• Please help! request compression

  Hi, I wrote an IHttpModule that compress my respone using gzip (I return a lot of data) in order to reduce response size. It is working great as long as the web service doesn't throws an exception. In case exception is thrown, the exception gzipped but the Content-encoding header is disappear and the client doesn't know to read the exception. How can I solve this? Why the header is missing? I need to get the exception in the client. • Using nginx's proxy_redirect when the response location's domain varies

  I am making an web app using SoundCloud's API. Requesting an MP3 to stream involves two requests. I'll give an example. Firstly: http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/59815100/stream This returns a 302 with a temporary link to the actual MP3 (which varies each time), for example: http://ec-media.soundcloud.com/xYZk0lr2TeQf.128.mp3?ff61182e3c2ecefa438cd02102d0e385713f0c1faf3b0339595667fd0907ea1074840971e6330e82d1d6e15dd660317b237a59b15dd687c7c4215ca64124f80381e8bb3cb5&AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJ4IAZE5EOI7PA7VQ&Expires=1347621419&Signature=Usd%2BqsuO9wGyn5%2BrFjIQDSrZVRY%3D The issue I had was that I am attempting to load the MP3 via JavaScript's XMLHTTPRequest, and for security reasons the browser can't follow the 302, as ec-media.soundcloud.com does not set a header saying it is safe for the browser to access via XMLHTTPRequest. This works! However, I have hit a snag. Sometimes the 302 location is not ec-media.soundcloud.com, it's ak-media.soundcloud.com. There are possibly even more servers out there and presumably more could appear at any time. Is there any way I can handle an arbitrary 302 location without having to manually enter each possible variation? Or is it possible for nginx to handle the redirect and return the response of the second step? So myserver/soundcloud/tracks/59815100 follows the 302 behind the scenes and returns the MP3? The browser automatically follows the redirect, so I can't do anything with the initial response on the client side. I am new to nginx and in a bit over my head so apologies if I've missed something obvious, or it's beyond the scope of nginx. Thanks a lot for reading.

• Base64 en/decoding between xstream and iPhone SDK

  I am passing a byte array from a java server to an iPad client in XML. The server is using xstream to convert the byte array to XML with the EncodedByteArrayConverter, which should convert the array to Base 64. Using xstream, I can decode the xml back to the proper byte array in a java client, but in the iPad client, I'm getting an invalid length error. To do my decoding, I'm using the code at the bottom of this page. The length of the string is indeed not a multiple of 4, so there must be something strange with my string - although since xstream can decode it just fine, I'm guessing there's just something I need to to on the iPad side to get it to decode. I've tried cutting off padding at the end of the string to get it down to the right size, and that does allow the decoder to work, but I end up with JPG's that have invalid headers, and are not displayable. • How to get better video quality in Lync?

  I want to use a ConferenceCam from Logitech to stream talks live via Lync. When I view the RAW webcam image via VLC, the quality is very good (but the latency is high because of buffering). However, when I stream it using Lync, the video gets blurry. Is there a way to ensure QoS in Lync or otherwise improve the video quality to (near-)native? I would rather have some dropped frames than a lower resolution where I can't read the slides. In my setup, I use Lync with an Office365-E3 contract, so I have no Lync-Server in my network. I thought about replacing Lync completely with VLC, but I first want to try Lync because VLC will probably cause firewall issues. Also, I haven't looked up the VLC parameters for less buffering, faster encoding, a bit lower resolution (natively it's more than HD) and streaming.

Why .NET is unable to determine the address of client? • MySQL query (over SSL) fails in IIS 7 using default AppPool identity

  I am trying to run a website locally in Windows 7 under IIS 7. I have the AppPool configured to use "Classic" mode, but connecting to a MySQL DB that requires SSL fails. If I change the identity to my user account it works perfectly. It fails when using the default "ApplicationPoolIdentity" account. Is there something I'm missing somewhere? Why would running a MySQL query over SSL fail for certain user accounts? Update: This is the exception that the MySQL Connector is throwing: "Reading from the stream has failed. Attempted to read past the end of the stream."

• Would OpenID or OAuth work for authorization/authentication on a distributed web service?

