• Parent Thread exiting before Child Threads [python]

  I'm using Python in a webapp (CGI for testing, FastCGI for production) that needs to send an occasional email (when a user registers or something else important happens). Since communicating with an SMTP server takes a long time, I'd like to spawn a thread for the mail function so that the rest of the app can finish up the request without waiting for the email to finish sending. I tried using thread.start_new(func, (args)), but the Parent return's and exits before the sending is complete, thereby killing the sending process before it does anything useful. Is there anyway to keep the process alive long enough for the child process to finish?

  I have a servlet automatically firing up when the app server starts, and in its init(), I'm making another thread: init(){ new FooThread() } in FooThread(), i want to periodically check the status of a DB value, then depending on the value, make a web service call. When these two tasks complete, I want the thread to sleep to wait a certain period then repeat. This cycle would just continue forever. • VBscript and CMD writing into a text file

  I am writing a script that executes and write everything to the file here is example, I stored the complete command in the variable 'Command' , Command = "ftp ftp.xyz.com 21 " & vbCRLF and then executing it in command prompt, shell.Run "%comspec% /c FTP " & Command & " > " & E:/abc.txt, 0, TRUE but when this program execute it won't write anything to the text file because this is an incomplete command, this command on execution prompt user to input username and password of FTP, how can i do this , that my programm automatically input username and password when prompt and then write everything to file ?

• C++ new line not translating

  First off, I'm a complete beginner at C++. I'm coding something using an API, and would like to pass text containing new lines to it, and have it print out the new lines at the other end. If I hardcode whatever I want it to print out, like so printInApp("Hello\nWorld"); it does come out as separate lines in the other end, but if I retrieve the text from the app using a method that returns a const char then pass it straight to printInApp (which takes const char as argument), it comes out as a single line. Why's this and how would I go about to fix it?

  I've searched for an exhaustive explanation of the meaning of each event monitored by the perf stat command; I've found a tutorial which explains quite well how to use different the features of the perf tool. However, it doesn't explain the meaning of several events that can be observed (and there are a lot!!). Someone know where is a quite simple and complete documentation about the events listed by the perf list command? In particular, I'm interested in finding out the percentage of cpu used by some application I wrote. Can i measure it directly through cpu-clock or task-clock? What's the meaning of these two events?   Hi experts, I am trying to read an excel 2003 file which consist of 62 columns and 2000 rows and then draw 2d dendrogram from 2000 pattern of 2 categories of a data as my plot in matlab. • What workflow should I use for JavaScript editing?

  Warning: I have very little JavsScript experience. In my past programming experience, I usually have a standalone interpreter/compiler, a text editor and a command line to compile/run my software or my tests (I love test driven development). I really like it this way, since I have the feeling of being in complete control over the tools. However, editing JavaScript I need to put statements in a text file , open my web browser and click on reload. I don't feel comfortable with it, as I cannot really see what is going on (besides some alert boxes). Can you suggest me (I'm on a Mac) another workflow? Perhaps with a debugger? Is there a standalone JavaScript interpreter?

• Can I have multiple instance of the mandlebrot example in one program?

  Basically what I did is I took the Mandlebrot example and have 3 instances of it in my program. So the program would look like a mainwindow that has 3 mandlebrot widgets in it, one besides the other. Is it possible that GDB doesnt support debugging multiple intances of a classe that derives from qthread or is it thread-unsafe to do so? I don't have any problems at run-time but when I put breakpoints in a function called by the QThread run() function I get a segmentation fault. I can clearly see that the function doesn't complete before returning to the breakpoint ie I the program stops at the breakpoint, I step into the lines of codes one by one but after a couple of instructions another thread startS using the function(even though they are different instances).

• Self-contained python installation with executable tools included (pip, orbited, etc)

  I'm trying deploy a Python application on Windows as a folder that includes a full python 2.6 folder. I don't need/want a fancy solution like py2exe, I'm just trying to automate deployment of a web application. So long as I include python26.dll and set the PYTHONHOME correctly, things seem to work if I just include the Python26 folder in its entirety. However a number of the Python26/Script files don't work. For instance, pip.exe, orbited.exe, and morbid.exe all do nothing (complete with no output) when I try to run them on a system that doesn't have a real Python26 installation. I've run out of ideas. Suggestions?

