• Log and debug/decrypt an windows application's HTTPS traffic

  I've got a proprietary windows-only application that uses HTTPS to speak with a (also proprietary, undocumented) web service. To ultimately be able to use the web service's functionality on my linux machines, I want to reverse-engineer the web service API by analyzing the requests sent by the application. Now the question: How can I decrypt and log the HTTPS traffic? I know of several solutions which don't apply in my case: Fiddler is a man-in-the-middle HTTPS proxy which I cannot use since the application doesn't support proxies. Also, I do not (yet) know if it works with self-signed server certificates, which I doubt. Wireshark is able to decrypt SSL streams if you have the server's private certificate, which I don't have. any browser extension since the application is not a browser If I remember correctly, there have been some trojans that capture online banking information by hooking into/replacing the window's crypto API. Since the machine is mine, low level changes are possible. Maybe there is a non-trojan (white-hat) network log application out there which does the same? There is a blackhat presentation with some details available to read. They refer to Microsoft Research Detour for easy API hooking.

  I'm looking for an industrial strength cloud file storage system. It will be used by multiple people in a startup. Our requirements: Transparent file system access: files and folders in the file system must be able transparently access (read and write) files in the cloud; files must be synchronized whenever network access is available and buffered otherwise. The system must be usable by non-technical people. Access control: we need to control who can access which files, at least on a very coarse basis. e.g., the developers will be able to access the system design documents, only the corporate folks can access recruiting documents, and only management can access certain corporate documents. Dropbox provides this via Sharing folders, but that's not adequate, if I understand it correctly, because there's no authentication of the sharing user. so the cloud service should have a notion of an account (our startup) with multiple users with distinct credentials and rights for each user Clients: it must be accessible from Macs and PCs; I would hope that it supports Linux (e.g., Ubuntu) too Security: it must provide robust security Backup: the cloud service must reliably backup the files Versioning: change version history, is a big plus, but not required Not free: we're willing to pay for the service So far, we've reviewed the following, albeit not completely thoroughly: Dropbox: has all except 1) Access control, which is provided via Sharing folders, but that's not adequate, if I understand it correctly, because there's no authentication of the sharing user. and 2) Security, as discussed here http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2011/05/internet_security and here http://blog.dropbox.com/?p=821. • How to have LiveJournal delegate my OpenID to something else?

  I understand that if I have full control over my domain, I can set it up so that I can delegate the task of authenticating to another OpenID service provider. The problem is, what I'd like to do is to get the LiveJournal server to pass the authentication to someone else, instead of having LJ doing it. Preferably what I'd like to do is get LiveJournal, when asked by a web site, say, "No, I don't do it anymore -- go to this address". The plan was that this address would then be in a domain I fully control, which then would pass it on to whichever service provider I choose. I don't even know if I've gotten my understanding of OpenID right, if all this shenanigans are necessary, if my question makes sense, or if it's even possible with a service provider like Livejournal. ETA: Doing a little more reading up, and examining the source for my LiveJournal user page, I note that this particular line in the file's <header> area: <link rel="openid.server" href="http://www.livejournal.com/openid/server.bml" /> I suspect that changing this will allow me to forward OpenID requests to whomever I wish, I think; so far so good. Now comes the hard part -- figuring out how to change all of that using LiveJournal's customization options, if that is at all possible (here's hoping I don't need to pay to get that functionality).

• Why is cron mailing me program output even though I've redirected to /dev/null?

  I'm trying to restart a system process through cron and getting emailed the startup output of the process. I thought redirecting STDOUT and SDTERR to /dev/null would "silence" the output but alas, this has not work. • Windows Server 2012 licensing issue preventing RDP connections?

  I am witnessing an unusual behaviour on 1 of 5 Windows Server 2012 R2 machines (clean install) that is preventing any remote connections from being established via RDP. I have run through the prerequisites for RDP here but I am finding that any remote connection attempt instantly stops the "Windows Protection Service". When I check the event logs I see the following entry. The Software Protection Service has stopped Event ID: 903 Source: Security-SPP From what I have read Security-SPP is tasked with enforcing activation and licensing, it appears that RDP requires this service to be in the running state. Is it possible that I have inadvertently activated this instance of Windows with a key that has already been associated to another instance (We have 5 keys as part of an MSDN subscription)? Would this be sufficient to block RDP access? When I look under System Properties (Windows Activation) it states that Windows is activated and there are no other obvious indicators that there's a licensing issue. EDIT 1: I ran a Powershell script to display the product keys for all servers in order to check for any duplication. For the problematic server I am getting the message The RPC server is unavailable.