  We're in the early stages of designing a RESTful/resource-oriented web service API for a computational lingustics application. Because many of the resources we plan to serve are rights-encumbered, a key design decision has been to specify the platform so that each resource provider can expose their own web service that complies with the API spec. This way, the rights owner maintains control over their content (and thus the ability to throttle or deny access at will) and a direct relationship with the consumer, while still being able to participate in in the collaborative network. At the same time, to simplify the job of writing a client for this service, we want to allow a client access to the distributed service through one end-point, with the server handling content negotiation and retrieval from the appropriate providers. Right now, we're at an impasse on authentication/authorization schemes. One of our number has argued for the (technical) simplicity of a central authentication registry, but others are concerned about the organizational complexity of such a scheme. It seems to me, based on an albeit limited understanding of the technologies, that a combination of OpenID and OAuth would do the trick, with a client authenticating with the end-point via OpenID, and the server taking action on the user's behalf with the various content providers using OAuth. I've only ever seen implementations (e.g. stackoverflow, twitter, etc.) where a human was present to intervene, and I still need to do more research on these technologies. Would a scheme like this work for an automated web service, or would it make the client too difficult to implement and operate?

• mysql.sock file missing after installing MySQL on Snow Leopard

  This is a recent problem... MySQL was working and a couple of days ago I must have done something. I deleted MySQL and tried reinstalling using the .dmg file. The mysql.sock file never gets created and I get the following error messages: Hristo$ mysql Enter password: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) I also tried stopping Apache and installing but Apache gave me an error... I don't know if this is good or bad: Hristo$ sudo apachectl stop launchctl: Error unloading: org.apache.httpd I tried the MacPorts installation as well but the socket file still didn't get created. I don't really know what to do and I don't want to reinstall Snow Leopard and start from scratch :/ I also tried installing the 32-bit version and same deal. No luck. Any ideas? Thanks, Hristo

Here are the different parts of the game : -a client/server communication to play on the internet -peer to peer on local network. I would like to know which technology you would use on these parts (wcf on both, socket on both, wcf on one and socket on the other...) and why, if possible. • Source Control - XCode - Visual Studio 2005/2008 / 2010

  My apologies if this has been asked before, I wasnt quite sure if this question should be asked on a programming forum, as it more relates to programming environment than a particular technology, so please accept my (double) appologies if I am posting this in the wrong place, my logic in this case was if it effects the code I write, then this is the place for it. At home, I do a lot of my development on a Mac Pro, I do development for the Mac, iPhone and Windows on this machine (Xcode & Visual Studio - (multiple versions installed in bootcamp, but generally I run it via Parallels)). When visiting a client, I have a similar setup, but on my MacBook Pro. What I want is a source control solution to install on the Mac Pro, that will support both XCode and multiple versions of visual studio, so that when I visit a client, I can simply grab the latest copy from source control via the MacBook Pro. Whilst visiting the client, he / she may suggest changes, and minor ones I would tend to make on site, so I need the ability to merge any modified code back into the trunk of the project / solution when I return home. At the moment, I am using no source control at all, and rely on simply coping folders and overwriting them when I return from a client- thats my 'merge'!!! I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of a source provider I could use, which would support both Windows and Mac development environments, and is cheap (free would be better).

• Refactor java code

  I would like to refactor code which looks something like this: String input; // input from client socket. if (input.equals(x) { doX(); } else if (input.equals(y) { doY(); } else { unknown_command(); } It is code which checks input from socket to perform some action, but I don't like the if else construction because every time a new command is added to the server (code) a new if else has to be added which is ugly. Also when deleting a command the if else has to be modified.

• Silverlight, WCF service, integrated security AND ssl/https not possible?

  I have this setup that works perfectly when using http. A silverlight 3 client .net 4 WCF service hosted in IIS with basicHttpBinding and using integrated security on the site When setting https to required on the website the setup stops working. Using the wcftestclient on the uri I get the message: The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Anonymous'. The authentication header received from the server was 'Negotiate,NTLM'. The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized. Maybe this makes sense because the wcftestclient does not pass credentials? in the web.config the security mode for the service binding is set is set to 'Transport'. The silverlight client is created like this: BasicHttpBinding basicHttpBinding = new BasicHttpBinding(); basicHttpBinding.Security.Mode = BasicHttpSecurityMode.Transport; var serviceClient = new ImportServiceClient(basicHttpBinding, serviceAddress); The service address is ofcourse starting with https:// And the silverlight client reports this error: The provided URI scheme 'https' is invalid; expected 'http'. Parameter name: via Remember, swithing it back to http (and setting security mode to 'TransportCredentialOnly' makes everything working again. Is the setup I want even supported? If so, how should it be configured?

