• Data Center Modernization: Harness the power of Oracle Exalogic and Exadata with PeopleSoft

Allegis Group is a $6+ billion company, offering a full range of specialized staffing and recruiting solutions to clients in a wide range of industries.   The company processes about 133,000 paychecks per week, every week of the year. With 300 offices around the world and the hefty task of managing HR and payroll, the PeopleSoft system at Allegis  is a mission-critical application. The firm is in the midst of a data center modernization initiative. Part of that project meant moving the company's PeopleSoft applications (Financials and HR Modules as well as Custom Time & Expense module) to a converged infrastructure.     The company ran a proof of concept with four different converged architectures before deciding upon Exadata and Exalogic as the platform of choice.   Performance combined with High availability for running mission-critical payroll processes drove this decision.  During the testing on Exadata and Exalogic Allegis applied a particular (11-F) tax update in production environment. What job ran for roughly six hours completed in less than 1.5 hours. • Need to re-build an application - how?

  For our main system, we have a small monitor application that sits outside our network and periodically tries to log in to verify the system still works. We have a problem with the monitor though in that the communications component set (Asta 3 inside Delphi applications) doesn't always connect through. Overall, I'd say it's about 95% reliable, but that other 5% kills the monitor since it will try to log in and hang on the connection attempt (no timeout in the component). This really isn't an issue on the client side of the system since the clients don't disconnect and reconnect repeatedly on the same application instance, but I need a way to make sure the monitor stays up and continues working even when the component fails on a run. I have a few ideas as to which way to have the program run, the main idea being to put the communications inside a threaded data module so that if one thread crashes then another thread can test later and the program keep going. Does this sound like a valid way to go? Any other ideas how to ensure a reliable monitoring application with a less than 100% reliable component? Thanks. P.S. • Restore Failure from Ubuntu One

  Had to do a reinstall of Ubuntu 12 after 13.10 failed. Lost all my data, but I remembered that I had data backed up to Ubuntu One. It recognized my previous backups but I got errors and a restore failure when I went to restore the data. This is what I got. Can anyone make heads or tails of this? I still don't have my data. • Old Lock Retrofitted for Wireless and Key-free Entry

  What do you do if the old key your landlord gave you is poor fit for your apartment’s lock? If you’re the geeky sort, you build a wireless unlocking module to do the work for you. Instructables user Rybitski writes: The key to my apartment never worked quite right because it is a copy of a copy of a copy. I am fairly certain that the dead bolt is original to the building and the property manager seems to have lost the original key years ago. As a result unlocking the door was always a pain. Changing the lock wasn’t an option, but eliminating the need to use a key was. To that end, he built the device seen in the video above. • Team Software Development using Ruby on Rails

  I used to work alone on small to medium sized programming projects before and have no experience working in a team environment. Currently, there will be 3 of us in an in-house software development team that is tasked to develop a number of software for an academic institution. We have decided to use the web for the majority of the projects and are planning to choose Ruby on Rails for this and I would like to ask for your inputs, advices and approaches with regards to software development as a team using the RoR web framework. One thing that has really confounded me is how you divide the programming tasks of a project if there are 3 of you that are really doing the coding. It’s obvious that we as developers approach a problem in a modular way and finish it one after another. If the project consists of 3 modules, should each one of us focus on each of those modules? Would it be faster that way? How about if the 3 of us would focus on one module first (that’s what I really prefer). Is using a distributed version control system such as Git the answer to this type of problem? Please don’t forget to put your tips and experiences with regards to team software development. Cheers!

• Running CORN job on Ubuntu server for SugarCRM

  i am pretty inexperienced in Linux.So be descriptive on your answer. My environment :Local Linux server 12.04 hosting Sugar CRM 6.5.2. There is area in sugar CRM called scheduler. I can configured some predefined jobs here. in my case i am trying to run email reminders (ever min/hour/day/month). For this scheduler to be effective, i read some where i need to setup CRON job. So i did some research & finally put following lines in CRONTAB for the root user, as per instructions given in sugarCRM. cd /var/www/crm; php -f cron.php /dev/null 2&1 Well i am creating contracts in my sugarCRM (AOS module) & i want email reminders to be sent for these contracts to the concern person. Now my sugarCRM email is configured correctly & i can send test emails using it. But the CRON + scheduler not giving any result. I can't receive any emails. Then i tried to read /var/log/syslog & it is showing entry for following line each minute. Oct 27 15:03:01 unicomm CRON[28182]: (root) CMD (cd /var/www/crm; php -f cron.php /dev/null 2&1) I've few questions: 1) what does the CRON job line i've added in crontab mean? cd /var/www/crm; php -f cron.php /dev/null 2&1 is not making any sense to me. 2) How am i suppose to get this thing work? I've searched a lot (including SugarCRM forum), but no luck.

