• NTUSER.DAT and UsrClass.dat files building up by the thousands, why and can I delete?

  I've noticed that my web server, 2008 Xen VM, gradually loosing free space - more than I would of though from normal use and decided to investigate. There are two problem areas: *C:\Users\Administrator\ (6,755.0 MB)* with files: NTUSER.DAT{randomness}.TMContainer'0000 randomness'.regtrans-ms NTUSER.DAT{randomness}.TM.blf AND C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\ (6,743.8 MB) with files UsrClass.dat{randomness}.TMContainer'0000 randomness'.regtrans-ms UsrClass.dat{randomness}.TM.blf From what I understand these are in-time backups of registry changes. If that is the case I cannot possibly understand why there would be 10000+ changes. (That's how many files there are per folder location, over 20,000 per folder in total.) The files are using almost 15GB of space and I want rid of them, I'm just wondering can I remove them. However, I need to understand why they are being created so I can avoid this in the future. Any ideas why there would be so many? Is there a way I can check to see what is making the modifications? Are they created with login attempts? Are they created in relation to every day Web Server use? etc. and so on

• iScsiPrt error event ID 5

  Event Log: "Failed to setup initiator portal. Error status is given in the dump data." This is being recorded every 3/100's of a second. We are using MS iSCSI Initiator on Windows Server 2003, Dell 2970 w/4GB (PAE). I am sure that this was configured by Dell initially. I have no idea what changes or mods were made since the company installed this machine until now. (I'm a new User so the lovely and vibrant screen images had to be removed. They were quite pretty and I am sure you would have been very moved and appreciative of them.) It appears that everything is installed correctly and the 5TB bound volume is accessible but I have never worked with iScsi before so I plead total ignorance. In searching I have found this to be a fairly sparce and bland documented subject. I'd like two things... First, to get rid of the error msg being logged. MS says it can be ignored if everything is working but it chews up resources logging it and I don't feel comfortable about any errors on my servers. I want to correct whatever is causing this problem. Secondly, being totally green to this, I would like to confirm that the setup is optimized and we are taking advantage of all features available. Although there are 3 NIC's in this machine it appears that the initiator is only configured for the Broadcom BMC5708C NetXtreme II on our 10.90.1.#, the other 2 NICS are 1GB on the 192.168.0.#. Would additional targets improve performance? If someone who is experienced in configuring the Microsoft iScsi Initiator can help I would really appreciate it since, as I mentioned, everything I have come across has not been of any value at all. Error code = 0x8007000b In MS connect this is reported as a bug but MS is unable to reproduce the problem altough when you search the fora I'm not the only one with this problem. So any help is appreciated.

• Dell VRTX - slow cluster shared storage

  I have a brand new Dell VRTX box set up as a Failover Cluster running HA Hyper-V virtual machines. This is my first time setting up clustering, and my first time with one of these boxes, so I'm sure I've missed something. The virtual machines are experiencing high disk latency and bad performance when accessing their VHD(x) files located on a Cluster Shared Volume. The VRTX has 10 x 900 GB 10K SAS drives in RAID 6 configuration, and the VRTX has the redundant Shared PERC 8 controllers. Both blades have full access to the virtual disks. There are two M520 blades installed, each with 128 GB RAM. MPIO is configured for the PERC 8 controllers. Operating system on the blades is Server 2012 (NOT R2). The RAID 6 array is split into a small (8 GB) volume for cluster quorum witness and a large (6.5 TB) volume for a Cluster Shared Volume (mounted on the nodes as C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1) An example of slow disk access: logging into a Server 2012 VM and having Server Manager come up automatically. Disk access goes to 100%, with write speeds at 20 MB or so, read speeds of 500 KB or so, and Average Response Time of over 1000 ms, sometimes spiking at 4000-5000 ms or so. It's the latency that really worries me. Is there something specific I should look at in my configuration? It doesn't seem to matter whether I use VHD or VHDX, dynamic or static.

