  Do you need an easy way to view word definitions while browsing with Internet Explorer? The Define with Bing Accelerator will display definitions in the same (or a new) tab and save you time while browsing. Using Define with Bing The installation consists of two steps. First, click on Add to Internet Explorer to start the process. Next you will be asked to confirm the installation. Once you have clicked Add your new accelerator is ready to use (no browser restart required). Whenever you encounter a word that needs defining highlight it, click on the small blue square, go to All Accelerators, and then Define with Bing. There are two ways to access the definition: Hover your mouse over the Define with Bing text to open a small popup window Click on Define with Bing to open a definition search in a new tab Being able to access a definition or explanation in the same tab will definitely save you time while browsing. In the example shown here you can get an idea of what SCORM means but clicking on the links inside the popup window is not recommended (webpage opens in popup and is not resizable). In the situation shown above it is better to click on Define with Bing and see more information in a new tab. Conclusion The Define with Bing Accelerator can be a very useful time saver while browsing with Internet Explorer. Finding those word definitions will be a much more pleasant experience now. • Announcing Berkeley DB Java Edition Major Release

  Berkeley DB Java Edition 5.0 was just released. There are a number of new features, enhancements, and options in there that our users have been asking for. Chief among them is a new class called DiskOrderedCursor, which greatly increases performance of systems using spinning platter magnetic hard drives. A number of users expressed interest in this feature, including Alex Feinberg of LinkedIn. Berkeley DB Java Edition is part of Project Voldemort, a distributed key/value database used by LinkedIn. There have been many other improvements and optimizations. Concurrency is significantly improved, as is the performance of update and delete operations. New and interesting methods include Environment.preload, which allows multiple databases to be preloaded simultaneously. New Cursor methods enable for more effective searching through the database. We continue to enhance Berkeley DB Java Edition’s High Availability as well. One new feature is the ability to open a replicated node read-only when the master is unavailable. • What's the term for re-implementing an old API in terms of a newer API

  The reason for doing it is to solve the case when a newer API is no longer backwards compatible with an older API. To explain, just say that there is an old API v1.0. The maker of this API decides it is broken and works on a new API v1.1 that intentionally breaks compatibility with the old API v1.0. Now, any programs written against the old API cannot be recompiled as-is with the new API. Then lets say there is a large app written against the old API and the developer doesn't have access to the source code. A solution would be to re-implement a "custom" old API v1.0 in terms of the new API v1.1 calls. So the "custom" v1.0 API is actually keeping the same interface/methods as the v1.0 API but inside its implementation it is actually making calls to the new API v1.1 methods. So the large app can be then compiled and linked against the "custom" v1.0 API and the new v1.1 API without any major source code changes. Is there a term for this practice? There's a recent example of this happening in Jamie Zawinski's port of XScreenSaver to the iPhone - he re-implemented the OpenGL 1.3 API in terms of the OpenGL ES 1.1 API. In this case, OpenGL 1.3 represents the "old" API and OpenGL ES 1.1 represents the "new" API.

• C# wpf helix scale based mesh parenting using Transform3DGroup

  I am using https://helixtoolkit.codeplex.com/ as a 3D framework. I want to move black mesh relative to the green mesh as shown in the attached image below. I want to make green mesh parent to the black mesh as the change in scale of the green mesh also will result in motion of the black mesh. It could be partial parenting or may be more. I need 3D rotation and 3D transition + transition along green mesh's length axis for the black mesh relative to the green mesh itself. Suppose a variable green_mesh_scale causing scale for the green mesh along its length axis. The black mesh will use that variable in order to move along green mesh's length axis. How to go about it. I've done as follows: GeometryModel3D GreenMesh, BlackMesh; ... double green_mesh_scale = e.NewValue; Transform3DGroup forGreen = new Transform3DGroup(); Transform3DGroup forBlack = new Transform3DGroup(); forGreen.Children.Add(new ScaleTransform3D(new Vector3D(1, green_mesh_scale , 1))); // ... transforms for rotation n transition GreenMesh.Transform = forGreen ; forBlack = forGreen; forBlack.Children.Add(new TranslateTransform3D(new Vector3D(0, green_mesh_scale, 0))); BlackMesh.Transform = forBlack; The problem with this is the scale transform will also be applied to the black mesh.   Few days ago I faced a problem with printing in new Silverlight 4 RC. When you try to dynamically load image (in code behind) and print it, it doesn't work. Paper sheet is blank. Problem XAML file: <Image x:Name="image" Stretch="None" /> XAML.cs: image.Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri(imageUri, UriKind.RelativeOrAbsolute));  Print: var pd = new PrintDocument();   pd.PrintPage += (s, args) =>     {       args.PageVisual = image;     };   pd.Print(); Result: Blank paper.   Solution What you need to do, is forced Silverlight engine to load that image before printing start. To accomplish that I proposed simply checking PixelWith value. Your code will ask about PixelWidth of image so it will have to be loaded. • Problem with WCF-SQL Adapter

