I'm tired of manually converting breaks from rough notes to either paragraphs or line breaks for release as HTML, and tired of converting spaces to breaking or non-breaking ones. There are standard Unicode code points for the difference - what editor lets me use almost plain ASCII text but with builtin support and understanding for Unicode paragraph and non-breaking space characters? And ideally will let me save straight to either plain text UTF8 or to a file of plain HTML paragraphs?

  • Use icacls to make a directory read-only on Windows 7

    I'm attempting to test some filesystem exceptions in a Java based application. I need to find a way to create a directory that is located under %TMP% that is set to read-only. Essentially on UNIX/POSIX platforms, I can do a chmod -w and get this effect. Under Windows 7/NTFS this is of course a different story. I'm running into multiple issues on this. My user has "administrative" right (although this may not always be the case) and as such the directory is created with an ACL including: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM BUILTIN\Administrators <my current user> Is there a way using icacls to essentially get this directory into a state where it is read-only PERIOD, do my test, then restore the ACL for removal? EDIT With the information provided by @Ansgar Wiechers I was able to come up with a solution. I used the following: icacls dirname /deny %username%:(WD) In the page located here I found this in the remarks section: icacls preserves the canonical order of ACE entries as: * Explicit denials * Explicit grants * Inherited denials * Inherited grants By performing the above icalcs command, I was able to set the current user's ability to write or append files (WD) to the directory to deny. Then it was a question of returning it to a state post test: icacls dirname /reset /t /c Done

  • AutoComplete not working in Outlook 2007

    When I go to create a new message in Outlook 2007, and I start typing the first few characters of a contact's name, no suggestions appear. I've just added all my contacts from a .csv file that was exported from Yahoo! Mail. If I type the name out, then click 'send', then it will ask me which of the contact's emails to send it to if the contact has multiple addresses. I've looked in the advanced options to make sure AutoComplete is on, which it its. What is going on? Thanks!

  • Jerky transition after the login screen

After I type my password at the logon screen, the blue background is supposed to fade away smoothly and show the desktop, but on my machine the transition is jerky. I have an ATI graphics card and the Catalyst 10.2 drivers. What can I do to make the transition more smooth? Thanks!

  • Why does my macbook pro have long ping times over wifi?

    I have been having problems connecting with my wifi. It is weird, the ping times to the router (<30 feet away) seem to surge, often getting over 10s before slowly coming back down. You can see the trend below. I'm on a macbook pro and have done the normal stuff (reset the pram and smc, changed wireless channels, etc.). It happens across different routers, so I think it must be my laptop, but I don't know what it could be. The RSSI value hovers around -57, but I've seen the transmit rate flip between 0, 48 & 54. The signal strength is ~60% with 9% noise. Currently, there are 17 other wireless networks in range, but only one in the same channel. 1 - How can I figure out what's going on? 2 - How can I correct the situation? TIA!   • Ubuntu - changing another users file permissions

    I have setup Ubuntu as a development web server - however I am experiencing problems with file permissions. I have 2 users, user1 and user2, and they both have been put into the group www-data. I have uploaded a new file with user1 so the file is owned by user1 and the www-data group. At present if user2 wants to modify the permissions on that file to say 777 - they cannot. Is there a way to allow any users within a group to be able to modifiy permissions etc.. on this file? I have tried changing umask to 002 and a few other combinations that were suggested without luck.

  • cannot connect to Apache web server through hamachi

    we are running an apache web server in the office. Hamachi clients are installed on the server and on the other PC's. We can ping and browse each other but cannot view the web server through Hamachi. have disabled the firewalls on the server as well as on the PC's. I have added an apache program exception in the firewall on the server, but surely this is not needed if I disable the firewall? I would be really grateful if someone could help!

