• Do I have to hash twice in C#?

  I have code like the following: class MyClass { string Name; int NewInfo; } List<MyClass> newInfo = .... // initialize list with some values Dictionary<string, int> myDict = .... // initialize dictionary with some values foreach(var item in newInfo) { if(myDict.ContainsKey(item.Name)) // 'A' I hash the first time here myDict[item.Name] += item.NewInfo // 'B' I hash the second (and third?) time here else myDict.Add(item.Name, item.NewInfo); } Is there any way to avoid doing two lookups in the Dictionary -- the first time to see if contains an entry, and the second time to update the value? There may even be two hash lookups on line 'B' -- one to get the int value and another to update it.

  I was reading this Ars article on password security and it mentioned there are sites that "hash the password before transmitting"? Now, assuming this isn't using an SSL connection (HTTPS), a. is this actually secure and b. if it is how would you do this in a secure manor? Edit 1: (some thoughts based on first few answers) c. If you do hash the password before transmission, how do you use that if you only store a salted hash version of the password in your user credentials databas? d. Just to check, if you are using a HTTPS secured connection, is any of this necessary?

• Combine MD5 hashes of multiple files

  I have 7 files that I'm generating MD5 hashes for. The hashes are used to ensure that a remote copy of the data store is identical to the local copy. Unfortunately, the link between these two copies of the data is mind numbingly slow. Changes to the data are very rare but I have a requirement that the data be synchronized at all times (or as soon as possible). Rather than passing 7 different MD5 hashes across my (extremely slow) communications link, I'd like to generate the hash for each file and then combine these hashes into a single hash which I can then transfer and then re-calculate/use for comparison on the remote side. If the "combined hash" differs, then I'd start sending the 7 individual hashes to determine exactly which file(s) have been changed. For example, here are the MD5 hashes for the 7 files as of last week: 0709d609d69385255c496436eb50402c 709465a74411bd596595c7b9b158ae6a 4ab657320ef33e3d5eb498e4c13d41b7 3b49c6ab199994fd776bb63761414e72 0fc28c5a010fc3c06c0c930c88e31a15 c4ecd214662cac5aae0e53f6f252bf0e 8b086431e43148a2c2d943ba30d31cc6 I'd like to combine these hashes together such that I get a single unique value (perhaps another MD5 hash?) that I can then send to the remote system. On the remote system, I'd then perform the same calculation to determine if the data as a whole has been changed. If it has, then I'd start sending the individual hashes, etc. The most important factor is that my "combined hash" be short enough so that it uses less bandwidth than just sending all 7 hashes in the first place. I thought of writing the 7 MD5 hashes to a file and then hashing that file but is there a better way?

• Optimal strategy to make a C++ hash table, thread safe

  (I am interested in design of implementation NOT a readymade construct that will do it all.) Suppose we have a class HashTable (not hash-map implemented as a tree but hash-table) and say there are eight threads. Suppose read to write ratio is about 100:1 or even better 1000:1. Case A) Only one thread is a writer and others including writer can read from HashTable(they may simply iterate over entire hash table) Case B) All threads are identical and all could read/write. Can someone suggest best strategy to make the class thread safe with following consideration 1. Top priority to least lock contention 2. Second priority to least number of locks My understanding so far is thus : One BIG reader-writer lock(semaphore). Specialize the semaphore so that there could be eight instances writer-resource for case B, where each each writer resource locks one row(or range for that matter). (so i guess 1+8 mutexes) Please let me know if I am thinking on the correct line, and how could we improve on this solution.

  I'm in the process of setting up a VM environment for a MS certification exam (70-462). Following the training kit's instructions, I've set up a domain controller (DC) and two members (SQL-A, SQL-B) thus far. I can't figure out why I can't join the domain. DC IPv4 Address . . . : 10.10.10.10(Preferred) Subnet Mask. . . . : 255.0.0.0 DNS Servers. . . . : ::1 127.0.0.1 SQL-A IPv4 Address . . . : 10.10.10.20(Preferred) Subnet Mask. . . . : 255.0.0.0 DNS Servers. . . . : 10.10.10.10 SQL-B IPv4 Address . . . : 10.10.10.30(Preferred) Subnet Mask. . . . : 255.0.0.0 DNS Servers. . . . : 10.10.10.10 I've read how to do networking between virtual machines in virtualbox and the documentation. After trying various network adapter configurations, I can't get them to communicate in order to have the two members join the domain. When I ping from .30 to .10, I get: ping 10.10.10.10 Pinging 10.10.10.10 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 10.10.10.20: Destination host unreachable. • Select distinct ... inner join vs. select ... where id in (...)

  I'm trying to create a subset of a table (as a materialized view), defined as those records which have a matching record in another materialized view. For example, let's say I have a Users table with user_id and name columns, and a Log table, with entry_id, user_id, activity, and timestamp columns. First I create a materialized view of the Log table, selecting only those rows with timestamp some_date. Now I want a materliazed view of the Users referenced in my snapshot of the Log table. I can either create it as select * from Users where user_id in (select user_id from Log_mview), or I can do select distinct u.* from Users u inner join Log_mview l on u.user_id = l.user_id (need the distinct to avoid multiple hits from users with multiple log entries). The former seems cleaner and more elegant, but takes much longer. Am I missing something? Is there a better way to do this?