• ATI Radeon 5800 series dual monitor unity not 3D accelerated

  When I had a single monitor setup, without Xinerama, with my current setup of Ubuntu 11.10, ATI 5800 series card, Unity showed transparencies, shadows, etc. (although graphics was reported as 'Standard' in the control/settings panel). Having switched to a dual monitor setup, dell 24" UltraSharp and a smaller Acer monitor, Unity shows only as 2d, even though I'm not loggin in to that display manager. WebGL performance is very sluggish, I'm getting the impression that the processor is doing all the work and the card isn't even accessible even though the drivers are installed (from the ubuntu repository, I did not compile custom drivers). Any tips on how to enable full 3D accelerationn and video card support.   I am developing a module in website to save and retreive friend list. I am using Zend Framework and for DB handling I am using Doctrine(ORM). There are two models: 1) users that stores all the users 2) my_friends that stores the friend list (that is refference table with M:M relation of user) the structure of my_friends is following ...id..........user_id............friend_id........approved.... ...10.........20 ..................25...................1.......... ...10.........21 ..................25...................1.......... ...10.........22 ..................30...................1.......... ...10.........25 ..................30...................1.......... The Doctrine query to retreive friend list id follwing $friends = Doctrine_Query::create()->from('my_friends as mf') ->leftJoin('mf.users as friend') ->where("mf.user_id = 25") ->andWhere("mf.approved = 1"); Suppose I am viewing the user no.- 25. With this query I am only getting the user no.- 30. where as user no.- 25 is also approved friend of user no.- 20 and 21. Please guide me, what should be the query to find all friend and is there any need to change the DB structure.

• Internet Timeouts with TP-Link TL-WN821N v2 wireless usb stick

  A short time after accessing the internet, the browser/download times out. Before the timeout, the internet works OK briefly; afterwards, the wireless is still connected with a strong signal, but every internet access results in a timeout. When I leave the PC for a while, the internet is back just to timeout again as soon as I start using it. The same happens when I reconnect to the router. Also, when I surf the internet, it takes a couple of minutes until the timeout, but when I download something, it times out in a matter of seconds. The wireless adapter works just fine in Windows and internet via ethernet cable works just fine in Ubuntu. Does anyone have the same problem or knows a solution. I use Ubuntu 12.10 x64. The problem occurs since I installed ubuntu (which was a few days ago). • How to switch to a generic kernel in a headless Ubuntu Server 12.04?

  I just got a dedicated server with Ubuntu 12.04 installed with a custom compiled kernel. Since I would like to install VirtualBox and this custom kernel doesn't support dynamic module loading (for security) I need to change the kernel. I'm running some Ubuntu servers for years but never palyed with grub and a headless computer. When the command update-grub is run it shows the different kernel it finds. Here is what I see Generating grub.cfg ... Found linux image: /boot/bzImage-3.2.13-xxxx-grs-ipv6-64 Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-34-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-34-generic No volume groups found done The first one is the active one as seen with uname -r. To me it looks like the second kernel is the one I should use. But I don't know how to configure grub2 to use it. The computer is also configured with a software RAID using mdadm I guess. Never used that before. I don't know if playing with the grub of changing kernel could brake this. What must I do to set the generic kernel as the default one so that I can get VirtualBox running.