• One Windows Domain workstation can ping gateway but gets no internet access

  One of the (Windows XP SP3) workstations of our Windows Domain could not access internet anymore, this problem suddenly happened overnight. The domain controllers (there are three of them) are all running Windows Server 2008. First I compared the output of ipconfig /all on the faulty workstation with the output of a working workstation and it was just fine as it had always been. In particular the default gateway was correct and always remained pingable from the faulty workstation. I guessed that something was wrong with the DHCP service and I restarted the DHCP server service on all of our three DCs as well as the DHCP client service on the faulty workstation. This didn't solve the issue. I then thought of renewing the DHCP lease with ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew and here is my first question: why did this never work? The same IP address (192.168.0.45) kept being assigned despite all my attempts to renew it (note that all our workstation are getting their TCP/IP automatically.) Even by leaving the domain and changing the computer name the same address was yet again obtained... Anyway I then proceeded to switch the TCP/IP configuration for that machine manually to another free valid IP address (192.168.0.41)... and then the internet access came back! I then cleared any traces of the previous IP in the DHCP leases list and in the DNS tables of our DCs and, after setting back the TCP/IP configuration to 'automatic', finally, the new lease would be granted (192.168.0.41) alongside with the internet access. My second question: what went suddenly wrong with the original IP address?

• Active Directory FRS problems. 13508 error and other problems

  I have 3 Domain Controllers. We will call them DC1, DC2 and DC3. DC3 and DC2 show Event ID 13508 in their FRS logs with no follow-up event(13509 I think) to say the error had been fixed. DC1's FRS log no matter what you do never shows any events besides FRS service stopped and started. DC1 holds the SYSVOL that needs to be replicated to the other DC's. The other DC's sysvol folders are empty. I have tried the burflag method of fixing this but I haven't had any luck. My procedure for that was to stop all FRS services on all DC's. Then set the burflag on DC1 to D4 and the other two DCs burflag to D2. Started FRS on DC1 and the only event's I see in DC1's FRS event logs are service stopped and service started messages. This fact is leading me to believe that something is wrong on FRS for DC1. I believe there should be events 13553 and 13516 in the FRS event logs after an authoritative sysvol restore. The other two DC's do not have anything in their SYSVOL, otherwise I would have made one of them the authoritative sysvol. DC1 is MS Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2 DC2 is MS Server 2003 Standard Edition SP1 DC3 is MS Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition SP2 I did not setup this domain originally but I am now the administrator of it, so I don't have a lot of background on why certain things may have been done in the past. My main goal is to try and fix these issues to get myself better prepared to decommision DC1 and add a DC running Server 2008 to my domain. Thanks.

• Dovecot starting and running, but not listening on any port

  Among others things I'm in charge of a Debian GNU/Linux (Wheezy) DomU for the mail services of the company i work for. Yesterday one HDD that was used for this particular server has died. After installing Debian again, Dovecot decided to no longer listen on any ports (checked with netstat -l). • linux networking: how to redirect incoming connections from old server to new server?

  hi I'm in the process of moving my old server to a new server, but i will keep the old server running for database replication and load balancing, etc. each server has a separate internet connection with a static ip, and they are connected through a local Ethernet connection. I've got Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit running on old server and Debian 6.0 64-bit on new one. shorewall firewall is installed on both servers. there are some outdoor devices which are periodically sending data to port 43597 for old server IP address. I can run multiple instances of the network service which is responsible for receiving data from devices on a server but on different ports. here's the question: how can I run the service on new server and have connections coming to old server redirected to it, and new devices can still connect to new server's IP address preferably on the same port and same service? until all devices get updated to send to new server. I've tried a shorewall DNAT rule, but seems like new server's default route should be changed to ethernet connection, which breaks other things. I also found about redir utility, but still haven't tried it. is there any best practice or simple solution for such a scenario, i'm not aware of? thanks in advance.

• Nagios send mail when server is down

  I am using nagios 3.06 to monitor the servers. When a service is critical, it sends a mail, but when a server is down no mail is sent. Even if all the services go to critical state, no mail is sent. • Reverse web proxy with time constraints

  I have a web application which produces several unique URLs of the type http://service.company.com/service.html?type=aaaa&key=jfiZm6u6cW where the last part is a randomly generated key. Each such URL provides access to an instance of the service provided. I am looking for a way to restrict access to those URLs based on time constraints, as an example URL#1 should be available between 8:00AM and 10:00AM on May 30, URL#2 should be available between 10:30AM and 12:00PM on May 31, and so on. I already have a resource scheduling application based on Drupal and would like to find a way to include those URLs as scheduled resources. The web application is deployed on Apache Tomcat, so I don't have the knowledge or the resources to alter it, therefore I thought that I could put some sort of reverse proxy in front of the web app that could implement the time constraint feature. In my thoughts the reverse proxy would allow or disallow access to each URL based on the rules that my scheduling application would provide. There may be other ways to deliver such a solution, but I can't think of anything better, so the question is: is there a reverse web proxy architecture that could allow access to the destination URLs based on time and date rules? Any other ideas are more than welcome.

