    Hi all, I am currently developing some user controls so that I can use them at several places within a project. One control is a about editing a list of addresses for a customer. Since this needs to be done at several places within the project I want to make it a simple user control. The user control contains a repeater control. By default the repeater displays one address item to be edited. If more addresses need to be added, the user can click on a button to append an additional address to be entered. The user control should work for creating new addresses as well as editing existing ones. The address business entity looks something like this: public class Address { public string Street { get; set; } public City City { get; set; } public Address(string street, City city) { Check.NotNullOrEmpty(street); Check.NotNull(city); Street = street; City = city; } } As you can see an address can only be instantiated if there is a street and a city. Now my idea was that the user control exposes a collection property called Addresses. The getter of this property collects the addresses from the repeater and return it in a collection. The setter would databind the addresses to be edited to the repeater. Like this: public partial class AddressEditControl : System.Web.UI.UserControl { public IEnumerable<Address> Addresses { get { IList<Address> addresses = new List<Address>(); // collect items from repeater and create addresses foreach (RepeaterItem item in addressRepeater.Items) { // collect values from repeater item addresses.Add(new Address(street, city)); } return addresses; } set { addressRepeater.DataSource = value; addressRepeater.DataBind(); } } } First I liked this approach since it is object oriented makes it very easy to reuse the control. But at some place in my project I wanted to use this control so a user could enter some addresses. And I wanted to pre-fill the street input field of each repeater item since I had that data so the user doesn't need to enter it all by his self. Now the problem is that this user control only accepts addresses in a valid state (since the address object has only one constructor). So I cannot do: IList<Addresses> addresses = new List<Address>(); addresses.Add(new Address("someStreet", null)); // i dont know the city yet (user has to find it out) addressControl.Addresses = addresses; So the above is not possible since I would get an error from address because the city is null. Now my question: How would I create such a control? ;) I was thinking about using an Address DTO instead of a real address, so it can later be mapped to an address. That way I can pass in and out an address collection which addresses don't need to be valid. Or did I misunderstood the way user controls work? Are there any best practices?

    Greetings Guru's, This is a little hard to explain, but I'll give it a shot. I have a quick question regarding to the .live() function in JQuery. I'm going to simplify the example here. I have a page "index.php" that has a container "#display_files_container" which is populated with anchor links that are generated dynamically by a different page "process.php". The links are loaded into that same <div> when those links are selected based on the attributes of that link. See Examples: INDEX.PHP <html> <head><title>index.php</title> <!-- this function below loads process.php and passes it the dirid variable via post. It then echo's the results out and we display them in the #display_files_container container. When you click on those links the process repeats. This works..... you can click though the directory tree and it loads the new links every time. However, it seems to want to .load() the process.php file many times over for one click. The number of times process.php is loaded seems to increase the more the links are clicked. So for example you can click on a link and firebug reports that process.php was loaded 23 times..... Eventually I would imagine I would record a stackoverflow. Please let me know if you have any ideas. Are there any ways that I can assure that .live() loads the process.php file only once? Is there any way to prevent such behavior / to override the page lifecycle somehow? I cannot initialize the user controls in the page's Init-event, because i have to access the Session-Store (not initialized in Page_Init). Any advice is welcome... EDIT: Since we hold all criteria informations in the storage backend (including the count of criteria) and that store uses the userid from the session, we cannot use Page_Init... just for clarification EDIT #2: I managed to get past some of the problems. Since i'm now using simple types, im able to bind all the data declaratively (using a repeater with a simple ItemTemplate). It is bound to the control, they are rendered in correct fashion. On Postback, all the data is rebound to the user control, data is available in the OnDataBinding and OnLoad events, everything looks fine. But as soon it enters the real event (bound to the button control of the user control), all field values are lost somehow... Does anybody know, how the page lifecycle continues to process the request after Databinding/Loading ? I'm going crazy about this issue...

I think the reason is that the ActualWidth and ActualHeight of the viewport and both zero (and these are read-only properties, so I can't set them manually). (I have tested the exact same with an actual rendered Viewport3D, so I know the issue is not with my converter method.) Any idea how I can get WPF to assign the ActualWidth and ActualHeight based on my Width and Height settings? I tried setting the HorizontalAlignment and VerticalAlignment to Left and Top, respectively, and I also messed with the MinWidth and MinHeight, but none of these properties had any effect on the ActualWidth or ActualHeight.

