• How to use rvm (ruby version manager) with root account?

  The whole point of rvm is to be able to install multiple rubies and access them from a user account. What do you do when you need to access any of those rubies from root? Or use gems installed in one of those rvms? Is there an elegant (or even hackish) way to use these I haven't considered? My guess is that I should just add it to my PATH, but I'm curious if anyone has come up with a better idea. I'd rather not install rvm just for the root account and duplicate everything.

• Compiler: Translation to assembly

  I've written an interpreter for my experimental language and know I want to move on and write a small compiler for it. It will probably take the source, go through the same steps as the interpreter (tokenizer, parser) and then translate the source to assembly. Now my questions: Can I expect that every command in my language can be 1:1 translated to a bunch of assembly instructions? What I mean is if I will have to completely throw over the whole input program or if it is just translated to assembly per line. Which assembler should I use as output format?

• Zend_Form: Is this really the way we should be doing things?

  OK. I understand how to use Zend_Form and it's implementation of the decorator pattern. My question is, is this the best way to be going about creating forms? Shouldn't a documents forms be left to to the front-end rather than generating forms programmatically? Doesn't this kinda violate the whole idea of keeping things separate? I mean, really, even providing that you have a good understanding of the methodology being employed, does it really save one that much time? I guess what I'm looking for is some guidance as to what might be considered 'best practice'. I'm not saying that Zend_Form doesn't have it's place, I'm just wondering if it should be used in all cases (or not). And this has nothing to do with validation. I'm just thinking that something more akin to using the 'ViewScript' approach might be more appropriate in most cases. Your thoughts?

  I have a network server application written in C, the listener is bound using INADDR_ANY so it can accept connections via any of the IP addresses of the host on which it is installed. I need to determine which of the server's IP addresses the client used when establishing its connection - actually I just need to know whether they connected via the loopback address 127.0.0.1 or not. • tiled images in swing

  I have task to prepare two windows with swing. One contains grid of squares, with random numbers in them. In second I need to load pieces of tiled image and then show them in the correct order, forming tiled image. I've used swing only few times to draw some 2d polylines, so basically I just theoretically now what to do. Ok, so window number 1: I start with creating Jframe for the window. Then I do for loop and in it create 16 JLabels with random numbers in them ? How to set margins between each tile and the whole window ? Window number 2 : So I start the same, but instead of loading numbers I add images ? Now, how can I load image from file and then set it as background ?

• How do you get the File:// protocol to work in IE8?

  I am running a website on my local machine ("http://localhost/asdf") and trying to get some file:// protocol links to work. In reality I'm trying to open a folder, not a specific file, but I can't get either to work. I've put localhost in my "trusted zone", I've tried every combo of "file" ,":", some number of "/" and then a whole bunch of different paths, but encoded and not encoded. Nothing I do causes anything to open when I click on the link. If I copy the link destination, and paste that in the browser address window, then it works as expected. Anyone know the secret?

  What's the best way of reading only the specific lines (based on matching text) from a file? • Tabbar App with Paging between tabs.

  Hi everyone, I've been struggling for about four days now trying to figure out how to implement the functionality I need. Basically I want to make a tabbar app that you can swipe back and forth between the tabs. Say I have 4 tabs. Would it make any sense just to create a scrollview that's 4 times as wide as the device, and load up 4 individual views side by side? Then I could use the tabbar delegate to simple tell which page to make visible? I could also use itemSelected to update the tab itself if a user swipes to a new page. does this make sense / is it a good idea? I just need a quick yes or no answer before I spend another whole day pursuing something doomed to failure. Thank you very much for your help...

• DataSet XML export is empty

  I've got in-memory dataset with couple of tables that is populated in code. Data-bound grids on the gui show table contents without a problem. Then I try to export the dataset into XML: ds.WriteXml(fdSave.FileName, XmlWriteMode.WriteSchema); and get empty XML (with couple of lines regarding dataset names but without any tables) If I export table directly I've got all the data but dataset name is obviously wrong: ds.Fields.WriteXml(fdSave.FileName, XmlWriteMode.WriteSchema); What am I missing? Is there any reasonable way to write the whole dataset into file?

• Including full LaTeX documents within others.

  I'm currently finishing off my dissertation, and would like to be able to include some documents within my LaTeX document. The files I'd like to include are weekly reports done in LaTeX to my supervisor. Obviously all documents are page numbered seperately. I would like them to be included in the final document. I could concatenate all the final PDFs using GhostScript or some other tool, but I would like to have consistent numbering throughout the document. I have tried including the LaTeX from each document in the main document, but the preamble etc causes problems and the small title I have in each report takes a whole page... In summary, I'm looking for a way of including a number of 1 or 2 page self-complete LaTeX files in a large report, keeping their original layouts, but changing the page numbering.

• How to make a section header with an non-rectangular shape without ugly underflow?

  I made an custom UITableView. Then I made a custom header for sections. It has round corners. But unfortunately, the rows of the section are visible in those round corners when the header floats over them. I could just make a background color so the corners are not transparent. But that is not a solution since my whole table has a background image and the section header can move. Is there any way to get the clipping region for the rows a little bit more downwards? I mean: They should not appear under that section header.

