• Inline-editing: onBlur prevents onClick from being triggered (jQuery)

  Hello StackOverflow community! I'm currently working on my own jQuery plugin for inline-editing as those that already exist don't fit my needs. Anyway, I'd like to give the user the following (boolean) options concerning the way editing is supposed to work: submit_button reset_on_blur Let's say the user would like to have a submit button (submit_button = true) and wants the inline input element to be removed as soon as it loses focus (reset_on_blur = true). This leads to an onClick handler being registered for the button and an onBlur handler being registered for the input element. Every time the user clicks the button, however, the onBlur handler is also triggered and results in the edit mode being left, i.e. before the onClick event occurs. This makes submitting impossible. FYI, the HTML in edit mode looks like this: <td><input type="text" class="ie-input" value="Current value" /><div class="ie-content-backup" style="display: none;">Backup Value</div><input type="submit" class="ie-button-submit" value="Save" /></td> So, is there any way I could check in the onBlur handler if the focus was lost while activating the submit button, so that edit mode isn't left before the submit button's onClick event is triggered? • SignalR recording when a Web Page has closed

  I am using MassTransit request and response with SignalR. The web site makes a request to a windows service that creates a file. When the file has been created the windows service will send a response message back to the web site. The web site will open the file and make it available for the users to see. I want to handle the scenario where the user closes the web page before the file is created. In that case I want the created file to be emailed to them. Regardless of whether the user has closed the web page or not, the message handler for the response message will be run. What I want to be able to do is have some way of knowing within the response message handler that the web page has been closed. This is what I have done already. It doesnt work but it does illustrate my thinking. On the web page I have $(window).unload(function () { if (event.clientY < 0) { // $.connection.hub.stop(); $.connection.exportcreate.setIsDisconnected(); } }); exportcreate is my Hub name. In setIsDisconnected would I set a property on Caller? Lets say I successfully set a property to indicate that the web page has been closed. So if I am going to email the created file I have to do it within the response handler because I need the ExportGuid value. If I did store a value on Caller in my hub for the web page close, how would I access it in the response handler. • linked list elements gone?

  I create a linked list dynamically and initialize the first node in main(), and I add to the list every time I spawn a worker process. Before the worker process exits, I print the list. If so, that would mean that after I print the tree before exiting, the next thing I do is in the signal handler which is print the tree... which would mean i would print the tree twice? • Incompatible library creating new project with Aptana

  I am a ruby and rails newbie, so my abilities to debug this are somewhat limited. I have just added the eclipse plugin which failed, then downloaded the latest aptana studio which also failed. The failure was the same in both cases. The nature of the failure is that when I create a new rails project, I get an error message about an incompatible library version "C:/Ruby193/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/mongrel-1.1.5-x86-mswin32-60/lib/http11.so". The project is actually created, along with directories and files. Google searches around this error message have only returned a couple of hits, which were not very helpful I am wondering if this is about 64 bit libraries. My software stack is: Windows 7 home premium 64bit Aptana RadRails, build: 2.0.5.1278709071 Ruby1.9.3 gem 1.8.24 The console shows: "4320" C:/Ruby193/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require': iconv will be deprecated in the future, use String#encode instead. • Android Thumbnail Loading Problem

  I'm using a thumbnail loader in my project the one mentioned below. The problem is that the it loads all the thumbnails properly except the ones who's size is of about 40K. When our back end is giving that sort of thumbnails are not generated and sometimes this eventually leads to a Crash too. • Android: Stopping method to be called twice if already running.

  I'm trying to prevent my application to call the same method twice in the event of a double-click, or if the user presses different buttons quickly, almost at the same time. I have clickable Views, acting as buttons, that call the same method but passing different parameters. This is the call: startTheSearch(context, getState(), what, where); Inside this method I'm creating a new Thread, because it queries a web server for the result: new Thread(new Runnable() { public void run() { progDiag = ProgressDialog.show(ctx, null, "Searching", true); getServerXML(context, what, where, searchIsCustom, mOffset); handler.sendEmptyMessage(0); } }).start(); The problem is that upon two quick clicks, the method is fired twice, two threads are created, and consequently two new activities are created. That makes my app crash. So is there any way I can block the method being called if it's already running, or if the thread has started so it wont create a new one? Please, I really need to fix this. • Using NServiceBus behind a custom web service