• Anybody seen this behavior with Sql Server Reporting Services, a 64bit OS and an Oracle datasource?

  I'm working on a Sql Server Reporting Services solution that queries across both a Sql Server data source and an Oracle 10g data source. My dev box is Windows 7 64bit with Sql Server 2008R2 and I'm hosting IIS7 and SSRS on that system for development; using VS.NET for designing the reports. I have been having errors when running the report where SSRS complains about loading the 32 bit Oracle client in a 64bit process. There a number of threads out there about how to solve that. The thing is, they all come down to making sure you have the 64bit Oracle, client which I do. The weird chain of events I have goes like this: Create initial Oracle datasource and wire up report (it works) Edit Oracle datasource connection (it stops working with BadImageFormatException 32bit/64bit error message) uninstall and reinstall Oracle client (it works) Edit Oracle connection again (it stops working with BadImageFormatException 32bit/64bit error message) So short of reinstalling the client every time I change the connection string I am at a complete loss. Has anybody seen this sort of behavior? And if so what the heck am I doing wrong?

  I am streaming videos in my house via Windows Media Player Streaming, which is basically DLNA. So theoretically any DLNA compliant device can pick up the stream. However, I've quickly found that this is only one part of the solution. Over the years I've accumulated a ton of video-capable devices. While all these devices can see the Windows Media Player stream, they all speak in different codecs. And frankly, I am confused by codecs. In the beginning, I thought that the codecs were defined by the filename extension they carried (e.g. avi, mp4, wmv, etc...), but after further research, it looks like the extensions are simply containers. Inside an .avi file could reside several different codecs. So my question is this: is there a format/codec that plays equally well on any device.

• Why is Windows Update trying to install an update I don't need?

  I have a Windows 7 system that currently has a single update pending: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems If I try to install the update, Windows Update will: Create a restore point Fail with the error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an error. The event log for the event reads: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. If you search the web for that error, there are many other people with the exact same issue. Sadly, I am unable to apply the proposed solutions to my case, because I just installed this system. There is nothing on it, except Windows 7. I installed the system and ran through the updates. I also did the exact same process with this machine several times over the past few days due to a long-term test we just started. I didn't have any problems with any Windows Update on the previous installation runs and I know I didn't do anything different this time because I followed the installation procedures instructions which are to be used during the test. How did this happen and how do I solve it? Further Investigation So, as I always like to do, I ran the update again while running Process Monitor and dug up further details. WindowsUpdate.log First of all, there is a Windows Update log file located at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log which I didn't know about.   Hi! Hope somebody can help me, since I've been stuck for a while with this... I switched to another task, but now back to the fight I still can't figure out how to come out from the black hole xD The thing is as follows: Let's say I've got a product model, and then a set of Clients which have rights to submit data for the products they've been subscribed (Many to Many from Client to Product). Whenever my client is going to submit data, I need to create as many forms as products he's subscribed, and pre-populate each one of them with the "product" field as long as perform a quite simple validation (some optional fields have to be completed if it's client's first submission). I would like one form "step" for each product submission, so I've tried formWizards... but the problem is you can't pre-assign values to the forms... this can be solved afterwards when submitting, though... but not the problem that it doesn't allow validation either, so at the end of each step I can check some data before rendering next step. Then I've tried model formsets, but then there's no way to pre-populate the needed fields. I came across some django plugins, but I'm not confident yet if any of them will make it.... Did anybody has a similar problem so he can give me a ray of light? • Git-svn branch hoses dcommit when using an odd branch structure