  Hi there, I'm trying to setup SCOM(System Center Operations Manager 2007 (SCOM) – Platform Monitoring) on my Server 2008 machine using SQL Server 2008 running on the same machine. When I check my prerequisites I get problem on SQL and Active Directory components. (I'm running SQL server 2008 and Server 2008 with active directory not installed) Errors: 1.Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 required. Details: SQL Server 2005 SP1 is the next version of SQL Server. SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, is a complete data and analysis platform for large mission-critical business applications. The link provided in the resolution column is a trial version of the product and is not supported by the Microsoft SQL Server team In order to install active directory needs to be present. Details:Setup failed to verify the presence of Active Directory for this server. I've got a couple of questions I need answering, hope someone can help. Do I need to install Active Directory for SCOM to work? Can I run SCOM with an SQL 2008 Database? How do I get pass these problems?

When I reboot my Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) macbook pro, the service never restarts automatically, even though that is how they are set: The only relevant events I can see are in the System Event Log: Error 6/9/2011 19:47 Service Control Manager 7001 None The Net.Tcp Listener Adapter service depends on the Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service service which failed to start because of the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." Error 6/9/2011 19:47 Service Control Manager 7000 None The Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." Error 6/9/2011 19:47 Service Control Manager 7009 None A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service service to connect. This post suggests that it's something else blocking the port (in the post it's SCCM 2007 R3 Client which I don't use). What else could be the problem? If it's something else blocking the port, how do I figure out what? When I manually start the services, they start correctly. Dependencies are: Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service Net.Tcp Listener Adapter Still no luck, but I think the problem might be that my network connection takes too long to come up. • Windows 7 XP Mode disable time sync

  So I've tried the trick from Virtual PC 2007, adding the following section to the vmc configuration file: <components> <host_time_sync> <enabled type="boolean">false</enabled> </host_time_sync> </components> Later someone suggested VPC doesn't want the components level so added this instead: <host_time_sync> <enabled type="boolean">false</enabled> <frequency type="integer">15</frequency> <threshold type="integer">10</threshold> </host_time_sync> When I start up XP Mode (Microsoft Virtual PC) it completely ignores any of these two configuration changes and if I change the clock it's instantly reset to the host time again. I've also obviously disabled the Windows Time service but as it's not joined to a domain or set up with a source it shouldn't be involved anyway. I need to test an application over a few midnight passes and thought the XP Mode machine would be perfect, so I didn't have to mess with my workstation clock... is there any way to get the VPC guest to not sync time with the host? This is easy in Hyper-V ;p

  Currently I had a situation where I sent an email to [email protected], but when I receive mail from [email protected], it showed as [email protected], with extra '.com' behind the email address, this just happen within this week. Before this, I didn't change any setting, currently I am using Outlook 2010. When I checked the email in webmail, it also showed it as [email protected]. It seem that it has nothing to do with Outlook. However, I also tried on Thunderbird 16.0.1, but still the problem is the same. Has anyone experienced this before? Is the problem caused by the sender or receiver? • Intel 1.83 Mac Mini upgraded to 1.5 gig for Snow Leopard

  Even though I've upgraded countless video cards, RAM, harddrives, motherboards in PCs... this will be my first mac mini RAM upgrade. I've watched the classic "putty knife" video. (Absurd method... but I guess it's what I'm stuck with.) I have a 1.83 Intel-based Mac Mini from 2007-2008, with 1 gig of RAM. (Two 512 sticks) Can I install 1 gig + 512 ? (Or do I have to throw away my existing sticks and buy two 1 gig sticks?) This old machine is rarely used... so I want to spend the absolute minimum on this RAM upgrade. We ONLY use it to run xCode... nothing more. But wanted to increase the RAM so we can install Snow Leopard. I have no idea how many pins the memory has. I printed out over FORTY pages of specs about this machine from "About this Mac"... but didn't find what I needed. • Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

  Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process. • Couldn't upload files to Sharepoint site while passing through Squid Proxy

