• VWD Express won't let me add one table!

  Sorry if this question is too trivial but I really haven't found any related questions and I am shaking too much to think logically. I spent like few hours waiting for SQL Server to finally install (you know, it's Microsoft) and now when I want to add new table to database it says "this feature is not supported by Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express". How could this happen? I mean, what's the point of even letting me use this if I can't even add one table to database, and I won't even know about it until I actually need to do it? Are they really serious or is it just some mistake? Is there any way to get around this problem? I need to create just one simple project with one small table in database but it won't let me, but I can't believe they could actually have nerves to make express edition without such a trivial function, so maybe I just made something wrong and there's actually some way to add this table? Sorry for being so whiny but I'm just fed up with this environment.

• Passing Reference types by value in C#

  I want to pass a reference type by value to a method in C#. Is there a way to do it. In C++, I could always rely on the copy constructor to come into play if I wanted to pass by Value. Is there any way in C# except: 1. Explicitly creating a new object 2. Implementing IClonable and then calling Clone method. Here's a small example: Let's take a class A in C++ which implements a copy constructor. A method func1(Class a), I can call it by saying func1(objA) (Automatically creates a copy) Does anything similar exist in C#. By the way, I'm using Visual Studio 2005.

• Getting started with microcontroller programming

  I'm a fairly good programmer, knowledgeable in C, C++, Python, Ruby and PHP. I'd like to get started with microcontroller programming. I do know nothing about this topic. Microcontrollers are minimal computers on little circuit boards, right? I'm pretty new to electronics too, do I need to be an expert in it to do stuff with microcontrollers? What can I do with them? Would e.g.: A Pacman or Tetris game on an LCD be possible and not too hard? Where should I start? Basically I want to program something really small I can then take with me. This is my only real goal. Are microcontrollers the right thing for this, or are there better solutions? I'd like to do this for fun and as a hobby, I don't want to become a professional in it.

• Posting data to a HttpHandler greater then ~29MB gives a 404 error

  I am testing a HttpHandler that accepts XML. It works fine when a small amount of data is posted but if I post data larger then approx 29mb, I get a asp.net 404 Error. I am posting to the handler from another handler in the same project and I have tried 2 methods - 1. HttpWebRequest with "POST" 2. WebClient with UploadFile() and UploadData() I get the same 404 error when the posted data is above 29mb. I also tried putting a breakpoint right in the beginning of the receiving handler and debugging. It is never hit. Appears like the handler was never called. Works ok for smaller sized data. What am I doing Wrong? (Thanks in advance for helping)

  There is a folder that contains 1000 of small text files. I aim to parse and process all of them while more files are being populated in to the folder. My intention is to multithread this operation as the single threaded prototype took 6 minutes to process 1000 files. I like to have reader and writer thread(s) as following : while the reader thread(s) are reading the files, I d like to have writer thread(s) to process them. Once the reader is started reading a file, I d like to mark it as being processed, such as by renaming it, once it s read, rename it to completed. How to approach such multithreaded application ? Is it better to use a distributed hash table or a queue? Which data structure to use that would avoid locks? Would you have a better approach to this scheme that you like to share?

• .net - how to connect windows service with systray application

  I have a windows service that do something periodically. on user account runs systray application (written in C#) that communicate with windows service (thru .net remoting) and shows a status and some option to users. Everything works well beside that systray app uses 20-30MB of RAM ! it have to work in terminal environment, when 50 users login, only systray apps take 1GB of RAM ! and i don't have to add, that's wrong :) Is it possible to write .net systray application that will be small ? (1-2MB max?) or should I write it in c/c++? then, what kind of communication should I use between windows service (written in C#) and systray app ?

The architecture is currently like this: Web Application -- calls a class that does the upload For example, in default.aspx, I call : FileHelper fh = new FileHelper() fh.MoveFiles(file) I have an Ajax control that fires when the above is called. This is a control that resides on the website class/project. How do I update the progress counter from the Filehelper class? • Loopj Android Async Http - onFailure not fired

  I am using the great async http library from loopj, but I have run into a small snag. If the user has no internet connection or loses their connection, the app just won't return anything. This part is expected, but it also doesn't fire the onFailure method. Also, the code I have used when there is an internet connection does work so there is no problem on the server end. Here is some code that is stripped down to the minimum. • Linq issue retrieving single value from mssql

  Hey Guys, having an issue with linq, I am basically doing the following but it is saying it is "UserProfile does not contain definition for Username" in the current context where I wrote "u.Username" but it does exist I have added UserProfile table to MyDbml.dbml and if I connect to another table it works fine. • Alternatives to MS project server

  I manage a small group and I'd keep my work breakdown in project. However, it's difficult to provide my team with an adequate view into the project and ability to report on their progress. I looked at MS Project Server (the sharepoint webpart) but it's an expensive proposition. Has anyone had any experience with any other tool (commercial is fine) that helps team view and report on their work as managed by MS Project? FWIW, I have looked at OpenProj and it appears to be a decent solution for viewing project files on the desktop. Anything web-based, keeping in mind that I'd like people to report on their work not just view their work.

