    I'm making an application in which I'm implementing auto-monitor turn off when system is idle, i.e. when user is not interacting with the system.   • How do I subscribe to a MSMQ queue but only "peek" the message in .Net?

    We have a MSMQ Queue setup that receives messages and is processed by an application. We'd like to have another process subscribe to the Queue and just read the message and log it's contents. I have this in place already, the problem is it's constantly peeking the queue. CPU on the server when this is running is around 40%. The mqsvc.exe runs at 30% and this app runs at 10%. I'd rather have something that just waits for a message to come in, get's notified of it, and then logs it without constantly pooling the server.   • Using ELMAH and URLRewritingNet Together

    I have ELMAH setup on my production server and it has done a fantastic job of letting me know about any niggles - as well as any creative SQL injection! I've decided to introduce URl Rewriting and went for http://www.urlrewriting.net/ in the end. It was nice and easy to setup and it's doing exactly what I want with the customer-facing site. The problem is ELMAH.   • BITS client fails to specify HTTP Range header

    Our system is designed to deploy to regions with unreliable and/or insufficient network connections. We build our own fault tolerating data replication services that uses BITS. Due to some security and maintenance requirements, we implemented our own ASP.NET file download service on the server side, instead of just letting IIS serving up the files. When BITS client makes an HTTP download request with the specified range of the file, our ASP.NET page pulls the demanded file segment into memory and serve that up as the HTTP response. That is the theory. ;) This theory fails in artificial lab scenarios but I would not let the system deploy in real life scenarios unless we can overcome that. Lab scenario: I have BITS client and the IIS on the same developer machine, so practically I have enormous network "bandwidth" and BITS is intelligent enough to detect that. As BITS client discovers the unlimited bandwidth, it gets more and more "greedy". At each HTTP request, BITS wants to grasp greater and greater file ranges (we are talking about downloading CD iso files, videos), demanding 20-40MB inside a single HTTP request, a size that I am not comfortable to pull into memory on the server side as one go. I can overcome that simply by giving less than demanded. It is OK. However, BITS gets really "confident" and "arrogant" demanding files WITHOUT specifying the download range, i.e., it wants the entire file in a single request, and this is where things go wrong. I do not know how to answer that response in the case of a 600MB file. If I just provide the starting 1MB range of the file, BITS client keeps sending HTTP requests for the same file without download range to continue, it hammers its point that it wants the entire file in one go. Since I am reluctant to provide the entire file, BITS gives up after several trials and reports error. Any thoughts?

  • A good way in .NET Winforms to have user entered time frame?

    Hi, Does anyone know of a good way to have a user enter an amount of time (hours and minutes) using winforms controls? At the moment I have two numeric up downs, one for time and one for minutes that I then parse to create a timespan. The only other idea I have is a text box that a user can enter a "00:00" time in, and validate the input. Both of these ways seem a bit bad (in UI terms) though. Any ideas? Thanks

    This is a general question, but I'll explain my specific need at the moment: I want to find the framework class that enables one to choose an image at design-time. I can find the editor that is used at run-time - its the Drawing.Design.ImageEditor. At design time, however, a different editor pops up which allows one to choose an image from resources. I'm guessing I could run some kind of program, then open up the image editor, from the property grid, and see what new windows/classes have been created? Thanks

I can get the HTML on the postback and do stuff with it. However, I also want to do some client-side stuff with it, specifically take a selected item out of another control, and insert it into the text by handling the onchange event.   • Not possible to load DropDownList on FormView from code behind??

    I have a UserControl, containing a FormView, containing a DropDownList. The FormView is bound to a data control. Like so: <asp:FormView ID="frmEdit" DataKeyNames="MetricCode" runat="server" DefaultMode="Edit" DataSourceID="llbDataSource" Cellpadding="0" > <EditItemTemplate> <asp:DropDownList ID="ParentMetricCode" runat="server" SelectedValue='<%# Bind("ParentMetricCode") %>' /> etc, etc I am trying to populate the DropDownList from the codebehind. If this was not contained in a FormView, I would normally just do it in the Page_Load event. However, that does not work within a FormView, as as soon as I try to do it, accessing the dropdownlist in code, ie: theListcontrol = CType(formView.FindControl(listControlName), System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl) ...the data binding mechansim of the FormView is invoked, which, of course, tries to bind the DropDownList to the underlying datasource, causing a *'ParentMetricCode' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items. Parameter name: value * error, since the DropDownList has not yet been populated. I tried performing the load in the DataBinding() event of the FormView, but then: theListcontrol = CType(formView.FindControl(listControlName), System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl) ...fails, as the FormView.Controls.Count = 0 at that point. Is this impossible? (I do not want to have to use a secondary ObjectDataSource to bind the dropdownlist to)

    I'm supporting a ASP.NET v2.0 app installed on a Windows 2003 SP3 Enterprise on a quad core 8G machine running on .NET 2.0 SP1. before enabling the config, ran "tasklist /m mscorwks.dll" Image Name PID Modules w3wp.exe 7888 mscorwks.dll add under section in web.config ran IISRESET, rebooted server too ran "tasklist /m mscorsvr.dll" INFO: No tasks are running which match the specified criteria. ran "tasklist /m mscorwks.dll" Image Name PID Modules w3wp.exe 6251 mscorwks.dll It seems like gcServer is not taking effect. Are there any additional settings/ configurations necessary to get it working?