    We're currently rewriting our organizations ASP.NET MVC application which has been written twice already. (Once MVC1, once MVC2). (Thank god it wasn't production ready and too mature back then). This time, anyhow, it's going to be the real deal because we'll be implementing more and more features as time passes and the testruns with MVC1 and MVC2 showed that we're ready to upscale. Until now we were using Controller and Action authorization with AuthorizeAttribute's. But that won't do it any longer because our views are supposed to show different results based on the logged in user. Use Case: Let's say you're a major of a city and you login to a federal managed software and you can only access and edit the citizens in your city. Where you are allowed to access those citizens via an entry in a specialized MajorHasRightsForCity table containing a MajorId and a CityId. What I thought of is something like this: Public ViewResult Edit(int cityId) { if(Access.UserCanEditCity(currentUser, cityId) { var currentCity = Db.Cities.Single(c => c.id == cityId); Return View(currentCity); } else { TempData["ErrorMessage"] = "Yo are not awesome enough to edit that shizzle!" Return View(); } The static class Access would do all kinds of checks and return either true or false from it's methods. This implies that I would need to change and edit all of my controllers every time I change something. (Which would be a pain, because all unit tests would need to be adjusted every time something changes..) Is doing something like that even allowed?

  • Recommendations on developing a WPF application without using MVVM or similar

    We were building out the next version of an in-house thick-client application using WPF/Prism (Composite Application Library). As we were nearly done with the client our team was put under new management and shortly thereafter: We were then directed to drop the Prism framework to keep things simple. This includes not using any type of Inversion of Control. We were directed to build out the WPF application without using MVVM or similar; and more along the lines of a traditional WinForm application. The idea is that if a developer sees a control in Visual Studio’s designer view, then (s)he should be able to click on the control and see exactly what it's doing without having to traverse through a view-model (or similar). We have now been tasked with building out the WPF application using one primary Window, use a Frame Control to contain the content, and use a Ribbon outside of the frame for the menu items. Reason we were provided to use Frame Control: a. We will show a view in the Frame with a Page (not a user control) and then load the page in the Frame. b. When a new view is to be shown in the Frame, the current view (Page) will be closed/disposed and the new view (Page) will take its place in the Frame. c. When a developer looks at the Page in design view, (s)he will be able to click on any control and see exactly what is being done. Given the restrictions of 1 and 2 above, we’d like to present another method of building out the application that: Can be presented as an alternative to using the “Frame Methodology” (item 3 above) but still provides the same type of functionality. Does not use MVVM (see #1 and #2 above). Provided the direction we’ve been given, any suggestions as to an alternative we can present?     I'm using a linq group by query (with two grouping parameters) and would like to use the resulting data in a nested repeater. var dateGroups = from row in data.AsEnumerable() group row by new { StartDate = row["StartDate"], EndDate = row["EndDate"] }; "data" is a DataTable from an SqlDataAdapter-filled DataSet. "dateGroups" is used in the parent repeater, and I can access the group keys using Eval("key.StartDate") and Eval("key.EndDate"). Since dateGroups actually contains all the data rows grouped neatly by Start/End date, I'd like to access those rows to display the data in a child repeater. To what would I set the child repeater's DataSource? I have tried every expression in markup I could think of; I think the problem is that I'm trying to access an anonymous member (and I don't know how.) In case it doesn't turn out to be obvious, what would be the expression to access the elements in each iteration of the child repeater? Is there an expression that would let me set the DataSource in the markup, or will it have to be in the codebehind on some event in the parent repeater?

I'm as guilty as many of sometimes getting it into my head that something has to be done a certain way and then killing myself to make it happen when there's a much cleaner and simpler solution.

  • Automatically calling OnDetaching() for Silverlight Behaviors

    I am using several Blend behaviors and triggers on a silverlight control. I am wondering if there is any mechanism for automatically detaching or ensuring that OnDetaching() is called for a behavior or trigger when the control is no longer being used (i.e. removed from the visual tree). My problem is that there is a managed memory leak with the control because of one of the behaviors. The behavior subscribes to an event on some long-lived object in the OnAttached() override and should be unsubscribing to that event in the OnDetaching() override so that it can become a candidate for garbage collection. However, OnDetaching() never seems to be getting called when I remove the control from the visual tree... the only way I can get it to happen is by explicit detaching the behavior BEFORE removing the control and then it is properly garbage collected. Right now my only solution was to create a public method in the code-behind for the control that can go through and detach any known behaviors that would cause garbage collection problems. It would be up to the client code to know to call this before removing the control from the panel. I don't really like this approach, so I am looking for some automatic way of doing this that I am overlooking or a better suggestion. public void DetachBehaviors() { foreach (var behavior in Interaction.GetBehaviors(this.LayoutRoot)) { behavior.Detach(); } //... //continue detaching all known problematic behaviors.... }