  In this post I'd like to talk about an architecture scenario we had recently and how we were able to utilise NServiceBus to help us address this problem. Scenario Cognos is a reporting system used by one of my clients. A while back we developed a web service façade to allow line of business applications to be able to access reports from Cognos to support their various functions. The service was intended to provide access to reports which were quick running reports or pre-generated reports which could be accessed real-time on demand. One of the key aims of the web service was to provide a simple generic interface to allow applications to get any report without needing to worry about the complex .net SDK for Cognos. The web service also supported multi-hop kerberos delegation so that report data could be accesses under the context of the end user. This service was working well for a period of time. The Problem The problem we encountered was that reports were now also required to be available to batch processes. The original design was optimised for low latency so users would enjoy a positive experience, however when the batch processes started to request 250+ concurrent reports over an extended period of time you can begin to imagine the sorts of problems that come into play. The key problems this new scenario caused are: Users may be affected and the latency of on demand reports was significantly slower The Cognos infrastructure was not scaled sufficiently to be able to cope with these long peaks of load From a cost perspective it just isn't feasible to scale the Cognos infrastructure to be able to handle the load when it is only for a couple of hour window each night. We really needed to introduce a second pattern for accessing this service which would support high through-put scenarios. We also had little control over the batch process in terms of being able to throttle its load. We could however make some changes to the way it accessed the reports. The Approach My idea was to introduce a throttling mechanism between the Web Service Façade and Cognos. This would allow the batch processes to push reports requests hard at the web service which we were confident the web service can handle. The web service would then queue these requests and process them behind the scenes and make a call back to the batch application to provide the report once it had been accessed. In terms of technology we had some limitations because we were not able to use WCF or IIS7 where the MSMQ-Activated WCF services could have helped, but we did have MSMQ as an option and I thought NServiceBus could do just the job to help us here. The flow of how this would work was as follows: The batch applications would send a request for a report to the web service The web service uses NServiceBus to send the message to a Queue The NServiceBus Generic Host is running as a windows service with a message handler which subscribes to these messages The message handler gets the message, accesses the report from Cognos The message handler calls back to the original batch application, this is decoupled because the calling application provides a call back url The report gets into the batch application and is processed as normal This approach looks something like the below diagram: The key points are an application wanting to take advantage of the batch driven reports needs to do the following: Implement our call back contract Make a call to the service providing a call back url Provide a correlation ID so it knows how to tie each response back to its request What does NServiceBus offer in this solution So this scenario is not the typical messaging service bus type of solution people implement with NServiceBus, but it did offer the following: Simplified interaction with MSMQ Offered the ability to configure the number of processes working through the queue so we could find a balance between load on Cognos versus the applications end to end processing time NServiceBus offers retries and a way to manage failed messages NServiceBus offers a high availability setup The simple thing is that NServiceBus gave us the platform to build the solution on. We just implemented a message handler which functionally processed a message and we could rely on NServiceBus to do all of the hard work around managing the queues and all of the lower level things that would have took ages to write to any kind of robust level. Conclusion With this approach we were able to deal with a fairly significant performance issue with out too much rework. Hopefully this write up gives people some insight into ideas on how to leverage the excellent NServiceBus framework to help solve integration and high through-put scenarios.

• Using the Katana Authentication handlers with NancyFx

  Once you write an OWIN Middleware service, it can be reused everywhere as long as OWIN is supported. In my last post, I discussed how you could write an Authentication Handler in Katana for Hawk (HMAC Authentication). Good news is NancyFx can be run as an OWIN handler, so you can use many of existing middleware services, including the ones that are ship with Katana. Running NancyFx as a OWIN handler is pretty straightforward, and discussed in detail as part of the NancyFx documentation here. After run the steps described there and you have the application working, only a few more steps are required to register the additional middleware services. • ASP.NET Routing not working on IIS 7.0