  I have a host that acts as a gateway for other hosts. The configuration is such that eth0(192.168.1.3) is connected to internet via a router and eth1(172.16.2.50) is connected to internal network via switch. Given that, this host is also running a service that is bound to eth1 and serves the internal network. I want to extend this service to the outside world as well and was trying to manipulate iptables so that any request that comes to this host via eth0 and is directed to 192.168.1.3:80 is send to 172.16.2.50 and internet users can also make use of the service. • How do I get to the bottom of network latency and bandwidth issues

  I recently moved two blocks south. That move moved me from Comcast to Broadstripe (high-speed internet cable providers). Comcast was pretty good. Broadstripe sucks. I called them on the phone, and they basically brushed me off (politely). I want to come to them with some numbers, so I can say more than just "it's really slow". I still have access to my old Comcast service, so I can run the tests using both providers. Here's what I'm seeing with my new Broadstripe service: 1) When I browse to most sites, there is a long delay (5-10 seconds) before the page starts loading in my browser 2) The speed test tell me I have 12 megs down (bullshit) 3) I have a server at my office. I just downloaded some files (using scp on the command line). It said I'm getting 3.5 KB/s I'm an experienced programmer and spend most of my days on the command line and in vim. Networking, however is not a strong point. I've played around with traceroute, but I'm not sure if that's the right tool to use. I have access to servers all over the country (I would just use Amazon EC2 to set up a test server), and I prefer to use Ubuntu for my testing. How can I come up with some hard numbers to show Broadstripe how crappy their service is?

  I accidentally deleted my Dell xps 14 touch pad disabling driver and I don't know where to find it and reinstall it. I have already tried Dell support and without luck (I don't want to install something that I don't know). Would anyone please send me the link to that driver To clarify: There is this Fn shortcut key used to disable/enable touch pad in Dell xps14 and when press it orange light on touch pad will lit and touch pad will stop working. But after deleting the driver that responsible for that function,it stopped working. My service center is almost 600 miles away and he said that he forgot to add it last time he fix my laptop. Since the internet connection at his place is slow,he can't send me from mail either.So can anyone send me the link for that driver. Since I don't really know about drivers it would be really nice if some one show me the driver name or link. Sorry,here is my laptop service tag "C37KWL1".I don't know how to find the specific driver for that function key.My dell has a short cut for disabling touchpad with picture on it along with the other multimedia short cut key with picture. since xps 15 and 17 have seperated touch key instead of on function keys mine have to choose function key or multimedia key through setting.To be honest my service center tech guy forgot to install it when he repair it and can't send me the file(which is about over 20mb or something according to him)for some reason.All i need is that particular file.