  Hi all, we have this issue: one of our employees is collaborating with a supplier and he needs to upload documents on a Sharepoint site hosted on the supplier's main site. In our environment we use Squid Proxy to allow people navigate on the net (we have NTLM authentication and users transparently authenticate while using IE and FF). It seems that this specific Sharepoint site is using Integrated Windows Authentication only, and according to some research on the net it seems that this can have troubles with proxies. More specifically, we have tried two Squid versions: with Squid 3.0 we are unable to login to the site (the browser loads an empty page) with Squid 2.7 (that supports "Connection Pinning") we are able to login into the site, move on the different sections BUT.. when we try to upload a file that is bigger than a couple of KiloBytes (i.e. 10KB) the browser loads an error page (i think it's a 401 unauthorized but i must verify it) we've tried changing a couple of Squid options (in 2.7), what we got is that when you try to upload the file you got an authentication box (just like the initial login) and it refuses to go on even if you enter the same authentication credentials. What's really strange is that when you try to upload a small file (i.e. a text or binary 1KB file) the upload succeeds. I initially thought that maybe there was something misconfigured on their Sharepoint site but I've tried also this site: www.xsolive.com (it's a sharepoint 2007 demo site) and I've experienced the same problem. • Drop outs when accessing share by DFS name.

  I have a strange problem, aren't they all! I have a DFS root \domain\files\vms, it has a single target on a different server than the namespace. I can copy a test file set from the target directly via \server\vms$\testfiles and all is well, the files copy fine. I have repeated these tests many times. If I try and copy the files from the dfs root I get big pauses in the network traffic, about 50 seconds every couple of minutes, all the traffic just stops for the copy. If I start another copy between the same two machines during this pause, it starts copying fine, so I know it's not an issue with the disks on the server. Every once in a while the copy will fail, no errors, the progress bar will just zip all the way to 100% and the copy dialog will close. Checking the target folder show that the copy is incomplete. I've moved the LUN to another server and had the same problem. The servers are all 2008 R2, the clients are Vista x64, Windows7 x64 and 2008 R2, all have the same problem. Anyone got any ideas? • Vista Power Management GPO

  Hi, I've created a loopback GPO that has several settings (both computer and user) including a Custom User Interface (Access 2007 Application) and Power Management (has the computer sleep after being idle for 2 min). I'm also filtering so that this policy does not apply to "Admins" - only to "Users". The problem I'm having is when the "Users" login the Power Management settings don’t work, but they do for "Admins". For testing I'm allowing the "Users" to launch Task Manager and use the Run line, so I'll run Explorer and look at Power Management and it shows the settings from my GPO. So I created a test OU with copies of the aforementioned GPO, but removed the Custom User Interface and found the Power Management settings do work for both the "Users" and "Admins". When I add the Custom UI the Power Management settings break for the "User" but continue to work for "Admins". Do the Power Management options need to have User Interface be "Explorer.exe"? Is this a bug or am I doing this the wrong way? BTW the tablets are using Vista SP2. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Matt

• Can I change the file system on the OS partition on Server 2008 R2?

  I have a client using R1Soft Continuous Data Protection backup, and two of the Server 2008 R2 boxes were erroring out with these errors: Unable to obtain NTFS volume data for device '\\?\Volume{f612849e-7125-11e0-8772-806e6f6e6963}': Incorrect function. Unable to discover information for filesytem volume '\\?\Volume{f612849e-7125-11e0-8772-806e6f6e6963}'; Unable to obtain NTFS volume So I backed up all the registry entries with this, {f612849e-7125-11e0-8772-806e6f6e6963}, in it, and deleted them based on some VERY sparse info from R1Soft. I then decided to restore them before I rebooted, and do a system state backup first using MS backup, and even it errored out saying that there were FAT32 partitions. This was a major clue as the only two computers with problems had these FAT32 partitions. I figured if MS backup can't backup something, any other program is likely to have problems. Also, now that I realized the servers had FAT32 partitions on them, the error referencing NTFS takes on more weight. The partitions on both servers have the label "OS", but on one of the computers, it is given a letter, but on the other not. So I am thinking if I just convert the file systems from FAT32 to NTFS, it may solve the backup problem. So the question is this: Can I just convert those partitions, and does anyone have any concrete knowledge of any major downsides, like the servers not coming back up (of course, I would do one at a time)? My thinking is that the answer is probably at least 95% no, but they are production servers, so I wanted to get some second opinions.