  • Installing drivers for switchable graphics

    I recently bought a laptop that came with Windows 7 64-bit installed. I have some older (16-bit and 32-bit) software that doesn't work with 64-bit Windows, but works just fine with 32-bit. Since I also wanted to get rid of all of the pre-installed spam, I decided to wipe the hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows 7 32-bit. I can't get the graphics cards working. This laptop uses switchable graphics, an Intel card and a Radeon card. I first tried installing this driver from Intel, which works for the Intel card. Of course, the Radeon card doesn't work with this driver and I need it for some of the newer games I have. I also tried this driver. Windows's device manager will recognize the Radeon card, but it will still use the Intel card. Also, even though that package says it contains the Intel driver, the Intel card still isn't properly recognized by Windows (leaving me with a nasty 800x600 resolution). On top of that, the Catalyst Control Center won't open (saying "The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter") I tried installing HP's driver then installing Intel's driver on top of it. Device manager will then recognize both graphics cards properly. However, the laptop still uses the Intel card. The CCC still won't start (saying the same thing as before) and I can't find any of 'switching' graphics cards. Before formatting, I could right-click the desktop and click "Configure Switchable Graphics" This option hasn't been in the context menu regardless of what driver(s) I've installed. After some research, I found out that this menu entry runs the command "cli.exe Start PowerXpressHybrid" I've tried manually running this command, but I get the same unsupported message from CCC. So, does anyone know how I can get this working? I would like to be able to switch between the Intel and Radeon. But, if there's some way to disable the Intel and use only the Radeon, that would be fine I dual-boot with Linux (framebuffer uses the Intel, haven't even tried getting X set up yet) Here's the output of lspci # lspci -v | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc NI Seymour [AMD Radeon HD 6470M] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) The laptop is a HP Pavilion g6t-1d00. After a fresh install of Windows 7, I installed the HP driver (the one linked above). Then, there's an optional Windows update I installed (don't remember the exact name, but it'll stick out).     Basically I have a Ubuntu Server machine and I would like an idiot-proof solution for sending emails from my website that is also running in this same machine. My doubts are: 1) Should I use postfix or there are more simple solutions for an smtp server? 2) Do I need to be able to receive emails as well? I just want to send emails... 3) I did I simple test with postfix that came with my Ubuntu server and the email got sent, but it went to the spam box of my gmail.     I've been using Wacom tablets on Linux for quite some time, almost exclusively in Ubuntu, and in previous versions I've used xidump to track input values. I would use that information to put calibration settings in my xorg.conf file. However, in the most recent Ubuntu release, this command does not exist, and the package wacom-tools that previously installed it has now been removed. Is there a new method for calibrating Wacom pads under Linux? Should I have been using a different method all along for obtaining this information?

  • VMware Fusion configuration files missing

    I need to set up port forwarding to my VM in Fusion 5. Everywhere on the net, the solution is described as editing the file: /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.conf However, on my install, that file doesn't exist. Neither does the vmnet8 directory. Here is the full content of VMware stuff I have in /Library/Application Support/: /Library/Application Support/ VMware/ VMware Fusion AdminWritable Shared vmInventory usbarb.rules VMware Fusion That's right: /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/ exists but is empty. And there is no VMware folder in other Library directories on my system. I am running OS X 10.8.2. I just reinstalled Fusion 5.02, no change. Meanwhile, I have 3 VMs that work just fine. So how am I supposed to set up port forwarding with Fusion 5? Thanks, JD Edit: in a hunch, I tried ps ax | grep natd which returned: 9646 ?? S 0:00.01 /Applications/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Library/vmnet-natd -s 7 -m /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.mac -c /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.conf So it seems that the configurations files are now in the directory /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion. I'll work from here and edit this question as I make progress.

  • Notepad and Textedit exchange

    I use both W7 and Mac OSX on several machines, with sugarsync to sync files and directories. So far no problem. However txt files created by W7 Notepad are displayed differently with Mac TextEdit. And when I edit the file with TextEdit, it looks different again in W7 Notepad. Edits in Notepad again look different on the Mac. Problem areas are: - tabs - carriage returns - fonts. I use and edit one particular txt file on a daily basis: services.txt (here I keep all my web accounts etc). What can I do to keep these exactly the same whilst editing on either Mac or W7? thanks Peter

  • Can't Remote into Windows Server

    Hello, I have a Dell server wired into the router. I was able to connect to it with my laptop (laptop is wireless) before my router died. My verizon router went kaput, and I got everything else back up and running on the wireless network other than the remoting in feature, even though I can access the server through windows explorer just fine. Any ideas why? What do I need to check? UPDATE: Interesting scenario, Network Discovery is off; I turn it on and save, but for some reason, even after that, network discovery is turning itself off... no idea why that is happening? Thanks.

  • What's wrong with my custom patch cables?

    I have a box of bulk Cat5e riser cable left over from when I had my house wired. I figured I could use this to make some custom length cables for connecting my computers, switches, etc. I had a crimper already so I bought a bag of RJ45 plugs. I made a few cables several years ago, but my experience/knowledge with this sort of thing is minimal. None of my cables are working. I don't have a tester so I just plug the cable into a computer and switch but I get no link light. I wired them them all straight-through and visual inspection doesn't show any problems. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

  • How to use sudo with rcp command to copy files from linux host to HP-UX host?

    I'm having this issue where when I try to use sudo to rcp some files from a Linux host to an HP-UX host (note that the destination directory requires root access to write to), I get the following error from HP-UX's side: remshd: Login incorrect. I should note that the passwords for the Linux host and the HP-UX host are different. The command doesn't seem to give me a chance to enter the proper HP-UX password and automatically defaults to this error.

