• Creating an Admin directory in Rails

  I've been developing the CMS backend for a website for a few weeks now. The idea is to craft everything in the backend first so that it can manage the database and information that will be displayed on the main website. As of now, I currently have all my code setup in the normal rails MVC structure. So the users admin is /users and videos is /videos. My plans are to take the code for this and move it to a /admin directory. So the two controllers above would need to be accessed by /admin/users and /admin/videos. I'm not sure how todo the ruote (adding the /admin as a prefix) nor am I sure about how to manage the logic. What I'm thinking of doing is setting up an additional 'middle' controller that somehow gets nested between the ApplicationControler and the targetted controller when the /admin directory is accessed. This way, any additional flags and overloaded methods can be spawned for the /admin section only (I believe I could use a filter too for this). If that were to work, then the next issue would be separating the views logic (but that would just be renaming folders and so on). Either I do it that way or I have two rails instances that share the MVC code between them (and I guess the database too), but I fear that would cause lots of duplication errors. Any ideas as to how I should go about doing this? Many thanks!

• How does the overall view hierarchy change when using UIKit view manipulations?

  I've been trying to figure out what happens in the view hierarchy when methods like pushViewController:animated, presentModalViewController:animated, and tab switches in UITabBarViewController are used, as well as UIAlertView and UIActionSheet. (Side note: I'm doing this because I need to know whether a specific UIView of my creation is visible on screen when I do not know anything about how it or its superview may have been added to the view hierarchy. If someone knows a good way to determine this, I'd welcome the knowledge.) To figure it out, I've been logging out the hierarchy of [[UIApplication sharedApplication] keyWindow] subviews in different circumstances. Is the following correct: When a new viewController is pushed onto the stack of a UINavigationController, the old viewController's view is no longer in the view hierarchy. That is, only the top view controller's view is a subview of UINavigationController's view (according to logs, it's actually several private classes such as UILayoutContainerView). Are the views of view controllers below the top controller of the stack actually removed from the window? A very similar thing happens when a new viewController is presented via presentModalViewController:animated. The new viewController's view is the only subview of the kew window. Is this correct? The easiest thing to understand: a UIAlertView creates its own window and makes it key. The strangest thing I encountered: a UIActionSheet is shown via showInView: method, the actionSheet isn't in the view hierarchy at all. It's not a subview of the view passed as an argument to showInView:, it isn't added as a subview of the key window, and it doesn't create its own window. How does it appear, then? I haven't tried this yet, so I'd like to know what happens in the keyWindow hierarchy when tabs in a UITabBarController are switched. Is the view of the selected UIViewController moved to the top, or does it work like with pushViewController:animated and presentModalViewController:animated, where only the displayed view is in the window hierarchy?

• How to unit test this simple ASP.NET MVC controller

  Lets say I have a simple controller for ASP.NET MVC I want to test. I want to test that a controller action (Foo, in this case) simply returns a link to another action (Bar, in this case). How would you test this? (either the first or second link) My implementation has the same link twice. One passes the url throw ViewData[]. This seems more testable to me, as I can check the ViewData collection returned from Foo(). Even this way though, I don't know how to validate the url itself without making dependencies on routing. • Detect if certain UIView was touched amongst other UIViews

  HI Guys, Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere but I can't seem to get it to work. I have 3 UIViews, layered on top of one large uiview. I want to know if the user touches the top one and not care about the other ones. I will have a couple of buttons in the second UIView and a UITable in the 3rd UIView. Problem is I turn userInteractionEngabled on on the first view and that works, but all the other views respond in the same way even if I turn it off. If I disable userInteractionEnabled on self.view none of them respond. I also can't detect which view was touched in the touchesBegan delegate method. my code: UIView *aView = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 320, 150)]; aView = userInteractionEnabled = YES; [self.view addSubview:aView]; UIView *bView = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 150, 320, 50)]; bView.userInteractionEnabled = NO; [self.view addSubview:bView]; -(void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { //This gets called for a touch anywhere } Thanks for any help.

