• Security Alert For CVE-2010-4476 Released

  Hello, this is Eric Maurice again. Oracle just released a Security Alert with a fix for the vulnerability CVE-2010-4476, which affects Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. This vulnerability is present in Java running on servers as well as standalone Java desktop applications. Its successful exploitation by a malicious attacker can result in a complete denial of service for the affected servers. While only recently publicly disclosed, a number of Internet sites have since then reproduced details about this vulnerability, including exploit codes, which may result in allowing a malicious attacker to create a denial of service condition against the targeted system. Oracle therefore strongly recommends that affected organizations apply this fix as soon as possible. Please note that a fix for this vulnerability will also be included in the upcoming Java Critical Patch Update (Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011), which will be released on February 15th 2011. Note that the impact of this vulnerability on desktops is minimal: the affected applications or applets running in Internet browsers for example, might stop responding and may need to be restarted; however the desktop itself will not be compromised (i.e. no compromise at the desktop OS level). Oracle therefore recommends that consumers use the Java auto-update mechanism to get this fix. This will prompt them to install the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment 6 update 24 or higher (JRE), which includes the fix for this vulnerability. JRE 6 update 24 will also be distributed with the Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011. • How do I deploy a charm from a local repository?

  I am trying to run the Charm tutorial from the juju documentation by creating a new charm from a local repository. I started by installing the charms from bzr to my local ubuntu 12.04 desktop running in a virtual machine. The new file structure is the following: ubuntu@ubuntu-VirtualBox:~$ find charms/precise/drupal/ charms/precise/drupal/ charms/precise/drupal/hooks charms/precise/drupal/hooks/db-relation-changed charms/precise/drupal/hooks/install charms/precise/drupal/hooks/start charms/precise/drupal/hooks/stop charms/precise/drupal/metadata.yml charms/precise/drupal/README When I install the mysql charm, which was downloaded from the remote charm repository, it works fine. • How can I get Kubuntu to use my Multimedia keys

  I have tried to get Kubuntu to use my multimedia keys, and I cannot figure out how to do this. This feature is default in Ubuntu and in Linux Mint. They just work. I have followed the KUbuntu wiki post on Multimedia keys. I tried to enable Multimedia maps with xmodmap. It did not work. I tried to use the KDE GUI and could not seem to make the function I wanted work. The functions I am trying to get to work are fn+F12 = skip song fn+F11 = previous song fn+F10 = stop fn+ F9 = play/pause. I know this is possible because it worked in Ubuntu and in Mint, but it does not work in Kubuntu. I have submitted a bug report on this issue. Disclaimer: I am using Kubuntu 12.04 I have looked at this post, but Is there a way to enable Ubuntu Keyboard shortcuts in Kubuntu? do not know what to call the keys in that program.

• grub shows same linux image twice

  After a recent update, I get multiple entries for same linux kernel version in the boot menu. I have tried running update-grub2 but it also lists the same linux-image version twice i.e adnan@adnan-laptop:/boot$ sudo update-grub2 Generating grub.cfg ... • Meaning of offset in pygame Mask.overlap methods

  I have a situation in which two rectangles collide, and I have to detect how much did they collide so so I can redraw the objects in a way that they are only touching each others edges. It's a situation in which a moving ball should hit a completely unmovable wall and instantly stop moving. Since the ball sometimes moves multiple pixels per screen refresh, it it possible that it enters the wall with more that half its surface when the collision is detected, in which case i want to shift it position back to the point where it only touches the edges of the wall. Here is the conceptual image it: I decided to implement this with masks, and thought that i could supply the masks of both objects (wall and ball) and get the surface (as a square) of their intersection. However, there is also the offset parameter which i don't understand. • HTML Maps for DataViz

  I don’t talk about data visualisation (#dataviz) much on this blog because, well, because its not something I can claim to be particularly knowledgeable about – that doesn’t stop me from having an opinion about it though. I just stumbled upon an article that compares the media ecosystems of four various technology companies entitled Mapping The Entertainment Ecosystems of Apple, Microsoft, Google & Amazon and apart from being a well-researched and well-written article (not something that the tech press excels in, in my opinion) I was struck by how well the author uses maps to tell a story to the reader. Take the map in this screenshot: Clicking on one of the four icons at the bottom of the map dynamically changes the shaded areas of the map to indicate which countries that company offers their services. Its aesthetically pleasing but moreover it instantly coveys useful information to me. What I love about it most of all though is that its all pure HTML – I don’t need any poxy Silverlight or Flash plugin to view the maps and interact with them – all I need is an up to date web browser (I use Chrome v22 although I tested using IE9 and it worked fine there too). This is how I believe data visualisation should be - conveying useful info in a friction-free way. Maps are a great way of achieving that – I just wish more people agreed with me about calendars as a mechanism for doing the same! @Jamiet