  I had a boss, past-tense, who decided to put svn branches in the same folder as trunk. Normally, this wouldn't affect me that much but since I'm using git-svn things are going so well. After I did a fetch it created a folder for each branch in my root folder so I have three folders, drupal, trunk, and client. The drupal folder is git's master branch, client and trunk are the svn branches. Merging and committing works great, in fact everything git related is working superb. However dcommit is totally hosed, it's trying to commit a folder called client and one called trunk. I can't even imagine what havoc this would cause for svn later on. So my question is, what have I done wrong in my .git/config and is there anything I can do to fix this or am I going to have to suffer and go back to using svn? Please don't make me go back. I don't think I can take it anymore. Bastard boss knows how to leave a legacy. But I dont want to pass the sender into a listener, so the only way I can think of is containing the sender in a class that implements the listener, hence the above resulting Client implementation. Is there a way to achive this without the use of 'this' in the constructor? It feels bizare and i dont like it, since i am passing myself to an object(MessageReceiver) before I am fully constructed. On the other hand, the MessageReceiver is not passed from outside, it is constructed inside, but does this 'purifies' the bizarre pattern? I am seeking for an alternative or an assurance of some kind that this is safe, or situations on which it might backfire on me.

  I need to know a couple of things, concerning IRC servers that I couldnt directly find out over google (or werent clear enough for me to be sure if it actually works) I'm working at a larger community site, and wanted to deliver an in-page chat. Since it would be a nice feature to let people access it from outside too, over their own clients, I tought implementing an IRC Server would be the best solution (probably dedicated, I'll have to teach myself a couple of things for that) I plan to include a Web-based IRC client over an APE Client / Server. The problem is, I want to strip down the user rights, to disallow many functionalities that IRC would offer: Change of nicknames: The user logs in over the Page login, and I'll automatically create an IRC auth for this user with that password. So basically, he would connect to the IRC client over a button. And after connecting, he shouldnt be able to change his nickname at all Creating channels: I want the possibility to create channels, but not from 'normal' users. Basically, I would prefer to set up basic channels that are public, and if a user really creates an own channel, that one should be private and via invitation (is that possible?) Private conversations: private conversations should be filtered out from the allaround IRC client, into separate 'in-browser-windows' that I create over JS. I guess I just have to filter the stuff coming from IRC - or is there a better solution to that? Only 'registered' users have access: Like I said, if someone registers on the page, I would like to create an IRC 'account' for him. Users that arent registered on the page, cant access the IRC server at all (or get thrown out). Mainly to avoid spammers or bots from outside. Is this stuff solvable over IRC? I've read some FAQ's and Instructions for IRC OP's and servers, but I couldnt find a clear answer - it seems that everyone can do pretty much everything - I would like to configure it in a way that user possibilities are more cut down. Basically, giving users the possibility to chat, but not more. So the Question basically is, how possible / solvable this issues are allaround, or if I have to find other solutions for this.

  Is there anything else that the code must do to sanitize identifiers (table, view, column) other than to wrap them in double quotation marks and "double up" and double quotation marks present in the identifier name? References would be appreciated. I have inherited a code base that has a custom object-relational mapping (ORM) system. SQL cannot be written in the application but the ORM must still eventually generate the SQL to send to the SQL Server. All identifiers are quoted with double quotation marks. string QuoteName(string identifier) { return "\" + identifier.Replace("\"", "\"\"") + "\""; } If I were building this dynamic SQL in SQL, I would use the built-in SQL Server QUOTENAME function: declare @identifier nvarchar(128); set @identifier = N'Client"; DROP TABLE [dbo].Client; --'; declare @delimitedIdentifier nvarchar(258); set @delimitedIdentifier = QUOTENAME(@identifier, '"'); print @delimitedIdentifier; -- "Client""; DROP TABLE [dbo].Client; --" I have not found any definitive documentation about how to escape quoted identifiers in SQL Server. I have found Delimited Identifiers (Database Engine) and I also saw this stackoverflow question about sanitizing. If it were to have to call the QUOTENAME function just to quote the identifiers that is a lot of traffic to SQL Server that should not be needed. The ORM seems to be pretty well thought out with regards to SQL Injection. It is in C# and predates the nHibernate port and Entity Framework etc. All user input is sent using ADO.NET SqlParameter objects, it is just the identifier names that I am concerned about in this question. This needs to work on SQL Server 2005 and 2008.