• Is Software Engineering Dead? [closed]

  Right from Jeff's blog: Software Engineering: Dead? I was utterly floored when I read this new IEEE article by Tom DeMarco (pdf). See if you can tell why. He quotes DeMarco, "I'm gradually coming to the conclusion that software engineering is an idea whose time has come and gone". Further, "What DeMarco seems to be saying -- and, at least, what I am definitely saying -- is that control is ultimately illusory on software development projects." I am writing these lines without context to invoke reading of the related subject. What are the views of the programming community here? I have started to realize that a community wiki is not getting the right amount of participation here. That is the reason I left this question out in the open, while still contemplating a change to CW. It was closed once, and I thought that was the end of it. But, now I see it was reopened and has more answers (all of which I have not yet read). However, I see a lot of CW requests and am forced to reconsider that. This is how I intend to make the CW decision here. There is a comment by Neil Butterworth requesting a CW at 12 upvotes -- "should be community wiki" There is a comment by Lance Roberts requesting no CW at 0 upvotes -- "+1 for not putting it in community wiki" The difference is 12 for a CW request at the moment If this difference becomes 5 more (that is 17), I'll move this question to CW, and it will not return back from there Of course, there is also a close vote at the moment; the question may be closed again.

• Silverlight MVVM binding seems not to work

  Hi everybody! Building my first SL MVVM application (Silverlight4 RC) and have some issues i don't understand. Having a WPF background i don't know what is going on here: ViewModel has several properties, in which one is called SelectedRecord. This is a get only property and is defined like this: public Culture SelectedRecord { get { return culturesView.View.CurrentItem as Culture; } } As you can see it is gets the current value of a CollectionViewSource (called culturesView). So if i select a Culture, the SelectedRecord (gets a value directly from within the CollectionViewSource) as expected. (Actually there is a datagrid control bound to the CollectionViewSource, hence it is possible to change the selected item) OK. Now to the View . There are several views which access this ViewModel and in particular there is one which shows the values of the aforementioned property SelectedRecord (let's call it the EditView). To show this EditView there is a button (which has its Command property bound to an ICommand in the ViewModel) which functions (the first time) as expected. This means: 1st try : i select a record, switch to EditView, outcome: selected record values are shown (as expected!!). 2nd try: switch back to datagrid, select another record, switch to EditView, outcome: the values of the previous shown record are shown again!!! WHY?? First i thought that the SelectedRecord has not the correct value set, but i was mistaken: it HAS the correct value! So it should be shown!? What am i missing? In WPF this would work!! • Business entity: private instance VS single instance

  Suppose my WinForms application has a business entity Order, the entity is used in multiple views, each view handles a different domain or use-case in the application. As an example, one managing orders, the other one digging into one order and displaying additional data. If I'd use nHibernate (or any other ORM) and use one session/dataContext per view (or per db action), I'd end up getting two different instances for the same Order (let's say orderId = 1). Although functionally the same entity, they are technically two different instances. Yes, I could implement Equals/GetHashcode to make them "seem" the same. Why would you go for a single instance per entity vs private instances per view or per use-case? Having single instances has the advantage of sharing INotifyPropertyChanged events, and sharing additional (non-persistent) data. Having a private instance in each view would give you the flexibility of the undo functionality on a view level. In the example above, I'd allow the user to change order details, and give them the flexibility to not save the change. Here, synchronisation between the view/use-case happens on a data persistence level. What would your argument be?

• Find & Replace - using a Regex for this?

  Hey folks. Regexs make me cry, so, I came here for help. I'm looking for some tips on Find & Replace in Panic's Coda. I know the F&R is pretty advance but I'm just looking for the best way to do this. I'm trying to rewrite a 'template engine' (very basic) I have going on with a webapp I'm coding in PHP (CodeIgniter). Currently I'm calling my template like so: $this->load->view('subviews/template/headerview'); $this->load->view('subviews/template/menuview'); $this->load->view('subviews/template/sidebar'); $this->load->view('The-View-I-Want-To-Load'); // This is the important line $this->load->view('subviews/template/footerview'); However it's inefficient using five lines of code every time I want to load up a different page, in every different controller. So I rewrote it like this: $data['view'] = 'The-View-I-Want-To-Load'; $this->load->view('template',$data); That way if I need to make any major changes to the design it can easily be done from the template.php view file (which contains the header, menu, sidebar views etc. etc.). However I use the previous 5-lines all over the place in many different controllers and functions. So, my question is --- How can I find and replace the old template engine (5 lines of code) for the new one - substituting in the name of the view in the important, unique line for the one in $data['view]? Does that make any sense?! If not I'll try and rephrase! I mean, is there a way of doing this via a Regex or something? Or am I on completely the wrong lines here? Thanks for your help Jack