    This might be basic question, however I am confused on some .Net Concpets. I am trying to create a "Data Browser" in VB.net. Similar to a Web Browser however each Tab in the Data Browser is a view of some Data (from a database or flat files) not a webpage. The UI on each Tab is mostly the same. A list Box (showing datatypes, etc), a TextBox (where you can create a filter), and a DataGridView, a DataSource Picker, etc. The only thing that would change on each tab is that there could be a custom "Viewer". In most cases (depending on the datasource), this would be the datagrid, however in other cases it would be a treecontrol. From reading through the .Net documents, it appears that I need to Create a Custom Control (MyDataBrowser) Consisting of a Panel with all the common Controls (except the viewer). Every time the user says "New Tab", a new tabpage is created and this MyDataBrowser Control is added, The MyDataBrowser control would contain some function that was able to then create the approriate viewer based on the data at hand. If this is the suggested route, how is the best way to go about creating the MyDataBrowser Control (A) Is this a Custom Control Library? (B) Is this an Inhertited Form? (C) Is this an Inherrited User Control? I assume that I have to create a .DLL and add as a reference. Any direction on this would be appreciated. Does the custom Control have its own properties (I would like to save/load these from a configuration file). Is it possible to add a backgroundworker to this customcontrol? Thanks.

  • Unable to fetch initial output of "defrag" commad in Windows Server 2008 R2 in WOW64 environment.

    Hi All, [Application & code back ground] I have an MFC application which is executing on Windows Server 2008 R2 in WOW64 environment. In which on user input it defragments the selected drive on the disk. I initiated the process(.i.e. cmd /c defrag –v c:) of defragmentation using the CreateProcess() API, along with this to display output of the process on the main screen I created the pipe using CreatePipe() API. I used PeekNamedPipe() & ReadFile() API to get the output and display. [Problem Area] When the process is launched I am not getting the initial output as below: Microsoft Disk fragmenter Copyright © 2007 Microsoft Crop. Invoking defragmentation on (C:)…. I constantly monitor the output of the process while it is under progress but not able to get any thing as output in the pipe. It seem the process is not doing any thing and appears as if the application is not responding. But after certain period of time, once the process is about to completed I get result along with the initial data.   • Print Preview Control used in a custom Print Preview Dialog.

    I have successfully implemented printing and print preview for my app using the PrintDocument, PrintDialog and PrintPreviewDialog classes of .NET. However my app uses a toolkit to improve the appearance of the standard .NET controls. There are versions of most .NET controls in the toolkit, but none for the Print controls. Therefore to ensure that the appearance of these controls matches the rest of the app I am creating a custom PrintPreviewDialog based on a toolkit form and embedding a .NET PrintPrewviewControl in it. My problem is that the PrintPreviewControl always shows "No pages to display". I had no trouble getting this to work using the .NET PrintPreviewDialog and cannot see what I am doing wrong. This is a .NET 2.0 PrintPreviewControl and so I know that I need to call InvalidatePreview() after assigning the PrintDocument. However it does not seem to matter where i place it, the PrintPage event handler never gets called... EDIT: I've just noticed that while the original PrintDocument m_printDocument shows a PrintPageHandler in its properties, the m_printPreviewControl.Document does not.     Here is a perplexing issue I have not seen a good answer to on StackOverflow, although there a couple stabs at it... I have a situation where I'd like to do this: <asp:Repeater ID="MyRepeater" runat="server" OnItemDataBound="MyRepeater_ItemDataBound"> <ItemTemplate> <li id="id?"> All the other stuff </li> </ItemTemplate> </asp:Repeater> The question... is how do I get the ID of my <li> elements to be id1, id2, id3, etc., based on the ItemIndex they are bound to? So far the most... er..."elegant" solution I've come up with is to replace the <li> with an asp:Literal and dump the <li...>' text. But that just feels... so wrong. And no, I'm not using ASP.NET 4.0, which I've read will provide this functionality.