  I'm going through the problem of setting up a new computer and I'm having a problem with VS 2005. Whenever I start debugging all the windows (properties, watch, errorlist, stack, ...) pop up all over the place undocked. At this point I've tried docking them and closing them. When I stop debugging more windows pop up all undocked. This keeps happening over and over and over... I've tried closing and docking them but they keep popping out. Wasn't sure how to google this and my patience has grown thin with this whole process of moving to a new comp. Sincerely, Frustrated

Problem is that getline takes character 1Ah as end of file and if it is present on the line, whole reading ends prematurely. Is there any solution for this?   I'm reading some docs about MDM. According to "Moile device management protocol" document, server can set config for managed devices by installing profile files onto devices. Things that can config in that file are described in https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/featuredarticles/iphoneconfigurationprofileref/Introduction/Introduction.html. My Questions are: if server install 2 profiles that have different config for the same thing, what will happen? "Moile device management protocol" documents also mention about "Managed App Configuration and Feedback". So what is different between the previous config file with this function of server. Is "Managed App Configuration and Feedback" just for specific app, not for the whole device as profile files. which fields can be config via "Managed App Configuration and Feedback" of MDM?   I'm trying to create a simple agena portlet. Now I've developed a basic one using spring-portlet-mvc, it allows you to navigate to the next and previous month with thusly named links that invoke a previousMonth or nextMonth function in my controller. Now the problem I'm having is that this navigation causes my whole page to refresh. Now I was wondering what the best way to fix this was. I've been looking around a bit and it looks like jquery/ajax will do the trick, but since I don't have any experience yet with that technology I was wondering if anyone had any pointers/better ideas to solve my problem.

• Struggling to "clear" a CGLayer -- can it even be done?

  So I'm doing this repetitively - making a CGLayer, doing some processing, and then releasing it. This happens a lot in real time -- so surely there is a lot of overhead in making a whole new CGLayer each time? Surely it would be better to just keep lair around, and start fresh each time? However, I do not know any way, at all, to "erase" or "start from blank" a CGLayer?? Can anyone help on this? There is a function CGContextBeginPath(cc) but it's confusing: it seems to only clear out "that" path, it does not erase all of the CGLayer back to a blank canvas. how to return a CGLayer to a blank canvas????? Does anyone know? • Dynamically creating/inserting into an associative array in PHP

  I'm trying to build an associative array in PHP dynamically, and not quite getting my strategy right. Basically, I want to insert a value at a certain depth in the array structure, for instance: $array['first']['second']['third'] = $val; Now, the thing is, I'm not sure if that depth is available, and if it isn't, I want to create the keys (and arrays) for each level, and finally insert the value at the correct level. Since I'm doing this quite a lot in my code, I grew tired of doing a whole bunch of "array_key_exists", so I wanted to do a function that builds the array for me, given a list of the level keys. Any help on a good strategy for this is appreciated. I'm sure there is a pretty simple way, I'm just not getting it...

• Why is this loop over mysql resultset slow? (1.4ms per cycle)

  The $res contains around 488k rows the whole loop takes 61s! that's over 1.25ms per cycle! • indexing for faster search of lists in a file??

  i have a file having around 1 lakh lists and have a another file with again a list of around an average of 50.. I want to compare 2nd item of list in second file with the 2nd element of 1st file and repeat this for each of the 50 lists in 2nd file and get the result of all the matching element. I have written the code for all this,but this is taking a lot of time as it need to check the whole the 1lakh list some 50 times..i want to improve the speed... please tell me how can i do this.... i cant not post my code as it is part of big code and will be difficult to infer anything from that... please tell what can be done to improve the speed?? thank u,

• Lucene.Net - How to treat a space-seperated phrase as a single token?

  I've implemented a search facility using Lucene.Net. The index includes UK academic qualifications, including "A Level". I'd like the users to be able to search using the phrase "A Level", but using the Standrad Analyser the "A" is stripped out as a stop-word and therefore only "Level" is indexed/searched. What's my best option to work around this? I'm guessing I need to somehow tokenise "A Level" to "A-Level" or similar by creating a custom analyser. Is this the best approach? Note that I want don't want the whole search to be a phrase query. i.e. in my search box I want the user to be able to enter <"A Level" AND English Maths Physics and this would return any with "A Level" and either of English MAths or Physics.   I am trying to port a python program to c#. Here is the line that's supposed to be a walkthrough but is currently tormenting me: hash = hashlib.md5(inputstring).digest() After generating a similar MD5 hash in c# It is absolutely vital that I create a similar hash string as the original python program or my whole application will fail. My confusion lies in which encoding to use when converting to string in c# i.e ?Encoding enc = new ?Encoding(); string Hash =enc.GetString(HashBytes); //HashBytes is my generated hash Because I am unable to create two similar hashes when using Encoding.Default i.e string Hash = Encoding.Default.GetString(HashBytes); So I'm thinking knowing the deafult hash.digest() encoding for python would help