  I have a collection of span elements. In the code I have a global variable that represents the "selected" object. Using the click event when a span is clicked I reset the object's class, reset the global variable, then set the object to the variable and change its class (to make it "highlighted"). Just because Java is Open Source, the licensing on developed applications starts at the developer, correct? Someone is arguing about the use of code from a complete program just because "Java is Open Source". • TFS for version maintainance

  I am part of a team that releases versions of our software 4-5 times each year to our customers. We maintain the previous 2-3 versions of our product by correcting any errors that we come across in later versions. We are using TFS 2008 for source control and are trying to find the best way of maintaining the older versions. We currently create a branch of our application each time we do a new version, but we are looking for a good way to update old versions more easily. For example, we complete 9.5 but two weeks after we created the branch and are working on 10.0, we realize that 9.5 has an error. We currently make the change in version 10.0 and then open 9.5 to make the change again. Is there anyway of automating this? Thanks!

I'm at the part of creating a sprite, assigning it an image and then rendering.   This is mostly a language-agnostic question. If I'm waiting for two events to complete (say, two IO events or http requests), what is the best pattern to deal with this.   I'm making a little java game in which I would have two threads (well as the FIRST step towards multithreading...), one for the logic and one for the drawing. So my question is: How can I make those two communicating which each other? Requirements: accessing variables and object from a another thread syncing them so they each complete a same number of "loops" in the same time. (the logic calculates and then the another one draws the results and the loop begins again...) So how is this achievable in java? Thanks in advance!

• C# Looping A Process Over And Over Until A User Presses A Key

  I have a schedule checker that needs to run until a user presses a key to make it stop. My thoughts on doing this are as follows: The user starts the process Process runs every 10 seconds When the process is not running, Console.ReadLine(); gives the user the option to press "q" to stop the process My approach would work fine except the user would have to wait however long the process takes to complete before being able to stop it. Is there any way to simultaneously run the process while being able to take a user input?

• Best way to notify several java applets/applications of a change on a server

  I need to know the best (fastest) way to have a server (preferably a php based one, but a jsp/servlet one could be set up as well using google app engine) notify several java applets/applications that a change has occurred to the data. The way i am picturing this to work will be very similar to that of the way i think an online java game (like Runescape) works User 1: Changes data on server. Server: returns success to User 1, notifies connected computers of change. Connected Computer 1: processes change, returns success to server. Connected Computer 2: processes change, returns success to server. Connected Computer 3: processes change, returns success to server. Connected Computer 4: processes change, returns success to server. I am hoping to have this entire process complete in half a second, and not involve polling as there will be long durations of nothing, followed by a sudden moment where 4 events happen in succession.

• How to improve the speed of a loop containing a sqlalchemy query statement as conditional

  This loop checks if a record is in the sqlite database and builds a list of dictionaries for those records that are missing and then executes a multiple insert statement with the list. This works but it is very slow (at least i think it is slow) as it takes 5 minutes to loop over 3500 queries. • Advice on pursuing a masters in information systems or computer science

  I wanted some advice about pursuing a graduate program. I was recently accepted into a masters in computer science but I do have about 2 years of pre-reqs to complete. However, I attained my undergrad in information systems. I originally applied to computer science because I felt it provided me with more technical knowledge necessary in today's market. I would like to know if you feel four years would be worth it to attain a masters in computer science or spend two years completing attaining a masters in information systems. Thank you!   How do we know when enumeration is finished? The docs say: the return value of nextObject is nil when all objects have been enumerated. I was hoping to implement some "delegate-like" behavior whereby ... if (nextObject == nil) { do something because we're done! } But I see there is no such thing as: enumerationDidFinish: where in the following block could I check for the enumerator to be complete?