• What should be the "trunk" development, or release

  I have the unfortunate opportunity of source control via Borland's StarTeam. It unfortunately does very few things well, and one supreme weakness is its view management. I love SVN and come from an SVN mindset. Our issue is post production release we are spending countless hours merging changes into a "production support" environment. Please do not harass me this was not my doing, I inherited it and am trying to present a better way of managing the repository. It is not an option to switch to a different SCM tool. Current setup Product.1.0 (TRUNK, current production code, and at this level are pending bug fixes) Product.2.0(true trunk anything checked in gets tested, and then released next production cycle, a lot of changes occur in this view) My proposal is going to be to swap them, have all development be done on the trunk (Production), tag on releases, and as needed create child views to represent production support bug fixes. Production Production.2.0.SP.1 I can not find any documentation to support the above proposal so I am trying to get feedback on whether or not the change is a good idea and if there is anything you would recommend doing differently.

• How to get NEW width/height of root layout in onConfigurationChanged?

  One of our views has a ScrollView as its root layout. When the device is rotated and onConfigurationChanged() is called, we'd like to be able to get the ScrollView's new width/height. However, we're seeing the opposite. • Algorithm To Select Most Popular Places from Database

  We have a website that contains a database of places. For each place our users are able to take one of the follow actions which we record: VIEW - View it's profile RATING - Rate it on a scale of 1-5 stars REVIEW - Review it COMPLETED - Mark that they've been there WISH LIST - Mark that they want to go there FAVORITE - Mark that it's one of their favorites In our database table of places each place contains a count of the number of times each action above was taken as well as the average rating given by users. views ratings avg_rating completed wishlist favorite What we want to be able to do is generate lists of the top places using the above information. Ideally, we would want to be able to generate this list using a relatively simple SQL query without needing to do any legwork to calculate additional fields or stack rank places against one another. That being said, since we only have about 50,000 places we could run a nightly cron job to calculate some fields such as rankings on different categories if it would make a meaningful difference in the overall results of our top places. I'd appreciate if you could make some suggestions on how we should think about bubbling the best places to the top, which criteria we should weight more heavily, and given that information - suggest what the MySQL query would need to look like in order to select the top 10 places. One thing to note is that at this time we are less concerned with the recency of a place being popular - meaning that looking at the aggregate information is fine and that more recent data doesn't need to be weighted more heavily. • Why are my CATransitions acting up?

  I am using the following code to switch between views with CATransition. CATransition *applicationLoadViewIn = [CATransition animation]; [applicationLoadViewIn setDuration:20]; [applicationLoadViewIn setType:kCATransitionPush]; [applicationLoadViewIn setSubtype:kCATransitionFromTop]; [applicationLoadViewIn setTimingFunction:[CAMediaTimingFunction functionWithName:kCAMediaTimingFunctionEaseIn]]; ViewToSwitchTo *myviewcontroller = [[ViewToSwitchTo alloc] init]; [self.view.layer addAnimation:applicationLoadViewIn forKey:kCATransitionPush]; [self.view addSubview:myviewcontroller.view]; It functions mostly how I want it to. It pushes from the top like it should, however it for some reason acts strangely. First, the view I am switching to starts coming in from the bottom like it should, but for some reason, the view that I am switching FROM appears over the top of it with low opacity, so you see both of them. However, you also see the view that is coming in, shifted maybe 100 pixels upwards, on top of itself and the other view, once again with low opacity. Just before the halfway point of the the transition, everything works fine, you only see the view that is coming in and the view going out, doing what they should be doing. But slightly after the halfway point, the view I am switching to appears in its final destination, under the view I am switching from, and the view I am switching from has been reduced in opacity. What is going on here?