• Today I talk about you

  Some time back I posted a blog entry (mirrored here and here) asking you how you design databases. Out of those responses, my own experience, studies I read, and interviews I conducted, I collected a wealth of data. Thanks for your responses. So what am I going to do with that information? Well, all along I had planned for that to be used today. I am giving a presentation at an event called “TechReady” called “How Your Customers Design Databases”. This is a Microsoft-internal event, where technical professionals like myself, salespeople, and the product team get together to talk about what has been working, what doesn’t, what is coming and hopefully (fingers crossed here) what the product team can do to help us help the SQL Server community. I’ve mentioned before that I teach database design as part of a course I run at the University of Washington. I’m also planning to give a mini-lecture from that series at TechEd 2010, so if you’re coming stop by. I’d love to meet you. So today I talk about you – thanks for the input. • Spotlight on an ACE: Edwin Biemond

  Edwin Biemond is an active member of the ACE community, having worked with Oracle's development tooling and database technologies since 1997. Since then, Edwin has become an expert in many of Oracle's middleware technologies as well, including WebLogic and SOA. In fact, Edwin has become so prolfic that he was named the Java Developer of the Year in 2009. Edwin hails from the Netherlands, where he is an architect at the company Amis, and is also a co-author of the OSB Development Cookbook. He's a proven expert in ADF, JSF, messaging (Edifact / ebXML), Enterprise Service Bus, web services and tuning of application servers and databases. • Music While Coding [closed]

  Hi SO, Generally, while I'm coding, I prefer to listen to some background music. Nothing that'll get me distracted, but something that'll help keep the rhythm and isn't counterproductive when I need to stop coding to debug or to think of a way to solve a small problem that stands in the way of progress. Now, I have read some similar questions on reddit and on SO - specifically: which songs do you find most productive to listen to while coding, Music while programming and more. Sadly a lot of these questions were closed as off-topic, etc. But (1) I don't think this question is off-topic and I think that a lot of programmers can benefit from it. (2) It's a real question. I really want to know what music you guys would recommend because music helps when I'm coding. It's sad that SO: Music to listen to while coding cannot be found and this isn't of much help. I hope this doesn't get closed. PS: I want to turn this into a community wiki, but I don't seem to know how. I'd appreciate any help. Thank you, all. In response to kirk.burleson's comment: In case the question isn't already clear, I'm asking for recommendations/opinions of music to listen to while coding. I would like to know what you listen to when you code so that I can try it too. I am running out of good "coding music" and this is a problem for me because good "coding music" helps me code better.

• Odd Android touch event problem

  Overview When testing my game I came across a bizarre problem with my touch controls. Note this isn't related to multi-touch as I completely removed my ACTION_POINTER_UP and ACTION_POINTER_DOWN along with my ACTION_MOVE code. So I'm simply working with ACTION_UP and ACTION_DOWN now and still get the problem. The problem I have a left and right button on the left of the screen and a jump button on the right. Everything works as it should but if I touch a large area of my hand (the fleshy part at the base of the thumb for instance) onto the screen, then release it and then press one of my arrows, the sprite moves in that direction for a few seconds, and then ACTION_UP is mysteriously triggered. The sprite stops and then if I release my finger and re-apply it to an arrow, the same thing happens. This goes on and on and eventually (randomly??) stops and everything work OK again. • What methods should save/load a game state

  There are a lot of articles about how to save a state of a game and they are pretty good. But I have one conceptual misunderstanding where should I save the state? My game has number of screens and pair of them are MainMenuScreen and MainSceneScreen these are inherited from Screen class. MainMenuScreen is shown at start of the game the MainSceneScreen little later. What is the problem? I navigated to MainSceneScreen, forced Android to stop the application (I change a language settings on the device to achieve it, please let me know if I'm wrong). After that I select the application again and I can see MainMenuScreen is shown. But I want MainSceneScreen to be shown. I suppose I should override resume method. But what class I should override? I have class PsGame that extends Game class of libgdx. I put breakpoints to its resume method and it turned out that method was not called. I investigated the problem and I've found little strange code in onResume method of AndroidApplication class of libgdx: if (!firstResume) graphics.resume(); else firstResume = false; My debugger said firstResume was true and didn't go to *graphics.resume()*line. Sorry for a lot of words but could you answer following question: What did I do wrong? What methods should I override? Thank you in advance.