• Mouse wheel in VirtualPC (mostly) does not work on 64-bit Windows 7 RC

  I have recently upgraded my laptop from WinXP Pro (32-bit) to Windows 7 RC (64-bit). I have a number of VirtualPC 2007 images that I use for testing on various platforms and looking at beta software. I have installed the 64-bit version of VirtualPC. The images all work with the exception of the mouse wheel within the virtual machine. I have tried this out with WinXP Pro, Windows 7 RC, and Windows Server 2008 images. All are 32-bit and all exhibit the same behavior: a gentle rotation of the wheel does nothing; a quick rotation of the wheel sometimes gets a scroll and sometimes not. I regard this behavior as unusable as I tend to use the mouse wheel a lot. All of this worked just fine on WinXP. I have re-installed the Virtual machine additions on all of the machines. The Windows 7 RC virtual image was created after the upgrade to Windows 7 and the 64-bit version of VirtualPC (just to isolate the possibility that I had corrupted the images during the transition). I have googled, binged, and yahoo-ed. There are scattered mentions of this problem (dating back to VPC 2004) but no solutions. I am aware that I could start up one of these images and then use remote desktop connections to get access to that image. I, in fact, do just that for some development that I am doing; the mouse works just fine. This is acceptable in this case because I spend hours at a time in the development VM. These test environments are different in that I will bring up an image for just a short time: minutes rather than hours. Adding the rdc step is much more significant in these cases. Does anyone have any idea of what to do next?

• Launching firefox on remote server causes local firefox to start instead

  Right, this is strange. I am connecting from my laptop (LMDE) to a remote host (SUSE linux enterprise) using ssh -X. I want to launch a firefox instance running on the remote server so I can have access to webpages on a private network. User@RemoteMachine $ which -a firefox /usr/bin/firefox User@RemoteMachine $ /usr/bin/firefox --version Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.2, Copyright (c) 1998 - 2007 mozilla.org User@LocalMachine $ which -a firefox /usr/bin/firefox User@LocalMachine $ /usr/bin/firefox --version Mozilla Firefox 14.0.1 Now, if firefox is not running on the local machine, everything goes as expected and executing firefox on the remote machine causes a firefox (v 2.0) window running on the remote machine to show up. However, if firefox is running on the local machine a second window of firefox 14.0.1 running on the local machine appears. I have checked top in both machines. In the 2nd case, a firefox process briefely appears on the remote machine and then disappears when the local version of firefox is launched. My questions are the following: What gives? How/why can firefox connect to its existing instance on the local machine? The remote machine appears to have access to the local machine. It, in fact, appears to have the right to execute programs on my local machine. Am I missing something or is this just weird? Is this not a security risk?

So to me there is really no choice between the first two - If I decide to buy the Professional version, I'd rather go for Ultimate itself. Connect to company networks easily and more securely with Domain Join. You can do both in Pro but not in Home Premium. I intend to use my Windows 7 for a small business - just starting up. So I'll be dealing with the following: All kinds of development tools, servers Very important - I will run Virtual Machine Software (MS VPC or VMWare or Sun VirtualBox etc..) My system will be acting as the server for most purposes till I can afford dedicated servers. Connect the system to a variety of network devices (PCs, Printers, etc..)   Our environment prominently featuers an outdated but absolutely mission-critical Win32 application that is not dpi-aware. It is optimized for an 800x600 display. Most of our users now have 17"-20" displays with native resolutions ranging from 1280x1024 to 1680x1050. However, they still operate these displays at 800x600 because the text in this legacy application is otherwise too small. Of course, it also means that nothing quite fits on the screen in Office 2007. Most of our workstations still run Windows XP, but some are on Windows 7 and there are more to come. About one-third of our users run the app remotely via MS Terminal Services, and the remainder run it locally. Is anyone aware of any method that could be used to scale this specific application to about 170%, so that it would fill a 1280x1024 screen, without affecting other applications that work best at the display's native resolution? I know how to do this in Mac OS X, but I have never found a way to do it in Windows. Of course, this ideally would be something that we could push out via Group Policy. I suppose we even could create a custom MSI package to re-deploy the legacy application with some sort of display virtualization layer, if such a thing exists.