• Steps to Investigate Cause of Web.Config Duplicate Section

  Symptoms In IIS Dot Net 2.0 Integrated app pool: double clicking to view any web.config section results in a the following error dialog. "There was an error while performing this operation.... Fielname... web.config... Error: There is a duplicate..." Browsing to the URL displays: "Http 500.19" internal server error.. There is a duplicate... 'system.web.extensions/scripting/scriptResourceHandler' section defined...." Running the app from VS 2008 an "Unable to start debugging on the web server..." dialog is displayed. Things Tried Looked at other application directories on same IIS server. No problem view web.config contents or serving up the app. Removed and re-added the application in IIS. Checked out a new version of the source code. Reverted to prior versions of the web.config file. Looked for web.config files that might have duplicate sections in: Inetpub root. "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\machine.config" The "Views" subfolder of the ASP.Net MVC app. Checked out source code to another dev machine. Setup IIS 7 app folder. No problem with Web.config. Question If the reason for this error is another web.config file where else should I look? Are there other reasons for these symptoms?

We've been scratching our heads with with this interesting scenario at the office, and we're anxious to hear your ideas and approaches: We have a database, whose schema is prone to changes -lets call it Prony-. (is used to store configuration parameters for embedded devices. so if the embedded devices guy need a new table, property or relationship for the model, he should be able to adapt the schema in a easy way -happens so often- ). Prony needs a web interface to create/edit its data. We have another database containing data that also need to be loaded to the devices, after making some transformations - lets call this one Oddy- (this data it's generated by an already existent administrative web application). Finally we have Tracy, a server that communicates our DBs and our embedded devices. She should to auto-adapt herself, to our dbs schema changes and serialize the data to the devices. Nice puzzle, don't think so? : ) Our current candidates: Rady: The fast Lets create some views in Prony that make the data transformation from Oddy. then use DynamicData (or some RAD tool) to create/update a simple web interface for Prony (so he can even consult the transformated data from coming from Prony : ). About Tracy, she will need to be recompiled to update her DB schema (Entity framework should work) and use Reflection to explore recursively the schema and serialize data. Cons: We would have to recompile Tracy and the Prony's web interface. What do you think of the candidate(s)? What would you do?

  I am implementing a simple RoR webpage that collect emails from visitors and store them as objects. I'm using it as a mini-project to try RoR and BDD. I can think of 3 features for Cucumber: 1. User submits a valid email address 2. User submits an existing email address 3. User submits an invalid email My question is, for scenarios 2 and 3, is it better to handle this via the controller? or as methods in a class? Perhaps something that throws errors if an instance is instantiated in sceanrio 2 or 3? Implementation is below, love to hear some code reviews in addition to answers to questions above. Thanks! • How can I set the size of the gap between inline elements in CSS?

  I am creating an MVC 1.0 form to use in multiple views. I have some elements that need to be shown on the same line, and I have done this by setting the display to "display: inline" for the style. I have also added the margin-left setting to the CSS in order to force the gap between the inline elements but this doesn't appear to be being set.   I am a relative newbie when it comes to SQL Azure!! I was wondering if there was a definitive list somewhere regarding what is and is not supported by SQL Azure in regards to SQL Server 2008?   In my application I needed something like a particle system so I did the following: While the application initializes I load a UIImage laserImage = [UIImage imageNamed:@"laser.png"]; UIImage *laserImage is declared in the Interface of my Controller. So in my main drawing loop I set all the UIImageView's positions to the calculated positions in my model.lasers array: for (int i = 0; i < [model.lasers count]; i++) { [[self.view viewWithTag:i+10] setCenter:[[model.lasers objectAtIndex:i] pos]]; } I incremented the tags by 10 because the default is 0 and I don't want to move all the views with the default tag. So the animation looks fine with about 10 - 20 images but really gets slow when working with about 60 images. So my question is: Is there any way to optimize this without starting over in OpenGl ES? • Cache of Objects or OutPut in View ? Wich is better ?