• Automatically reconnect to VPN when it drops

  I use OpenVPN to connect to a VPN service. I will often use it unattended and on occasion I have come back to find the service disconnected and GUI asking for login credentials. If the connection is disconnected by the service, and not me, I'd like it to attempt to reconnect automatically with no intervention from me, and ideally, if the reconnection attempt initially fails, keep attempting to do so at regular intervals until a connection is successfully. Is there anyway to configure OpenVPN to do this? If not, can someone suggest a way of doing it with scripting (I use Windows)? Failing that, can anyone suggest a VPN solution that does this? The VPN provider supports PPTP as well as OpenVPN. I have configured OpenVPN to read login credentials from a file. Below is my config script.   I am using common-HttpClient ver 3.1. All my requests are having correct (default) Http version in the request line i.e Http/1.1 except fot 1 request. Following Post request gets the requestline as Http/0.9 server : port/cas/v1/tickets/TGT-1-sUqenNbqUzvkGSWW25lcbaJc0OEcJ6wg5DOj3XDMSwoIBf6s7i-cas-1 Body: service=* I debugged through the httpclient code and saw the requestline is set to http/1.1 but on the server i see the request coming as http/0.9. i tried to set the http version explicitly using the HttpMethodParams but does not help. Does someone has any idea what could be wrong? It isn’t required to stream all shows, only shows that require the AC3 audio codec. Click Yes to allow Remote Potato to add rules to the Windows Firewall for remote access. You’ll likely need to accept a few UAC prompts. When notified that the rules were added, click OK. Remote Potato will then prompt you to allow administrator privileges to reserve a URL for it’s web server. Click Yes. Remote Potato server will start. Click on the configuration button at the right to to reveal the settings tabs.   One the General tab, you’ll have the option to run Remote Potato on startup and minimized in the System Tray. If you’re running Media Center on a dedicated HTPC, you’ll probably want to enable both startup options. Forwarding Ports on Your Router You’ll need to forward a couple ports on your router. By default, these will be ports 9080 and 9081. In this example we’re using a Linksys WRT54GL router, however, the steps for port forwarding will vary from router to router. On the Linksys configuration page, click on the Applications & Gaming Tab, and then the Port Range Forward tab. Under Application, type in a name of your choosing. In both the Start and End boxes, type the port number 9080. Enter the local IP address of your Media Center computer in the IP address column. Click the check box under Enable. Repeat the process on the next line, but this time use port 9081. When finished, click the Save Settings button. Note: It’s highly recommended that you configure the home computer running Media Center & Remote Potato with a static IP address.   Find your IP Address You’ll need to find the IP address assigned to your router from your ISP. There are many ways to do this but a quick and easy way is to visit a site like checkip.dyndns.org (link available below) The current external IP address of your router will be displayed in the browser.   Dynamic DNS This is an optional step, but  it’s highly recommended. Many routers, such as the Linksys WRT54GL we are using, support Dynamic DNS (DDNS). What Dynamic DNS allows you to do is affiliate your home router’s external IP address to a domain name. Every time your home router is assigned a a new IP address by your ISP, the domain name is updated to point to your new IP address. Remote Potato’s user interface is accessed over the Internet is by connecting to your router’s IP address followed by a colon and the port number. (Ex: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:9080) Instead of constantly having to look up and remember an IP address, you can use DDNS along with a 3rd party provider like DynDNS.com, to sign up for a free domain name and configure it to be updated each time your router is assigned a new IP address. Go to the DynDNS.com website (See link at the end of the article) and sign up for a free Domain name. You’ll need to register and confirm by email.   Once you’ve signed in and selected your domain name click Activate Services. You’ll get a confirmation message that your domain name has been activated.    On the Linksys WRT54GL click on the Setup tab an then DDNS. Select DynDNS.org, or TZO.com if you prefer to use their service, from the drop down list.   With DynDNS, you’ll need to fill in your username and password you signed up with at the DynDNS website and the hostname you chose. Note: You can connect over your local network with the IP Address of the computer running Remote Potato followed by a colon and the port number. Ex: 192.168.1.2:9080 Logging in Remote Potato and Recording a Show Once you connect, you’ll see the start page. To view the TV listings, click on TV Guide. You’ll then see your guide listings. There are a few ways to navigate the listings. At the top left, you can click on any of the preset time buttons to jump to  the listings at that time of the day.  Click on the arrows to the right and left of the day and date at the top center to proceed to the previous or next day. Or, jump to a specific day with the date and date buttons at the top right.   To setup a recording, click on a program.   You can choose to record the individual show or the entire series by clicking on Record Show or Record Series.   Remote Potato on Mobile Devices Perhaps the coolest feature of Remote Potato is the ability to schedule recording from your phone or mobile device. Note: For any devices or computers without Silverlight, you will be prompted to view the HTML page. Select Browse Listings. Select your program to record. In the Program Details, select Record Show to record the single episode or Record Series to record all instances of the series. You will then see a red dot on the program listing to indicate that the show is scheduled for recording.   Streaming Recorded TV Click on Recorded TV from the home screen to access your previously recorded TV programs. Click on the selection you wish to stream. Click on Play. If you receive this error message, you’ll need to install the streaming pack for Remote Potato. This is found on the same download page as installation files. (See link below) The Begin from slider allows you to start playback from the start (by default) or a different time of the program by moving the slider. The Quality (bitrate) setting  allows you to choose the quality of the playback. We found the video quality on the Normal setting to be pretty lousy, and Low was just pointless. High was the best overall viewing experience as it provided smooth quality video playback. We experienced significant stuttering during playback using the Ultra High setting.   Click Start when you are ready to begin. When playback begins you’ll see a slider at the top right.   Move the slider left or right to increase or decrease the size of the video. There’s also a button to switch to full screen.   Media Center users who travel frequently or are always on the go will likely find Remote Potato to be a blessing. Since being released earlier this year, updates for Remote Potato have come fast and furious. The latest beta release includes support for streaming music and photos.