  When using WCF receive adapter with SQL binding in Polling mode please be aware of the following problem. Problem: At some regular but seemingly random intervals the application stops processing new requests, places a lock on the database and prevent other application from accessing it. Initially it looked like DTC issue, as it was distributed transaction that stalled most of the time. Symptoms: Orchestration instances in Dehydrated state, receive location not picking up new messages, exclusive locks on database tables, errors in DTC trace. Cause: Microsoft has confirmed that there is a bug in the WCF-SQL adapter. In the receive adapter binding configuration there's receiveTimeout property set to 10 minutes by default. If during this period data is not found in the table the adapter would start new thread and allocate more memory without releasing old resources. Thus if there's no new data in the table for a long time a new thread will be created in the host instance every 10 minutes until it reaches threshold (1000) and then there's no threads left for this host instance and it can't start/complete any tasks. Then this host instance won't be able to do anything. If other artifacts are hosted in the instance they will suffer consequences as well. Solution: - Set receiveTimeout to the maximum time 24.20:31:23.6470000. - Place WCF-SQL receive locations in separate host to provide its own thread pool and eliminate impact on other processes - Ensure WCF-SQL dedicated host instances are restarted at interval less or equal to receiveTimeout to flush threads and memory - Monitor performance counters Process/Thread Count/BTSNTSvc{n} for thread count trend and respond to alert if it grows by restarting host instance If you use WCF-SQL Adapter in the Notification mode then make sure to remove sqlAdapterInboundTransactionBehavior otherwise this location will exhibit the same issue. In this case though, setting receiveTimeout doesn't help and new thread will be created at default intervals (10 min) ignoring maximum setting.