• Windows Server 2008 Services won't start after patch

  After installing the run of the mill patches today on a Windows Server 2008 (Running as an AD controller and Exchange 2007 Server) the machine came back up with "configuring updates stage 3 of 3 0% complete". The machine had been kept reasonably up to date so this likely was caused by a very recent patch. At the leaste the following patches were installed: KB973037 KB969947 KB973565 Restarting the server into safe mode and then subsequently rebooting (with no changes made) allowed the computer to restart and I can now log in normally. However none of the critical services start; including but not limited to Exchange, DNS and Terminal Services (Obviously if DNS doesn't start other things will break). I am unable to run Internet Explorer but Chrome will work. There are no meaningful errors in the event logs as to why services won't start. Under KDC I have The Key Distribution Center (KDC) cannot find a suitable certificate to use for smart card logons, or the KDC certificate could not be verified. Smart card logon may not function correctly if this problem is not resolved. To correct this problem, either verify the existing KDC certificate using certutil.exe or enroll for a new KDC certificate. This is going to be an evil one to debug and I'm kinda hoping someone has encountered it and knows the answer off hand. Thanks all.

• Route specific HTTP requests through pfSense OpenVPN

  Hi, to start, I have very little knowledge on routes, iptables, etc. That said, here's what I'm trying to accomplish and where I think I'm stumped: Problem: We have an external website which we recently firewalled so it only accepts traffic from our office IP addresses. This works well at the office, but doesn't work for remote access through VPN as we don't route all traffic through OpenVPN. I would rather avoid forcing everyone to route all traffic through just to accommodate this one site. Environment: Main router box is running pfSense. Em0 is internal IP, Em1 is external. Internal net is 10.23.x and VPN is 10.0.8.0/24 I believe what I need to do is add a route to the VPN server config to send all traffic to that IP over the VPN tunnel. I think that part's working, but I don't get a response back, so I'm assuming that I need some NAT config on the VPN server to route the response back over the tunnel? What I've found so far is to try the following, but since this is a pfSense box on FreeBSD, I can't run iptables, etc. Make sure ip forwarding is enabled: echo 1 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward Setup NAT back out: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.0.8.0/24 -o em0 -j MASQUERADE Am I on the right path, and if so how do I accomplish this through pfSense UI or FreeBSD CLI? • Skype performance in IPSEC VPN

  I've been challenged to "improve Skype performance" for calls within my organisation. Having read the Skype IT Administrators Guide I am wondering whether we might have a performance issue where the Skype Clients in a call are all on our WAN. The call is initiated by a Skype Client at our head office, and terminated on a Skype Client in a remote office connected via IPSEC VPN. Where this happens, I assume the trafficfrom Client A (encrypted by Skype) goes to our ASA 5510, where it is furtehr encrypted, sent to the remote ASA 5505 decrypted, then passed to Client B which decrypts the Skype encryption. Would the call quality benefit if the traffic didn't go over the VPN, but instead only relied on Skype's encryption? I imagine I could achieve this by setting up a SOCKS5 proxy in our HQ DMZ for Skype traffic. Then the traffic goes from Client A to Proxy, over the Skype relay network, then arrives at Cisco ASA 5505 as any other internet traffic, and then to Client B. Is there likely to be any performance benefit in doing this? If so, is there a way to do it that doesn't require a proxy? Has anyone else tackled this?