• Alt+Tab doesn't work when Citrix is in full screen

  I am using 12.04 and in my work we connect to a Citrix XenDesktop. I've installed Citrix Receiver, using this link and it all works perfectly. But, I have a problem. Alt+Tab doesn't work in full screen mode. There are several adjustments you can choose when login in, with the Settings "button" up in the right corner. (Sorry, I couldn't post an image because I'm new.) I like to work with 95% full screen, with the windows key combination in "full screen mode only". This allows me to use the windows combinations when a work in full screen, inside the remote computer (inside Citrix). I can Alt+Tab past the "Citrix computer" when I put it down to 95%. It also allows me to use the "Ubuntu menu" on the left side. But I really can't make this work in Ubuntu. I've tried to put the windows key combination to "remote server only" and yes, it works inside the server, but also only there and the Ubuntu menu stops working. (in example print Screen. I am using this for documentation.) When I try to Tab from one place to another, even when Citrix isn't in full mode, if I stop there and the continue "tabbing" it continues inside Citrix. I want to use windows key combination, but only in full screen mode. Does anyone have a solution to fix in another way?

• usb wifi dongle on ubuntu server, cannot install realtek driver RTL 8188cus

  I got cheap Ebay wifi dongle from HongKong, Im trying to set it up on my ubuntu server. Occasionally need to move server, so it cannot always be connected to router via lan. Anyhow, usb wifi came with a driver cd. I uploaded files to my home directory and tried to run install script (RTL 8188cus): sudo bash install.sh But I get error: Authentication requested [root] for make driver: make ARCH=x86_64 CROSS_COMPILE= -C /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-server/build M=/home/minime/RTL 8188cus/Linux/driver/rtl8192CU_linux_v2.0.1324.20110126 modules make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38-8-server' make[1]: *** No rule to make target `8188cus/Linux/driver/rtl8192CU_linux_v2.0.1324.20110126'. There is another driver folder for linux called: RTL 81XX, which doesn't have install.sh at all! I tried to use make command, but I get: make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop. Any help? this is first time I'm installing driver from source. • make my Ubuntu 12.04 laptop visible on the network

  I'm ecstatically happy with my 12.04 on my laptop after loading it over my MS Vista... but there's just one thing, one little fly in the ointment.... While I can view our 2 Terabyte, shared hard-drive in the lounge (and copy files back and forth) I can't see my PC (when I boot up in Ubuntu 12.04) nor the Lubuntu computer connected to the TV (for movies, Youtube etc). Printing to the HP office jet on the PC doesnt work over the network either. Have had one dubious flirtation with Samba, which seems to be the only thing I've found that will 'work', however halfway through that "installation" everything just ground to a halt, the directions began to stop making sense... I was working from this page. Our Network consists of the following: Our Internet service is wirelessly sent to us from our provider to our dish on a pole. It comes into the house via an ethernet cable. We split it there to a phone, and to 6 other destinations (bedrooms, computers, and to another splitter in the lounge which has a wifi antennae and 4 ethernet ports). one port goes to the Lubuntu OS PC which is connected to the TV the second port goes to the 2 Terabyte harddrive (MS powered 'Mybooklive') (the other two are empty) My Ubuntu 12.04 laptop connects wirelessly to this splitter in the lounge. I know just enough about computers to get myself into an awful mess without too much trouble We usually can view friends' laptops when they get on our network (as they are invariably MS OS's) Our flatmate, who introduced us to Linux's computer is also invisible How can we make our Linux OS based computers visible on the network and share files and printing?