  I ran into a nasty little problem today when deploying an application using ASP.NET 4.0 Routing to my live server. The application and its Routing were working just fine on my dev machine (Windows 7 and IIS 7.5), but when I deployed (Windows 2008 R1 and IIS 7.0) Routing would just not work. Every time I hit a routed url IIS would just throw up a 404 error: This is an IIS error, not an ASP.NET error so this doesn’t actually come from ASP.NET’s routing engine but from IIS’s handling of expressionless URLs. Note that it’s clearly falling through all the way to the StaticFile handler which is the last handler to fire in the typical IIS handler list. In other words IIS is trying to parse the extension less URL and not firing it into ASP.NET but failing. As I mentioned on my local machine this all worked fine and to make sure local and live setups match I re-copied my Web.config, double checked handler mappings in IIS and re-copied the actual application assemblies to the server. It all looked exactly matched. However no workey on the server with IIS 7.0!!! Finally, totally by chance, I remembered the runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests attribute flag on the modules key in web.config and set it to true: <system.webServer> <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true"> <add name="ScriptCompressionModule" type="Westwind.Web.ScriptCompressionModule,Westwind.Web" /> </modules> </system.webServer> And lo and behold, Routing started working on the live server and IIS 7.0! This seems really obvious now of course, but the really tricky thing about this is that on IIS 7.5 this key is not necessary. So on my Windows 7 machine ASP.NET Routing was working just fine without the key set. However on IIS 7.0 on my live server the same missing setting was not working. On IIS 7.0 this key must be present or Routing will not work. Oddly on IIS 7.5 it appears that you can’t even turn off the behavior – setting runtAllManagedModuleForAllRequests="false" had no effect at all and Routing continued to work just fine even with the flag set to false, which is NOT what I would have expected. Kind of disappointing too that Windows Server 2008 (R1) can’t be upgraded to IIS 7.5. It sure seems like that should have been possible since the OS server core changes in R2 are pretty minor. For the future I really hope Microsoft will allow updating IIS versions without tying them explicitly to the OS. It looks like that with the release of IIS Express Microsoft has taken some steps to untie some of those tight OS links from IIS. Let’s hope that’s the case for the future – it sure is nice to run the same IIS version on dev and live boxes, but upgrading live servers is too big a deal to do just because an updated OS release came out. Moral of the story – never assume that your dev setup will work as is on the live setup. It took me forever to figure this out because I assumed that because my web.config on the local machine was fine and working and I copied all relevant web.config data to the server it can’t be the configuration settings. I was looking everywhere but in the .config file forever before getting desperate and remembering the flag when I accidentally checked the intellisense settings in the modules key.   I'm trying to figure out how to set up my architecture for a socket.io app that will require both https and wss connections. I've found many tutorials on the web suggesting that you use something like stud or stunnel in front of haproxy, which then routes your unencrypted traffic to your app. If I were to go this route, is it suggested that haproxy and the ssl terminator be on separate instances, or is it fine if they are on the same EC2 server instance? If I do not want to use a separate ssl terminator, could I use haproxy to terminate the ssl? Or instead would it be possible to proxy these https and wss connections to my application and have the node app terminate the ssl itself?

I'm automating a build process here at work, and all I'm trying to do is get version numbers and a tiny description of the build which may be multi-line. The system this runs on is OSX 10.6.8. I've seen everything from using CAT to processing each line as necessary. I can't figure out what I should use and why. Attempts read -d '' versionNotes Results in garbled input if the user has to use the backspace key. Also there's no good way to terminate the input as ^D doesn't terminate and ^C just exits the process. read -d 'END' versionNotes Works... but still garbles the input if the backspace key is needed. while read versionNotes do echo " $versionNotes" >> "source/application.yml" done Doesn't properly end the input (because I'm too late to look up matching against an empty string).

So there are these processes that can't be terminated with taskkill - system processes in general. But there also is, for example my Anti Virus program that makes itself "unterminateable".   I want to make an SSH connection to another server with forwarding, but without having to log on to the remote server, nor interfere with the screen I am working on. I also need to access the connection to terminate it when I finish with it. eg. say I want to do a mysql backup on a remote server so I use the command ssh user@remote -L 1234:localhost:3306 but after issuing the password I want to run the mysql command in the session, but be able to access the SSH connection when I finish with mysql and terminate it. Is there some way this can be done?

• C# PrintPreviewDialog Modification possible?

  Currently, what I'm doing is this: Using the built-in .NET PrintPreviewDialog Attaching my own Click handler to the Print button, which allows for the user to select the printer before finally printing. This all WORKS, HOWEVER, the OnprintToolStripButtonClick event is still sending the document to the default printer BEFORE the user gets to choose the actual printer and click Print (which works, but they're getting an extra copy on the default printer first from the old Handler). Can I remove this built-in Click handler? I've tried the other methods mentioned on here in regards to using an EventHandlerList to remove the handlers, but it doesn't work for the built-in printing event.
