  • Redirecting traffic to a https site

    In our mail server there are multiple virtual email domain hosted. User can use webmail.example.com (this is the first apache virtualhost) to check mail or they can use mail.THEIR-DOMAIN.com. If the put mail.THEIR-DOMAIN.com apache shows the webmail.example.com as it is the first virtualhost and mail.THEIR-DOMAIN.com doesn't exist. Recently we imposed https for webmail.example.com and added this mod_rewrite rule: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} But now users not getting the default webmail page as they were getting before. How can we redirect all request coming to the URL "mail.ANY-DOMAIN.com" to "https://webmail.example.com"? I've tried the following but it didn't work: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off RewriteRule (mail.*) https://webmail.example.com Thanks for your help in advance.

  • Application deployment with Puppet

    I'm new to Puppet and while I've been using *nix systems for many years, I've never worked as a sysadmin or in ops. I'm currently writing Puppet manifests for hosting a set of (PHP/MySQL/MongoDB, code in git) web applications. Clearly Puppet needs to have some knowledge of the actual applications because I'll set up a virtual host for each one, but I'm not sure whether Puppet should be managing things like code deployment and database creation. Is Puppet an appropriate tool for application deployment? If not, can you recommend a more appropriate tool?

  • Excel 2010 -Excel cannot complete this task with available resources

    Getting this error when trying to sort a document (Excel cannot complete this task with available resources). Document isn't particularly large, about 4,000 lines. Can't seem to figure out why this would start on this. I can sort this same file fine on everything back to Excel 2000 on older crappy computers. Computer is running Win 7 x64, 16 Gb RAM, and another 16 Gb of virtual. There's no possible way that all of the memory is actually getting exhausted when I can perform this on an older XP machine with 512 Mb of RAM, unless 2010's memory usage is inconceivably poorly designed. I found a few posts on forums stating that there might be a security update related bug. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Straight-forward to Virtualise with XEN or KVM on IBM Server System x3650 M4 791562G?

    I want to built a virtualised Server Environment using XEN or KVM. The virtual machines should be purely debian systems - so XEN or KVM should be a sane choice. Now while buying servers, I am confronted with the fact, that the vendors obviously only support commercial solution. I think, on a good server, one should be able to install uncommercial software as well - but of course sometimes systems have hardware, that requires drivers, that are not found in the OS Community. So I am asked the question: Is it straight-forward to use Debian with IBM Server System x3650 M4 791562G with Debian - or even virtualising the IBM Server System x3650 M4 791562G using XEN or KVM. I am sure there will always be a way to achieve this goal - but this way might have a high milage - so I am not asking, whether this is theoretical possible, but whether this should be straight-forward and practically easy to do, no major headaches to be expected.

    Hi I don't know if here is the right place to ask this question or not but its vital for me to solve it. I run open suse 10.2 on a vmware and my operating system is vista. yesterday I run my vmware and another program but both couldn't run and I end both tasks to solve it but now I can open vmware without any problem and run another os but not my open suse. the error is: Cannot open the disk 'C:\Users\hamide\Documents\Virtual Machines\SUSE Linux 2\SUSE Linux 2-000003.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. Reason: Failed to lock the file. please help me I don't have any recent back up and It takes too long to do all my project again.:( Bests

  • What is the best way to compare vhost traffic?

    Recently one of my servers has been subjected to malicious ddos attacks. I have about 12 websites hosted on the server which uses name based v-hosting. I am trying to identify which virtual host(s) are getting bombarded with traffic. I have used tools such as iftop which is good for identifying hosts which are consuming lots of bandwidth, and also apachetop which is useful for identifying which resources are being requested on a single v-host. What I really need is a tool which allows me to see the amount of traffic being received by each v-host in real time so I can easily see which v-host is being targeted. Does such a tool exist?

  • OpenBSD: Gateway outside subnet (works in Linux)

    We need to set up an OpenBSD host to use a default gateway that's outside of it's subnet. This is all I need to do on Linux (not the actual IPs) to achieve it: ifconfig eth0 33.33.33.33/31 up route add 33.33.33.254 dev eth0 route add default gw 33.33.33.254 The problem is that we don't know the proper equivalent of the middle command in OpenBSD. The man page says: If the destination is directly reachable via an interface requiring no intermediary system to act as a gateway, the -iface modifier should be specified; Sadly we can't seem to figure out how to make it work with that.     I got a Linux VM Image from a dev in our company to develop on it. This works nice, but now i need to do some Internet Explorer testing, for that i have an other VM with windows on it. I have an entry in my hosts file under macos that redirect some virtual domain to the IP of the linux VM. I tried to modify the hosts file in windows also. But i cant reach Linux VM. How can i access the Server on the linux VM with Windows VM? Are there some settings i missed?

