• Focusing on Mobile @ Oracle OpenWorld

  Plenty of exciting trends in the industry today: Cloud, Big Data, Mobile, etc. The first two are amazing of course, but for me, it's mobile, mobile and... MOBILE.   Why? Think back to the mozilla browser (Marc Andreessen's mozilla, not today's mozilla.org), Netscape and the nascent beginnings of the World Wide Web. Amazing times. Companies were just starting to set up their home pages, basic HTML, hyperlinks, images, ooooh, aaaah.  Yahoo! was *the* search engine back then. :-\   Anywhoo, I would pose that mobile today, we are in a similar junction. Sure, there's millions of apps on Apple's App Store and Google Play, but within the enterprise, it's just getting started. I'm talking about going beyond the simple, tactical apps such as calendaring, contacts or directory service lookup. And while mobile first a common mantra, I'm referring to mobile plus which includes and looks upon the whole enterprise holistically and adds new parameters, such as your GPS location, perhaps even your vital signs. (Apple's health kit?)  Everything is going mobile. Everything connected. But with the enterprise - scalability, security, integration, app management, user management, etc. Amazing times ahead. Ok, got that off my mind. Oracle OpenWorld 2014 - Going Mobile!  If you're coming to the big dance, I've highlighted some key mobile sessions below. And if you see me around, and there's a bar within reach, high five me for a beer. • Is the difference between BDD and TDD nothing more than a vocabulary shift?

  Hello, I recently made a start on learning BDD (Behaviour Driven Development) after watching a Google tech talk presented by David Astels. He made a very interesting case for using BDD and some of the literature I've read seem to highlight that it's easier to sell BDD to management. Admittedly, I'm a little skeptical about BDD after watching the above video. So, I'm interested to understand if BDD is indeed nothing more than a change in vocabulary or if it offers other benefits.

• Ubuntu 10.04 Cant Adjust brightness on my lenevo Thinkpad?

  I cant seem to be able to adjust the brightness on my think-pad laptop running Ubuntu 10.04. In the power management applet it shows that the power is set to 100%, but even if i try to lower it the actual screen brightness dosent change. Any ideas of how I can get around this? I tried changing the brightness from the terminal but its already set to Max brightness (however the actual screen brightness is no that bright at all). Thanks

• If I release a program under GPL, do I have to continue to do so?

  Consider this scenario: I am developing a program FooSuite that uses a GPL-licenced library QuuxTools I release the program FooSuite 1.0 under GPL Later on I discover that, for some reason, I need to licence the program to someone on different terms. Hence: I remove the dependency on GPL via QuuxTools, by either... rewriting the program not to use this library any longer obtaining a different licence for QuuxTools (if it's dual-licenced; see PyQt) I release FooSuite 1.1 under a non-GPL licence. However, FooSuite 1.1 is still a derivative work from FooSuite 1.0. I understand that it's not legal for a stranger to do what I did, but am I myself - as the owner of FooSuite - free from this restriction?

• Is it possible to auto-arrange the active Unity launcher icons?

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 x64 bit as default DE. I was guessing it is possible to Auto Arrange the Current-Active applications in Unity Launcher panel to align in Lastly-Opened or Firstly-Opened in ascending or descending order, irrespective of their locked positions in the Unity Launcher panel. Just to get rid of Scrolling down the launcher panel every time to search active application thereby depriving the need of Alt-Tab shortcut. I mean Alt-Tab alternative in more smarter way, though I also use Alt-Tab for the task Management purpose.

You had to sysprep the VM, and clone the data disks. This was slow, prone to errors, and stopped you from being productive. No more! A new option, called Capture, allows you to easily select a VM, running or not. The capture will copy the OS disk and data disks and create a new image out of it automatically for you. This means you can now easily clone an entire VM without affecting productivity.  To capture a VM, simply browse to your Virtual Machines in the Microsoft Azure management website, select the VM you want to clone, and click on the Capture button at the bottom. A window will come up asking to name your image. It took less than 1 minute for me to build a clone of my server. And because it is stored as an image, I can easily create a new VM with it. So that’s what I did… And that took about 5 minutes total.  That’s amazing…  To create a new VM from your image, click on the NEW icon (bottom left), select Compute/Virtual Machine/From Gallery, and select My Images from the left menu when selecting an Image. You will find your newly created image. Because this is a clone, you will not be prompted for a new login; the user id/password is the same.   I tried to follow the instructions on the opera page, but it didn't work. I was assuming the base install should be the same for 64-bit, but it doesn't look so. After executing wget -qO - http://deb.opera.com/archive.key | sudo apt-key add - successfully sudo apt-get install opera says Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package opera is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package 'opera' has no installation candidate Below on the page I see A 64 bit Linux version is available, you should get it automatically either from the repositories or from Opera I haven't tried to download it manually, since I prefer to get it from a repo. It it possible?

• How to package a file into .deb?

  I'm trying to a make a simple .deb package, which would basically edit a config of another package I listed as a dependency. I added the required manipulations to the postinstall file. The problem is I can't find a way to package an example config, which should be copied and edited from the postinstall script. At the moment I just have a folder with the sample config, of which I'm creating a tar.gz and orig.tar.gz, then dh_make in that folder, edit the generated files and run debuild. However if I open the resulting .deb file with an archive manager, I can see that the sample file was not included at all.

• Plan variable and call dependencies

  I'd like to write down the design of my program to understand the dependencies and calls better. I know there are class diagrams which show inheritance and attribute variables. However I'd also like to document the input parameters to method functions and in particular which calls the methods function executes inside (e.g. on the input parameters). Also sometimes it might be useful to show how actual objects are connected (if there is a standard structure). This way I can have a better understanding of the modules and design before starting to program. Can you suggest a method to do this software design? It should be one-to-one to programming code structure so that I really notice all quirks beforehand (instead of high-level design where thing are hard to implement without further work). Maybe some special diagram or tool or a combination? It is static dependency and call design rather than time dependent execution monitoring. (I use Python if you have any specialized recommendations).

• Java EE 6 and Maven 3 using CLI

  NetBeans and Eclipse provide tools, templates, wizards and code generators for building a Java EE 6 application. They both also allow a Java EE 6 Maven project to be created. In his recent screencast, Adam Bien explained how a Java EE 6 project can be easily created at command-line using Maven 3. The screencast walks through the process of creating the project using command-line.