• Oracle to Join OECD Urban Roundtable for Mayors and Ministers

  Oracle is pleased to announce that Bastian Fischer, vice president and general manager for EMEA, Oracle Utilities, will participate in the 2010 Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) Urban Roundtable for Mayors and Ministers on 25 May in France. The roundtable, hosted by OECD Secretary General Angel Gurría, will help determine how cities can contribute to green growth incentives and address the challenges to success. The OECD is developing a global Green Growth Strategy that will identify policies and approaches that can shift production and consumption towards a clean, low-carbon and sustainable economy. Already, more than 500 European cities have signed up to the 2020 carbon pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 20 per cent in ten years. This initiative is driving the adoption of innovative technologies such as the smart gird, which deliver substantial benefits to support this mission by allowing utilities to manage their distribution grids more efficiently, reducing emissions and lowering the risk of outages. A successful smart grid infrastructure will allow green cities to manage their energy usage and succeed in their pledge to meet European targets for carbon reduction, which will undoubtedly be a discussion topic at the roundtable. A little over 2 years ago when Oracle completed its acquisition of Sun, a lot of community speculation arose regarding Oracle's Java commitment. Whether the fears and concerns were legitimate or not, the only way to emphatically demonstrate Oracle's seriousness with moving Java forward was through positive action. In 2010, Oracle committed to putting Java back on schedule whereby large gaps between release trains would be a thing of the past. And in 2011, that promise came true. With the 2011 summer release of JDK 7, the Java ecosystem now had a version brought up to date. And then in the fall of 2011, JavaFX 2.0 righted the JavaFX ship making rich internet applications a reality. Similar progress between Oracle and the Java community continues to blossom. • How to join video files from terminal?

  I have tried avidemux2_cli, mencoder, ffmpeg, cat.. But this doesn't always work (With the most of the times the error is that the audio codec is not the same) Maybe i put wrong options in the commands. So the commands: cat Sample.avi rrr.avi > complete.avi ffmpeg -i Sample.avi -i output.avi -vcodec copy -acodec copy complete.avi mencoder -ovc lavc -oac copy Sample.avi rrr.avi -o complete.avi avidemux2_cli --audio-codec copy --video-codec copy --output-format avi --load Sample.avi -append output.avi --save video.avi The cat problem is that it doesn't show error but it doesn't work always..Like the complete.avi will be exactly the same with Sample.avi Fmmpeg does nothing. The complete.avi is always the same with Sample.avi Mencoder error: All files must have identical audio codec and format for -oac copy. So the complete.avi is the same with Sample.avi avidemux2_cli there is no error but the complete.avi is again the same with Sample.avi.. So to sum up, all complete.avi are the same with Sample.avi.. And the problem is that they don't have the same audio codec ( i quess ).. Any ideas?

• Professional Developers, may I join you?

  I currently work in technical support for a software/hardware company and for the most part it's a good job, but it's feeling more and more like I'm getting 'stuck' here. No raises in the 5 years I've been here, and lately there seems to be more hiring from the outside than promotion from within. The work I do is more technical than end-user support, as we deal primarily with our field technicians who have a little more technical skill than the general user base. As a result I get into much more technical support issues... often tracking down bugs in our software, finding performance bottlenecks in our database schema, etc. The work I'm most proud of are the development projects I've come up with on my own, and worked on during lunch breaks and slow periods in Support. Over the years I've written a number of useful utilities for the company. Diagnostic type applications that several departments use and appreciate. These include apps that simulate our various hardware devices, log file analysis, time-saving utilities for our work processes, etc. My best projects have been the hardware simulation programs, which are the type of thing we probably wouldn't have put a full-time developer on had anyone thought to do it, but they've ended up being popular and useful enough to be used by development, QA, R&D, and Support. They allow us to interface our software with simulated hardware, rather than clutter up our work areas with bulky, hard to acquire equipment. Since starting here my life has moved forward (married, kid, one more on the way), but it feels like my career has not. I still earn what I earned walking in the door my first day. Company budget is tight, bonuses have gone down, and no raises or cost of living / inflation adjustments either. As the sole source of income for my family I feel I need to do more, and I'd like to have a more active role in creating something at work, not just cleaning up other people's mistakes. I enjoy technical work, and I think development is the next logical step in my career. I'd like to bring some "legitimacy" to my part-time development work, and make myself a more skilled and valuable employee. Ultimately if this can help me better support my family, that would be ideal. Can I make the jump to professional developer? I have an engineering degree, but no formal education in computer science. I write WinForms apps using the .NET framework, do some freelance web development, have volunteered to write software for a nonprofit, and have started experimenting with programming microcontrollers. I enjoy learning new things in the limited free time I have available. I think I have the aptitude to take on a development role, even in an 'apprentice' capacity if such an option is possible. Have any of you moved into development like this? Do any of you developers have any advice or cautionary tales? Are there better career options I haven't thought of?