  • Windows Server 2008 freezes when I run programs as administrator

    I am working on a machine running Windows Server 2008. Every program I have tried to run (firefox, notepad, wordpad) works fine, but if I right-click on any item on the desktop or the start menu and select "Run as Administrator" it freezes. I can move the mouse around and open/close the start menu, but the items in the start menu do not change color when the mouse hovers over them. I googled for answers for some time but had no luck. Does anyone have any ideas that I could try? (Update: I forgot to mention that the machine is virtual and I am using VMWare Workstation. In order to answer the questions below, I have been going to the same snapshot of the system each time. This lets me start the system in the exact same place each time in order to answer your questions and test.) (Update: When I run any process as administrator and it freezes, I can start task manager, but I cannot see the new process (notepad, etc...) )

  • freebsd dev server on virtualbox over windows

    I need a unixy environment for development purposes. I hate doing things on windows but it is more stable for daily use and I don't have a mac, so I'm having to use windows (7). I want to run freebsd in a virtual machine, configure it to be the localhost server, be able to connect using ssh (within my home-network) and be able to install vbox guest addons. If guest additions aren't the best, I can use solaris or linux flavours. I need no gui. I don't know anything about network stuff, so I need a detailed explanation from vise people here, or a nice doc to read. Edit : To be more specific as requested, I use following on unices: *django 1.4 *apache *python (2.7) *emacs *mysql *probably node.js *bash scripting I use windows to be able to do daily things easily, like connecting to my tablet, browsing and learning java. And I don't want to use linux as my desktop os, beacuse it gets broken a lot, it's annoying to maintain wlan problems and some more.

  • Why would Linux VM in vSphere ESXi 5.5 show dramatically increased disk i/o latency?

    I'm stumped and I hope someone else will recognize the symptoms of this problem. Hardware: new Dell T110 II, dual-core Pentium G860 2.9 GHz, onboard SATA controller, one new 500 GB 7200 RPM cabled hard drive inside the box, other drives inside but not mounted yet. No RAID. Software: fresh CentOS 6.5 virtual machine under VMware ESXi 5.5.0 (build 174 + vSphere Client). 2.5 GB RAM allocated. The disk is how CentOS offered to set it up, namely as a volume inside an LVM Volume Group, except that I skipped having a separate /home and simply have / and /boot. CentOS is patched up, ESXi patched up, latest VMware tools installed in the VM. No users on the system, no services running, no files on the disk but the OS installation. I'm interacting with the VM via the VM virtual console in vSphere Client. Before going further, I wanted to check that I configured things more or less reasonably. I ran the following command as root in a shell on the VM: for i in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10; do dd if=/dev/zero of=/test.img bs=8k count=256k conv=fdatasync done I.e., just repeat the dd command 10 times, which results in printing the transfer rate each time. The results are disturbing. It starts off well: 262144+0 records in 262144+0 records out 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 20.451 s, 105 MB/s 262144+0 records in 262144+0 records out 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 20.4202 s, 105 MB/s ... but after 7-8 of these, it then prints 262144+0 records in 262144+0 records out 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GG) copied, 82.9779 s, 25.9 MB/s 262144+0 records in 262144+0 records out 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 84.0396 s, 25.6 MB/s 262144+0 records in 262144+0 records out 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 103.42 s, 20.8 MB/s If I wait a significant amount of time, say 30-45 minutes, and run it again, it again goes back to 105 MB/s, and after several rounds (sometimes a few, sometimes 10+), it drops to ~20-25 MB/s again. Plotting the disk latency in vSphere's interface, it shows periods of high disk latency hitting 1.2-1.5 seconds during the times that dd reports the low throughput. (And yes, things get pretty unresponsive while that's happening.) What could be causing this? I'm comfortable that it is not due to the disk failing, because I also had configured two other disks as an additional volume in the same system. At first I thought I did something wrong with that volume, but after commenting the volume out from /etc/fstab and rebooting, and trying the tests on / as shown above, it became clear that the problem is elsewhere. It is probably an ESXi configuration problem, but I'm not very experienced with ESXi. It's probably something stupid, but after trying to figure this out for many hours over multiple days, I can't find the problem, so I hope someone can point me in the right direction. (P.S.: yes, I know this hardware combo won't win any speed awards as a server, and I have reasons for using this low-end hardware and running a single VM, but I think that's besides the point for this question [unless it's actually a hardware problem].) ADDENDUM #1: Reading other answers such as this one made me try adding oflag=direct to dd. However, it makes no difference in the pattern of results: initially the numbers are higher for many rounds, then they drop to 20-25 MB/s. (The initial absolute numbers are in the 50 MB/s range.) ADDENDUM #2: Adding sync ; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches into the loop does not make a difference at all. ADDENDUM #3: To take out further variables, I now run dd such that the file it creates is larger than the amount of RAM on the system. The new command is dd if=/dev/zero of=/test.img bs=16k count=256k conv=fdatasync oflag=direct. Initial throughput numbers with this version of the command are ~50 MB/s. They drop to 20-25 MB/s when things go south. ADDENDUM #4: Here is the output of iostat -d -m -x 1 running in another terminal window while performance is "good" and then again when it's "bad". (While this is going on, I'm running dd if=/dev/zero of=/test.img bs=16k count=256k conv=fdatasync oflag=direct.)   • Doing "text mode 'splash' game" during boot.