Key-value access to InnoDB via Memcached APIMany of the next generation of web, cloud, social and mobile applications require fast operations against simple Key/Value pairs. At the same time, they must retain the ability to run complex queries against the same data, as well as ensure the data is protected with ACID guarantees. With the new NoSQL API for InnoDB, developers have allthe benefits of a transactional RDBMS, coupled with the performance capabilities of Key/Value store.MySQL 5.6 provides simple, key-value interaction with InnoDB data via the familiar Memcached API.  Implemented via a new Memcached daemon plug-in to mysqld, the new Memcached protocol is mapped directly to the native InnoDB API and enables developers to use existing Memcached clients to bypass the expense of query parsing and go directly to InnoDB data for lookups and transactional compliant updates.  The API makes it possible to re-use standard Memcached libraries and clients, while extending Memcached functionality by integrating a persistent, crash-safe, transactional database back-end.  The implementation is shown here:So does this option provide a performance benefit over SQL?  Internal performance benchmarks using a customized Java application and test harness show some very promising results with a 9X improvement in overall throughput for SET/INSERT operations:You can follow the InnoDB team blog for the methodology, implementation and internal test cases that generated these results here. New Instrumentation in Performance SchemaThe MySQL Performance Schema was introduced in MySQL 5.5 and is designed to provide point in time metrics for key performance indicators.  MySQL 5.6 improves the Performance Schema in answer to the most common DBA and Developer problems.  New instrumentations include: Statements/Stages What are my most resource intensive queries? Where do they spend time? Table/Index I/O, Table Locks Which application tables/indexes cause the most load or contention? Users/Hosts/Accounts Which application users, hosts, accounts are consuming the most resources? Network I/O What is the network load like? How long do sessions idle? Summaries Aggregated statistics grouped by statement, thread, user, host, account or object. The MySQL 5.6 Performance Schema is now enabled by default in the my.cnf file with optimized and auto-tune settings that minimize overhead (< 5%, but mileage will vary), so using the Performance Schema ona production server to monitor the most common application use cases is less of an issue.  In addition, new atomic levels of instrumentation enable the capture of granular levels of resource consumption by users, hosts, accounts, applications, etc. for billing and chargeback purposes in cloud computing environments.The MySQL docs are an excellent resource for all that is available and that can be done with the 5.6 Performance Schema. Better Condition Handling - GET DIAGNOSTICSMySQL 5.6 enables developers to easily check for error conditions and code for exceptions by introducing the new MySQL Diagnostics Area and corresponding GET DIAGNOSTICS interface command.   Web application stopped behaving normally after migration from Dedicated servers to Ec2 servers Old Dedicated Server configuration systemtype: 32 bit operating system. RAM: 3.99 Gb Ram Processer : 1.86 GHZ New Servers in EC2 systemtype: 64 bit operating system. RAM: 3.99 Gb Ram Processer : 2.73 GHZ - 2.31 GHZ Everthing is working fine in our production server. But as we migrated our web application from old servers to new servers and transferred the entire network traffice to new servers.Site suddenly stopped behaving abnormally. Sometimes it's super fast Some times slow. sometimes normal some times super slow and sometimes no response This all above happens with a time interval or around 2 - 3 minutes. This went on happening 8 - 10 hours. Few differences in old and new servers are Old servers are using II6 and New servers are using IIS 7.5. We are using exactly the same code in the old and new servers. Even the ec2 servers are having higher CPU then older servers but still having lower. But not sure how this is happned.   I googled and looked into all unkown issues on ubuntu forums but I can't figure out why a 10.04 LTS server won't detect the last LTS 12.04.1. I guess since 12.04 is a fresh dist, not much is reported for related issues Here is what I did : apt-get update apt-get upgrade apt-get install update-manager-core it was already installed so no update for this package. • ASP.NET MVC 2 from Scratch &ndash; Part 1 Listing Data from Database

  Part 1 - Listing Data from Database: Let us now learn ASP.NET MVC 2 from Scratch by actually developing a front end website for the Chinook database, which is an alternative to the traditional Northwind database. You can get the Chinook database from here. As always the best way to learn something is by working on it and doing something. The Chinook database has the following schema, a quick look will help us implementing the application in a efficient way. Let us first implement a grid view table with the list of Employees with some details, this table also has the Details, Edit and Delete buttons on it to do some operations. This is series of post will concentrate on creating a simple CRUD front end for Chinook DB using ASP.NET MVC 2. In this post, we will look at listing all the possible Employees in the database in a tabular format, from which, we can then edit and delete them as required. In this post, we will concentrate on setting up our environment and then just designing a page to show a tabular information from the database. We need to first setup the SQL Server database, you can download the required version and then set it up in your localhost. Then we need to add the LINQ to SQL Classes required for us to enable interaction with our database. Now after you do the above step, just use your Server Explorer in VS 2010 to actually navigate to the database, expand the tables node and then drag drop all the tables onto the Object Relational Designer space and you go you will have the tables visualized as classes. As simple as that. Now for the purpose of displaying the data from Employee in a table, we will show only the EmployeeID, Firstname and lastname. So let us create a class to hold this information. So let us add a new class called EmployeeList to the ViewModels. We will send this data model to the View and this can be displayed in the page. public class EmployeeList { public int EmployeeID { get; set; } public string Firstname { get; set; } public string Lastname { get; set; } public EmployeeList(int empID, string fname, string lname) { this.EmployeeID = empID; this.Firstname = fname; this.Lastname = lname; } } Ok now we have got the backend ready. Let us now look at the front end view now. We will first create a master called Site.Master and reuse it across the site. In the actual Index.aspx view, we add the code to simply iterate through the collection of EmployeeList that was sent to the View via the Controller. So in the top of the Index.aspx view, we have this inherits which says Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<IEnumerable<ChinookMvcSample.ViewModels.EmployeeList>>" In this above line, we dictate that the page is consuming a IEnumerable collection of EmployeeList. So once we specify this and compile the project. Here we are adding the id=”links” to the hyperlinks that is created in the page. In the index.aspx page, we add some jQuery stuff add alternate row colours and highlight colours for rows on mouse over. Now the Controller that handles the requests and directs the request to the right view.