    I'm trying to install Windows 98 SE on an old PC and it's not going well. I run into this problem. Searching for Boot Record from Floppy..OK Starting Windows 98... TOSHIBA Enhanced-IDE CD/DVD-ROM Device Driver (ATAPI) Version 2.24 (C)Copyright Toshiba Corp. 1995-1999. All rights reserved. Device Name : TOSCD001 Number of units : 1 MSCDEX Version 2.25 Copyright (C) MIcrosoft Corp. 1986-1995. All rights reserved. Drive Z: = Driver TOSCD001 unit 0 TOSHIBA MACHINE Invalid drive specification Path not found - C:\TOOLS\CDROMDRV.SYS Invalid drive specification Invalid drive specification After that last line, it leaves me at a bitmap image displaying instructions to reboot with Ctrl+Alt+Del. It doesn't say why I have to reboot, and it doesn't state any error type, it just want's me to reboot for no apparent reason. After reboot, it just boots up from Floppy again and it cycles through the same thing all over again. The computer has been restored to original specification. Original system recovery "CD-ROM" discs are available and they are not scratched or anything, they are in very good condition. It's a set of 3 CDs, and the first disc labeled "1/3" should be the one holding the OEM version of Windows 98 SE. There is also a boot disk for Windows 98. I'm not sure what the other two discs are for. This computer came with three language support, so those could be holding different language versions or additional OEM discs. But I'm quite sure that the first disc holds the main operating system. BIOS has been set to optimized defaults. Boot priority is as follows; Floppy, IDE-0, CD-ROM. Under Standard CMOS settings, BIOS scans and autoconfigures both the hard drive and the CD/DVD drive. On POST it finds them both, and it finds the DOS bootdisk and starts preparing for installation, as you can see above. So what's this "invalid drive specification" about? Why isn't the installation starting? Updates Update 1 Booting from CD disc 2 In desperation I tried booting from the second CD. Boot order was; Floppy, CD-ROM, IDE-0. It boots normally from floppy disk, just like above, but then returns following. File not found - Z:\3LNGINST\TOOLS\PARTINFO.TXT I accidentally pressed some key on the keyboard, and before I knew it, the following screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Verifying drive integrity, 16% complete. After completion another screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Do you wish to use the maximum available size for a Primary DOS Partition and make the partition active (Y/N)?....................? [Y] Verifying drive integrity, 7% complete. I didn't choose Yes, it was set automatically. After completion the computer was automatically rebooted. Then I got a new screen. This is in Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish. Here's the message in Swedish. Hårddisken är inte klar för återställning av programvara. Installationsprogrammet måste skapa nya partitioner (C:, D:, ...). VARNING! ALLT INNEHÅLL PÅ HÅRDDISKEN KOMMER ATT RADERAS! Tryck på en tangent om du vill fortsätta (eller CTRL-C för att avbryta). Let me translate that. Hard drive is not ready for restoring the software. Setup program has to create new partitions (C:, D:, ...). WARNING! ALL CONTENTS ON THE HARD DRIVE WILL BE ERASED! Press any key to continue (or CTRL-C to cancel). I pressed Enter and it started formatting the hard drive. WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE c: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)?y Formatting 14,67.53M 1 percent completed. It automatically sets the "y" option and starts formatting. Rebooting with CD disc 1 After completing this operation it rebooted automatically. I inserted CD disc 1 and there was no issue with "invalid drive specification" anymore. Instead, a bitmap menu was displayed where it asked me to choose a language. And I thought I had it there for a while but it didn't work out. After choosing the language, another menu was displayed asking me to choose a type of recovery (restore pre-installed software OR restore hard drive partitions and pre-installed software). I opted for the second option. Then a data destruction warning showed up where I just pressed 1 to Continue. It did something and then just rebooted and the same formatting screen shows up as before. So something is not right. Am I doing it wrong? I seem to have come past the CD-ROM driver issue at least. But now I'm stuck with this problem... it seems to have something to do with the hard drive. Like... why is is it always trying to format it? Isn't it enough to format it once? By the way, it needs to be formatted as FAT32, right? Windows 98 doesn't support NTFS? I think FDISK should have taken care of this already. I know this is an old hard drive, but I connected to my main computer and it was able to read and write to it without a problem. It does have bad sectors though, but it's expected on an old hard drive like this. Any ideas?.. Update 2 I seem to be repeatedly getting stuck at the format screen where it asks to press any key to continue. So tried to cancel it this time with Ctrl+C. This leaves me at: A:\TOOLS> I can do DIR and CD and I tried to change to Z: drive. I tried running "setup" but there is no such thing. In fact, here is the result of it. Searching for Boot Record from CDROM..Not Found Searching for Boot Record from IDE-0.. OK Missing operating system Any other ideas?... Solution #2 Rik proposed to run Z:\setup. Now that I have found a way to drop to DOS prompt with Ctrl+C as described above (Update 2), I did try running setup but there is no such command or file in there. So that didn't work.