    Sometimes I want to do something (for example, playing a simple text-mode game) while the system is booting up. This is especially useful when lengthy reiserfs transaction replays are happening. Current hacky way of doing it is: Put the program on initramfs. Before running /sbin/init, "openvt 2 /my/program". Turn off messages from kernel (sysrq 0) Override /dev/console with /dev/null (to prevent boot messages). The problems are: There are STILL some messages interfering with program output. I can't see boot messages by switching to that virtual terminal back. After finishing the boot sequence, /dev/tty2 ends up being attached both to getty and my program. How to do it properly without of running graphical splashes? The system is Linux Debian Squeeze, no dependency based sysv scripts.

  • Fedora 16 Running Hot

    Since switching from Windows 7 to Fedora 16, my laptop has been running incredibly hot (by the air exhaust). The laptop is an Asus K73S. Running 'sensors', I receive: acpitz-virtual-0: 75.0 celsius nouveau-pci-0100: 66.0 celsius asus-isa-0000: 75.0 celsius The only CPU hog is Firefox at 30 - 40% on average. My GPU information (from lspci) is: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200/2nd Generation Core Process or Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09). Running lspci | grep -i VGA, returns: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GF106 [GeForce GT 555M SDDR3] (rev a1) I don't notice a huge difference running without the battery, but it does seem a little cooler.   • How to make all of my IPs works in HyperVM XEN?

    I've installed HyperVM on CentOS 5.8 final to make XEN VPS. I have 5 IPs, and added them to an IPPool. They are from *.123 to *.126. But when I add Virtual machines, just the first one (which indicate to *.123 ip) works well. I mean I can ssh to it by "works well" and when I want ssh to the other ones ( *.124 *.125 ...) it says : ssh: connect to host *.124 port 22: Connection timed out after a while. I alos set gateway and netmask as it shows in my server IPAdresses for device eth0 (it doesn't make any difference if I set these or not, I get same error). What should I do now? Thanks.

    I have been using KeePass as a desktop password manager on Windows for many years. Love it! However, I am now needing to work on different platforms much of my day (Windows 7, Windows XP, Mac OS X, Ubuntu, and OpenSUSE.) I'm looking for a password manager I can share across all these platforms. My ideal solution would: Run natively (not in a virtual machine) on all platforms. Store the "official" copy of the password data on a local network so I can get to it from any and all machines. It is OK if it locks (or becomes read-only) when one client is accessing it. Keep a local cached copy (read-only is fine) so I can still get to my passwords when disconnected from the network. Does any such beast exist?

Due to contractual reasons our setup has to be hosted on our own physical/virtual servers instead of a cloud solution at this stage. Could someone outline or link to some best practices that would provide both high availability (priority at the moment) and eventually load balancing for our site.   • Sharing files between centOS on virtualbox and windows 7 as the host

    I have centOS 5.5 installed on virtual box it has no GUI so every thing is command based. I want to make a folder in centOS which i can share with my windows 7 host OS such that i can send files to and fro seamlessly. I am new to linux and i managed to install samba. I looked up some tips on net but i ended up getting confused and none of them worked. Can someone explain to me how i can do this in a straight forward way from how i can configure samba to how i can mount the folder such that it can be seen on the host operating system. I am completely lost.please help.