• GitHub: Are there external tools for managing issues list vs. project backlog

  Recently I posted one of my the projects1 on GitHub and as I was exploring capabilities of the site, I noticed they have a rather decent issue tracking section. I want to use that section as a) other people can report bugs if they'd like and b) other people can see which bugs I'm aware of. However, as others have noted, issues list cannot be prioritized in order to create a project backlog. For now my backlog has been a text file, but I'd like to be able to have it integrated so the same information isn't maintained in different places. Having a fully ordered list, which is something we also practice at work, has been very useful as I can open one file, start with line 1 and fire off 2 or 3 items in one sitting without having to go back to a full issues/stories bucket. GitHub doesn't offer this. What GitHub does offer is a very nice and clean API so issues can easily be exported into anything else. I've searched to see if there are other websites (like Trello) that integrate with GitHub issues, but did not find anything. Does anyone know of such a product, service or offline tool? Those that use GitHub, what is your experience in managing backlog? I kinda hate the idea of manually managing two disconnected lists like some people seem to be doing with Wiki project pages. 1 - are shameless plugs allowed no this site? Searched but didn't find a definite answer. If it's bad practice, STOP and don't read further As a developer I got sick and tired of navigating to same set of folders 30 times a day, so I wrote a little, auto-collapsible utility that gets stuck to the desktop and allows easy access to the folders you constantly use.

• Mouse click events are delayed when moving the cursor in xubuntu 12.04

  I am trying out live xubuntu on my samsung n150 (netbook, similar to eeepc). So far everything seems perfect, except for this one thing. When I am clicking the mouse while moving the cursour, the click event is delayed. This is extremely annoying when i try to to move windows, because i end up clicking the window behind the window i am trying to move and thereby changing focus. This goes for all applications. I.e selecting text is difficult. There is no lag in the cursor movement, just the click event. The click event is registered with the new mouse position, not the one when the mouse was clicked. I tried searching for the problem, but all the other cases where either kind of different, or had no solution. EDIT: After testing some more, here are some more information. The click doesn't occur until i stop moving the cursor. If I move the cursor smoothly around, the click never gets through. I have ubuntu netbook remix 10.04 installed, and have no problems with the mouse there. EDIT2: Once I connected a usb-mouse, the problem dissappeared. Dragging now works perfectly with both the track pad and the usb mouse. I will update once I have installed xubuntu and figured out if this is a persistant problem. EDIT3: I have installed, and the problem is still there. It dissappears when I have a second mouse connected however, and after I resume from suspend. My solution for now, is just to keep the dongle connected all the time.

• Computer science curriculum for non-CS major?

  Hi all, I would like to have some ideas for building up my foundation CS skills. I have started programming computers 10 years ago and have made a pretty good career out of it. However, I cannot stop thinking that the path that brought me here was very particular, and if something goes wrong (e.g. I get laid off) it would be harder to find a job here in the US on the same salary level, OR in a top company. The reason I say that is that I am a self-learner; my degree is not in Computer Science so although I master C/C++/Java, I do not have the formal CS and mathematical background that many other software developers (esp. here in the US) have. When I look at job interview questions from Apple, Google, Amazon, I have the impression that I'd flunk those technical interviews at some point. Don't get me wrong, I know my algorithms and data structures, but when things dive too deeply into the CS realm I am in trouble. What can I do to close the gap? I was thinking about a MSc in CS, but will I even UNDERSTAND what's going on there if I'm not a CS undergrad? Should I go back to basics and get a BSc in CS instead? I always tend to go into self-study mode when I want to learn new stuff, but I have the impression that I will need more formal education in CS if I want to have a shot at working at those kinds of companies.   I'm still working on my window cleaning game from one of my previous questions I marked a contribution as my answer, but after all this time I can't get it to work and I have to many questions about this so I decided to ask some more about it. As a sequel on my mentioned previous question, my question to you is: How can I check whether or not a bitmapData contains non transparent pixels? Subquestion: Is this possible when the masked image is a movieclip? Shouldn't I use graphics instead? Information I have: A dirtywindow movieclip on the bottom layer and a clean window movieclip on layer 2(mc1) on the layer above. To hide the top layer(the dirty window) I assign a mask to it. • What to do when the programming activity becomes a problem?

  I once saw a program (can't remember which) where it talked about people "experiencing flow" when they are doing something they are passionate about. When "in flow", they tend to lose track of time and surrounding, concentrating only on their activity at hand. This happens a lot for me when I program; most particularly when I face a problem. I refuse to give up until it's solved. This usually leads to hours just rushing by and I forget to eat lunch, dinner gets pushed into far into the evening, and when I finally look at the clock, it's way into the wee-hours of the night and I will only get a few hours of sleep before having to rise early in the morning. (This is not to say that I'm in flow only when facing a problem - but I find it particularly hard to stop programming and step back when there's something I can't solve immediately.) I love programming, but I hate it when it disrupts my normal routines (most importantly eating and sleeping patterns). And sitting still for so many hours, staring a screen, is not healthy. Please, any ideas on how I can get my rampant programming activity under control?