  Hi everybody, I have an ecommerce working in ASP.Net MVC. i'm using Caching to improve more performace in my pages and it's working fine. I'd link to know what is more performative, for example, I can set OutPutCache in my views and and use this cache for all page OR I could get my List of Products in controller, put it on cache (like the code below) and send it to View to render for the user??? private IEnumerable<Products> GetProductsCache(string key, ProductType type) { if (HttpContext.Cache[key] == null) HttpContext.Cache.Insert(key, ProductRepository.GetProducts(type), null, DateTime.Now.AddMinutes(10), Cache.NoSlidingExpiration); return (IEnumerable<Products>)HttpContext.Cache[key]; } public ActionResult Index() { var home = new HomeViewModel() { Products = GetProductsCache("ProductHomeCache", ProductType.Product) Services = GetProductsCache("ServiceHomeCache", ProductType.Service) }; return View(home); } Both works fine, but I'd like to know what is suggested to improve more performace ? • WPF Trigger / Style overrides another

  I have a listview defined as such <ListView Width="auto" SelectionMode="Single" ItemContainerStyle="{StaticResource baseListViewStyle}" .... Then in "baseListViewStyle" I have defined some base styles to apply to my list views, including a Style trigger: <Style x:Key="baseListViewStyle" TargetType="ListViewItem"> <Setter Property="Height" Value="20" /> <Setter Property="HorizontalContentAlignment" Value="Stretch"/> <Style.Triggers> <Trigger Property="IsMouseOver" Value="True"> <Setter Property="Foreground" Value="Red" /> </Trigger> </Style.Triggers> </Style> The trigger here highlights the row when mouse is over it. Nice. I also have a Data Trigger on the listviewitem: <Style.Triggers> <DataTrigger Binding="{Binding IsTestTrue}" Value="True"> <DataTrigger.EnterActions> <BeginStoryboard Storyboard="{StaticResource SomeFunkyAnimation}" /> </DataTrigger.EnterActions> </DataTrigger> If test is true then a nice little fade animation is played out. This all works except when I move my mouse over the row where "test is true" the animation stops and the mouse over style is displayed. Any ideas how I can override that style in my DataTrigger? TIA

• Android ScrollView jumps around when resized

  I have a ScrollView that contains an number of other views (TextViews, ImageViews, etc.). The ScrollView is taller than the screen. I have an AsyncTask that updates the children of the ScrollView based on an http response. I've discovered an interesting behavior that I can't figure out how to work around. If I set any of the children's visibilities to View.INVISIBLE as part of the AsyncTask.onPostExecute(), everything works fine. However, if I set any of the children's visibilities to View.GONE, the ScrollView jumps down from the top when onPostExecute() is called. Exactly how far seems to vary. I'm guessing that re-laying out the ScrollView is causing it to scroll away from the top for some reason. So the question is: is there a way to either prevent or work around this behavior? PS. Using ScrollView.jump(FOCUS_UP) as a workaround isn't ideal since that'll force the user to the top even if they had intended to scroll down. EDIT: Actually, I was wrong. The problem wasn't with a child view being marked gone, the problem was with a sibling view being marked gone and the ScrollView getting resized. My ScrollView is inside a LinearLayout that also contains a Button. When the button is set to GONE, the ScrollView gets resized to take up the available space, causing it to scroll away from the top. Different cause, still looking for a workaround though if possible.

• Table cell in a split-view controller - selected cell becomes deselected when called by reloadData

  I'm working on a universal app that uses a SplitViewController to present a master-detail view. In the iPad HIG on Split Views, Apple states: In general, indicate the current selection in the left pane in a persistent way. This behavior helps people understand the relationship between the item in the left pane and the contents of the right pane. This is important because the contents of the right pane can change, but they should always remain related to the item selected in the left pane. So I'm trying to maintain selection state on the left. Easy enough when the user taps, I just remove the deselectRowAtIndexPath:animated: message from tableView:didSelectRowAtIndexPath: implementation. But, I also want the selection state to show up by default (without a user tap). I wound up putting this in my tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: implementation: if (UI_USER_INTERFACE_IDIOM() == UIUserInterfaceIdiomPad) { if (cellShouldBeSelected) cell.selected = YES; else cell.selected = NO; } The behavior I'm seeing, is that when the cells finall appear, for a fraction of a section the cell is indeed selected, but then the selection disappears without any user interaction. Any ideas? I set the new clearsSelectionOnViewWillAppear property to NO, but that doesn't seem to fix it, and it shouldn't really matter because I'm marking the cell as selected long after viewWillAppear is called - I'm actually doing it after some network activity and then sending the table view a reloadData message.