    I'm working in office which uses Windows server for printing. Because our printer supports only Windows driver. But here are Mac OS X also which requires network printing... I'm sure there is no driver of the printer for Mac. So I figured out an idea to do this. On the Mac, a virtual printer driver generates and sends PDF file to print server. Print server, prints PDF files with it's local printer. Is there a solution can do this? (free or commercial)

  • pfSense router gives DNS rebinding warning when accessing subdomains

    I have just set up a router running pfSense on our network and forwarded the appropriate ports. I have a small web server running in my network, and a domain name pointing to our (WAN) IP. When accessing that domain name, everything works fine. However, when accessing a subdomain of the domain name, pfSense will give a DNS rebinding warning. This did not happen back when I used a DD-WRT router. What is the proper way to fix this? The DNS records for the subdomain also point to the same address (I use a virtual server to differentiate the subdomains.)

  • Firewall is blocking internet traffic to OpenVPN clients

    I have a virtual network setup with a Linux router/firewall connected to two private networks. An OpenVPN server in routing mode and a web server are in one of the networks. On the other are linux client machines which access the webserver and the Internet through the OpenVPN server. Also, external clients can access the OpenVPN from the Internet. The OpenVPN's server.conf is setup to use routing mode in udp, push DNS and routes to the network it is in so clients can access the webserver. Here are my very strict firewall rules. After connecting to the OpenVPN server, my clients can not access the Internet or the web server. When I allow FORWARD traffic to go through, it works just fine. The OpenVPN server has full internet connectivity. What firewall rule do I need to add to allow internet traffic to reach my clients?

  • Software RAID underneath ESXi datastore

    I'm building an virtual environment for a small business. It is based around a single ESXi 5.1 host, which will host half a dozen or so VMs. I'm having some doubts regarding how to implement the storage though. I naturally want the datastore to be fault tolerant, but I can't get the funds for a separate storage machine, nor expensive hardware RAID solutions, so I would like to use some software RAID (lvm/mdadm, most likely). How can this be implemented? My only idea so far would be to create a VM which has the storage adapter as passthrough, puts some software RAID on top of the disks and then presents the resulting volumes "back" to the ESXi host which then creates a datastore from which other VMs get their storage presented. This does seem kind of round-about, do I have any better options? From my research, passthrough seems to come with quite a few drawbacks, such as no suspend/resume etc.

  • RDP - Sharing shortcuts and/or toolbars

    I often have to work across several virtual machines through RDP. I used to work with Terminals, and recently changed to mRemote NG. As of now, I have a checklist that I run on each new VM I create, in order to populate the desktop with the shortcuts and apps that I use regularly. Then, I create a checkpoint and use that when I need to revert to a "clean" machine. However, it's not always practical, and the VMs I have to use are not always created by me so that checkpoint is not always available. I know that I could use a template when creating the VM, but it doesn't solve the problem when I have to use VMs that I do not own. Does anyone know of a way to setup one set of shortcuts/apps and be able to launch them on a remote desktop connection easily? Kind of like a toolbar that is present wherever I'm logged on...

    I am using SimpleID as my OpenID provider and it turns out that if I log on via pages like those on StackExchange, one of the parameters of the GET request gets dropped by Suhosin. The name of the variable is s and I presume it's responsible for the "return to URL" part after login. All of this is not a problem as long as I am already logged into SimpleID from before. However, as soon as the site on which I want to log in via OpenID ends up at the login screen of SimpleID, the redirect back to the site I came from does not work anymore due to the dropped variable. Is there a method to configure either on a per-virtual-host or per-URL basis to ignore the maximum length for GET requests with a parameter s exceeding the (globally) set limit? I'm using Apache 2.2, so I was wondering whether a mechanism similar to setting the PHP ini variables from within the server configuration exists for Suhosin.

  • VMWare Player disrupting Samba on Ubuntu 9.04 host?

    I've had Ubuntu 9.04 running on this computer for a while now. I just installed VMWare Player on my system and now when I try to browse the network in the Ubuntu host all the computers will show up one time only. If I try to browse again, no computers appear and even the workgroup is missing. I have to run: sudo /etc/init.d/vmware stop sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart to get the network visable again. As long as VMWare Player is stopped Samba seems fine. I guess it's got to do with the virtual adaptors that VMWare installs. Is there a way to get them both to work, or did I just miss-configure something?
