! thanks

  • Deserializing classes from XML generated using XSD.exe

    - by heap
    I have classes generated (using xsd.exe) from an .xsd that I can serialize just fine, but when I try and deserialize it, I get the error: {"<XMLLanguages xmlns='http://tempuri.org/XMLLanguages.xsd'> was not expected."} I've searched for a couple of hours and found most peoples problems lie in not declaring namespaces in their xsd/xml, not defining namespaces in their classes, etc, but I can't find a solution for my problem. Here are code snippets for the relevant classes. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <xs:schema id="SetupData" targetNamespace="http://tempuri.org/XMLLanguages.xsd" elementFormDefault="qualified" xmlns="http://tempuri.org/XMLLanguages.xsd" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" > <xs:element name="XMLLanguages"> <xs:complexType> <xs:sequence> <xs:element name="Tier" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="unbounded"> <xs:complexType> <xs:sequence> <xs:element name="L" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="unbounded" type="Language"/> </xs:sequence> <xs:attribute name="TierID" type="xs:int"/> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> </xs:sequence> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> <xs:complexType name="Language"> <xs:sequence> <xs:element name="LangID" type="xs:int"/> <xs:element name="Tier" type="xs:int"/> <xs:element name ="Name" type="xs:string"/> </xs:sequence> <xs:attribute name ="PassRate" type="xs:int"/> </xs:complexType> </xs:schema> And the class: /// <remarks/> [System.CodeDom.Compiler.GeneratedCodeAttribute("xsd", "4.0.30319.1")] [System.SerializableAttribute()] [System.Diagnostics.DebuggerStepThroughAttribute()] [System.ComponentModel.DesignerCategoryAttribute("code")] [System.Xml.Serialization.XmlTypeAttribute(Namespace = "http://tempuri.org/XMLLanguages.xsd")] [System.Xml.Serialization.XmlRootAttribute(Namespace = "http://tempuri.org/XMLLanguages.xsd", IsNullable = false)] public partial class XMLLanguages { private List<XMLLanguagesTier> tierField; /// <remarks/> [System.Xml.Serialization.XmlElementAttribute("Tier")] public List<XMLLanguagesTier> Tiers { get { return this.tierField; } set { this.tierField = value; } } } And a the line in XML causing the error: <XMLLanguages xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns="http://tempuri.org/XMLLanguages.xsd">

  • Good "Modelling & Simulation" book recommendations for programmers?

    - by Harry
I'm a programmer, and have completely forgotten all the advanced engineering Math I studied ~20 years ago at school. I now have an urgent need to learn about Modelling and Simulation. Though the present context is Disease Modelling, I'm not sure if there's such a thing as 'general' modelling and simulation... with concepts / techniques / algorithms that could be used in just about any domain (and not just limited to biology, finance, trade, economic, weather, etc.) Would you have any recommendations that are easy to read by a semi-Math-literate programmer? Basically, I cannot afford to drown myself in too much Math and theory behind M & S, hence this post. Tia...

  • Subscription payment processing with ASP.NET

    - by bobsmith123
I would like to create a subscription based website with users getting charged every month. I know I have to create an account with paypal or authorize.net. Do these payment providers automatically bill the user every month? How would I take care of offering the service free for 30 days and start billing after that? Also, I've heard of middle men services like spreedly, chargify. Where do they fit into the equation? Can someone help me wrap my head around these concepts? Considering, I am based in the U.S but would like to have the payment provider accept any kind of currency. Which payment provider do you suggest?

  • GCD function in matlab

    - by SalemFayad
hi, i am looking for a way to implement the "gcd" function used in matlab in another language but i really cant understand the way it functions. it says in http://www.mathworks.com/access/helpdesk/help/techdoc/ref/gcd.html that: "[G,C,D] = gcd(A,B) returns both the greatest common divisor array G, and the arrays C and D, which satisfy the equation: A(i).*C(i) + B(i).*D(i) = G(i)." but it says nothing about how it calculates C and D. i would be grateful if someone has a clearer idea about this subject! thanks:)

  • When to address managed heap fragmentation

    - by emddudley
I was reading a blog entry by Josh Smith where he used a cache mechanism in order to "reduce managed heap fragmentation". His caching reduces the number of short-lived objects being created at the cost of slightly slower execution speed. How much of a problem is managed heap fragmentation in a managed language like C#? How can you diagnose if it's an issue? In what situations would you typically need to address it?

  • Does Team Foundation Server supports Checkpoints?

    - by marco.ragogna
My dev team used in the past MKS Source Integrity source control and we are not evaluating to migrate to TFS 2010. Some concepts and meaning are a bit different and we need sometime to learn how to do the same things we do before in TFS or how to change our approach. First of all, we used to do Checkpoints for each software release. MKS in this case does a snapshot of all source code files. You can later compare different checkpoints to see the code differences, or extract a whole checkpoint as a build. Does TFS have a similar feature? Do you know where can I read something about it? Thanks in advance, Marco

  • RubyCocoa, what's the point?

    - by totocaster
I was wondering what's the point of using Ruby (or even Python) in Cocoa application development other that not learning Objective-C (which is pretty simple language and will not take to more than few days to learn). I'm new to this and I'm interested why people do this? What are Pros and Cons.

  • Multithreaded Haskell

    - by Ingdas
Hi I'm learning Haskell and I'd like to write some multithreaded programs now to see the performance gains from that in a functional language. I can find some references to it on the internet but never a proper introduction to it. Can anyone point me to a guide which is understandable for someone who knows the syntax fairly well, but is not a wizard in Haskell?

  • 'javadoc' look-a-like, using parser generator?

    - by wvd
Hello all, I'm going to create a javadoc look-a-like for the language I'm mainly using, but I was wondering - is it worth to use a parser generator for this? The main idea to use a parser generator was because I could use templates for the HTML code which could be exported then. Also I could also use PDF templates if I need it. Thanks, William v. Doorn

  • Can I write for .Net 4 using VS2008?

    - by chillitom
Can I write code against .Net 4 and its libraries using VS2008? If so how should I configure it? I realise that VS2008 will probably struggle with language changes such as the dynamic keyword but can I install the version 4 and target it anyway? My only real interest is in being able to use some of the new libraries, in particular I'm interested in the TPL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_Extensions)

  • How can ported code be detected?

    - by NiallJG
If you port code over from one language to another, how can this be detected? Say you were porting code from c++ to Java, how could you tell? What would be the difference between a program designed and implemented in Java, and a near identical program ported over to Java?