• crippling repeating "pciehp card not present" notifications

  When using ubuntu (12.04, both installed and on a live usb) I get a lot of these messages: pciehp 0000:00:1c.5:pcie04: Card not present on Slot(37) pciehp 0000:00:1c.5:pcie04: Card present on Slot(37) And with a lot I mean about 20 per second. This has a crippling effect, and I would like to get rid of it :) The computer is a packard bell easynote BG48-U-100 DC. I tip I picked up from some fedora/redhat error here was to look at lspci -vnn. I have pasted the part about "00:1c.5" here: http://pastebin.com/0sfsiqW2 For what good it may do, here is the lsmod of my machine: http://pastebin.com/DQZy1kAL From that first pastebin I think to conclude that it has to do with the module shpchp, which seems to me (aka: google) to have something to do with ACPI. That's as far as I've come in disecting this. Can anyone help me along further? What can I do, check etc? I did see this topic but my intentions are not to surpress the error message: I know how to do this (from that topic ;) ), but I'm looking for a real sollution. Finding the problem on the internet does suspect me to believe it is neither an ubuntu specific nor a packard-bell specific problem.If you google the problem it seems that is present on several other distribution/hardware combo's as well, and it looks like the advice is to remove one of the drivers? I have no clue as to which driver I should look at and and what would be the effect of just removing it. I have seen this topic which is old-ish, but describes my problem and is about a similar computer. The solution in this topic was to compile a new kernel using a spanish guide, which seems a bit extreme to me, so I'm kinda hoping for a better solution than that.

• Abstract Factory Method and Polymorphism

  Being a PHP programmer for the last couple of years, I'm just starting to get into advanced programming styles and using polymorphic patterns. I was watching a video on polymorphism the other day, and the guy giving the lecture said that if at all possible, you should get rid of if statements in your code, and that a switch is almost always a sign that polymorphism is needed. At this point I was quite inspired and immediately went off to try out these new concepts, so I decided to make a small caching module using a factory method. Of course the very first thing I have to do is create a switch to decide what file encoding to choose. • ATI Radeon HD with Catalyst driver stuck mirroring screens

  In 11.10 I replaced my aging Nvidia card with a new Radeon HD 6970 card. The single card has two DVI output ports which I've connected to two monitors. I installed Catalyst version 11.9 and I cannot get multiple monitors set up the way I want. I tried: $ sudo amdcccle and setting the mode to single desktop multiple monitors and whenever I do that Unity crashes and I get back to the login screen. Nothing shows up in the Xorg.*.log files for me to post here. There's only one card so I don't think xinerama would be any help here. Anyone have any ideas? • How to distinguish doc, ppt, xls files, without looking at file extension

  So I was wondering how would you differentiate ppt, xls and doc files from each other in linux regardless of extensions. I tried 'file' but from the looks of it, all of MSOffice files are categorized under the same file type. Similarly I'm having trouble with docx, xlsx and pptx files, since they're essentially all zip files containing a bunch of xml. I also tried a python script importing the magic module, but no go. I'm trying to identify the actual file for a sandbox analysis. And for this specific purpose I need to find the actual file type in order to run it in the sandbox vm (the Windows vm runs everything by extension). Let's say my sample file is labeled as try.exe, but in reality it's just a doc file. My script will rename it as try.exe.doc, which would work fine for doc files. But since linux identifies all MSOffice files as simple DOC files then there's no way to identify ppt or xls files. As a result the sandbox wont' analyze the sample correctly.

• Concurrency pattern of logger in multithreaded application

  The context: We are working on a multi-threaded (Linux-C) application that follows a pipeline model. Each module has a private thread and encapsulated objects which do processing of data; and each stage has a standard form of exchanging data with next unit. The application is free from memory leak and is threadsafe using locks at the point where they exchange data. Total number of threads is about 15- and each thread can have from 1 to 4 objects. Making about 25 - 30 odd objects which all have some critical logging to do. Most discussion I have seen about different levels as in Log4J and it's other translations. The real big questions is about how the overall logging should really happen? One approach is all local logging does fprintf to stderr. The stderr is redirected to some file. This approach is very bad when logs become too big. If all object instantiate their individual loggers - (about 30-40 of them) there will be too many files. And unlike above, one won't have the idea of true order of events. Timestamping is one possibility - but it is still a mess to collate. If there is a single global logger (singleton) pattern - it indirectly blocks so many threads while one is busy putting up logs. This is unacceptable when processing of the threads are heavy. So what should be the ideal way to structure the logging objects? What are some of the best practices in actual large scale applications? I would also love to learn from some of the real designs of large scale applications to get inspirations from!