    The performance differences between C/C++ and C# are astounding. An ASP.NET page loads in 1/8 the time that a PHP script does haha.... WPF, aka " The Future ", (you know it will be, all the companies are gonna want cool looking desktop apps, don't kid yourself.) And it has huge performance hits just to start up. We've let Microsoft make us as developers lazy! Why do I hate this, it's such a good thing? Are we at a point in time where the majority of computers can handle this kinda crap? I remember when performance used to matter. Anyways, I'm writing a .NET library and ever since I found out LINQ is slower than traditional delegates which is slower than the normal procedural code... well it's a guilty evil I feel for every LINQ query I write, because they are so beautiful. Am I just too much of a performance stickler? Or just too big of a nerd?

  • Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerServerErrorException: .... The status code returned from the server w

    Hi All, I have seen a few posts regarding this issue but not one specific to my problem and I have no ideas as to what I need to do to debug this. I have some combo boxes on an aspx pages, when I select a value from the first one, it fills the second with value and so on with the third and fourth. This works with no problems until I wrap an asp.net UpdatePanel around the combo boxes and try to "ajaxify" the whole process so the page isn't dancing around. The exact error I get is: Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerServerErrorException: An unknown error occurred while processing the request on the server. The status code returned from the server was: 404 Some things to note: I am using URL rewriting - This is what I think is causing the problem The error will occur whenever I choose a selection for a SECOND time. This means that I could select a value from the first combo box and get the same error (so it is happening on the second postback - No matter which combo box it's from). I have tried setting the EnablePartialRendering="false" on teh scriptmanager but as I said, it works when not using ajax, so I don't know how to debug the issue. My server is Windows 2008 running IIS& with ASP.NET 2.0. I would really appreciate your help Thanks in advance.

  • How to I serialize a large graph of .NET object into a SQL Server BLOB without creating a large bu

    We have code like: ms = New IO.MemoryStream bin = New System.Runtime.Serialization.Formatters.Binary.BinaryFormatter bin.Serialize(ms, largeGraphOfObjects) dataToSaveToDatabase = ms.ToArray() // put dataToSaveToDatabase in a Sql server BLOB But the memory steam allocates a large buffer from the large memory heap that is giving us problems. So how can we stream the data without needing enough free memory to hold the serialized objects. I am looking for a way to get a Stream from SQL server that can then be passed to bin.Serialize() so avoiding keeping all the data in my processes memory. Likewise for reading the data back... Some more background. This is part of a complex numerical processing system that processes data in near real time looking for equipment problems etc, the serialization is done to allow a restart when there is a problem with data quality from a data feed etc. (We store the data feeds and can rerun them after the operator has edited out bad values.) Therefore we serialize the object a lot more often then we de-serialize them. The objects we are serializing include very large arrays mostly of doubles as well as a lot of small “more normal” objects. We are pushing the memory limit on a 32 bit system and make the garage collector work very hard. (Effects are being made elsewhere in the system to improve this, e.g. reusing large arrays rather then create new arrays.) Often the serialization of the state is the last straw that courses an out of memory exception; our peak memory usage is while this serialization is being done. I think we get large memory pool fragmentation when we de-serialize the object, I expect there are also other problem with large memory pool fragmentation given the size of the arrays. (This has not yet been investigated, as the person that first looked at this is a numerical processing expert, not a memory management expert.) Are customers use a mix of Sql Server 2000, 2005 and 2008 and we would rather not have different code paths for each version of Sql Server if possible. We can have many active models at a time (in different process, across many machines), each model can have many saved states. Hence the saved state is stored in a database blob rather then a file. As the spread of saving the state is important, I would rather not serialize the object to a file, and then put the file in a BLOB one block at a time.   • WHy am I unable to add text along with <%# Container.DataItem %> in repeater in user control

    I have a User Control which is dynamically placed by CodeBehind as follows: Dim myControl As Control = CType(Page.LoadControl("~/Controls/mainMenu.ascx"), Control) If InStr(Request.ServerVariables("url"), "/Login.aspx") <= 0 Then mainMenu.Controls.Add(myControl) End If As per an example from my previous question on here. Within this Control is a repeater which calls a database to generate values. My Repeater mark-up is as follows <asp:Repeater runat="server" ID="locationRepeater" OnItemDataBound="getQuestionCount"> <ItemTemplate> <p id='locationQuestions' title='<%# Container.DataItem %>' runat='server'></p> </ItemTemplate> </asp:Repeater> The example above works fine, but I want to be able to prepend text to <%# Container.DataItem %> in the title attribute of that <p to print to the browser like this is some text DATA_ITEM_OUTPUT When I try to do that though, it prints this is some text <%# Container.DataItem %> exactly like that, ie, turning <%# Container.DataItem %> into text, NOT the value from the repeater code. It was working fine before I made it into a dynamically inserted control, so I am thinking I might have something being generated in the wrong order, but given that it works without any prepended text, I am stumped to fix it! I'm new to .net and using vb.net, please could someone point me in the right direction?