  I have a small Bidding system that I'm using for a fantasy auction draft. I'm trying to use the below query to pull up the max bids on each player. However, it's not actually giving me the max bid, it's just giving me the first one entered in to the database.   Hi, I'm trying to extract a number from a string. And do something like this [0-9]+ on this string "aaaa12xxxx" and get "12".   I've been implementing MS Search Server 2010 and so far its really good. Im doing the search queries via their web service, but due to the inconsistent results, im thinking about caching the result instead. The site is a small intranet (500 employees), so it shouldnt be any problems, but im curious what approach you would take if it was a bigger site. I've googled abit, but havent really come over anything specific. So, a few questions: What other approaches are there? And why are they better? How much does it cost to store a dataview of 400-500 rows? What sizes are feasible? Other points you should take into consideration. Any input is welcome :)

• How to restrict html body width when not displayed on iPhone?

  I have set up a web page to look good on the small screen of an iPhone, but when viewed on the desktop, and going right across the width of the browser, it looks terrible. Is there a way I can restrict the width to say, 480px when viewed on a big screen? I tried body { margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; max-width:480px; } but it seems to just set the width at 480px, even on an iPhone on portrait mode.

  I found an updated version of John Gruber's regex for url matching in this post by user GianPac, which states it's been adapted to recognize url without protocol or the www part: (?i)\b((?:[a-z][\w-]+:(?:/{1,3}|[a-z0-9%])|www\d{0,3}[.]|[a-z0-9.-]+[.][a-z]{2,4}/?)(?:[^\s()<]+|(([^\s()<]+|(([^\s()<]+)))))(?:(([^\s()<]+|(([^\s()<]+))))|[^\s`!()[]{};:'\".,<?«»“”‘’])) Whilst this works in most cases, I found it does not match "google.com". It does match "google.comm" and "google.co.uk", so this must be a small oversight. The trouble is, I literally hate regex. It's the bane of my life. I just want to try and tweak this one more time to allow for "google.com" - can anyone throw me a pointer? I (think) it's something to do with this part of the code: +[.][a-z]{2,4}/?) ?

• Flex: Rendering a bound TileList - when does it finish rendering?

  Hi, I have an mx:TileList which is bound to an ArrayCollection. I have some code that displays a "Loading..." message before modifying the ArracyCollection and some code after that hides the loading message. For small data sets, it works fine. However, I noticed with an array size of about 50~ and larger, flex will hide my loading message before the TileList is finished rendering the new data and I'm left with a blank screen for an odd second. Is there an event I can listen to that is called after the TileList is finished re-rendering? Code looks something like this: loading_message.visible = true; for each (var x:Object in new_data) { tile_list_data.append(x); // bound to my_tile_list component } my_tile_list.validateNow(); loading_message.visible = false; In this example, loading_message appear, disappear, and then the flex app will lag before finally revealing the updated TileList. Any ideas? Thanks!

Basically, the requirements are: No unnecessary runtime overhead: whatever can be done at compile time, should be done at compile time. Ability to transparently switch code between fixed and floating point, with no inherent overhead. Fixed point math functions. There's no much point using fixed point if you need to cast back and forth in order to take a square root. Small footprint. Any suggestions?

  I'm starting to do a small amount of development within my company. I'm intending to use Git for version control, and I'm interested to see what guidelines or standards people are using around version in their groups, similar to coding standards are often written within the group for the group. I'm assuming there will be things like; Commit often (at least every day/week/meeting etc) Release builds are always made from the master branch Prior to release, a new branch will be created for Testing and tagged as such. only bug fixes from this point onwards. • Google Translation API not working for even one page long documents

  I'm using Google Translation API to translate text from Chinese Simplified to English in my C# program. The problem is if the text is small (around one line) the API is able to translate it, but if the text is larger (more than 3 lines) is gives an exception saying "The remote server returned an unexpected response: (414) Request-URI Too Large.". However if I use translate.google.com in my browser that works fine. Please tell me how can I process large documents using Google Translate API in my desktop application written in C#.

• Twitter feed appears to be both RSS 2.0 and Atom?

  I'm parsing various site feeds, and putting together a small library to help me do it. Looking at the Atom RFC and RSS 2.0 specification, feeds from Twitter seem to be a combination. Twitter specifies an Atom namespace in an RSS 2.0 structure? GitHub uses Atom, whereas Flickr (offers multiple but the default 'Latest' feed from user profiles) appears to be RSS 2.0. How can Twitter specify a Atom namespace and then use RSS? This makes parsing feeds a little ambiguous, unless I ignore any specified namespace and just examine the document structure.

I don't want the user thinking about viewing finite pieces of data; it should appear that all of the data is available. Rather than downloading all the data at once, small chunks are downloaded as the user comes to them (by scrolling, keying in row numbers, searching).   Hi, I'm going to try and make as much sense as possible here. We are working on a myfaces 2 app in tomcat. On our local dev machines, whenever we want to change one of our xhtml files, we have to stop the server, deploy and then start the server back up. This is cumbersome and makes making small changes to the view tedious. I tried changing the deployed xhtml file in tomcat, but the server only picks up the new change after a restart. Is there any type of config in myfaces or tomcat I can do to force the rebuilding of these source xhtml's every time?

• Why '.png' files produced by ImageMagick are so much bigger than '.jpg' & '.gif' files?

  Hello. I'm using ImageMagick to convert some files from one format to another. I was always under the impression that .png files were supposed to be as big/small as .jpg if not smaller, and definitely smaller than .gif. However when I run convert photo.jpg photo.png The files I'm getting out is about 6 times bigger than the original jpg. Original jpg is a regular photo about 300x500 px, 52 kb. Output is a proper png of the same dimensions, but size is about 307 kb? Does anyoone know what the hack is going on? Am I doing something wrong? P.S.: I tried both on Debian and Windows with the same results.