  If I use database by creating adapter with drivers, initialize it in some abstract class and extend that abstract class to required model. Then use simple query statement. • HP Envy dv6t-7300: Disabled WiFi through button and can't enable it anymore

  Well, I have a HP Envy dv6t-7300 laptop that came with a Ralink RT5390 WiFi card. Everything was working perfectly, and eventually I press the WiFi button in my keyboard to toggle the card on/off. Until today, all worked right: if the wifi was off (wifi LED amber) and I press the wifi button, after a few seconds the LED turn white and everything works. If I repeat the process, the wifi LED turn amber and the card get disabled, but now, I can't turn it on anymore. running sudo rfkill list all I get: 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 1: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes So, I ran sudo rfkill unblock all but nothing changed. As a side note, if I run sudo ifconfig wlan0 up, the indicator LED gets white (indicating that the card was enabled), but Ubuntu still say that the card is blocked by hardware. Extra information: the card works without issues in windows and in Ubuntu installer (booting from a live CD). I'm using the card out-of-box, using the drivers already included in Ubuntu 12.10. The module rt2800pci is loaded and working fine, not blacklisted, etc, etc. The card and the button toggle worked flawlessly until today, when I toggled it off and can't turn it on anymore... The problem is back, but in a different manner: if I don't press the wifi key a few times during the grub loading, in the login screen the wifi button will be ambar (disabled), pressing it will toggle it white (enabled) or ambar (disabled) again, but ubuntu still says that the network card was disabled by hardware and doesn't connect... In other words, if I don't press the WiFi button a few times when Ubuntu is booting, it will be stuck with the "network card was disabled by hardware" message, even if the light is white (enabled). Any clue? Maybe a error in some startup script or config file?

  It just keeps checking in vain. Also cannot import or export data, but get this error I use the latest versions of both in Lubuntu 12.04. In Google Chrome it works. What could it be the problem? • Why would Java app make RPC call to itself?

  I am working with a multithreaded homegrown multi-module app in my new job. We use the the Thrift protocol to communicate RPC calls between different stand-alone applications in a distributed system. One of them listens on multiple ports and I just noticed that it actually makes an RPC call to itself from one thread invoked from one socket it listens to (web service call) to another port within the same app. I verified that it could accomplish the same thing if it just went and directly called the method that the remote procedure ultimately invokes as it is all within the same application, same JVM. To make it even more mysterious, the call is completely synchronous, i.e. no callbacks involved. The first thread totally sits and waits until it makes a call across the wire to itself and comes back. Now, I am perplexed why anybody would do it this way. It seems like calling somebody on the phone that sits in the same room as you do. Can anybody provide an explanation why the developer before me would come up with the above mentioned model? Maybe there is a reason and I am missing something.

• SQL Server Database Settings

  For those using Data Relationship Management on Oracle DB this does not apply, but for those using Microsoft SQL Server it is highly recommended that you run with Snapshot Isolation Mode. The Data Governance module will not function correctly without this mode enabled. All new Data Relationship Management repositories are created with this mode enabled by default. This mode makes SQL Server (2005+) behave more like Oracle DB where readers simply see older versions of rows while a write is in progress, instead of readers being blocked by locks while a write takes place. Many common sources of deadlocks are eliminated. For example, if one user starts a 5 minute transaction updating half the rows in a table, without snapshot isolation everyone else reading the table will be blocked waiting. With snapshot isolation, they will see the rows as they were before the write transaction started. Conversely, if the readers had started first, the writer won't be stuck waiting for them to finish reading... the writes can begin immediately without affecting the current transactions. To make this change, make sure no one is using the target database (eg: put it into single-user mode), then run these commands: ALTER DATABASE [DB] SET ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION ONALTER DATABASE [DB] SET READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT ON Please make sure you coordinate with your DBA team to ensure tempdb is appropriately setup to support snapshot isolation mode, as the extra row versions are stored in tempdb until the transactions are committed. Let me take this opportunity to extremely strongly highly recommend that you use solid state storage for your databases with appropriate iSCSI, FiberChannel, or SAN bandwidth. The performance gains are significant and there is no excuse for not using 100% solid state storage in 2013. Actually unless you need to store petabytes of archival data, there is no excuse for using hard drives in any systems, whether laptops, desktops, application servers, or database servers. The productivity benefits alone are tremendous, not to mention power consumption, heat, etc.
